Michael Jackson Estate Signs Huge Deal With Cirque du Soleil! Update p20 [Merged]

Re: Michael Jackson Estate signs huge deal with Cirque du Soleil!

Ok, I've deleted some posts from this thread. I don't think it's too much to ask that we don't have conspiracy talk in this thread. Please feel free to discuss estate issues in the conspiracy section, but please not in here. :flowers:

Re: Michael Jackson Estate signs huge deal with Cirque du Soleil!

This is a great idea! I'm glad they did it, and yes, it will be profitable for both. Michael would have been so happy about this. I can't wait to see it, and it's also another reason to go to Vegas! :clapping:

Re: Michael Jackson Estate signs huge deal with Cirque du Soleil!

By ETHAN SMITH And ALEXANDRA BERZON

Adding momentum to the posthumous Michael Jackson business, the late pop singer's estate and Cirque du Soleil on Tuesday announced plans for two shows based around the pop singer's music.
The first of the yet-to-be-named shows is to tour arenas around the world starting in late 2011. That show is going to be designed to emulate in some respects a Michael Jackson concert, blending Jackson-inspired choreography with Cirque du Soleil's trademark acrobatics. The other is to run as a long-term residency at a Las Vegas casino owned by MGM Mirage, starting in 2012. That show is to more akin to a theme-park attraction, possibly featuring elements like motion simulators and 3-D visuals. It's also likely to include a nightclub and restaurant that include a Michael Jackson theme. The casino has not been selected.
Both shows' specifics are still being mapped out. Describing the creative process thus far, Cirque du Soleil President and CEO Daniel Lamarre in an interview said: "We want to immerse ourselves in the Michael Jackson world." For instance, Cirque creative personnel have spent time recently at Mr. Jackson's Neverland Ranch in Southern California.
The productions are to be jointly owned by Cirque du Soleil and the estate of Mr. Jackson, who died last year at age 50, on the eve of a planned series of comeback concerts in London. The rehearsals for those shows were the subject of a successful concert film, "This Is It."
The music in both shows is to include newly edited and mixed versions of Jackson favorites, along the lines of the music for the Beatles-themed Cirque du Soleil show called "Love." The music is to be licensed to the shows by the estate.
MGM Mirage said it and Cirque struck the Jackson deal after Mr. Jackson's long-time lawyer and estate administrator, John Branca, came to Las Vegas and saw existing Cirque du Soleil shows in casinos owned by MGM Mirage.
"Several other folks wanted to get access to the estate and everything that represented Michael," MGM Mirage Chief Marketing Officer Bill Hornbuckle said. "Because of what Cirque did out there we thought we would be able to convince them that the partnership would be in their best interest."
Mr. Hornbuckle said that although details have not yet been worked out, the arena show is likely to start its run in Cirque du Soleil's home base of Montreal and then travel to the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas around Thanksgiving weekend in 2011, running for six to eight weeks there.
The other show is to open in Las Vegas later in 2012. MGM Mirage hasn't yet determined whether one of its other Cirque shows will be uprooted to make room for it, Mr. Hornbuckle said. He said the company is unlikely to build a special new theater for the production, but could still decide to do that.
Cirque du Soleil has had a Las Vegas presence since 1993, when its Mystere show opened at the Treasure Island casino. Today, six Cirque du Soleil shows perform most nights at casinos owned by MGM Mirage. The newest, "Viva Elvis," is built around the music and life story of Elvis Presley. (Treasure Island, where Mystere still runs, was sold by MGM Mirage to a private investor.)
The new shows could lead to more Michael Jackson-branded nightclubs, restaurants and other features outside of Las Vegas—particularly in hotels that MGM Mirage's hospitality unit is planning in the Middle East and Far East.

UPDATE 1-Cirque du Soleil to Create Michael Jackson show

UPDATE 1-Cirque du Soleil to Create Michael Jackson Show

3:12pm EDT
* Cirque and Jackson estate will share projects
* Arena touring show expected in late fall 2011 (Recasts with details on previous Jackson-related projects)

By Alex Dobuzinskis
LOS ANGELES, April 20 (Reuters) - Cirque du Soleil will develop touring shows based on the music of Michael Jackson in the third major deal by the "Thriller" singer's estate since his death last June, representatives said on Tuesday.

The latest deal also calls for a Jackson-themed nightclub in Las Vegas and a permanent Jackson-Cirque du Soleil show that will make its debut in the city in late 2012.

The Jackson estate and Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil, which already has produced shows based on the music of Elvis Presley and The Beatles, will each own half of each project arising from the partnership. They will split development and production costs, representatives for the estate said.

The first project from the partnership will be an arena touring show expected to start in late fall 2011. "Having attended Cirque du Soleil performances with Michael, I know he was a huge fan," John Branca, a co-executor of the estate, said in a statement.

"We are excited to be partners with Cirque du Soleil to give Michael's fans a truly unique way to hear, see and feel Michael's music," Branca said. The MGM Mirage , which owns 10 hotels in Las Vegas, will partner with Cirque du Soleil for the shows in the casino mecca but it has not announced a permanent venue for those performances.

