Michael - The Great Album Debate

Oh I totally know what you mean! And that's what I mean when I say that these Cascio songs have no MJ feel to them...Sure, you can tell they're rip-offs, but there is a HUGE difference....Michael was special, he was unique...His magic touch was just that...MAGIC....it doesn't happen unless he's behind that mic...So, when we talk about the composition of the Cascio songs, the lyrics, and just the overall feel, I really do think it's important to consider...Obviously the vocals are paramount to debate...But Michael was an all-encompassing artist...You FEEL him....It's just the way he was, it was his natural talent...When you know that feeling, you never forget it...and when you don't have that feeling, you KNOW it...it's like, instant ...'something's wrong here'...

It's all a question of how our brain processes the information. Our brain constantly compares things. It is not surprising when you hear an MJesque song that your brain will say "wait a minute, this follows the same pattern as the what I've heard before, but is completely a new thing".

Whereas with the Cascio songs, as far as my brain is concerned, it says "wait a minute, those songs had already existed under another shape and the voice is not logical compared to other songs, something's wrong, red flag".

what song is "wait"? and @bumper i know what you mean. the first time i heard "all i do" i KNEW mj was in the backing vocals, but i had never heard the song before and had no idea michael was listed in the credits.

I had exactly the same experience.

By the way, in the 80s, I had listened to THRILLER and BAD album that I know the slightest breath, ah, oooh, heee, slightest instrument, different melodies layered one upon another on each song.

I just can't hear all that in the Cascio songs. The Cascio songs are so poor compared to anything MJ did.

...every hiccup, the EXACT way he pronounces things at the exact right time...breaths, dahs, oohs, hee hees ...just everything...I even know a part in APOM where he clears his throat...It's so faint, but I noticed it right away as a kid...that's how familiar I am with his music and voice...that's why I believe fans are experts...who else would be?

I just wish Michael had sung Hurt on Victory. Can you imagine that such a FUNKY song with MJ's voice? The keyboards are amazing there.

I also would love to hear the instrumental of Be Not Always.

p.s. Cover for Victory album is the best cover ever!

p.p.s. Did you know that there was also a limited edition cover? Here (well it's the same as the poster above. Normally there's no dove on the shoulder):

Definitely the Hurt would be great with Mike in it!

I love the Victory cover...I love how Michael is standing in the background, not front and centre, but his socks and glove are the first thing I notice....:D

I'm just in love with that picture. The galaxy, the road, the spaceship on the left, the city lights, it's so mysterious, so out of this world.

When you watch this cover and when you listen to the song like Torture, Wait or One More Chance, and the chorus on Hurt with keyboards, it's sooooooo unique!

:D :D

I LOVE Michael's part in Torture....'she was up a stair to nowhere...a room forever I'll remember...she stared as though I should have known her...tell me what's your pain or pleasure...every little thing you find here is simply for the thrill you're after...loneliness or hearts of fire...I am here to serve all masters'.....THAT part really does change the feel of the song...Michael really knows how to convey emotion....It's just amazing what he was able to do...effortlessly...I get the same feeling when Michael's part comes in in Can You Feel It.....His brothers sing, and then Michael bursts in like a fire explosioin.....Just amazing!

Yes, as much as MJ's voice adds sparks and bubbles to the song, his brothers' voices in Torture and Can You Feel It are warm and beautiful.

The same goes in their older song "I am love". Or also in the song "Blame It On The Boogie", I just LOOOOVE the background vocals. It's such a harmony!

You were talking about how a song was Michaelesque...When I heard 'Best of Joy' the first time, it reminded me of a typical Barry Gibb (or BeeGee) song. The hooks, the melodylines, the lyrics, the parts where the backingvocals start...the lyrics 'We never say I don't need you' reminds me a bit of 'We don't say goodbye' from 'Immortality' for example.

