But hey... look at this..., that could mean that from the GHs of the Eagles should have sold now ower 33-35 mill. albums....

152e1k5.jpg

The thing is that The Eagles have never had the biggest selling album in the US, it was a plot of record companies to boost the selling of albums....

There has never been anything like Thriller vs. The Eagles.

They have never sold more than 25 mill. copies of their GHs compilation...

Thriller since day one, I mean, when the album reached the status of best selling album, has been the best seller in the US....

There is NO OFFICIAL STATISTICAL PROOF/NO OFFICIAL CHART PERFORMANCES STATISTICS that the Eagles surpassed Thriller!

Please, spread this info on the discussions on the articles on the net...!!!

BTW, Thriller25 has sold over 2 mill. only in the US, so... + the classic Thriller + LP...., RIAA and Epic consciously dont present the facts and reality...

Surely Eagles cannot overtake Thriller....No way.,See how many Eagles' Greatest Hits albums available....There is no way to people to only buy that particular album considering there has been lot of GHs released since 1976. See how it effects to Number Ones when This Is It was released.,even they both contain different materials.
There is no way that Eagles' album could sell that much. And where are the chart data to prove it???? It got boosted suddenly by 10-12 millions from nowhere to 29X. It never appeared YTD albums charts lately. Club sales alone can't sell that much. No Way!

Thriller is the biggest selling album in America (overtaking the Eagles)

http://riaa.com/goldandplatinumdata.php?table=tblTop100

So according to that chart, the Eagles GH went 8x plantinum with only a little less than one million in sales in two years time? Yet, between the time of Bad, HIStory, and Dangerous, Thriller only went 5 x platinum? Wasn't the rule is that it had to ship out 1,000,000 copies in order to get a platinum certification? That doesn't make any sense. Seeing how older copies of albums get bought up when an artist comes out with a new product that it would be impossible. Michael came out with 3 huge albums in that time.

Is it possible that in the time between Bad and Dangerous that everyone who was going to buy the album already bought it so it would account for its lower sales? Or there was a possibility that there was an over shipment?

Seems kinda unlikely, but just throwing that out there.

Thanks to KB50MJ

I have serious question for those who can answer.

It has to do with Thriller v.s. The Eagles.

Thriller sales soar close to Eagles' Hits | Reuters

NEW YORK (Billboard) - For nearly a decade, the Eagles' "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975" has been the recording industry's ultimate evergreen release, certified by the RIAA as the all-time best-selling album in the United States. But thanks to continued robust demand for Michael Jackson's catalog since his June 25 death, "Thriller" appears on the verge of matching "Their Greatest Hits," at least in the eyes of the industry trade group.

In March, the Recording Industry Association of America certified "Thriller" as 28 times platinum, meaning that at least 28 million copies of the album have been shipped since its 1982 release. That's just a notch behind the Eagles' hits compilation, which was released in 1976 and was certified 29 times platinum in 2006.

Billboard estimates that the posthumous surge in Jackson's sales and Sony Music Entertainment's efforts to push Jackson CDs into the distribution pipeline have likely propelled shipments of Jackson product, if not yet sales, beyond the 29 million-unit mark in the United States.

Amid the recent explosion in Jackson sales, "Thriller" has enjoyed the second-biggest sales bump in his catalog, just behind the hits collection "Number Ones." During the three weeks that ended July 12, "Thriller" sold 552,000 U.S. copies, for year-to-date sales of 608,000, according to Nielsen Sound Scan.

STRONG SALES TO CONTINUE
Most industry executives believe that the most recent Sound scan week -- which included the widely watched memorial service for Jackson at the Staples Center in Los Angeles -- will mark a posthumous weekly peak for Jackson sales. They also expect sales to wind down slowly in the next few months, which means sales will remain strong. In the week ended July 12, Jackson's album catalog sold a combined 1.1 million copies, up from nearly 800,000 in the preceding week and 422,000 in the week he died.

"Thriller" and "Their Greatest Hits" were instant hits. The RIAA first certified "Thriller" platinum in January 1983, just two months after its release, while "Their Greatest Hits" was certified platinum in February 1976, mere days after it arrived.

Propelled by groundbreaking videos for the singles "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and the title track, "Thriller" reached the 20 million certification milestone in October 1984, becoming the RIAA's top-selling album of all time. The album's next RIAA certification, at 21 times platinum, came in May 1990. The RIAA's certification of "Thriller" as 28 times platinum in March came 13 months after Sony's release of a deluxe 25th-anniversary edition of the album.

