Re: DVD windows debate: Sony had planned pre-christmas "This is It" DVD launch

It's reasoning like the one above from the Theater owns that will eventually lead to more piracy. I can understand the impact of moving DVD releases closer to the actual theatrical release of a movie, for instance more job loss because the theaters will be loosing more money. In my opinion, they are only prolonging the inevitable. After watching TII @ the movies on Saturday, I should have been able to walk out of the theater room and brought the TII DVD at the concession stand.

After watching TII @ the movies on Saturday, I should have been able to walk out of the theater room and brought the TII DVD at the concession stand.

But if you could do that then most people wouldn't even bother going to see it at the cinema and would just get the DVD.

Since the run at the cinema has been extended by 2 weeks in November in US. I think the release will be in the new year.

It'll be out at either Easter or Christmas 2011. Sony would never release it at any other times!

After back and forth stuff in the news, it now looks like early 2010 is a certainty. Especially with the move being extended in theaters.

Re: Important info about TII DVD, agree?

Sony release this DVD'n to test the market. Sony holds the rights to all concerts Jackson has in the past (Victory Tour, Bad Tour, Dangerous Tour and History Tour) Now it's a golden opportunity for the dropping performances from these tours out on DVD, but first market tested.

I am sure there is a huge demand to see Michael live, they saw him rehearsing they must be looking forward to see him live and I am thinking that someone in the right mind at Sony/MJ’s Estate will defiantly make that decision.

I would rather have a two week run in cinemas & have the film released before christmas, than having it out in cinemas for a long time like normal films then having to wait 3 months! I wish they would make up their mind. I think its likely it will be released early next year now, but i dont think they've extended the cinema screenings any longer in the UK, so how is that fair? It should be put to DVD earlier because of the only two week run.

The "This is it" DVD and Blue ray !?

Can somebody plz explain to me what is the difference between DVD and blue ray? Will it contain 3D (Thriller 3D , Smooth Criminal 3D etc.)?

I heard Kenny Ortega saying there will be 2-3 hours extra material on the DVD or blue ray ?

NO!

The Blu-Ray version will have more extra material. - At least that's what have previously been posted in here.

Re: The "This is it" DVD and Blue ray !?

Blu Ray is HD and has a much much larger capacity.

Re: The "This is it" DVD and Blue ray !?

will this is it be in 3D on blu ray ???

Im guessing there is a chance that the Thriller and Smooth Criminal scenes will be in 3D :) Not to sure though.

Re: The "This is it" DVD and Blue ray !?

jsut wait and we'll find out.

Re: The "This is it" DVD and Blue ray !?

blu ray would just be able to fit more on less discs, we have not heard if there will be a difference in features.

Re: Official Pre-Orders Have Begun

Re: Official Pre-Orders Have Begun

I wonder if the 2 disc DVD will have more that the Bluray? I want the Bluray but if the dvd has more stuff, i can order both.

Re: The "This is it" DVD and Blue ray !?

I am sure there will be lots of new footage on the DVD, like some of the footage in the trailer that was not in the film itself.
and there will be more on the blue-ray but I am not gonna buy a blueray player just for the extras on that.
I am hoping for a proper DVD release.

Re: The "This is it" DVD and Blue ray !?

Just buy a ps3 if you need a blu-ray player.

If you have a normal sized tv then the dvd will do just fine.
If you have a big screen full-hd tv, blu-ray is a must.

Re: The "This is it" DVD and Blue ray !?

Blu-ray is AWESOME!!

It's great. Better sound, better picture. Everything is better.

Re: The "This is it" DVD and Blue ray !?

You know it is possible that there might be a digital version of the movie included with the blu-ray, so it can be played on standard dvd players as well. I have been seeing that happen more and more with the blu-rays. :) So you wouldn't have to buy a blu-ray player to watch it.

DVD windows debate: Sony had planned pre-christmas "This is It" DVD launch

Forget concession prices or digital cinema, the most contentious issue between Hollywood studios and theater owners is the window of time between a movie’s theatrical release and when a film becomes available on DVD.

The LA Times just reported here that Sony Pictures backed off their plans to unveil This is It before Christmas after the theater chains threatened to pull the Michael Jackson documentary from its screens since it violated the agreed-upon deal that studios would preserve at least three months between a film’s theatrical release and when you can watch it in the comfort of your own home. “We feel that a four-month window is the proper way to do business most of the time,” Sony’s vice-chairman Jeff Blake tells EW.com. “My argument here was this was a limited run and should be treated differently.” The theater chains didn’t agree and rather than risk receiving their full support (This Is It bowed on 6,000 screens across the country) Sony opted to postpone the DVD release til first quarter 2010.

It’s not a new story that theater owners are terrified about preserving their market share from competing technologies. But in a day where you can watch your favorite TV show on Hulu a day after it bows on the network, how would your movie going habits change if you knew a movie that opens in theaters would be available on DVD in a mere 45 days? Would you avoid going to the movies altogether? Or if it’s a movie you really want to see, would the DVD release alter your race to the theater at all?

Good old corporations, with their backwards logic. Here's a hint: think about the consumer and their wants and grow with the times, and maybe then you'll be able to line your pockets AND come out with products people want.

People don't go to movies because they'll have to wait for a DVD, they go to a movie because they want to go to the movie. They want to eat popcorn and see it on a big screen. The DVD coming out before Christmas wouldn't prevent that. Hell, look at how many of us thought this film would be on disc before Christmas and still saw the film anyways.
