Michael - The Great Album Debate

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Cascio Controversy Thread)

Ah, you're gonna get me on another topic now.

The MJ intro & outro.

Will You Be There intro
Little Susie intro
Give In To Me outro (so massive)
Don't Stop intro
Dangerous intro

etc...etc

So much thought went into every little second of every single song. Especially on Dangerous (album). No fade outs on there, every song has a specially composed introduction & outro.

Don't forget the God-like intro to Earth Song.....That's something from up above, right there....

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Cascio Controversy Thread)

Two of my favorite lyrics are "DANGEROUS" and "SHOUT". They're perfect.

The lyrics to Shout are great, not too keen on the song though. Dangerous is inspired by the Bible. He literally lifted lyrics straight from the book of proverbs. I mean... WHICH major pop star would do that?

From the Bible:

"For the lips of a strange woman
drop as an honeycomb,
and her mouth is smoother than oil

But her end is bitter as wormwood,
sharp as a twoedged sword..."

Proverbs 5:3

And the heartbeating accompanied with breathing on Smooth Criminal with this melody! A wow effect!

Oh the intro to dangerous, thats modal based on a D pedal, it's cleaver stuff from a pop track, that's why it sounds kinda exotic. He might not have known it was modal, infact i'd prefer it if he didn't, i'd prefer it if he just felt it rather than thinking i'll write something modal. I think off all these bands people love, that just use four or three chords hammered for 3 and a half minutes, this man is on another level.

Yes! His own heartbeat! I loved that he could have used anyone's heartbeat, but that's Michael keeping everything real, raw, and part of the story....Speaking of Smooth Criminal, I really wish he would have left the entire second verse on it...I love it...The way he sings that part staccato in particular...Just amazing...

Oh my God, what have we lost?

I meant Prince could easily learn to play instruments --27 or something! It's innate. Not many musicians can do that.

Indeed. Prince is an incredible instrumentalist. Not a good idea to question his ability.

I always thought those lyrics were a bit too metaphor-heavy. You wouldn't think that a bible quote would be in a song like "Dangerous"! Also, I hate fade-outs in songs, it just ruins the ending to songs that I love to dance to. That's why I love the "Dangerous" album so much, vast majority of them at least don't have fade-outs! It's so disappointing when a song does that because there's always a good way to end a song, like the live versions of "Smooth Criminal".

Speaking of "Smooth Criminal", I hope for Bad 25 they release the full edit of the song, and not the Radio Edit that's on every album! The "Moonwalker" version is so great!

I recommend the last album "WHEREVER YOU ARE" by Sami Yusuf. A brilliant songwriter, composer, musician with a beautiful and heavenly voice. He takes you to another world. Especially the following songs:

"Wherever you are"
"Salam"
"Make me strong"
"Fragile world"
"No word is worthy"
"In every tear He is there"

aha, yeah he's pretty talented, but so's the little kid who can play piano concerto's. You know what i'm saying i think, although i'm being way too harsh here, prince has wrote some amazing songs :D i get touchy mentioning anyone alongside michael aha, it's that fan passion shinning through, gosh this thread is making a lot of people happy :D

Of course! Earth Song blows me away still after 16 years. How can this song have been created. Like the pyramids it doesn't seem humanly possible.

Brilliant - I had no idea

Yes, I remember being entralled with that in 1987-8. SC was my favourite song until Dangerous came along.

the video version of the song as well :D with all the alternative kinda bit's like the bassline when he moonwalks and the new synth sound when everyone starts dancing together later on in the video and all this, and the way the vocals drop out when he starts dancing with that woman near the begining :D such a groove.

The 12" mix of SC really show that to it's full. The bassline we all know is almost played backwards during the verses and the strings are of classical standard.

Yes, the video version is the ultimate...Smooth Criminal is my favourite short-film...There is none higher to me.....It just oozes swagger, class, and coolness....In the build-up part, with no music, all the moaning, and what not....Then he takes his hat off, screams 'SO ANNIE ARE YOU OKAY!!!'....and then he bursts into flames again! I can't describe that feeling that he builds up! Just incredible!

Don't even start about the T-shirts! During one of the Dangerous shows that I DIDN'T have tickets for, me and a friend went up to Wembley just to buy the memorabilia so that it wouldn't get bent or twisted if we bought them at the shows. I bought every Dangerous T-Shirt. They still fit, incredibly!

And I wore this one to work on the day of the memorial. Almost 20 years later, it still fit ;)

Ace. All the T shirts were always too big for me.

Luckily I laid my hands on this beauty recently:

Love love love the t-shirts...omg...

Sam, you should be proud of the fact that you can still fit into clothes you bought 20 years ago. Not that many people can say that! :cheeky:

Wait... actually, I can still fit into clothes from 10 years ago. I haven't gainned one pound... lol...

And do you remember the RICK CRIMINAL remix? ;-)

Indeed; in terms of short films for me:

1. Smooth Criminal
2. Jam (just love it. MJ at his most relaxed, funny, improvised, street)
3. Thriller (you should never underrate it, despite how many times you've seen it)

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Cascio Controversy Thread)

Bumper, great great drawings.

Sorry for interrupting the ongoing discussion! But, I really want to give a shoutout to Bumper. :clapping:

Thanks Love is Magical :)

I'd have to say Smooth Criminal, TDCAU (Brazil version), and Thriller....I agree, should not underrate it...It's genius....I was watching it a couple of months ago, in full regalia, pumping sound, proper mood, and I was crying because I was so damn proud of him!

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Cascio Controversy Thread)

Smooth criminal was so artistic. I thought scream was a great video too, although not a short film. It was just so cool, the set etc. He knew exactly what he was doing with smooth criminal, i'd love to see more behind the scene's footage, and i wish thriller was available in the quality you can now see smooth criminal in with the moonwalker bluray :D

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Cascio Controversy Thread)

My favourite video, at the moment, is the Brazilian version of They Don't Care About Us.

The Olodum drumming at the end (well, throughout the whole thing)....There's that visceral feeling again!

Yeah, it's in my Top 5. Mainly because it's so different. It's less choreographed it's more organic, it's real. He looks brilliant. The best out of any of the HIStory short films.

I love him in jeans and a T shirt. The Olodum drumming is fucking genius.

Only slight gripe is the editing, in 2 places he's obviously singing different words than the sound is playing. But apart from that, it's brilliant.

Apart from the melancholy surrounding the time, I love the HIStory era.

You know me, Alanna, I'm a political animal. So for Michael to make that film, with that director, in that location, to that song... it's like the greatest piece of art in the world to me right there!

Filmed in the square where slaves were once whipped and tortured. 'They Don't Care About Us'? No shit, Michael. DUDE!

Not to mention how he danced in front of the policemen .-)

DUDE! I love that! lol....Very true...I still need to read up more on that stuff you sent me....

That song is a powerhouse! I remember the first time I heard it...I was speechless...At 13 years of age, I didn't understand what everything truly meant, but I felt the power and emotion behind it...

I also love how he incorporated the chanting at the beginning..The kid's chanting...He turned a playground chant into what became TDCAU....GENIUS!
