Official: The Jackson UNITY TOUR

There was no avoiding thoughts of Michael Jackson when the Jacksons — his four older brothers, Jermaine, Marlon, Tito and Jackie — brought their Unity Tour to the Apollo Theater on Thursday night. Just over three years after Michael Jackson’s death, it was a show that treaded carefully between respect and exploitation.

A fan wore a hat similar to Michael Jackson's signature fedora.
Michael’s image on a video screen brought some of the concert’s biggest cheers, and Jermaine’s performance of “Gone Too Soon,” a song from Michael Jackson’s 1991 “Dangerous” album that has become his own eulogy, was a tender, tearful supplication.

Yet the Jacksons were more troupers than mourners. They took over what had been Michael’s lead vocals, borrowed some of his solo songs, picked up his angular moves and pushed the concert to be the kind of dance party celebrated in many of their hits, from “Blame It on the Boogie” to “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground).”

Now the brothers who had been so thoroughly overshadowed could emerge on their own. Marlon was dancer and host, taking credit for pulling together the Jacksons’ reunion. Jermaine was a smooth soul man, Tito a down-to-earth guitarist, Jackie the utility harmony singer.

The Jacksons’ Apollo booking — they’re playing bigger places elsewhere on the tour — was a nod to their history. Winning on an amateur night at the Apollo in 1967, when Michael was 9, and the group was called the Jackson 5, was an early milestone for them.

Marlon Jackson reminisced onstage about standing in the wings with Michael at the Apollo, absorbing the lessons of James Brown and Jackie Wilson performing nearby.

If Michael had not gone on to such a monumental solo career, the Jackson 5 — renamed the Jacksons in 1976, with Jermaine replaced by their younger brother, Randy Jackson — would still have been a prototypical boy band. That’s why they have been so closely studied by acts from New Edition to One Direction.

They were wholesome, finely harmonized and thoroughly choreographed from the beginning, when the Motown hit factory groomed them and provided songs. (Unfortunately, at the concert their early Jackson 5 hits, like “ABC” and “I Want You Back” — some of their best material, even if it was written by Motown staff rather than the Jacksons themselves — was truncated and rushed through as a medley, with lead vocals from Jackie Jackson that were only adequate.) They then figured out how to grow up together, exchanging the precocious charm of their Jackson 5 hits for seductions, dance songs and idealism as the Jacksons. “Can You Feel It,” which opened the concert, called for universal togetherness, and “Man of War,” Jackie’s best lead vocal onstage, pleaded for pacifism.

At the Apollo, choreography was still paramount for the Jacksons. Vocal precision came and went, possibly because of technical problems, but the Jacksons hit their physical cues. Marlon had the most vigorous moves, dropping to his knees, strutting and twirling (though not quite moonwalking like Michael).

And the Jackson brothers synced with him, with shoulder twitches, hip swings or upraised arms frozen in the air, clutching microphones. They were brothers working together; at times they looked as if they were just moving to the music or playing around, only to align in formation a few beats later.

Jermaine Jackson, who had a successful solo career in the late 1970s and ’80s, sang his own segment of the concert, including his hits “Let’s Get Serious” and the wounded, nicely unspecific “Do What You Do.”

But Michael Jackson hovered over the rest of the performance. Once Michael’s solo career moved into gear, the Jacksons got only the B-level material.

So to pump up the party, the set grabbed songs that Michael Jackson recorded without his brothers, like “Rock With You” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’,” with its irresistible beat and increasingly nutty lyrics; the Jackson brothers pointed fingers at one another to taunt, “You’re a vegetable.”

With or without their brother, they were geared to entertain, and an audience fond of all things Jackson was happy to share the familial groove.

Re: Official: The Jackson Start Their National Reunion Tour in July

I saw it today. It was good but I'm not sure I understood Whoopie when the brothers were asked about forgiving Murray (which Jermaine has trouble doing but not Tito). She said, "to err is human." Murray did more than just make a little mistake. Did she not follow the trial?

She could be forgiveness in the sense of letting go of the past and moving on. Not a forgiveness of the action and crime in question. When victims says they forgive someone, they are not excusing the crime or saying that everything is okay. They are saying that I forgive this person because I want to move on and don't want this person who wronged me to control my life. The journey to forgiveness is a personal journey. Some may reached that point, while other will not.

As for Jermaine, I really can't see him as being anything but full of crap it on this subject. He once said that Murray was just the fall guy and he was being target because he was black. He also said nothing when his parents dropped the resuscitation against Murray and is in full support of the AEG lawsuit which takes almost all of the blame a way from Murray.

Re: Official: The Jackson Start Their National Reunion Tour in July

That's a big lie. The shows were cancelled due to logistics issues.

Cirque du soleil shows have been a phenomenal success so far with sales records consistently at the top of the box office for the past 6 months, even beating the likes of Jay-Z and Kanye West.
I agree with you. The people in Utah hardly had time to buy tickets when they cancelled the shows.

I think she meant that you can't forget what he did or forgive that Michael is gone. But not let any hate or anger of what he did control your life. Something like that. You don't do it for Murray but for yourself. Find some kind of peace for yourself. That's what I got from it. I find that it isn't an easy thing to do because some can do it and others can't.

I'd appreciate it if you didn't call me a liar. It's not really necessary. It is simply my opinion. I know they had logistics issues, particularly with the tree but some shows were cancelled because they didn't sell enough tickets, especially in Vegas. Obviously that wasn't down to logistics because it was in the middle of their month long run. Look at the following article which states how people whose show was cancelled were given the option of moving to the second show, clearly indicating that neither show had been near a sell out.

