Yeah Spike replied to the person who asked him and Joe Vogel retweeted Spike's reply. The question was if it was to come out on DVD or Cinema to which Spike replied BOTH. I know twitter is hard to get sometimes, lol.

I'm guessing it would probably be TV and then DVD release because if he said both in theaters & on TV, how would they do that at the same time? It would be great if it got a cinema release, but I'm not gonna be holding my breath. But I hope it gets as big of a release as possible whether it's shown in theaters or on a major network channel. That would be the best outcome.

Well, the question didn't involve the TV release, so he was only responding to the DVD/Theatrical release. I'm sure he meant to say both will happen, but not at the same time. Filmmaker and director Spike Lee is heading up a special documentary on Michael Jackson that looks at the late musician’s illustrious Bad album. The flick, which just entered post-production, arrives right around the 25th anniversary of Bad and the renowned world tour that followed it.
The film will feature interviews with everyone from Sheryl Crow to Kanye West to Cee Lo Green, as well as some of the King of Pop’s close friends.
“I’m more than just a huge fan of Michael Jackson, and having the chance to actually know him and work with him, I deeply care about his legacy,” Spike said in an official statement, adding that the stories enabled him to “uncover just what made this such a huge, important coming of age in [Jackson’s] career and unearth compelling stories surrounding the making of the album... the short films and the tour that may have never seen the light of day.”
In addition to the movie, plenty of other Badcelebrations are planned for this year. On September 18, BAD 25 will arrive – a deluxe package offering three CDs, two booklets and a DVD chronicling one of the Bad tour shows at London’s Wembley Stadium on July 16, 1988. More plans include a Bad 25 two-disc standard set, packed with the album and a disc of fresh remixes and demos.

In order to be eligible for an academy awards, the documentary MUST have at least one week run in LA AND Manhattan. They might do that just for the Oscars, then release it to TV stations around the world, close to #Bad25 release date. DVD & blu Ray will come later...as most films & TV Shows also get released in that format.

If they get this out in cinemas :wild:, then there is still chance to get a major biographical one over Michael's entire life out in cinemas as well! Which would mean greater exposure. More new fans. A boost to sales of his back catalogue.

Absolutely!
Last year or was early this year,the estate was looking into making biographical movie of Michael's life.
I personally prefer documentary over movie. Movie can be quite fictional but documentaries tend to be factual, and if they show how MJ was treated all of his life (including court cases and all), I'd be happy to see his name to be cleared.

That sounds like a good explanation to me.
I'm sure that somebody said the 20 minute clip of the documentary was sent to TV networks. Why do that if you plan for this to be in cinemas first? However, if they plan a limited to run to qualify for awards then that makes sense. Also, mkgenie told me this is aimed at TV. I don't think his sources mentioned cinema when asked about it.

Paul simon's graceland 25 th anniversary had a documentary called 'under african skies' which premiered at film festivals (don't think it was in cinemas). It's out on dvd and was shown on bbc1 this month. That's the type of media exposure that i would like for bad25 - i'd be disappointed if it was just something that fans would buy/go and see, so that's why appearing on a major tv network would be great.
Ironically, quincy appears in the graceland documentary, odd that he's not on this one, but as vogel tactfully put it, his memories are probably sharper in old interviews.

I was wondering, if this is going to Blu-Ray, why they didn't throw in the BAD 25 package? Then I thought, maybe beacuse they will try cinemas and hit the DVD/Blu-Ray directly after, that's the only explanation to why this is not included on the BAD 25 pkg. At least I hope so, but I'm getting very excited, pretty sure Spike did a great job!

I hope they throw in a copy of the documentary into the $199 Special Edition Bad 25 case.
ETA: I heard Spike just showed a preview of the documentary at the Apple store in SoHo. Was anyone there? If so, can you share what he showed?