I saw Michael's lyrics, but to this day I feel Barry had something to do with this. And even if he denies, I believe he just forgot...:D

^^ I always thought 'We need each other...' in BOJ was very Barry Gibb-esque...

I do love the brothers' voices....Very rich and warm....I absolutely love their harmonies! Very distinct and rich, like Michael's....I mean, they're family...:D

Honestly though, listening to Michael's harmonies, for me, is one of the best sounds the ear can experience...

I just love it when Michael just pops in and starts singing unexpectedly...It's just so exciting, gets me all pumped up :wild:
Michael's pop ins in the Jacksons songs or in his other collabs are always great. Some of my favourites that come to mind now:

1. Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin - Always loved it when MJ starts the second verse, especially how he sings "Midnight" and "are we in paradise?". No offense to Jermaine, but MJ's vocals just have so much more power and energy.
2. I Need You - I am not a huge fan of this song, but MJ's vocals at the end are just great.
3. Why - I like the chorus. The end of this song is another example to me of how special MJ's vocals are, when all the 3 T's and then finally Michael sing "tell me why?" Just the contrast between his voice and all the others - his voice just has incredible warmth and emotion.
4. Can You Feel It - When MJ starts singing it really kicks the song into a higher gear.

I just wish Michael had sung Hurt on Victory. Can you imagine that such a FUNKY song with MJ's voice? The keyboards are amazing there.
I know you are referring to lead vocals, but he does sing BG vocals on The Hurt, right? The ones that are similar to the BG vocals in Hollywood Tonight.

I KNEW IT! You can hear the similarity too, right? The 'oooo oooo oooo oooo'....

I LOVE Why....His voice is soooo angelic....and the hiccups...they're so perfect...All these songs that he does backing vocals in, or just small parts, or whatever, they really do just kick the song into the stratosphere....The artists he collaborates with are great, but it's just his rich, unique, magical voice that is really too hard to explain...it's literally an 'experience'...

hahaha...thanks ;) ...But I don't think his voice is really explainable anyway...But, as a fan, you know exactly what I mean...

I don't know if you bought the Opus, but there are some really great explanations of his voice in that book...I'd go find some quotes, but I'm too lazy to go and lift a 26 lb book

Love that performance....I really wish I was old enough to have seen him when he came to Toronto for that tour...Sadly, I was only 2 years old...:(...But my mother's boyfriend saw him on that tour....Of course, he said it was absolutely incredible :D

From the Opus:

'....and what a voice it is, an instrument every bit the equivalent of a Stradivarius: exquisite, distinctive, rare. It never gets lost in the mix of his records; Michael was always too gifted a craftsman to let that happen.'

'...and his voice had never lost its capacity for innocence, wonder, and hope...'

'...firing off his phrases like a 9-mm semi-automatic, Jackson drew a vocal chalk line around "Annie"...'

'At other times through the course of his career, Michael used his voice to portray the victim himself.'

'It also placed him squarely at that crucial intersection many vocalists never reach -- and one that the very best achieve only rarely -- where an artist's metaphoric "voice" combines with a singer's physical voice for an exponentially enhanced impact that neither could accomplish alone.'

'In "Rock With You", he's clearly dressed to impress; the music is as sumptuous and sensuous as anything Michael ever committed to tape, and even the backing vocals are as lush as an orchid corsage. While his aim is clearly to rock with his intended all night and dance her into sunlight, he also makes her a promise, which is all the more believable by the way he conveys it, gift-wrapped in a feather-soft vocal crafted to entice, rather than overpower.'

