Xscape General Discussion

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Ugh. Can we talk about Xscape in this thread please? It's getting tedious...
I'd like to but unfortunately there's no news, so ...

... may I ask a question?

Q: The deluxe edition is mainly for the fans, right?

I can't take it anymore! I want some snippets :D

Ask Bumper, he's dedicated his whole life to them.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Those masters were Michael's masters too regardless of who's recording equipment that was, hence a collaborative effort. So if a collaboration happens between two artists the other artists has ownership over the songs because they were recorded in his studio? So if it was recorded at westlake studios does westlake own the masters of the song? A Join Venture means just that, a Joint venture, co-ownership, it's as simple as that. Maybe Michael should have mentioned it to him before he took the masters but do we even know if that's the way it went down? I don't buy the whole "stole" them talk, they were his songs too he didn't steal anything. To imply the word "steal" means someone did something illegal, and if Mike did just that then Anka could/should have sued him, which never happened in Mikes lifetime.

No, the Westlake scenario is not the same, because, as far as I'm aware, Quincy/Michael/Epic Records paid for the equipment that was used, so they owned the master recordings, as they were recorded on material they themselves had paid for. If Michael recorded at Westlake as a favor from the latter party and paid for nothing, that would be a different story. I highly doubt Michael paid anything at Paul's studio so, therefore, Paul legally had the right to the masters. Of course Michael should have had his own copy, but he really should have asked permission before taking them.

I have no reason not to believe Paul, honestly. The only negative thing he's said about Michael throughout the entire ordeal was that he took the masters without permission; everything else was majorly positive. Moreover, Paul did say he threatened legal action, but decided against it after Michael sent the tapes back.

we don't know what kind of agreement/contract both had

Exactly. Yet some fans keep claiming that Anka and the estate have an agreement that his songs would be released... seriously?

Michael finished I Have This Dream. Raymone Bain told me face to face. He just can't release it for various reasons. One may be related to the Arab prince.

By finished, do you mean finished vocally or finished mix wise? I haven't heard anything regarding that from anyone. Moreover, it's to my understanding that none of Michael's songs recorded in Bahrain will be released in the immediate future because of Sheik Abdullah's views.

I don't think that it was such a big deal back then. It's been hyped (after MJs death) by certain media.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

I think having multiple release dates for the album in different countries is stupid. To combat against leaking the album online, Sony should have 1 universal release date for the whole world to protect against this. Tuesday the 13th should be the 1 and ONLY release date. Make everyone wait.

The release dates in each country have nothing to do with Sony. Each country varies on what day they release. Each Country has a certain DAY that they usually release albums. That is why the difference in release dates. It has nothing to do with Epic or Sony .

Uk is Mon (may 12th)
USA is Tue (may 13th)
other countries are Thurs or Fri ( may 8th or 9th

The next XSCAPE audition will take place in São Paulo, Brazil!

Is there another explanation for Anka's collaborations with Michael completed decades ago seemingly taking precedent over far better completed works by Michael?

I will accept serendipity for TII but LNFSG? Even with the difficulty of not having multitracks - which surely are available for CGYWOOM and IAAL- Estate/Sony still soldiered on because LNFSG is just that grand or they will finally finalize whatever debt they feel they owe Anka?

Agreed. Sony is being lazy.

Is there any excuse for Much Too Soon suddenly showing up on the Michael album? After all, it was recorded in 1994 and dropped almost immediately, and never showed up on any of Michael's future notes. And while it is a nice song, there are much better ballads available.

John McClain loves Love Never Felt So Good and worked on it back in 2010 for Michael. He pushed for its release. Not because of some sort of personal debt to Anka, not because of any ridiculous settlement made back in October 2009, but rather because of the fact that McClain just likes the song. Is it really that hard to believe that people like it? I'm not head over heels for it but it's a nice tune, sweet melody, great vocals in the hook. We rarely hear this calm, free spirited Michael anymore, and to be honest, it's a nice change of pace.

Agreed. Sony is being lazy.

Records are never released on the same day worldwide. It doesn't happen with the most popular of artists. Why? Who knows. But you can't call Sony lazy for following normal procedures with an album release.

They didn't say they were invited - They said: Its possible on the week of release there may be something similar for the fans.
We had access to information that Sony Music Brazil and Sony Mobile BR will perform tomorrow an audition of the album at noon for journalists of large vehicles in Sao Paulo. The location and schedule could not be disclosed.

Contact the label representative said it plans to do something similar with fans on week of release.

We wait for further information and we will keep our visitors informed

I appreciate Mclain appreciating Michael's genuine vocals however, I do find it a bit interesting both of Anka's songs were being used while other producers still wait. The absence of multitracks on LNFSG when other songs were available to easily contemporize using multitracks is interesting. Michael's youthful vocals on LNFSG compared to other songs on Xscape is interesting as well. There are no more Anka-Jackson collaborations I am aware of so, fortunately or unfortunately - depending on how one views this - Estate/Sony can move on to other songs awaiting release. Any perceived debt should be considered paid in full.

Katy Perry and Lady Gaga had cds released on the same day, worldwide respectively so it does happen. It would have been an honor for the KOP if Sony was not being lazy.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Sony isn't Lazy? and I don't even see how it would be lazy? It would be lazy to just slap on date on it, but for 3-4 different dates you gotta put in some effort.

Found a bunch of advertisements for the album on the corner of one of the busiest streets in Auckland :D

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

That's not what was said. Anka said that when Michael and him recorded the songs together, Michael took the master tapes from the studio. Considering that they were recorded in Anka's home studio, and Anka (I'm presuming) pays for the recording equipment and tapes and whatnot, Michael should have asked before he walked out with them. So Anka has every right to say what he said.