Even with some shows not full to capacity they still managed to be the no.1 touring show so it's really no big deal. But don't call people a liar. It's not cool.

and please try and be more respectful and mindul in how you reply to each other

Re: Official: The Jackson Start Their National Reunion Tour in July

Hope the brothers carry over the enthusiasm to a new album. I've decided to skip their show in the neighboring city after mine got cancelled.

Re: Official: The Jackson Start Their National Reunion Tour in July

I just saw the Englewood show a short time ago and long story short: I was completely blown away. They had so much energy on stage, as if it were still 1984. They did songs that I would ave never expected to hear live ever (such as Heaven Knows I Love You Girl and Time Waits For No One) in addition to their classics. The only obvious omission was Dancing Machine, and personally, I would have liked to hear Enjoy Yourself, I Am Love, Torture, and 2300 Jackson Street, but what are you gonna do? I also found it a bit weird that the only songs Jermaine used his bass guitar on was the medley of the first 3 #1's, Let's Get Serious, and Shake Your Body. But overall, it was an amazing show and Michael would have been proud.

Re: Official: The Jackson Start Their National Reunion Tour in July

Will the tour be released on DVD/Blu-Ray?

Since there is no way they will come to Denmark I will have to see them on the Tely.

I really hope the Jacksons can step it up a notch, just a smidgen. I mean Michael would sweat sooo much, he'd lose five pounds after each Show, he just oozed on stage and I just don't see the same coming out of all 4 brothers combined. Rest In Peace!

Re: Official: The Jackson Start Their National Reunion Tour in July

I don't think it's fair first of all to compare four people in their 50s and 60s to a man in his late 20s/early 30s. It's definitely not a fair comparison whenever that man is Michael Jackson in his prime!

Please don't expect 4 men in their 50s and 60s to perform at anything close to the level of Michael Jackson in his prime.

Re: Official: The Jackson Start Their National Reunion Tour in July

I noticed Jermaine was out off tune in many songs they sang in Apollo. I don't know if it was because it was Apollo or is it every time?

Re: Official: The Jackson Start Their National Reunion Tour in July

^ Obviously a microphone malfuncion. :D

I thought jerms was looking a little porky in those videos, don't think he's been hitting the gym as much as he should have. I wonder if halima is on the tour with him, noticed a few hot-looking girls in the audience - the jacksons can still pull in the dirty dianas.

Yes, Halima has been on tour with him for the last 4 shows.

If you wanna Generalize that's what my comparison is doing, I wasn't, I was comparing the pizzazz of Michael's Show's. The brother's just don't have the same as Michael.

Even in rehearsals Michael has more pizzazz (at the age of 50 going on 51 years of age) than his brothers combined. Again, Michael poured everything into his Show's. I just don't see the same from Michael's brothers. That's what set Michael apart from his brothers and there will never be another Michael Jackson. Rest In Peace!

I agree. Like I have said many times in this thread, if you are expecting the Unity Tour to be like any other Jacksons tour which featured Michael Jackson singing lead then you are going to be disappointed. There will never be another Michael Jackson, so don't expect Michael's brothers to be as good a singer, dancer or performer as him. Don't expect the Unity Tour to be like a Michael Jackson tour.

Re: Official: The Jackson Start Their National Reunion Tour in July

I think I'll go check them out at The Greek. They may not have the same pizzazz as MJ, but I'm not expecting the same level of pizzazz as MJ. I will enjoy the music, the ambiance and the evening sky. Actually, a couple posts in here of those who've already seen their show encouraged me to go. Thanks, guys. :) I think I'll enjoy myself if I stay open and put my mind to it.

Exactly, I dont know why anyone here would expect this to be an MJ show, this is a Jacksons show and Michael is no longer with us. It's a great way to see the songs performed live by the original band members. I was skeptical when the tour was first announced but the brother's are doing a fantastic job. We can't live in the past so we should be able to enjoy these songs in the present. Im going to the Greek show and couldn't be more excited. Never got a chance to see a Michael show and am really happy for the opportunity to see the Jacksons.

Re: Official: The Jackson Start Their National Reunion Tour in July

The brothers look like they are doing great. I still don't understand why didn't start doing this years ago. They would have developed a good fan base. Oh well, they had their reasons.

AliCat, thank you for the video. I am so grateful we have TII. I love you MJ:heart:

P.S. I bet Tommy Organ always thinks of Michael when he comes out front for WBSS

Re: Official: The Jackson Start Their National Reunion Tour in July

On tv last night they showed Michael's 30 annivesary show from 2001. I was happy and I watched it and saw him with his brothers. It was sad that it was the last time he performed with them. They were good together. It won't be the same now but it seems from what people are saying that they are doing pretty well. I think Michael would be proud of them.

Re: Official: The Jackson Start Their National Reunion Tour in July

^I watched it too and kept thinking the same thing, that this was the last time they would ever perform together. Very sad to realize that. But as usual, Michael lit up the stage, whether solo, with his brothers or with anyone else.

Yeah and when he sang he got the loudest reaction. I know the show was for him but he had the audience in the palm of his hand.

I agree. I feel sad knowing that Michael will never perform with them again. But I'm very proud of the brothers for getting out on stage and giving a good show on their own. I wish them every success.

I would replace (or add) some of the songs from their setlist with: Maybe Tomorrow, Dancing Machine, Enjoy Yourself, Things I Do for You & State of Shock.

Yeap. Also Cirque also cancelled shows in the beginning because they realized it was taking too much time to put back the props on the stage, and not because people were not buying tickets.

Good to see that the brothers got at least one good review for the Apollo show. I thought they said that they were working on an album and would share a song during a tour? Has anyone heard this song?
