The word came from England and sounded there as Vauxhall (Vauxhall) and meant "the hall of a lady named Jane Vaux" - an entertainment establishment of this person, located in one of the suburbs of London. Later in Russia, such establishments began to be called "voksal", and then "vokzal".
...
The most popular place of gardening and recreation of St. Petersburgers in the second third of the XIX century was Pavlovsk. This was facilitated by the construction of the first Russian railroad from St. Petersburg first to Tsarskoye Selo, and then to Pavlovsk. The builder of the railroad Franz von Gerstner, counting on the attraction of passengers, ordered architect Shtakenshneider to build at Pavlovsk station a luxurious music hall with a restaurant and station, which opened, as well as the road, in May 1838. Balls and concerts in Pavlovsk station attracted a large number of citizens.
The vokzal is a building at the station.
It is also used in the name of large stations. For example, Moskovsky vokzal.

There is also a station (stanciya), which is just a point of departure and embarkation of passengers.

Curious about this architect, Shtakenschneider.

Very interesting account. Thank you! 🙏

English “rallare” (as we call them in Sweden; don’t know the English name for it. “Railway workers” seems a tad bit mundane, doesn’t it?)
