Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record *Update- Perry Matches MJ's Record*

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

She will probably be number one next week. The only way we can help is to buy the LMFAO song.

I have a question. If a lot of fans bought Smooth Criminal would we be able to make it number one on that chart and would it count towards the record?

I don't think it's possible to make SC be number 1. The radio play is also an important part to get Hot100 No1.

I know, but what I'm asking is if we somehow managed to get it to number 1, would it count towards the record even though it has been 23 years?

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

Has any artist got to #2, stayed there a couple weeks and then dropped without reaching the top spot?

I was wondering the same thing.

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

I would hate to see her be up there with Michael....He's the KING, she's just a pawn in pop music.

No, because Billboard Hot 100 is chart for the CURRENT songs but if a lot of fans bought enough Smooth Criminal copies it'll be charted on Billboard Hot Digital Songs.
In theory song like Smooth Criminal can re-chart Billboard Hot 100 if the record company is promoting the song as re-release, as a current single (pushed to radio) but that will never happen with old MJ songs which were charted before. BTW when MJ died :( he had 6 songs in Top 10 (actually Top 8) on Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart and few of those had enough points to be in Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 chart but that wasn't allowed because all songs were recurrents.

If Sony re-release BAD album with "new" song(s) (something like Thriller 25 album) and one of them is some kind of new version of Smooth Criminal (something like The Girl Is Mine 2008) it can be charted on Hot 100 and if that song reach #1 it will be counted as 6th #1 from BAD.

Of course! For example few MJ songs peaked #2 for few weeks without reaching the top spot: "The Girl Is Mine" by MJ and PM (3 weeks at #2), "Dancing Machine" by J5 (2 weeks at #2), "Rockin' Robin" by MJ (2 weeks at #2), "Mama's Pearl" by J5 (2 weeks at #2), "Never Can Say Goodbye" by J5 (3 weeks at #2) or only for example Usher's "You Make Me Wanna" was 7 weeks at #2 without reaching top spot etc. etc.

Katty is in second place:

She is number one only here (pop songs - not very important):

http://www.billboard.com/#/charts/pop-songs

She is first on radio RIGHT NOW (1. KATY PERRY - Last Friday Night (TGIF): 145,585 (1013 +); 2. LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem: 141051 (+ 0715)), but down to # 4 on iTunes.

I should have known better. Yeah. *facepalm*

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

I don't think it matters one bit. She can have all her songs go No.1 and sell 100 million records but still can't be married to kop. I'm sure everybody knows that.

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

Katy Perry will probably be number one next week. Pornstar Jenna Jameson just tweeted this:

@jennajameson
Jenna Jameson Everybody needs to buy Katy Perrys new single TGIF and request it on the radio, she wants to tie Michael Jackson! She's a sweetheart btw!

She has 285,000 followers.

If the "media journalists" didnt know that why would they lie???

Katy Perry Notches Record Fifth No. 1 From 'Teenage Dream' On Pop Songs

http://www.billboard.com/#/column/c...tches-record-fifth-no-1-from-1005299782.story
by Gary Trust | august 01, 2011 2:05 EDT

Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" becomes the first album in the almost 19-year history of Billboard's Pop Songs chart to generate five No. 1s, as "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" ascends 2-1.

The song follows "California Gurls," featuring Snoop Dogg, the title cut, "Firework" and "E.T.," featuring Kanye West, to the top of the Nielsen BDS-based mainstream top 40 radio airplay ranking.

"Dream" pushes past two albums that each yielded four Pop Songs leaders: Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds" (2006-07) and Lady Gaga's "The Fame" (2009).

Piggybacking one record on top of another, "Friday" sets the mark for most weekly plays in the chart's history (12,468; or, an average of 92 plays per station among the 136 Pop Songs reporters [the chart's entire reporter panel] playing the song). The previous record-holder? Perry's own "E.T." (12,361 the week of May 21, 2011).

