Michael - The Great Album Debate

I would like to know what, very concretely, is Mottola doing NOW in Sony context (if he still does something there)?
(Maybe off topic but we are off topic anyway?)

[h=2]After Sony[/h]Tommy Mottola was the head of Sony Music Entertainment until January 2003. Since leaving his post as chief of Sony Music, Mottola has been building a new entertainment company, complete with recorded music, television production, theater, and fashion, alongside a branding and management company launching[SUP][citation needed][/SUP]. He was instrumental in re-launching the various careers of such artists as Grammy winner and Latin pop star Marc Anthony[SUP][citation needed][/SUP], and teen sensation Lindsay Lohan.[SUP][5][/SUP] Later signings included Cassie Ventura[SUP][citation needed][/SUP] in 2006 and Mika[SUP][citation needed][/SUP], who in 2007 had a #1 single in the UK.
A collaboration with former Miramax chief Harvey Weinstein has them teamed on two current projects for live theater, namely producers of Pink Floyd's The Wall. Mottola's TV production arm is currently producing and developing many shows for cable and network television.
Mottola bought out the rights to Casablanca Records (a then-diminished imprint of Polygram), and resurrected it, signing actress Lindsay Lohan, and singer Mika.

So NOW he has no "official" function at Sony that is known of?
Now, another thing : I don't understand in relation to the clip with the Mottola interview, why was he called the "gate-keeper of unreleased tracks" or what was it that I heard?

BUMPER SNIPPET Thank u for explaining the issue MJ had with Sony and Tommy Mottola so well. I remember when I tried that last yr I got shot down with "MJ only had issues with TM only" crap!

^^Gee I see that in the last 2 pages the views of pollyanna has entered the debate. I firmly agree with looking towards the hopefulness of the future, but we cannot be ahistorical. There is a past history involved here, which includes the release of Michael and all the circumstances related to it. That whole history cannot be ignored because it continues to impact what the estate/sony will present to us in the future, the quality of what they present, and the way in which many fans will view it. This scrutiny of future projects all came about partly due to the historical context of the album Michael, and until many of the mysteries of that album are cleared, fans will always revisit that issue. A good example is: for the BAD campaign are fans only focusing on the happiness of the deal? NO. They are scrutinizing the quality of what they will receive. Why: Because they have the historical context of the Michael album to use as a comparison. Therefore, by all means, let's look forward to the future, but we cannot simple brush the past under the rug.

I think the big question is what are WE going to do about this? Are we just going to let everyone involved get away with it and just focus on the future projects (where it could happen again) or are we going to be forceful to try to get answers? Michael has the most fans out of any celebrity in the world - as a group I'm sure we can do something.

Haven't been in this thread for a long time. What is the plan? Are we just waiting for it to happen again so we can take action? I seriously need the Estate's contact info.

Why would they not sign back with Sony when Michael signed back with the team at Sony/ATV (Which he co-owns) in 2008?

Sony and Michael Jackson have worked together for so many years they released all his most successful albums and it's a lot easier to work with a company that knows you than one that doesn't.

You are giving SONY too much credit. MJ was doing very fine without SONY

Off The Wall
Thriller
Bad

--> those classics and most successful albums were released before SONY had to do anything with MJ.

The only successful album with SONY were Dangerous and History. Had MJ released them without SONY they'd be successful as much.

Good post! Much of the skepticism demonstrated by fans is based on what we have experienced in the past few years. We don't just wake up one day and start to question everything. We have seen mediocre release after mediocre release.

Sony and Michael Jackson have worked together for so many years they released all his most successful albums and it's a lot easier to work with a company that knows you than one that doesn't.

Sony knows Michael? Come on. How? Just because Sony distributed Michael's music. Sony only saw Michael Jackson as a tool to make money. Sony only cared about how much money could Michael's albums made. As a matter of fact, Michael's positions were always at odd with Sony. What Michael wanted were not what Sony wanted. I'm not talking about Invinvible.

