Xscape chart positions. (incl. singles)

Oh yeah your'e right. I felt the criticism came a bit late (later than I expected), at first the whole deal was hyped by the media, it was the people who stirred the criticism. At least where I live the media was very supportive of this move and they only started to voice the bad comments when all the apologizing started and when Apple finally built that removal tool.

BTW Itunes didn't call it a best seller, it seems to me they tried to make up a record so they could break it, as most "owned" album, which is clearly a bullshit. But I do wonder what would have happened if people weren't that vocal.

I think they started getting more criticism when other singer-songwriters went to media and told what they thought of the this stunt. Both Iggy and Ed makes sense

"I think you should offer things out for free when it feels right but if you don't put value on your music, no one else is."

I have most of U2 albums, but this album feels like it is not worth of getting because they themselves don't value it much. I feel iffy about the whole thing.

Bono and his band valued it all right. They weren't the ones who gave the album away for free, apple did. U2 got $100m from apple for their music, which they wouldn't have had the remotest hope of ever getting through sales - it was a fantastic deal for them, even if it did offer further proof bono is a meglamaniac. So i really take with a pinch of salt these other artists who are sniping - would they have turned down this offer? I've no idea if it was a great deal for apple.

It was a win win for U2, only people who look it up know that U2 didn't give away the album and that Apple did. Plus they got a sweet deal for an album. Too sweet, nobody makes such amount of money from albums. I wonder what's the catch though. Apple must know it doesn't worth the money. So maybe some people are right, and it's all about showing off their power, but I would expect another explanation from Apple to what's their benefit in the whole story... Simpler. For instance, Xperia-Xscape deal included a campaign and it's both Sony, so it's not a waste of money. Interesting.

Here's the press release - It seems like they changed it because I can't find the one with "the most owned album" even though google if full of results with this quotes on forum boards. The exact wording was: "Never before have so many people owned one album, let alone on the day of its release" (it's still on google but the article was removed from Apple website)

"making it the largest album release ever with over half a billion copies distributed. The album features..."

“U2 has been an important part of Apple’s history in music and we’re thrilled to make ‘Songs of Innocence’ the largest album release ever,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “We get to share our love of music today by gifting this great new album to over half a billion iTunes customers around the world.”

Smooth... Really. **** NME for making it more than it really is. This is respectful to people who actually work hard on promotion, ironically these singers are called commercialized, cheap "pop stars". I'm glad MJ is not part of this drama... except the fact they try to overshadow him... but you can't overshadow the sun of music history:D.

I don't think your both being paranoid. I think they'd love to be able to say something topped Thriller (Good luck with that). Same reason why "Prince of Pop" comes up in some articles. Just an attempt to downgrade him in people's minds.

:sleep:Exactly.

I tweeted to MJonlineteam and Epic Records about a 3rd and maybe 4th single... I think if more people would tweet that they will listen

Of course they listen. I tweet to them almost every day. Especially Epic, LA Reid and Timbaland.

MJOnline Team is not very active on twitter anymore. Maybe someone with direct contact with them can ask what are their plans for the 3rd single and when can we expect it. That would be awesome and very useful, because right now we know nothing. And the promotion almost disappeared.

Can anyone post newest Top 20 best selling albums of 2014. I don't know where to find that list. I know MJ is at #10 but I would like to see all updates. Thanks.

Thanks a bunch Koopa! Almost 1.5 million copies for Xscape and it's head to head with Katy "cheater" Perry.

No one will surpass the overrated Frozen, it seems. :( And don't get the fuss over Ed Sheeran, he's boring.

^^Thank you very much. Please post this weekly.

Only album from Top 20 (behind Xscape) that is still in the Top 40 is 5 Seconds of Summer, but I doubt they can overtake 10th position.

But I think Barbra Streisand will very soon come very close if she continue to sell this amount of copies each week.

