Michael Jackson Album Sales After Death: An In-Depth Look

MJ sold over 2.3M+ albums within a month period....Is there anyother artist who achieved that feat before?????
And I heard Grath Brooks had more than 3 albums in one year which sold over 1 million. Can anyone confirm this.....I think with Essential MJ will have 3, 1M+ albums this year.

Michael has already got 7 albums already that have sold 1 million copies this year. Thriller, Number Ones, The Essential Michael Jackson, King Of Pop, BAD, Dangerous and Off The Wall have all sold over 1 million this year already.

Globally yes, but in the US Jackson has only had 2 albums so far sell over 1 million copies (Number Ones, Thriller). It will be 3 by late October/early November once Essential crosses over the 1 million mark.

I also imagine that This Is It The Soundtrack will go platinum in the US as well, although it probably won't do so until 2010 so it won't be counted in this years sales. I am predicting the new soundtrack CD will debut at #1, selling between 100,000 and 200,000 copies in the US and 350,000-450,000 sales globally. Once the dust settles I predict This Is It will shift over 1.5 million copies in the US and 4 million globally. It will be MJ's 10th platinum album in the US.

I say This Is It will do more than 200,000 in it's 1st week....I think it might be around 400,000 or even more. It's possible once the film comes out.

*MJ Worldwide Album sales figures from 25th June - 13th Sept;

Week 4 - 2,086,000 # 7 albums top 10
Week 5 - 1,573,000 # 7 albums top 10
Week 6 - 1,280,000 # 7 albums top 10
Week 7 - 1,078,000 # 7 albums top 10
Week 8 - 860,000 # 6 albums top 10
Week 9 - 681,000 # 4 albums top 10

Week 12 - 304,000 # 5 albums top 40

Total 14,152,000 (w/w top 40 albums only)

http://www.mediatraffic.de/albums.htm

When you consider that these figures only total up MJ albums in the top 40 Global Charts (last week he had another 6 just outside the top 40 estimated at another 160,000 sales), and this does not include any sales prior to his death, then I think you can say 15 million is a 'conservative' figure.

Some amazing sales figures for MJ already!

Just wait for 'This is is' to be released!!

GLOBAL ALBUM NUMBERS FOR SEPTEMBER 25TH:

-Michael Jackson only had 3 albums in the top 40 this week as new releases this week, strong releases from last week, and The Beatles collection continued to pound away at his numbers.

-Jackson's highest album was Number Ones at #25, Thriller was at #28, and Essential at #33.

-Top three (3) selling albums this week: Number Ones sold 65,000. Thriller sold 59,000. Essential sold 51,000.

-Total album sales this week were 384,000 down from 456,000 last week.

-Jackson has now sold over 15 million albums globally since his death in countries that count music sales.

- Thriller is approaching 3 million in sales since MJ's death on June 25th. It will reach the mark in two weeks time.

*Also, on a side note The Beatles sold 1.2 million albums globally this week down from 2.7 million last week. Their total sales since the new re-mastered albums were released is now up to 3.9 million but in all reality is probably at 4 million. By years end The Beatles catalogue will sell between 9 and 10 million albums which I have predicted from the beginning.

Thanks for the update smooth_criminal05.

All I gotta say is that the MJ estate is making B-A-N-K!

Looks like the rate of beetles sales will be slowing down faster unless there is a major publicity event, but so far I think the beetles are very impressive but nothing compared to Michael I think he already achieved a milestone and they have to catch-up with him, so far we are comparing MJ’s old albums verses Beetles new (re-release/re-mastered) albums wait until ‘This Is It’ album gets released + movie.

Do you have statistics of who is the best selling artist in 2009 so far?

According to this article Michael was the best seller two months after his death:

http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/26/countrys-reign-continues-on-album-chart/

It’s been three months after his death and I hope we can see an update. If he is now the best seller then he has a great chance to end the year as best selling artist of 2009.

It depends if you mean album or artist. If you mean album, the best selling album in the US right now for 2009 is Number Ones by MJ. It surpassed Swift's Fearless about a month ago. On Oct 27th, Fearless will be re-released with new songs which should allow it to reclaim #1 status in the US unless Number Ones sales surge with This Is It coming out.

If your talking about best selling artist/band, Michael Jackson is already the biggest selling artist of 2009 in the United States and in the world. He has sold over 5.3 million albums in the US from January-September. Globally he has sold 15.8 million albums this year by far the best of 2009. We still have 3 big months left in 2009, Jackson will sell another 1 million in the US and another 3 million globally MINIMUM. I predict that come late December, Jackson will be crowned as the biggest selling musical act of 2009 in most countries around the world, including the US. Globally he will have shifted over 50 million units in 2009 (digital downloads, albums, DVD's, ringtones).

