The Michael Jackson Musical: 'MJ'

Re: A new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway!

It's odd.

What is it about the Dangerous tour rehearsals they find interesting? What do they think the general audience would find interesting?
Sure, This Is It did well in cinemas but that was in the wake of MJ's death and morbid curiosity took over.

I can see why many people may be interested in the actual videos of Dangerous tour rehearsal at Neverland if they find them online, but to watch a cast pretend to rehearse? Strange.

This was not a "comeback" tour.
It was by no means his first world tour.
It has nothing to do with the major success of his biggest albums, Thriller and BAD - they would be the obvious subjects to cover, so I'm actually I'm glad they're moving away from those.
There was no new album to release. It was already out.
There were no allegations at that point, and I guess the MJ Estate will avoid them at all costs anyway.

I know I must be missing something here so I'll keep an open mind, but what events could be of interest?? WHAT is the hook they'll use to sell the idea to audiences??? On the face of it, the Dangerous Tour is not an obvious selling point.

also, if they're only going to tackle rehearsals, does that mean they're going to keep starting and stopping performances, with faltering vocals and choreography? As would happen in real rehearsals? Smoothly running faultlessly from one complete song to another wouldn't be very realistic.

Yeah, but I'm personally glad they've given this a different perspective rather than 'this guy made Thriller so here's the Thriller story'. I've got no idea how they'll pull this off, and to be honest it could be a complete failure but it might end up being brilliant.

Maybe they'll dive into the story of the songs and MJ trying to decide what songs to include?

Bohemian Rhapsody makes Live Aid to be their long awaited live return after years, when in reality their highly successful Works World Tour had ended just over a year before. Drama sells, it seems.

The Michael Jackson estate and Columbia Live Stage revealed more information on the new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson on Wednesday (Jan. 23).

The previously confirmed production will be titled Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough and is currently in development. Two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage will create the book, while Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph.

The musical will premiere in Chicago with its first performance on Oct. 29 at the James M. Nederlander Theatre and run through Dec. 1. Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough is set to make its Broadway debut in 2020.

Im sooooo excited bout this and i dont even live in chiago

Re: A new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway!

They had said it would center around a pivotal moment in Michael's life, and I had hoped it would be the time when he didn't get the best album nomination for Off the wall, and went on to make Thriller.
However I saw another press release that this is going to be during the dangerous rehearsals and the allegations hit. So it seems the estate is going there. I'm honestly very surprised.
Maybe this is their way to tell Michael's side of the story.

Breaking: Michael Jackson DON'T STOP 'TIL YOU GET ENOUGH Cancels Chicago Premiere, Opens Cold on Broadway Summer 2020

The new musical Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough will now have its world premiere on Broadway when it opens in summer of next year. Its previously announced pre-Broadway engagement in Chicago has been cancelled.

Producers and the Michael Jackson estate cite the reason for cancellation as scheduling difficulties brought about by the recent Actors Equity strike, but according to The New York Times, the recent documentary "Leaving Neverland" may have influenced the decision. The documentary, which premiered at Sundance last month, examines molestation claims made against Jackson by two men who denied the allegations at trial but then sued the estate following Jackson's death.

The new musical Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough will feature a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and a score made up of some of the best-loved, top-selling songs in recording history. Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon will direct and choreograph.

The producers also announced that the musical's First National Tour will premiere in Chicago.

A developmental work session will take place in New York City this fall.

The media is full of shit again. Someone at the New York Times speculates that it MAY have something to do with the documentary and then it's reported as historical fact.

This has nothing to do with the mockumentary but the strike.

The Estate responded to me

As indicated in the news reporting on this, this is a direct effect of the Actor’s Equity strike. Since it’s very unusual to open directly on Broadway, the decision is actually evidence in the confidence in the shows.

Best,
Alicia

Thanks, but how is the decision to cancel evidence in the confidence in the show?

Hi:
Because it is very unusual for a show to open on Broadway. They believe it will do very well without the leadup in Chicago.

Again, the decision to open on Broadway is COMPLETELY unrelated to the documentary.

Re: A new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway!