'....Michael's remarkable instrument continued to remind us that a voice is something more than just the sound of a pair of vocal chords flapping against each other at high velocity, more than the air that rushes across the diaphragm of a studio microphone. It's a conduit that can convey the entire spectrum of human emotion directly from one mind, one heart, to another. It's a seamless blend of art and craft, of gift and effort, of intellect and emotion.

on Billie Jean:

'Michael's first utterance into the microphone is a heavily reverbed whisper of "ch-ch," which, on top of the feline bass riff and heartbeat kick drum and snare, lends a sinister, spooky quality to the track even before he sings so much as a single word. And then...he fires up the turbocharger. With a hiccup like a rifle shot punctuating every few phrases, an almost otherworldly falsetto "hee hee hee", and a double fistful of "huhs" and "woos" sprinkled across the track like improvised explosive devices, he pulls the song out of soap opera land and drops it into a Stephen King novel. Pure, petrifying intensity, and we could never get enough.'

I just love great descriptions of his voice :D

This has been interesting conversation the last page or two. I think its a reminder of what's really important. I love Michael as a humanitarian. I love him as a fashion Icon. I love him as a man and as a dancer. But at the heart of it all what I REALLY love-what I need-is the singer. His voice is what I fell in love with in the first place and its the one thing that will keep me coming back to Michael. Forever.

Been a while since I saw this, but isn't it AWESOME? MJ sounded so amazing live.

But isn't it just so sad how this is the video quality we have to watch in order to see MJ performing this? When there are better quality out there, waiting to get released..

I dont watch MJ live much, its not good enough audio/video quality.
See, this is actually to me an acceptable excuse. The quality simply isn't good enough and just hurts your eyes. Audio sucks, etc. I am pretty much used to it, but I don't like it. Sure we got Bucharest and some history tours in great quality (munich in HD, amazing), but a lot of bad tour stuff, dangerous tour, etc. is just shitty quality, which makes it so little interesting to watch.

^^ It's just that we KNOW we can see this stuff in amazing quality, so it's frustrating to have to be stuck with what's currently out there...lol..

I just love great descriptions of his voice :D
Lol, me too. It's because I can't describe it that way myself. Maybe in Dutch (still not like that^^^^!), but not in English and it's always great to read someone appreciates and loves Michael's vocal talents as much as yourself. No, I don't own the Opus...but I'm interested to know who wrote all these great descriptions. Maybe I can find it on the net.

Yup..ditto and ditto and ditto...I don't understand why not everybody is a fan, lol. Everybody should be...:cheeky:

Yes, there is another clip of this, but the quality is even worse.

I didn't watch any performances of Michael until he died. I wasn't even on the net before that..:bugeyed

So for me there are so many great quality vids on YT. I saw a lot, but still not everything.

Yeah, I don't know who said it...I'd have to look in the index maybe lol...I try not to touch the book too much, I'm scared I'll ruin it or something, since I'm the biggest klutz ever and it would be just my luck :bugeyed lol

I especially love the "Stradivarius" reference :D

Uhu..it's pretty expensive..:D. I don't own much Michael stuff, but I won The Ultimate Collection with a contest and I always was so careful with it, but I left it lying on the livingroom table once and forgot my small children were there too....sigh....they carved big stripes into it...:mat:. They're 15 and 17 now, so it's a long time ago, but I still regret that everytime I see it.

I especially love the "Stradivarius" reference :D
Especially what came after that: 'It never gets lost in the mix of his records; Michael was always too gifted a craftsman to let that happen.'

And when you read all these descriptons...then how on earth can you match that with the Cascio singer? I'd like to know how the writers in The Opus think about 'Michael's voice' on the album and also the unreleased Cascio songs.

awwww...your Ultimate Collection! :(....Yeah, I accidentally sat on my HIStory case and cracked it....Plus, some songs skip cuz I listened to it SO much...I cringe whenever I look at the case lol ....Oh, definitely, the Opus was quite expensive :fear:

That's why I posted these quotes...When you read these descriptions and how they perfectly describe the sound of Michael's voice and emotion and soul that comes out of his mouth, it's very difficult to attribute these things to whoever is singing on those Cascio songs...It just doesn't MATCH...Imagine someone reads these quotes and has only ever heard these Cascio songs, what would they think about that?

My honest thoughts? It depends on who reads them, but many probably agree...:(.
