Tribute Concert Promoters Fail to Sway Jackson Fan Clubs

By JAMES C. MCKINLEY JR.
The promoters of a Michael Jackson tribute concert tried to dispel the concerns of fan clubs Monday during a series of international conference calls on Wednesday, but leaders of some large groups said afterwards they were still opposed to the event.
For weeks, fan clubs have criticized the promoters for staging the “Michael Forever” concert in Wales on Oct. 8, around the same time as the involuntary manslaughter trial in California of Dr. Conrad Murray, the physician who was caring for Mr. Jackson when he died in June 2009. Several fan clubs have criticized the promoters for not releasing details about how much money from the concert’s proceeds will go to two charities that Mr. Jackson had supported during his life. Many have also said the promoters should have reached an agreement with Mr. Jackson’s estate before staging the concert.
“In all honesty, they haven’t answered any of my questions,” said Gary Taylor, the president of the Micheal Jackson Community in Britain, which has 80,000 registered members. “Where is the money going? Who is benefiting?”
“They just don’t want to listen to what we have to say,” he added.

Juliette Harris, a spokeswoman for the promoter, Global Live Events, said the goal of the calls was to open a dialogue with the fan clubs and counter some false reports on fan Web sites, among them the charge that none of the ticket proceeds would go to charity and that the tickets could not be refunded. “We are not trying to persuade people or change their minds,” she said. “Our goal is to say ‘Here are the facts.’”
The opposition of the major fan club groups presents a problem for the promoter, Chris Hunt, a British filmmaker who formed Global Live Events this spring to put on the show. The fan clubs wield influence with many of the people most likely to buy tickets to the events. Mr. Hunt did not take questions from the heads of fan clubs Wednesday. Instead Global Live was represented during the calls by another executive, Andy Picheta.
The concert has divided the Jackson family. Janet Jackson and Jermaine Jackson – who have had the most successful solo careers – are boycotting the event, along with their brother Randy Jackson, because it conflicts with the trial. La Toya Jackson and three other siblings – Tito, Marlon and Jackie — are planning to attend and may perform.
The executors of Michael Jackson’s estate, which is not controlled by any of the siblings, have also raised questions about the charitable intentions of the promoters. They have made it plain the promoters may not use Mr. Jackson’s image, name or other intellectual property to sell the concert.
Wesley Noorhoff, the president of the Legendary Michael Jackson Fan Association in the Netherlands, which has 25,000 members, said the conversation with Global Live officials had not swayed him. Holding the concert during the trial and excluding the estate from the project still bothered his members, he said.
“We are still not behind the concert,” he said after the telephone call. “The biggest problems we have are the timing and not working with the Michael Jackson estate and not getting all the Jacksons onboard.”

Do not say that :nono: :( .... Look at the mess :fear:, it really has to be canceled!!!

I still have hope.... :timer:

It is still possible for it to be cancelled. I just don't think it will especially if they cater to the other artists fans. It seems no matter what is said to them they are determined no matter what to have a show.

I don't think these people should make it sound like they work with the estate when the estate made it very clear publically they have nothing to do with this. I agree that the family really can't accept that Michael left them out of his will. Yet they are determined to get money from him even in death just like in life. The family especially is making a huge mistake in alienating Michael's fans. They are obviously not thinking of the consequences of that down the road.

It does bother me that the estate is not involved. I look at it as Michael created that and they should be part of a tribute for him. It would be much better with the resources they can share.

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

I am disgusted!! Go take a look at the new Cirque clip and see how they are paying attention to every little detail trying to make it perfect. Just like Michael did. Look how they have hired people who knew Michael for so many years and danced with him. They want to get it right. They appear to want it to be up to Michael's incredibly high standards.

Now look at this tribute in Wales. Just a bunch of random acts that don't appear to have any personal meaning to Michael and they are just throwin it all together.Just a big cluster f**k!

I support you 100% Gaz. Thank for having Michael's back. Now go get em...

And please tell me how they didn't know Michael Jackson has the most passionate fans on the planet? Oh they just didn't realize. Duh?!!!

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

^^Excellent letter. I am glad the clubs that took part are still not supporting the tribute. Let's be honest here; none of the problems that the forums have have been addressed or corrected. We still do not have an international galaxy of stars; the estate is still not involved; we do not know the complete details of the charity contribution; prices are still too high; and on and on.

ilmjj, they never took us seriously from the beginning, and that was their downfall. Now they are beginning to realize that Michael's fans are a strong force to contend with. Hopefully, people who might try to exploit us in the future are taking notice. I would say potential schemers beware of us!!!!!

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

If there was ever ANY doubt about motivations, that sealed-the-deal. He was hawking PERFUME, and Vodka, and was obviously taking credit for his son's achievements. And yes, the children were trotted out for video and photo-ops. It was completely shameless.

Omg he was doing that there?? !! ...then again im not suprised at all. Tisk tisk joe seriously when will u wake up!

I cant belive hes still going on with that stupid cologne grrr

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

We have not been hearing much about Joe's involvement in this concert, but he must be involved in the merchandising since he has the MJ logo. I wonder if LaTonta will sing "He's My Brother?"