It is best to bring it out this fall. I would not want it out right now no matter what the reason. let us knock these lying fools off first and proved their nonense of lies and then we get back to business.

Re: A new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway!

I can't wait to see this! I guess we will have to wait until 2020.

I am so glad that this show will delay the premiere. It did NOT need to be released now. The racist, trash media would have never focused on the show. They would have focused on the bull@#$*, as they have always done when it comes to Michael.

I'm seeing this comment which is apparently from the writer of the musical. If true, I don't know who they expect would actually go to see this musical. Fans certainly would not go, and I doubt 'non-fans' would spend money on it. Sounds like they need a new writer.....

Lynn Nottage Discusses Michael Jackson Depiction In Upcoming Bio-Musical Following HBO Documentary

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage is currently at work developing the book of a stage musical based on the life and career of music legend Michael Jackson.

Following the premiere of the HBO documentary Leaving Neverland earlier this year, in which two men allege sexual abuse at the hands of Jackson, some questions arose as to how the musical would approach the history of pedophilia and sexual abuse allegations brought against the singer.

Baz Bamigboye of The Daily Mail is now reporting that Nottage, an affirmed believer of Jackson's accusers, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, has confirmed that she is continuing work on the show, with the hopes of telling the story of a person who was "a genius but...immensely flawed."

The Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage announced that they are developing a stage musical inspired by the life of "The King of Pop" last summer.

Jackson was one of the most popular entertainers in the world, and was the best-selling music artist during the year of his death. Jackson's contributions to music, dance, and fashion along with his publicized personal life made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades.

The eighth child of the Jackson family, Michael made his professional debut in 1964 with his elder brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon as a member of the Jackson 5. He began his solo career in 1971 while at Motown Records.
In the early 1980s, Jackson became a dominant figure in popular music. His music videos, including those of "Beat It", "Billie Jean", and "Thriller" from his 1982 album Thriller, are credited with breaking racial barriers and transforming the medium into an art form and promotional tool. The popularity of these videos helped bring the television channel MTV to fame. Jackson's 1987 album Bad spawned the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", "Bad", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Man in the Mirror", and "Dirty Diana", becoming the first album to have five number-one singles in the nation. He continued to innovate with videos such as "Black or White" and "Scream" throughout the 1990s, and forged a reputation as a touring solo artist.

Through stage and video performances, Jackson popularized a number of complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk, to which he gave the name. His distinctive sound and style has influenced numerous artists of various music genres.

A Broadway-bound Michael Jackson musical is already stirring controversy, and it hasn’t even been seen yet.

Last week, the show’s book writer, Lynn Nottage, stepped into a minefield when she gave an interview to the Daily Mail in which she suggested that she found the two men who detailed abuse allegations against Jackson in a new documentary to be truthful.

Jackson’s most passionate defenders — a group known for its ardency — went to war, immediately demanding that Ms. Nottage, a two-time Pulitzer winner and one of America’s most respected dramatists, be fired.

This was not the first time the documentary, “Leaving Neverland,” has cast a shadow over the embryonic musical, “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough.” In the days before the documentary aired on HBO in March, the musical’s producers — the Michael Jackson Estate and Columbia Live Stage — postponed a scheduled developmental session, citing a labor issue, and canceled a planned pre-Broadway production in Chicago.

But now the musical’s producers say they are back on track, planning a workshop this fall and aiming for Broadway next summer.

And Ms. Nottage, joined by the musical’s director and choreographer, Christopher Wheeldon, sat down for an interview to discuss the documentary and their show

Both are lifelong Jackson fans — she was wowed by “ABC” and “Off the Wall,” and he by “Bad.” And both have impressive credentials — Ms. Nottage, best known for the plays “Ruined” and “Sweat,” is now adapting “The Secret Life of Bees” as an Off Broadway musical, and Mr. Wheeldon’s 2015 stage version of “An American in Paris” earned 12 Tony Award nominations.

Here are edited excerpts from the conversation:

When the documentary came out, did you think about withdrawing from this project?

WHEELDON I don’t think we did. This is obviously challenging — it makes this not without its complications, for sure — but part of what we do as artists is we respond to complexity.