When Michael died he shocked the world… Elvis fans must be very jealous that Michael outshines Elvis in everything and that’s why I think these days they are more aggressive… People compare Michael’s death to world leaders and I don’t think any other artist comes close to this standard. Here is a video on how he conquered the Internet:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuBMqKqDfLA

Its been my biggest life experience I have ever seen and experienced - the media hysteria and the Internet crash!
Michaels death was more than anything before!

Elvis death coverage was strictly focused only on the USA and the UK and it was without huge media hysteria. Its totally incomparable with Michaels. but, Elvis fans would, of course, argue that its not true and that Elvis death shocked the intergalaxy space... :tease:

In fact, nobody has ever "thrilled" the world with his passing like Michaels. (maybe Lady Di, but nobody else..., no politician, even the Popes passing wasnt so impressive...)

I predict that Taylor Swifts album will be the best seller in the US this year!

Michael will be the best seller globally this year, including the sale of This Is Is soundtrack and DVD!

There is a reason why the Beatles are the 2nd biggest selling act this decade and why they are selling so much now.

Most of their original music was on vinyl. And they have A LOT of fans.

So with their music finally getting on CD for the first time, people are going to want to buy it.

Thats why their #1's album and remasters are selling so well.

Because fans are finally getting it on CD format. Plus the fact that they are not on ITunes either. So when that happens. Expect BIG digital sales as well.

Now if #1's was never released and they remaster their albums now. These albums would sell like hot cakes.

A, you read my mind about this: I was jus' about to ask about their album sales. I had noo idea about any of this. Man, beatles fans must be going wild about this. Not having it on itunes is a great marketing ploy, too.

Thanks:flowers:

btw, if they number two, who's the biggest selling act of the decade?

Eminem is the biggest selling artist in the US for the decade. Once the year ends, Eminem will have sold over 33 million albums, The Beatles are not far behind with expected decade sales of 31-32 million.

eminem. He has over 80 million sold so far.

According to Billboard Eminem has only sold 33 million albums in the US since 2000. Where are you getting this 80 million figure that is simply not true at all. Based on that, Eminem has sold more records then Michael in the US.

Exactly, exactly, exactly! Every word spot on factual.

Well I think 80 million is a worldwide sales figure. Its just the one that I've heard the most.

Since his death Michael Jackson had #1 album for total 113-weeks in 22-countries.
This is without the Belgium Charts.,In Belgium they have two charts. And in there MJ had #1 album for 12-weeks in Wallonia & Flanders.
Also in Japan he had #2 album for 3-consecutive weeks. If there is a chart for foreign artists he would have #1 album there too.
And I'm missing out Argentinian weekly chart numbers....can anyone help me with that.

So his album sales in Europe BEFORE his death were 69.82 million. So its safe to say he sold 70 million ALBUMS in Europe BEFORE his death.

Right now someone who does sales on a chart analysis forum is collecting sales data and will release the final results in January. Because he feels sales surges will remain till the end of the year.

So then we can finally know his sales in Europe then.

I believe MJ will sell over 2 million albums this year in the UK alone. Currently he has sold 1.55 million albums since his death in the UK and with the new release of This Is It Soundtrack, and Halloween/Christmas coming up, plus the This Is It movie, the Jackson catalogue will surge in sales in late October through the end of the year.

In the U.S. Jackson has sold over 5.3 million albums in 2009 and I predict he will sell another 1.2-1.3 million to take his grand total near 6.5 million for the year. To put this in perspective, in 2008 Jackson sold 1.33 million albums in the US while in 2007 he sold only 635,000.

Globally, Jackson has already sold close to 16 million albums this year and I predict he will reach 20 million by years end.

Total unit sales (albums, singles, digital downloads, DVD sales) are on track for over 50 million units sold in 2009

Perhaps the beetles new albums are selling slower than expected (in the US) if these figures on HitsDD continues until the closing date: http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/sales/salescht.cgi

So far Michael is climbing back again with Number Ones at No. 6, I hope he gains more sales till the closing this week.

And back at #2 on billboard catalog albums: http://www.billboard.com/charts/billboard-200#/charts/catalog-albums

Wow. The Beatles sales are not going as good as predicted.

They are dropping in sales.

And MJ continues to sell consistently well.

I've noticed that The Beatles re-releases aren't doing as well as was expected. They sold a lot in the first week but second week they dropped by a huge amount, the vast majority of the albums dropped in sales by more than 50%.
