MJ Estate Re: Broadway Musical April 24th 2019

STATEMENT FROM THE ESTATE

Last week, John Branca, along with Estate attorneys, were invited to speak at Harvard University. They used the opportunity to raise issues about how Leaving Neverland violates every notion of fairness, while pointing out the gaping lies and holes in its narrative. They also spoke with members of the media, such as Billboard, who were present at some of the events [https://www.billboard.com/articles/news/8507510/michael-jackson-estate-hits-back-leaving-neverland]. And you can expect more news from the Estate in the coming weeks.

We also remain focused on long-term projects that we believe will enhance Michael’s legacy moving forward, including the Broadway musical. We can assure you that all those involved in this production, including the Tony Award-winning director, Christopher Wheeldon, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, Lynn Nottage, are devoted MJ fans. That’s why they are committed to bringing this show to Broadway.

If we get this right – which we will – theater audiences will have an even deeper appreciation for Michael’s creative genius, just as they did when they watched This Is It nearly 10 years ago. In fact, we believe this will be as poignant an experience, one that connects the audience to Michael in a way in which he is appreciated both as a person and as an artist. The role for Lynn and Chris, among other things, is of course to entertain, but also to depict the events of Michael’s life and his struggles, both internal and external, that molded him into the person, the artist and the creative genius that this musical celebrates. Simply put, if we didn’t trust Lynn and Chris to do justice to Michael, we would not be working with them.

While we appreciate that, on an emotional level, fans want Lynn and Chris to join the public battle against Leaving Neverland, from an intellectual perspective we believe it is important to understand why Lynn and Chris, to protect the integrity of the musical, should not take a public position at this time one way or another about any issues in Michael’s life. They are biographers who at this stage have been assigned to dispassionately observe their subject’s life and craft their story. Their role is to entertain as well to understand how all of the events and unique personal challenges Michael faced throughout his life shaped him, and molded the character they ultimately present on stage. The story is still a work-in-progress, as they have stated.

As with the two Cirque du Soleil shows and with Spike Lee’s acclaimed documentaries, we are collaborators. We have significant input and say in the final show. But we believe it is important to give all of our creators the freedom to draw upon Michael’s experiences, in this case, to create a well-rounded and in-depth stage character of Michael Jackson. To that end, we have spent a significant amount of time with them sharing our personal knowledge of Michael and our experiences with him as well as introducing them to others who were an integral part of Michael’s life, so they can fully understand the very complicated and talented artist and man that he was.

Michael was constantly judged throughout his life – as he continues to be in death --- by those who never bothered to look below the surface. Lynn and Chris will not do that. They are looking at Michael’s life with the goal of helping audiences understand the challenges and pain he faced away from the spotlight and how it shaped a man who shunned society’s norms to such an extent that 10 years after his passing he still commands the world’s attention. We have asked Lynn and Chris not to give us a superficial Michael, but to delve into his humanity, his goodness and his faults along with the conflicts and difficulties he encountered at different stages of his life, so people can understand what fed the fire of this incredibly unique creative genius. With the benefit of having read drafts of the book, being in the room for readings and being present at labs at which we see the musical coming to life, we see and feel Michael’s presence in a way that we do not think would have been possible with anyone less talented than Lynn and Chris.

A musical of the caliber that we are confident is now taking shape will not only pay tribute to and celebrate Michael Jackson’s genius but take audiences on an emotional journey that will surprise fans and non-fans alike as they witness his magical, complex world. Since we all know it is not possible to judge something that you have not experienced yourself, we hope you will all have the opportunity to sit in the theater and experience this musical for yourselves and we look forward to your reactions once you have that opportunity.

Re: A new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway!

Hmmm...apparently an in-depth interview in the NY Times does not count as 'taking a public position at this time'.