NOTTAGE All of the emotions that I was feeling were very complicated, and I think a lot of people out there are processing and dealing with those same emotions. I see the artwork that we’re making as a way to more deeply understand Michael Jackson and process feelings, and ultimately that’s what theater can do.

Does either of you believe that Michael Jackson was a child molester?

WHEELDON It’s a very difficult question to answer, especially in the position that we are, making this musical right now. The recent documentary is very believable, but our position in making this show is that we’re trying to make a show that’s balanced. So I don’t know that I have a definitive answer for you. Those are questions that we’re asking in our process.

NOTTAGE It’s really hard to traffic in absolutes. Do I believe he was a pedophile? I don’t know that I can say one way or the other. I don’t think any of us can say with absolute certainty, because we’ve been presented with some information, but Michael Jackson is dead, he’s not in a position to defend himself. It does hurt my heart to think about the possibility that it could be true, and I pray that it isn’t true, and that’s all I can do. I’m not going to be a Michael apologist, but I can’t say 100 percent.

You were quoted saying you believed the men who accused him.

NOTTAGE What I was saying, and what I was getting at, is that the men came across as very believable. But here’s the caveat: Were they ultimately telling the truth? I cannot 100 percent say so, because I’m not judge and jury, and it’s not my place to do that.

WHEELDON You can’t watch the documentary without being profoundly disturbed by it, but again, we’re not judge and jury. In our process, we’re facing it pretty much head on, but we’re also studying the many facets of Michael Jackson.

NOTTAGE We’re not journalists. Folks have to remember we’re theater artists that are examining the life of this very complicated artist. We can ask certain questions, but our job is not to answer those questions. My job is to reflect and interrogate and present.

WHEELDON And paint a balanced picture. Yes, lean into the complexities, lean into the darkness, but also recognize the great amount of music and film and choreography that Michael left behind.

Did the estate put any restrictions on what you could address?

NOTTAGE No, they absolutely didn’t. Up until this point they have not, and I don’t believe they will. Initially when we sat down to do this musical we really had a very honest conversation with the estate — that if we can’t tell this full story then perhaps we are not the right people to do it. They know who I am as a writer. I’m very deeply invested in approaching my work with honesty and integrity.

WHEELDON I don’t think either Lynn or I would be working on this if we felt like there were restrictions on what we can and can’t talk about.

NOTTAGE That said, we don’t know whether it’s going to be a musical about some of the issues that your colleagues have raised. But we need the room for discovery and we need the room for process without being censored before we get there.

Have you considered walking away?

NOTTAGE I’m very committed to this collaboration with Chris. We have, up until this point, created a piece of art that I feel very proud of, and I think it would be a damn shame to walk away from it now. We created a piece of art that’s very truthful and very beautiful. That said, have I had restless, sleepless nights? Absolutely, and I probably will continue until the day we open.

Some fans are calling for you to be fired.

NOTTAGE There will be people from every side who, no matter what we create, will condemn us, and we are prepared to enter into that very difficult space in order to make art.

The fan base is intense.

NOTTAGE I would ask that the fans be respectful to the process, and trust us as artists. And I do in some ways feel up to the challenge of telling this story, as scary as it is, because of the great divide that exists. But, in this day and age, I feel like if we as artists run away from complexity, then who are we?

What is your approach to this project?

NOTTAGE We didn’t want to create the typical jukebox musical. One of the things that I reject is when you try to do these cradle-to-grave stories — I don’t think they’re that interesting. So we’re focusing on just one period of his life that’s really representative of his life as a whole — we opted to look at the early ’90s, and very specifically the “Dangerous” tour, which was the apotheosis of his creative journey.

How are you dealing with the more problematic aspects of his life?

WHEELDON We’re about to go back to our rewriting process, and obviously we’re not doing the show in a vacuum. We’re sensitive to what’s going on and we’ll see whether it works into the show or not. But the primary focus of our show has always been focusing on Michael’s creative process.

NOTTAGE I know that everyone wants us to say, “This is what we’re doing,” but we’re trying to figure out what we want to do day by day. We’re really trying to figure out how do we tell this story in a way that’s respectful.