Also next week new Taylor Swift album is out and that will sell (unfortunately and don't know why and to who) at least 1 MIL in the first week and more than Xscape by the end of the year.

I think Ed Sheeran is really good and deserves to be up there. Agree about Frozen and Katy Perry - both hugely overrated.

I think a lot more albums will come out around Christmas so I think Xscape will be pushed further down, but I hope it will remain in the Top 20. Top 10 is irrealistic.

It will be in Top 15 for sure.

But with another wave of promotion and decent 3rd single Top 10 is not that unrealistic.

There are Taylor Swift, Eminem & Nicki Minaj (and possibly Pink Floyd) who can sell more than 1,5 MIL in 2 months or less. I don't see anyone else releasing an album this year that can do such thing.

I agree that top 10 is unrealistic, unless a potential third single could shake things up. Top 15 is very possible, but I prefer to lower my expectations, so I don't set myself up for disappointment.

A bit off topic but it puts things into a perspective:

2014 is first year ever with ZERO platinum-certified records

While there were certainly a number of great albums you need to have from this year, 2014 will mark the first year since its inception in 1976 that no artist’s album will be certified as platinum from sales. The award is given by the RIAA to mark one million units sold, and with only a few weeks remaining in the year, no album is even remotely close to making the threshold.
The two records nearest the magic number are Beyonce’s self-titled album and Lorde’s “Pure Heroine,” but neither have even crossed the 800,000 mark, with sales of both having tapered off months ago. There is one caveat, and that is the fact that the soundtrack to the animated film Frozen has moved well over three million units; but it being a soundtrack and not a single-artist release places it into a slightly different category.
Yet the year is not a complete wash, as 60 individual songs have been certified as platinum, and this is a clear reflection of the overall shift that the industry has made back to a singles-based focus. Thanks to digital downloads, buyers are no longer required to purchase an entire album, but when compared to last year, the number of platinum-certified singles is still down more than 20%.
The remainder of 2014 is rather bleak in terms of world-wide artists that could move massive units in a short time, as the only possible shot will come from Foo Fighters’ “Sonic Highways;” but it’s been nearly a decade since that band achieved such commercial sales success. Given that reality, it’s safe to say that in nearly every aspect, 2014 will mark the most disappointing and dismal year ever in terms of mainstream music sales.
Many will be quick to blame the rise of streaming music services, as a large number of industry executives claim that this discourages the purchase of full albums and even singles to an extent. In fact, this was what many blamed for 2014 marking the lowest album sales since SoundScan tracking began in 1991 just a few weeks ago. When these numbers were released, it was the first solid indication of how uninspiring mainstream releases have been throughout this year, as those two previously mentioned albums that are closest to platinum status were both released in 2013.
As the traditional music model changes more and more, the industry must get out of the mud and admit they have to make massive adjustments in their sales approach if they wish to survive. With the reality that songs can get millions of streams and video views, yet only sell tens of thousands of copies, the old model is no longer relevant, and when the big labels collapse, they’ll only have their arrogance and ignorance to blame.

No, WTF? I'm sure they won't sell 1 MIL copies in US in 2 months! But I'm sure Taylor Swift & Eminem will, Maybe Nicki Minaj also.

Eminem went platinum last year. This year he's releasing a compilation album from Shady Records. That'll be a hope tbh, as it's not promoted as a solo project.

Oh, thanks. Just looked it up and it really is a compilation album. I thought it is new studio album. That is good, because I don't see it selling over 1,5 MIL worldwide.

Worlwide, maybe. It's a double disc. It will be counted twice. Just as HIStory. But it won't be big. The last compilation album they did (The Re-Up) sold 300k in it's first week, and that was 2006, not 2014...

It won't be counted twice on Mediatraffic. HIStory isn't counted twice there either (on all time chart).

There's no music industry thanks to piracy, sells get lower every time. I thought Michael would sell at least a million in USA but then I remembered thanks the mofo media, he's a pariah.