I've been thinking about this musical and its wider possibilities and longer life. Whatever its success or otherwise on Broadway, there is still (in the UK at least) a lot of local support for locally-produced musicals, with amateur casts. This type of musical would be great for introducing new and younger audiences to MJ's life and music, and it is imperative therefore that there is no 'taint' to this musical - the book, the songs, or anything related to it. Local musical theatre groups are largely family-led and supported, and no community will stage or support a musical that is less than 100% squeaky-clean in all respects. Historically there would be a lot of Gilbert and Sullivan (eg Pirates of Penzance), but now more modern- but family- friendly musicals are more popular, like Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Annie, Mary Poppins and the like. (I think US high schools also perform a lot of musicals, and probably the more 'up-to-date' and 'racier' ones, like 'Grease' etc.

It would be a great pity if this musical fails to break into the local musical theatre / US high school programmes because of the statements recently made by Nottage and Wheeldon. The public don't forget these things, and you can't 'tell' people that 'they never said it' when they clearly did. (Gaslighting??)

I know many fans were against 'TII' before it was released - there was a big 'This is Not It' campaign. In the end, the Estate had a huge success with TII, and I suspect that many fans are glad that it was made, so that we have some last memories of Michael, albeit with controversies about eg 'impersonators' making up some of the footage, Michael's obvious poor health etc.

In less than 10 years, we seem to have travelled from 'This is Not It' to 'This is Nottage'. I can only hope that the Estate is right and that this musical will be a success. I fear that the NYT interview will be inescapable, and that the production is already holed below the waterline. Time will tell.....but I am not optimistic on this one.

Total cop out. Not buying a word of it.

Shameful.

Re: A new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway!

I think we should keep an open mind. The Estate won't give approval to something that would further damage Michael's reputation and they've done brilliantly well with the other shows.

Re: A new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway!

For me I'm a little tired of the "festival"! :( It's possible to have a box full of new songs, alternative songs, demos, instrumental, lives, BlueRay?! Thanks you

Article reposted here with thanks to MJ Poetry Fan.

I think this article shows that:
-The press are already sharpening their pens to write reviews of this musical
-They will use their reviews to rake over LN as much as possible, even though by the time the musical reaches the stage, LN will be approx 18 months behind us in the rear-view mirror.
-The development of this musical is inextricably linked with LN in the minds of the press (and will probably remain so in the minds of many fans)
-The press are trying to make the musical into a no-win situation - it is patently ridiculous to say that all future Estate projects would fail if the musical is withdrawn.

Debating the new Michael Jackson musical: Why are respected artists participating?
Chris JonesContact Reporter
Chicago Tribune

Incredibly, the dangerously titled Michael Jackson musical, “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” is moving forward in New York. Its creators are using what I’ll call the complexity defense. It’s fascinating and has implications far beyond Jackson and his legacy.

First, let’s review. The Tribune first reported Jan. 23 that the Broadway-bound musical, a jukebox biography focused around Jackson’s “Dangerous” world tour, would try out in Chicago this fall. That engagement subsequently was cancelled, seemingly in the immediately wake of the HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland,” wherein two adult males, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, claimed, in withering detail, that the so-called King of Pop had abused them at his Neverland ranch when both were underage boys. However, the producers of the show, which include the Jackson estate, claimed that the cancellation was a result of a workshop session being delayed by a now-resolved dispute involving Actors Equity. Whatever the truth, the timing was certainly striking.

This week, though, news came that the show was, as promised, continuing to wend toward Broadway in 2020, albeit without an out-of-town engagement.

You can see why the Jackson Estate, which has attacked the allegations in the documentary as baseless, financially motivated slander, wants the project to continue. Many recent cases involving revelations or allegations of past abusive or inappropriate behavior have resulted in fevered debate over how to handle the disgraced individual’s previous works of art. Is it still OK to watch early Miramax films in the wake of Harvey Weinstein? What about the films of Kevin Spacey? Those are merely the two most obvious examples of countless actors, directors, writers and painters under new scrutiny.

But those are works in the past. In this case, the Jackson musical is yet unfinished. It is in the future. It is one thing to argue that the brilliant artistry of, say, Jackson’s album “Off the Wall” is not invalidated by the artist’s personal behavior, but another to actually create a whole new work around his brand. Estates, though, are trusted with both curating and maximizing creative projects building on the work of deceased artists, further defining their legacy. If “Don’t Stop” were to be cancelled, it would put a chill on any and all future Jackson projects. So wherever you stand on this issue, their persistence is logical.