Respectful to who?

NOTTAGE To all of us. To all of the people who are involved in the collaboration. Respectful to the music that was made. We’re doing the due diligence to think about how do you talk about the musical legacy of someone who was a genius but also came with a lot of baggage?

Does musical theater allow for a serious discussion of tough issues?

NOTTAGE We’re really deeply invested in shifting the paradigm of musical-making, and particularly the jukebox musical. And Broadway certainly is ready for a musical that’s a little more serious. We want this to be a musical that everyone can come to, regardless of how they feel about Michael Jackson, and they will leave with a better understanding of who he was as a human being.

Re: A new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway!

Like I say, if they want to being the claims into the play, they better bring out the LIES told on MJ by these liars and what was said IN COURT to prove these lies. To me, I still do not trust them.

I don't think the actual accusations don't belong in any kind of way in artistic work about the artist or the person Michael Jackson cause this accusations happend AFTER the artist and the person passed away.
So these accusations don't belong to Michael Jacksons life cause he didn't interact with it.
A artistic work can or should only cover the life and what happened in it of someone special like Michael Jackson not what happenend after it.
This would then cover not anymore the life of this person it would cover the lifes of other people.

Re: A new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway!

They seem to be backpedaling now

I see the artwork that we’re making as a way to more deeply understand Michael Jackson

How can anyone 'more deeply understand Michael' (or create an artwork that aims to do that), if the writer's views and their resulting artwork are partly based on known lies.

This musical will just be a way to keep the controversy alive. Who (aside from journalists) wants that?

I hope this musical never comes to the UK.

(and based on these comments I can't see how the Estate arbitration case against HBO can possibly succeed). Reed just has to say that his film is a 'way to more deeply understand Michael'.) Own goal by the Estate.

I agree. but I get sick when these people want to talk about it they do not talk about the LIES said in court or about the accusers in dept. Talk about the "dark side" to these accusers and claims.

Maybe some powerful people and companys who also wanted to give birth to LN wants that...

Pervert Hollywood maybe also....

Oprah maybe want to make the indruduction on the premier to say once again "This is the moment in time that transperent Michael Jackson and is much bigger then Michael Jackson" or "What I tried to explain to people in 230 episodes in 25 years of the Oprah show is here covered in three hours" ..... Childabuse "feels good" "parents don't understand it doesn't feel like hurt"
I don't know....

I know this was very sacastic once again from me.....

That is some BS from Oprah. There are PLENTY of people she could have use and who are convicted to talk about the issue. No, she did it for ratings thinking MJ's name will pull it in for her. She called Reed. In the end, that nonsense of "transparent" and being "bigger than MJ" was LOST. No one is focused on the issue, people are focus on her helping promote these liars and now all the lies are coming out. And do real victims want their cause connected to Wade/James and accusing an innocent man? I think not.

What is wrong with the estate? Enough is enough with this woman. I don't trust her to paint Michael in anything but a negative light. I wish they'd just fire her already.

I agree. Her backpedaling does not reassure me of anything. Either leave this shit out of the show, fire the writers and get new ones, or hell, scrap the entire thing altogether and don't bother.

And also, **** R&S and Reed and everyone involved with LN and all its lies. This show could be ruined because of them. Hope they're happy.

Re: A new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway!

Anyone who doubts Michael, even deserves to pronounce his name and especially his art. His life was ruined because of that!
May they go to hell with those who doubt him wherever they say evil!
"haaaa go to hell" as Michael Jackson would say

Re: A new musical inspired by the life of Michael Jackson is heading to Broadway!

And look at the heading comment 'We are not JUDGE AND JURY". Well, if my memory is good. a JUDGE and JURY RULED in favor of Michael. One in 2005-whom Wade testified in front of as well, One in 2014, and one in 2018, and TWO GRAND JURIES threw out 1993. So what is the problem Lynne and Chris now?

The Estate have been a failure from day 1. Yes, they made money, but a donkey could have made money from Michael Jackson after his death with everything he left behind and the legacy he built. They have shown time and time again that not only are they incompetent, but they just don't care enough. I'm done with them.

They know that, but they want to ignore or forget that point.