You know the letters from the press forgot to mention that Tito and Jackie said they only took part to support their mother. In a sense we have grandma and La Tonta as the only ones who fully agree with the tribute, if we are to believe the boys.

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

So this thing is still going forward.... Depressing... I don't believe it will be cancelled at this point. Those people are completely shameless. Money is all they see and they dont care about the rest.

The million dollar question is, why if they want to make money from the fans, do they go about it all wrong? It just seems obvious as to what they should be doing, but they aren't in anyway. Why do you think Priscilla after all these years is still making money from her Elvis connection? Because she did things the right way and she sure as hell never ever exploited Elvis's heir.

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

I think the Jacksons didn't expect such response from the fans. They honestly believed that Michael's fans were also theirs and that we would support their every move. Rude awakening for them.

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

I haven't been on the forum so much these past 2 weeks due to starting an international year abroad at a different uni and country but just wanted to drop in and catch up. I just wanted to say I'm fully supporting you Gaz and the movement against this tribute. Good to see they have approached you but so not happy with the excuses they are giving. Don't give up the fight, we are doing this for Michael.

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

I wouldn't conclude yet that it won't be canceled. There are two things that will determine whether or not they go ahead: whether they can at least break even on expenses, and whether they face any serious legal challenge to their right to hold the concert or involve the "charity" aspect. So much amateurishness and ineptitude has been involved that I doubt their chances of success.

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

Michael showed the door to L. Rowe, Joe and his entourage so must we.

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

I will never support a concert where they hire people that mocked MJ

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

Bottom line is if they had asked the estate for permission and had booked the A List of musical celebrities to perform the fans would have been the first to put their hands in their pockets to buy tickets. No fan is going to support something where the artist being celebrated is not able to be named!

i don't think Joe owns the History logo.

Before you throw Gaz under the bus read the front of the forum where it shows the tweets. I think you owe him an apology. If you dont have a twitter account then you should make one..

I did the conference call. I was very to the point in my demands and I will not back down until I get them.

I didn't see anything posted here about it... Or did I just miss it? I'm not throwing him under the bus but really, do you think I would have said what I did had I known about the conference call? However I don't have twitter and don't plan on getting it so my only source is what I read here. And the last thing I read here was that he, we, were not going to participate. I'm glad he changed his mind and did the conference call.

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

This is a MONEY-MAKING venture for the Jackson family. Period. The "trust" they say they will set up for Michael's children is a joke. They have no need of it. I think the Jacksons are having huge issues in facing the fact that they really WERE left out of the will, intentionally, by Michael. I do hope this will be canceled, and it will be a wake-up call, and that the family will learn that they really do have to figure out how to support. . .themselves. . . as nearly everyone else does.

The way I see it, Michael's will was his ultimate revenge to all the nastiness, jealousy, and pain they put him through over the years (Latoya, Joe, Jermaine, Randy, and the list goes on and on and on). Everything would've been just 'good' if he had at least lived til his kids were 18 but unfortunately it just wasn't meant to be. It kills me inside to see all this happening.

His death wasnt meant to be - not yet anyway & certainly not in the hands of murray

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

I'm guessing the whole "conference call" thing is over. NOW WHAT?

Do they think the Michael Jackson SHEEP will come-a-running because they held a conference call with some of the fan site heads?

It's embarrassing that they even had to hold a conference call in the first place, in my opinion. I mean, when in the history of concerts did a promoter ever have to hold a conference call with fans in order to answer questions and attempt to garner support. It's unheard of!

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

Did Gaz explain what his demands were? I checked twitter, but I didn't find anything specific.

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

i don't think Joe owns the History logo.
He does not but he has business dealing with the person who does. They have been working together on merchandising.

Any news on ticket sales today. I want sales to be low, so they can cancel this thing.

Sometimes I think it will be cancelled, but other times I don't because they keep adding new names. This might end up to be a variety show of artists doing their own thing and singing some J5 songs. It seems that right now they just want to make a show at all costs. They have already forgot about Michael's legacy, which was never their main interest anyway. This show was to make some money from merchandising, to get money into the hands of Jackson supporters, and use other artists and Michael in the process--all this so Michael's fans and the other artists' fans would rush out and buy tickets. They put in the charity bit to make it seem it was a humanitarian event and to generate more interest. That is why they are so stubborn about going ahead. If it was really for Michael, after all the uproar they would say we are trying to do something for you guys and you don't care so to hell with it, or they would have fixed all the problems. They are not doing either, so this has other agendas attached to it.

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

all comes down to money imo if they sell enough to make a profit it will go on how big a profit depends on how much they want it to happen just to piss the fans off. if its not gonna make them enough money it wont happen. cause thats all this event is about at the end of the day

Re: Michael Forever Tribute/ MJJC Official Statement / Discussion / Estate statement / Fan letter @p

^^That's true Elusive

Blue eyed, I am curious, your friends who want to go, what are their reasons? Are they Michael fans, fans of the other artists or both? Also, are there many people you know who want to go?

Yep, and I think ego might be a part of it as well..They don't want to be seen as complete failures (lol), so they are just desperately trying to get it to work.
