Xscape chart positions. (incl. singles)

I somewhat agree with what you said. Everything now days is media driven, they decide who they want to be a star. Back in the day everything was talent driven which explains The Michael Jackson phenomenon. Black American that broke all boundaries. Loved by all black or white all over the world. Taylor is liked by majorly white 12-30 like you said.

I'm not saying she doesn't have fans among other races or other age groups. Although white female Americans from 12-30 is her largest buying population. I'm saying that she is a symbol of how "real American" should be. White, country... and that's why media likes her. Because people (businessmen and very powerful people in music industry) who control the media wants her to be the best, to be the idol of the whole nation. Something like propaganda, she's perfect, she's most talented, most beautiful...

Michael became most popular in spite of those same people who didn't want him to be on top, for obvious reasons. And that's why they had to bring him down.

Here's another reason for her sales:

Taylor Swift has been refusing to put her new album "1989" on Spotify since its release last week, and now she's also pulled her old albums from the streaming service.

It doesn't appear that any of Swift's songs are currently available on Spotify, and a Spotify spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider that she removed all of her albums from the streaming service.

Artists don't make nearly as much money putting their music on Spotify as they do selling digital albums and songs on services like iTunes.

Earlier this month, Jimmy Buffett asked Spotify CEO Daniel Ek for a raise, saying artists who stream their music on Spotify are "at the end of the pipeline" when it comes to the money Spotify pays labels for permission to stream albums.

Spotify says it pays 70% of its revenue to labels — which will amount to about $1 billion this year — but some artists feel they don't get a big enough cut.

The streaming service revealed last year that it pays artists an average of less than a penny per play.

In an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal earlier this year, Swift wrote that "piracy, file sharing and streaming have shrunk the numbers of paid album sales drastically."

Swift wrote the editorial to advocate for the future of music, noting that she hopes artists "don't underestimate themselves or undervalue their art."

Spotify is working hard to change Swift's mind. Here's a statement that was just posted on their website:

"We love Taylor Swift, and our more than 40 million users love her even more – nearly 16 million of them have played her songs in the last 30 days, and she’s on over 19 million playlists.

We hope she’ll change her mind and join us in building a new music economy that works for everyone. We believe fans should be able to listen to music wherever and whenever they want, and that artists have an absolute right to be paid for their work and protected from piracy. That’s why we pay nearly 70% of our revenue back to the music community.

PS – Taylor, we were both young when we first saw you, but now there’s more than 40 million of us who want you to stay, stay, stay. It’s a love story, baby, just say, Yes."

Swift initially refused to release her 2012 album "Red" on Spotify, but relented several months later.

Spotify is valued at $4 billion and reportedly wants to sell for more than $10 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

This highlights one issue with Spotify's business model — artists have quite a bit of power over the streaming service if they can yank their albums at any time.

This will be MJ's last week in Top 10 best selling albums this year. Taylor sold 1,316,427 copies just in US and probably more than 200,000 in other countries. Shame they didn't promote Xscape more with a 3rd single. But we knew this was coming since she announced her album.. we had a good run in Top 10 though. Bravo MJ!

Top15 until the end of the year is great! A great victory.

Yeah, with all the obstacles (Robson and the other guy, boycotting fans, Karen Faye inviting gullible MJ fans not to buy it...) it will be a great victory. It could have been better with more organized promotion and 3rd single but it could have been worse also (Jennifer Lopez, 50 Cent, Prince, U2...).

Is the chart you just posted for the US? I didn't see Michael on it or Bruno Mars(was checking a few names)
I'm glad to see some people like Streisand, Manilow, Annie Lennox and Aretha F doing pretty well.
At year end they'll post total US sales? I'm really proud that Michael did so well with all these unnecessary obstacles.

I really think Sony didn't take advantage the boost LNFSG and the billboard appearence gave to the album but I admit is quite difficult promoting a deceased artist. Michael can't tour, give interviews, appear on events or make special performances anymore. Anyhow, he didn't need to shove himself down on people's throat when he was alive to make his records successful unlike Taylor Swift.

I see from the list Onir posted, the number for Xscape didn't change from last week.

Virtual Michael could do the trick. Maybe in the future. My head is spinning just by the thought.:rollin:

HDD chart is US for this week - Top 50. I think Billboard will post their yearly end chart for US. Xscape is close to 500,000.

Mediatraffic is worldwide cumulative chart for 2014 - Top 40 - MJ is currently at #10 - Mediatraffic will post yearly end results where they'll also count weeks outside of the Top 40.

Taylor Swift may have sold more than 1 million copies in USA for shocing herself sown people's throat and because for the media she's the America's sweetheart but I best she's not as big and as popular as Michael is all over the world and she also has huge advantage being alive.

One interesting thing about Taylor today was that she yanked all of her albums off Spotify today. Including the new one.
Now I was reading the backstory and it said Spotify pays the artist less than a penny per stream and also pays the publisher and label less than a penny.
Oddly though on the news tonight they interviewed Spotify and Billboard and they said nothing about the rate. They both speculated it was to raise her record sales and increase the value of her label supposedly for sale.
Don't know which side is true but that would increase sales dramatically.

well I'm glad she didn't break Britney's record. I'm sure her label would've used it as further promo.

