Mike's famous, it's not like he's forgotten. The Beatles have sold more records than anyone else though. The difference is that The Beatles are still mostly famous for their music, Mike is partly famous for all of the negative media coverage. The Beatles as a group have few scandals, mainly forgotten things (today) like Lennon's old Jesus comment. The Beatles also still get a lot of writeup in music mags like Rolling Stone & Spin. Things like for best band or best album. Over the decades there's probably been a thousand different books about The Beatles too, group & individual ones and also about other people around them. There's even books about Brian Espstein's secretary, George Harrison's sister, & the fans who hung outside of Abbey Road who were called "Apple Scruffs".Michael has a long way to go then before he reaches that level of fame
A lot of artists in many genres have covered Beatles songs. So that is another way their music stays alive, in a way that even people who don't really know the original versions have heard them. Yesterday is one of the most remade songs in recorded history. Mike/The Jacksons have had relatively few covers of their songs. Probably the Jackson 5 has more remakes (the songs original to them) of their material. When people remake most songs, they just perform them as a song. But in the Alien Ant Farm version of Smooth Criminal, the video is full of Mike imagery, and the song copies Mike's vocal trademarks. Letting the audience know that it a Michael Jackson song.
Someone like Prince didn't have as much presence with today's audience until he passed. When he was alive, he kept his music off of the internet. Don Henley still does something similar to this today, giving copyright hits to people making reaction videos to his solo or Eagles music. Henley doesn't remove the official uploads though like Prince did. Prince finally made a deal with Jay-Z to put his records on Tidal. Other than that, he'd threatened to sue people (through Web Sheriff or his lawyers) who uploaded his music on Youtube/Facebook, and even had things uploaded by Warner Brothers removed. The only videos Prince allowed on Youtube was Cream which was uploaded by the director of it and a few of his then newer songs he put up himself. Mostly 3rdeyegirl stuff. Prince couldn't do anything about the George Harrison tribute video though. He had fansites remove his pictures and even recorded a song about fans complaining about this called PFUnk, specifically about the long gone site Princefams. Prince also wouldn't let his old protege groups use their names The Time (Original 7ven) & The Family (FDeluxe) when they released new albums.