And it explains why, say, Louis C.K. keeps wanting to do stand-up. There are two debates there, too. There is one set of arguments surrounding the dispensation of Louis C.K. in the past, and another surrounding what he should or should not do be allowed to do in the future. And for those who argue for so-called “cancellation,” it is the future work that is the more egregious.

Look at the recent scandals surrounding racially insensitive statues or murals in schools, depicting very different Americas from the past. Debate ensues about whether they should be removed. Imagine, though, that someone had suggested painting a new one. In the old way.

So what about Lynn Nottage and Christopher Wheeldon, the two creative artists charged with the Jackson project? In recent days, both have given interviews in which they try to thread a very fine needle. In the case of Nottage, the book-writer, she first told Baz Bamigboye of the Daily Mail that she “believed” Robson and Safechuck, following a now-common edict that reflects the argument that survivors of abuse historically have had great difficulty in being heard, and, therefore, now deserve to be believed. “I think they were telling the truth,” she said.

Which begs the question: Why then are you participating in a musical produced by an estate that is calling the two men liars?

The statement also infuriated Jackson fans, who called for Nottage to be fired. And, presumably, it upset the estate, given their public statements on the matter. Then, in a judicious subsequent interview with the New York Times, Nottage walked that back: “What I was saying, and what I was getting at,” she told Michael Paulson, “is that the men came across as very believable. But here’s the caveat: Were they ultimately telling the truth? I cannot 100 percent say so, because I’m not judge and jury, and it’s not my place to do that.”

That is a fair point: the documentary was not a court of law and its content, most fair-minded people would say, did not rise to the level of legal proof. And the accused had no chance to defend himself. But then again, very few of the recent cases discussed above have been fully resolved in a court of law. Weinstein is about to stand trial. But his detractors have not waited for a verdict to condemn. It is hard to imagine someone now making a musical about him, or his auteurship, or anyone buying a ticket.

In the Times interview, both Nottage and Wheeldon essentially said, look, trust us, we’re artists, we understand complexity, none of us are wholly good or wholly bad and we’re going to create an art work that reflects both those sides of Michael Jackson, a show that could be enjoyed by those who believed the young men’s accounts and those who took Jackson’s side. In other words, a complicated, truthful show that will reveal a fuller vision of Jackson.

To wit.

Wheeldon: “This is obviously challenging — it makes this not without its complications, for sure — but part of what we do as artists is we respond to complexity.”

Nottage: “I see the artwork that we’re making as a way to more deeply understand Michael Jackson and process feelings, and ultimately that’s what theater can do.”

I’ve long argued to young writers that critics should always be on the side of complexity and resist binary thinking, life being otherwise and human flaws and hidden agendas existing at every turn. Still, I’ve been wrestling mightily with whether I think these are fair arguments — as distinct from rationalizations from otherwise progressive artists now in a difficult set of circumstances — and whether it is even remotely possible for a musical featuring Michael Jackson songs to be, in Wheeldon’s words, “a show that’s balanced.“

There are several thorny issues. One is that the permission, the dispensing of grand rights, and much of the content of the artists’ paychecks, is coming from an estate that does not share this view, at least in public. Is it really going to allow any suggestion otherwise in the final product? There is no evidence that it will.

The second is that for “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” to be a hit, it will have to rely on Jackson fans, and it will have to give them a good time. Many people now feel that it is inappropriate, given these allegations, to dance or sing along with music inherently tainted by biography. That is a very reasonable position.

Certainly, no jukebox show authorized by a living artist or an estate has ever dealt with anything quite like this. In Broadway biographies, peccadilloes and mistakes sometimes get a brief airing (as in “Summer, the Donna Summer Musical,” involving the subject’s controversial comments about gays), but they are quickly resolved. In an authorized voice. And then back to the dance party.