Though there's still Billboard, wouldn't surprise me if they help her a little just to break that record. We know they do that.

Anyway, MJ finishing top 15 is still amazing as many big names won't even make the chart. Though Sony seriously need to think of some promo around the Holidays, would be stupid to miss an opportunity for some more sales.

I agree with Spotify and Billboard that it's to increase her sales. Whether you are or are not available on free streaming services does affect sales. For example one of the other current big sellers, Beyonce's latest album is not available on Spotify in full either - only four songs. On the other hand Coldplay's latest album is on Spotify in full and it still sold well. So it happens that someone is on Spotify and still sells well, but generally IMO artists who do not want their albums on Spotify try to increase their record sales this way. BTW, the Beatles aren't on Spotify either.

I'm glad Michael is on Spotify because IMO that is the future of listening to music and artists who still cling on the traditional ways of selling their music come across as a bit greedy and/or wary of letting go of old, outdated mechanisms of selling music IMO. I tend to listen to music on Spotify the most by now. Artists and labels have to accept by now that the days of traditional record selling are over or at least numbered and they will have to accept the development of technology and what it means in the consumption of music. They will have to make their money in different ways now. Yes, someone like Taylor Swift with massive promotion and while withdrawing her albums from Spotify can still reach somewhat respectable sales numbers, but even that is nowhere near to the hey day of selling vinyls and CDs. Traditional ways of selling music continue to decline and struggle.

I'm also glad Michael's account is among the most popular ones on Spotify - especially among artists who are his peers. There are of course current artists with more followers, but Michael is doing well too. I hope more MJ fans will join Spotify and follow his account.

Oh, and let's not forget.

Billboard Hot 100: #35(re) Thriller, @michaeljackson.

Michael Jackson's “Thriller” re-enters the chart at 35, due to its annual Halloween resurgence. The song sold 39K digital copies in the week ending Nov. 2, bringing its total to 3,689,000. Jackson was a shrewd career strategist, but I doubt even he knew he was creating a Halloween perennial when he cut this song in 1982.

Thriller has been on the Billboard 200 almost all year. Amazing from a 32-year-old album.

Yeah, but it was Xscape who increased the sales of all other albums, including Thriller. Xscape was a hit album, but what is also important (especially for Epic Records) is that it reminded people of MJ so they went out and bought or downloaded his back catalogue, especially Thriller, Number Ones and Essential.

There is Ariana Grande... and other teenage idols. The main difference between all of them and Taylor is that she's white American. She's not mixed races or anything, she's a symbol of white country America. She's like female Elvis and she'll always be that. With talent or not, she'll always be most talented, with good looks or not, she'll always be most beautiful, with good album or not, she'll always sell more than a million in first week. It's American reality.

Please don't bring race into this. America has been accepting of artists of all races for a long time now. Taylor Swift's success is due to her talent and various other reasons. She deserves it.

You are naive if you think there is no racism in America and that does not affect certain relations in show business. Still.

Race is a high he issue in music industry still.. If u think one second the US does not brain wash people to think higher of Elvis and The Beatles that's simply being blinded.. From PR to segregating artists success happens a lot.. This isn't the thread to go fully into it, this is an xscape chart thread and we haven't mentioned the album much lately lol! So I'll just stop here

You must have buried your head deep into the sand. What do you think the 2005 trial against the most famous black artist on the planet was all about? Just because it isn't obvious, doesn't mean that racism isn't widespread in America.

I kinda see your point. I can't click on any news aggregate without reading no less than five stories about Beyonce.
But, racism is very alive and well here in America-anybody who woke up the day after Pres. Obama got elected can see that. It disgusts me.

But back to Xscape-STTR should be pushed to the radio stations!!!!!!!!!!!! Bring those numbers up!

barbee0715 - Agreed!! - Release a new single immediately!!!

Xscape is dying without promotion - we need a new single desperately!!

Chicago, Xscape or STTR !! - Or just release all three of them - one every 14 days!! - then all 3 will be released before christmas - GREAT PR !!

Michael Jackson: Following Halloween, the late King of Pop's classic "Thriller" scares up a re-entry at No. 35 on the Hot 100. The song returns to its old haunt powered by its No. 14 return to Streaming Songs with a 129 percent surge to 4.3 million U.S. streams. It also re-enters Digital Songs at No. 29 with 39,000 downloads sold (up 177 percent), according to Nielsen SoundScan. The title cut to Jackson's landmark 1982 album originally reached No. 4 on the Hot 100 in March 1984.

Aria reports: "also climbing back into the Top 50 are “Essential Michael Jackson” (81 to 47)"

APWNN was perfect to make an animated video but they were lazy and opted for another collage again. It seems the promotion is over and yes, Xscape is dying.

Oct. 6- Oct. 12 Xscape #47 in the Top100Mx.

If it reached #35 without any promo, can we make some effort next year around halloween (fan actions, twitter, facebook, youtube promotion).. buying & gifting the song, requesting it on the radio and streaming it over and over for full week.. and try to give MJ another #1 Billboard hit? This year we did nothing and song reached #35. This is our best chance to give MJ what he deserves. Also if Estate release Thriller 3D next year around Halloween, we'll had a perfect opportunity.