In March, Sony Music, a unit of Sony Corp , announced a $250 million deal with Jackson's estate, which will result in up to 10 albums using the singer's previously unreleased music.

Last fall, Sony Pictures released "This Is It" based on footage of Jackson rehearsing for a comeback concert series in London. The movie made $261 million around the world, according to tracking firm Box Office Mojo.
Cirque du Soleil currently has a show in Las Vegas based on Presley, called "Viva Elvis," and another high-wire acrobatics show titled "Love" using Beatles music.

The singer's mother, Katherine, said in a statement, "Our family is thrilled that Cirque du Soleil will pay tribute to my son in such an important way."

Jackson, 50, died in Los Angeles on June 25 of an overdose of powerful medications. His personal doctor, Conrad Murray, has been charged in California with involuntary manslaughter and is awaiting trial. (Reporting by Alex Dobuzinskis; Editing by Jill Serjeant and Bill Trott)

Re: UPDATE 1-Cirque du Soleil to Create Michael Jackson show

Cirque to Put on Show Based on Michael Jackson

By RYAN NAKASHIMA, AP Business Writer – 2 mins ago

LOS ANGELES – First the Beatles and Elvis, now Michael Jackson.

The acrobatic troupe Cirque du Soleil announced Tuesday that it will put on a live touring show featuring the songs of the King of Pop starting late next year.

That will be followed by a permanent production in Las Vegas in 2012 at a property owned by MGM Mirage Inc. The casino company did not say which venue will host the show. A nightclub in Las Vegas will also open with the show.

Cirque and Jackson's estate will each own 50 percent of the projects and share equally in the cost of putting them on. The estate will also receive royalties from the use of Jackson's music and other assets.

Jackson, who died at age 50 last June after a drug overdose, was described as a "huge fan" of the French Canadian performance group.

He saw their first tent show in Santa Monica, Calif., many years ago with longtime lawyer and now estate co-executor, John Branca. And he visited their Montreal headquarters in 2004, Cirque CEO Daniel Lamarre said.

"He said he was an acrobat himself," Lamarre said in an interview. "As an artist he had this amazing way of bringing some visual element to his performances."
The touring show, which will begin in North America before branching out around the world, will be a simulation of a Jackson concert, while the Las Vegas show will be more theatrical and more technologically advanced, Lamarre said.

"The expectations of Michael Jackson fans around the world are going to be huge," he said. "And we have to deliver."

There are no plans for other members of Jackson's family to perform.

Before Jackson decided on a series of comeback concerts at the O2 arena in London, he was seen several years ago in Las Vegas and considered performing there.
Branca said Jackson would have approved of a Cirque tribute.

"I'm not convinced he would have gone to Las Vegas and performed like Celine Dion did," he said in an interview. "But this is something Michael would be very excited about."

Unreleased Jackson recordings may become part of the shows' musical numbers, and his biggest hits will likely be remixed and mashed up so fans will hear his music in a new way, Branca said.

The other co-executor, John McClain, a Jackson friend and music producer, has discovered more than 60 songs that Jackson recorded but never released. They form the backbone of a seven-year deal with Sony Music Entertainment worth up to $250 million. A new album from the recordings is set for release in November.

Jackson's mother, Katherine, said in a statement, "Our family is thrilled that Cirque du Soleil will pay tribute to my son in such an important way."

Jackson died after overdosing on propofol and other sedatives. He was about to start a series of comeback concerts he called "This Is It." The concert movie based on rehearsal footage went on to gross $252 million worldwide.

His personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter. He is expected to go to trial this summer.

Maybe, the Administrators can combine this thread with the other one.
Thank you.

Re: Michael Jackson Estate signs huge deal with Cirque du Soleil!

I like this deal, sounds great!

Cirque du Soleil has been touring around the world with their shows before, so I wonder why they could not take this show outside the US too? I'd definitely want to see the show!

Re: Michael Jackson Estate signs huge deal with Cirque du Soleil!

Michael must be smiling from heaven while hearing this news, he'd love it so much  Bless you Michael you deserve it so so much :)
Of Course, you are right, and I got the picture to prove it!

Re: Michael Jackson Estate Signs Huge Deal With Cirque du Soleil! ALL THREADS

This is all wonderful! I hope they release it on DVD. I know Cirque du Soleil has a few shows on DVD. Not everyone can afford to fly to Las Vegas to see a show. I'm one of those. *Hopes they put it out on DVD*

I know Michael loved Cirque du Soleil and saw a few of those shows with his kids. As a matter of fact, Blanket, Prince and Paris saw a show a few months after Michael left us.

I agree with you. The estate should ask for fan input.
They could have some kind of contest.

Sure they will do it - Branca told that he would like the fans be proud of what they do for MJ Legacy ? The estate will allow it.

Re: Michael Jackson Estate Signs Huge Deal With Cirque du Soleil! ALL THREADS

Wasn't there a Beatles Cirque du Soleil show? Or did I imagine it? lol

You're right - The name of the show was L.O.V.E. :D - There is also a tribute show for Elvis named "Viva Elvis" -