If the Jackson estate actually allows Nottage and Wheeldon to even hint at anything in “Leaving Neverland” in “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” that would make this the most remarkable jukebox musical in the history of Broadway.

On the other hand, what choice does the estate have?

From its point of view, cancellation would be far worse, putting a chill on the Jackson brand that might last for decades or forever. If they’re smart, they’ll let these two do what they feel they should. And as for Nottage and Wheeldon, they’re now under a moral obligation to at least partly sink their teeth into the hand that feeds them.

Michael Jackson Musical DON'T STOP 'TIL YOU GET ENOUGH to Hold Creative Lab

The new Michael Jackson musical Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough has been making its controversial way towards Broadway, first announcing a Chicago run then cancelling shortly after the documentary Leaving Neverland premiered. The production wasn't deterred, announcing a cold open on Broadway in summer of 2020.

It appears these plans are still in place as the project is seeking cast members for a creative lab this fall.

Skilled actor and singer; and Young Michael Jackson - 10, Great singer/dancer/actor to portray Michael at age 10.

The lab dates are currently listed as Mid September - Mid November 2019.

The new musical Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough will feature a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and a score made up of some of the best-loved, top-selling songs in recording history. Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph.

Re: Michael Jackson Musical DON'T STOP 'TIL YOU GET ENOUGH to Hold Creative Lab

What do you mean? what's wrong?

Dan Reed (single minded documentary film maker) and almost every journalist in the world has been trashing MJ since January this year.

Personally, I won't be attending ANY musicals which involve 'documentary film makers' or journalists, (even as fictional characters). Have been fighting their nonsense daily, which is very effective ''aversion therapy''.

Re: MJ Musical 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough' [General Discussion]

Oh. i find it strange that it's broadway musical take place in 1992. all fans knows what's happens after that. we don't know how will this musical be all we know that Michael will be also an child in this. i'm not sure what their going for. the estate is apart of this. so hopefully this will be good. i just find it strange that it have to be 1992. why can't it be thriller or bad era? heck maybe put off the wall there too. we just got to wait and see. i really hope that's it's good and that it does an great job.

this is something we never had before. i just hope their won't ruin it and why it's has to be 1992 before we all knows what comes next?

i'm not really a fan of the dangerous era to began with. it may change in the future. but i do like some of the songs during that era.

Michael Jackson Stage Musical Gets New Title, ‘MJ’ (EXCLUSIVE)

A new musical based on the life and career of Michael Jackson is getting a title change, Variety has learned. Originally christened “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough,” the show will now be known as “MJ.” It’s currently in a multi-week development phase in New York City and is scheduled to hit Broadway in the summer of 2020.
“We can confirm that the Michael Jackson musical has a new title,” Rick Miramontez, a spokesman for the show, said. “As the show has evolved through its development process, the production felt that ‘MJ’ was a better and stronger choice than relying on the title of any one individual song.”

That effort, however, has been overshadowed by multiple allegations of child sexual abuse that have been leveled over the years against the late pop icon. That controversy was reignited by a recent HBO documentary “Leaving Neverland,” which featured lengthy interviews with two Jackson accusers, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who claim that singer groomed them and abused them when they were young boys. Jackson, who died in 2009 at the age of 50, and the Jackson family have denied all of the abuse allegations. Last winter, in the wake of “Leaving Neverland’s” release, the musical’s producers canceled a Chicago tryout.

“MJ” features a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage (“Ruined”) and will rely on the pop star’s extensive catalog of hits for its music. Jackson’s songs include “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” “The Way You Make Me Feel,” and “Smooth Criminal.” Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon (“An American in Paris”) will direct and choreograph.

Re: A new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway!

I'm so tired of the 'toes' pic. They overuse it so much, at least this time it's done in a different style.

The King of Pop and This is It concerts had a great art direction.

Exactly. they should of got someone to do a logo for them.

Like the new title. Here's hoping it truly doesn't suck and whatever "re-writes" they did doesn't actually go down the worst case scenario route.