I don't understand such strong faith on a corporation which goal is to make money for its shareholders. Not that it's wrong to seek profit. This is a capitalistic world.

Sony only saw Michael Jackson as a tool to make money. Sony only cared about how much money could Michael's albums made.

That is very true but then again every recording company does feel that way bout their clients. It was ten times worse for michael cuz he was MICHAEL JACKSON - BIGGEST SUPERSTAR OF ALL TIME

It's true that michael's most recent projects with sony (that bumper pointed out) are pretty lackluster, done most likely just to fulfill a contract. But still, i'd take 1000 "greatest hits" albums over a single fake michael jackson song. no matter what, as long as michael was alive, we could at least be sure that we'd never get a fake song.

that's one of the reasons this hurt so much. it's the ultimate betrayal, and it just drives home the fact that he's not here. that's why, as fans, we criticize sony and the estate on EVERYTHING: because michael's not here, and we're compensating. We're trying to uphold everything we feel for him and make sure it's done right, because he's not here to do it. we have every right.

i just feel completely betrayed and nothing they do is ever going to make up for it. it's just about profit, and that's all it WILL be about now that the artist is gone. I just don't and can't accept it. i will surely enjoy what they release as the years go by, but their relationship with me, personally, as a consumer was completely destroyed the second i heard breaking news, and i'm not ever going back.

And what still puzzles me is HOW this could happen. Me, a fan..(not a real hardcore fan) can hear it. These were people that were supposed to be specialized in Michael, they handled his business for years. Every man/woman involved in this should have heard it, for crying out loud.

And why is the whole family silent now? I don't get it. If they know more, why don't they share it with the fans? Or are we only important when a new book is coming out or a new song is being released or a new tour is coming?

But when money speak people go deaf.

MJ's family is all about the money, i thought it was pretty obvious by now. If something doesn't involve money it isn't worthy for them. So all in all this is a situation where everyone is chasing the cash and no one gives a damn about MJ.

I don't think it's fair to blame the family. After all regardless of their opinion, there isn't much they can do about it. They can say, like us, that they don't think it's Michael all they want. But they still have no proof, they don't possess masters, they don't have any true mixes from the many producers that these songs are passed to before release, they don't have tapes, or anything else. The Estate and parties involved have already protected themselves, so anything the family says is just their opinion which wouldn't be valuable in court unless a judge forces Sony or something to put the songs under more scrutiny and test them out through analysis more than they previously have been, supposedly.

They still had rights to his back catalog so I would assume MJ would have to be with the team, no? Atleast to have some say. So I'm guessing that and the History MJ had there made it an easy choice among other things for the Estate? Oh and CBS records was before Sony.

I don't want to offend anyone, but if you listen to the newly released demo Don't Be Messin' Around and you still claim that you hear MJ in the Cascio songs you either don't know MJ's voice very well or you simply have some problems with hearing some sounds.

I think you offended some people... ^^

Then they shouldn't blame me for hearing MJ's crystal clear voice on Don't Be Messin' Around and not the same voice on the Cascio songs, but my ears.

Because they "want" to hear Michael even though they know it isn't him. It's easier than facing the truth.

Well, lets just cut to the chase here. Where is your "evidence" for your claims? Until you provide sufficient evidence for your silly claims, you aren't going to be taken seriously. So spill, i can't believe this forum STILL has regular posts...

^^ And you took the precious time to come and comment....We're flattered :)

Im alarmed, that after all this time the hate and resentment (which is unfounded) can find its way into the Bad 25 forums. As i said, you have no evidence for your claims, if your going to continue ruining the experience i think it's fair on someone to ask for a bit of evidence.

I don't think there's hate and resentment but concern about MJ's legacy.

Please don't come here and put us all in the same bag. Most people here are supporting Bad 25 and are not boycotters.
By the way, there's not one trace of evidence that says MJ is singing in those tracks, until someone show us that evidence, this thread will continue, sadly.

larry, why don't you hang out in the BAD25 threads.....That's where all the cool people are :p