The thing is people are not upset because Anka got his money but that he had several different nasty statements when this happened including a claim that Michael had his people break in and take the recording. I am not sure if you were in the forum at the time and followed all the drama as it unfolded. All Anka had to do was go to the estate and show his documentation and get the royalties he deserved. Now you claim something about Michael's behavior in the studio that gives off a negative connotation.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

does anyone know if there will be any album launch partys in the u.k?

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

I will not be listening to the airing on the awards show! I haven't listened to the leaks in about 3-4 weeks and I will stand by that.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

To those complaining about the fact that the album will probably leak a couple of days before all countries get it, I have one thing to say.

Don't listen to the leak and take the fact that it leaked as a sign that the album release is getting closer!

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

I don't understand why you would want to miss an official premier of a song which will most likely have a video or performance.? and a great audience reaction. Its not a leak. Its a premier :) the first showing.

lol, I imagine Zakk back in time. MJ coming to his town for a concert and Zakk saying: "I won't go to that concert. I don't want to know anything about it. I'll go to another concert, to another city, to another country." :D

I so agree with you :agree:
I have never heard other MJ's collaborators accusing MJ stealing songs (other than somebody accused MJ stealing his herpes cure, but thats whole other thing). Will I Am said, he kept music and MJ kept his own vocals, and he also said this:
He was very protective and kept it under lock and key," the Black Eyed Peas' member explained further. "After we made it I had to hand back every demo. He was a perfectionist and didn't want anyone to hear it until it was ready."

We have only Paul's side of the story, and I for one don't think it was appropriate from Paul to go on media telling MJ stole the music. End off.

I’ve just noticed that on Amazon pages the cover of CD Deluxe edition is updated… Now it is just as standard cover but golden, there’s no longer hair...

Why is it that whenever someone says something about Michael some are so quick to accept it as the truth even when it was proven again and again that people almost always have their own agendas to claim certain things about Michael? Anka also proved to be a prick in his book and made totally unnecessary remarks about Michael and other artists as well. But of course he himself is portrayed in great light while he trashes other artists (not only Michael). To be honest Anka comes across as a jerk so full of himself and I would take anything he says about Michael with a pinch of salt.

That however does not influence my attitude towards LNFSG. I think it's a nice song. I always loved the demo, esp. Michael's singing, so to me it's not hard to imagine that it's on the album simply because there are people who like it and not because of some secret agreement with Anka. Yes, the song should not be on the album just because of some kind of agreement, but fans also should not hate on this song just because it was co-written by Anka who is, yes, a jerk. Quincy Jones was too a jerk to MJ at times, Paul McCartney as well - so will we know not listen to their collaborations with MJ?

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

When I became a fan back in the 80s, I remember I was listening to OTW, THRILLER and BAD albums over and over again. Only 10 songs on OTW, 9 on THRILLER and 10 on BAD. So frustrating to have so few songs to listen to, I thought to myself. I don't even remember how many copies of THRILLER and BAD cassettes I bought, because I was listneing to them so often that the tape got damaged, broken, unlistenable. I went to the music stores every week and bothered :naughty: the shop assistants over and over again with the same question: "Is there going to be a new MJ album soon?" And their answer was always the same "We have it, it's BAD". Grrrrrrrr, BAD, BAD, BAD, although I absolutely loved it (it's my favorite album), I wanted new songs. BADLY! There wasn't internet, and to obtain some leaks was near to impossible. So I wanted anything from MJ. Any sound, any kind of song! I didn't care if it was going to hit the charts or not, I wanted to hear his voice in a song that I had never heard before. I didn't care about the melody. To me it was like drugs. I was completely addicted to MJ's voice and any kind of music he did.

Then suddenly, I had fears. I thought what would happen when he dies? No more songs? It was like cutting the drug supply to an addict. So I hoped that he recorded a huge amount of songs and that one day or another they wiould be released for generations to come. And of course, I wanted to see him perform forever. I never wanted him to die.

Anyway, the first unreleased and less known songs I heard was back in 1992: Someone Put Your Hand Out" (which I didn't find as good as other songs on Dangerous, but I didn't care, I loved it anyway, cuz it was MJ's voice.) Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin', This Is The Man and Get It.
Before that the first unknown song to me that I had heard on the radio was State Of Shock (cuz it wasn't on any of the three albums I was listening to) and of course Leave Me Alone release later which I was crazy about.

It was like fresh air. I was in heaven.

But today, what do I see here in this thread or in the forums in general? A generation of a bunch of spoiled fans that have everything so easily on YOUTUBE and other web sites. Spoiled to the core and unhappy with almost anything related to MJ.

Man, if they released Niteline, Trouble, and any other les radio friendly songs, I wouldn't give a damn about the charts. Just give me some high quality sound with MJ's voice on it.

As far as the hype is concerned, it is possible to re-create it with people dealing appropriately with MJ's vision, imagination and magic. But as long as some people tend to seek profit out of MJ, then don't expect any hype. Without magic there is no hype. People who deal with MJ's legacy should do it

FIRSTLY out of LOVE
SECONDLY tend to create MAGIC

then and ONLY THEN there will be HYPE
and what comes after hype? MONEY. Eventually they should create magic and then think of money, and not the other way round.

Now, all the debates about Anka and other stuff, well who cares, let's have MJ's songs, all of them released!

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

What's being premiered on Thursday? First single or a random song from the album?