Further evidence of the unprecedented domination that "Dream" has demonstrated at pop radio? The five singles from the album account for five of the top six titles with the chart's highest-ever weekly spin totals:

Plays, Title, Artist, Chart Date
12,468, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," Katy Perry, Aug. 13, 2011
12,361, "E.T.," Katy Perry featuring Kanye West, May 21, 2011
12,159, "California Gurls," Katy Perry featuring Snoop Dogg, July 17, 2010
12,107, "Give Me Everything," Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer, July 23, 2011
11,857, "Firework," Katy Perry, Jan. 22, 2011
11,841, "Teenage Dream," Katy Perry, Oct, 16, 2010

While "Friday" is the fifth Pop Songs No. 1 from "Dream," it's Perry's seventh topper on the list overall. She scored two No. 1s from her prior album, "One of the Boys": "Hot N Cold" (2008) and "Waking Up in Vegas" (2009). She ties Lady Gaga and P!nk for second-most No. 1s in the chart's archives, one away from Rihanna's record eight leaders.

Perry additionally ties Gaga for most consecutive No. 1s (six) for a lead artist in the Pop Songs chart's history. In between "Vegas" and "California," Perry peaked at No. 25 as a featured artist on two songs: 3OH!3's "Starstrukk" (2009) and Timbaland's "If We Ever Meet Again" (2010). (Lady Gaga sent her first six singles, beginning with "Just Dance" (2008), to the chart's top spot).

As Perry achieves a first with her quintet of No. 1s from one album on Pop Songs, she's seeking to become just the second artist to earn the honor on the Billboard Hot 100. "California," the title track, "Firework" and "E.T." all reigned on the Hot 100, while "Friday" last week lifted 3-2 (with Airplay Gainer honors).

Should "Friday" reach the Hot 100 summit, "Dream" would join Michael Jackson's "Bad" as the only albums in the Hot 100's 53-year history to produce five No. 1s apiece.

We'll see if Perry can add to her already historic week Wednesday (Aug. 3), when highlights of this week's Hot 100 will be released.

All charts, including Pop Songs and the Hot 100, will be refreshed Thursday (Aug. 4) on Billboard.com.

WHAT? I can not believe I read that. If a journalist who writes about music do not know something so simple, gloogle it or change of profession. In fact, you can google too.

PS: Of course, billboard is right.

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

I checked billboard.com as all should if confused & she is only tied to MJ on the pop charts! But, not for the hot 100! Which is more important. She is only #2 there.

thanks for the info blue.

anyway, i think it will only be a tie if she wrote at least half her songs by herself :burstbubble

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

I hate it when the media compares these flash in the pan artists with Michael. When these artists have been successful in the music industry as long as Michael, then they can make comparisons. For her to be placed up there with Michael, I can't understand it.

I have nothing against Katy Perry, I like some of her songs.........they're catchy, and I even bought tickets to her concert in Septemper just out of curiosity............I want to know what all this fuzz is about.

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

I really don't understand why some MJ fans obsess about things like this. Everybody knows Katy Perry is no match to Michael Jackson, no matter if he achieves this record or not. So what? Let's talk about her in 5-10 years and if anybody will remember her at the time.

Well exactly....Even IF she beats Mike's record, who will remember the songs, even the NAMES of the songs in years and years to come? Likely not many....But people all over the world in every remote corner do and will remember Bad, TWYMMF, MITM, IJCSLY, Smooth Criminal etc.....These are all masterpieces with timeless melodies and Michael's unique voice and performances to go along with it...Katy Perry is not that memorable and I doubt she ever will be...

Anyone can beat a record, but Michael Jackson is a legend.. that's all that matters..

And Smooth Criminal wasn't even Nr 1. Yet it's a classic like none of Katy Perry's songs will ever be.

hahaha...exactly...I realized that as I typed it, but that's the thing with Michael - even his songs that didn't reach number one became classic...Not many artists can do that....

Well said Arky... :clapping:

Records are created to be broken. If Katy Perry ties Michael's record, it's okay. I congratulate her.

What truly matters is not the number of record by Michael. Michael Jackson is a legend - a legend that revolunized the music industry and touched million's hearts.