The RIAA's second certification of shipments of the Eagles' "Their Greatest Hits" didn't occur until August 1990, when it certified the release as 12 times platinum. The RIAA couldn't immediately explain why the album wasn't certified at earlier platinum milestones, or why it was next certified at 14 times platinum in December 1993, and for 22 times in June 1995, despite U.S. sales of only 919,000 during that period. When the RIAA certified "Their Greatest Hits" as 26 times platinum in November 1999, it unseated "Thriller" at the top of the RIAA's all-time ranking.

Since being certified as 29 times platinum in January 2006, "Their Greatest Hits" has sold 404,000 copies, including 33,000 this year and 115,000 in 2008.
Representatives at Sony and Warner Music Group, which distributes "Their Greatest Hits," declined to comment.

Yea, I want to get to the bottom of this. How could this be? Somethings defiantly not right.

Rules of RIAA changed through years, as simple as that. When an album jumps from 10xP to 15xP in a year it doesn't mean at all that it sold 5 million copies between both awards.

Greatest Hits 71-75 sold tons of copies on Clubs, millions of them, from 1976 to the 90s. Those sales weren't eligible on RIAA certs until 1994, which is why, once those sales eligible, Greatest Hits 71-75 got from 14xP to 22xP to 29xP.

This album shipped 12 million units to shops up to 1990. It shipped an additional 6 million since that year, meaning 18 in total. It shipped the 11 million remaining copies through BMG Music Club, Columbia House, Military sales and some other Clubs.

So... is it the official confirmation that Thriller was really surpassed by the GHs of the Eagles?

If so... I dont believe that Thriller was not selling so "good" to sell more than 3 mill. copies from October 30, 2000 to date to reach 29 mill. as the GHs compilation...!!!

That could mean that the GHs should have reached 33-35 mill. copies... with such a great sale via BMG Music Club, Columbia House, Military sales and some other Clubs...

And what about selling MJ Thriller all across the USA, especially in 2009 or 2008 when the Thriller25 was released...?
What about the classic LP?

-----EDIT-----

You already did. Lets sit back and see what MJD says.

thats a lie and completely false ^^

1,52 million units ^^
(1987-2002)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_BMG_Music_Club%27s_top_selling_albums_in_the_United_States

its a fact that the RIAA and Sony faked the sales, only to get Thriller from the Number 1 Position.
The fast is that Thriller is THE BEST SELLING ALBUM IN THE UNITED STATES since 1984. Since 26 years!

good to see my statistic i made in the past :)
(i will update is in the future)

Aren't RIAA certifications are from shipments rather than actual sales last I remembered?

Definitely there is something totally wrong!

Look, after MJs victorious victory and clearing all the allegations in 2005, after all the dirty and filthy stories, all of a sudden, the Eagles compilation sale was upgraded in january 2006 to 29 mill. number.

During that period from 2002 to 2006 was sold 1 mill copies...? Hmmm... and after that magic million Thriller was surpassed.... and GHs compilation was named the biggest selling album in the USA, those United States where Michael was overzelously treated as a criminal and where the conspirators were defeated again... and Michael won the battle.

Come on.... these so-called certifications are a total lie...

Do you remember my comments in this thread about the upgrading the numbers for Thriller and GHs, Thriller is now the best seller, and I can bet that soon the GHs of the Eagles will be re-certified and falsely named the best seller..., not let Thriller be the best seller!

This is all curtsy of MJD on UKMix:
But it doesn't have to do with the amount of albums sold. It only has to do with shipments. Certifications are not date specific as far as pre-95 certs are concerned. Those 'certs trajectories' are consequently pointless. Both, Military sales and Club sales were made eligible during the first half of the 90s only, meaning all club sales from their beginning in 1955 to 1994 were completely ignored first and all started to be counted at the same time, explaining easily why huge catalog sellers, like Greatest Hits 71-75, Led Zep IV or AC/DC's BIB jumped by millions at that time.

According to Sony reports Thriller was on 28,4 million copies shipped when it was certified 28xPlatinum, by March 2009. It sold an additional 1,2 million copies during the year, with definitely more copies left on shops by the end of the year than by March, meaning a shipment likely between 29,7m and 29,9m by the end of 2009.

Number of copies shipped in 2010 must be irrelevant - copies selling have mostly been shipped last year. It won't be easy to reach 30 million during 2010, but it is possible, even though 2011 seems a more realistic target.

OK, but The Eagles are not only one group... with Club sales or Military sales...

The same for more relevant groups like Pink Floyd, The Beatles...

The Billboard article say it clear. There is no official confirmation.

MJ'S US SALES THIS WEEK (Wednesday Feb 17th 2010)

-This Is It drops from #11 last week to #22 this week with sales of 27,000.

-Number Ones drops to #44 this week with sales of 17,000... down only slightly from last week.

-MJ sold a total of 86,000 albums down from 95,000 last week in the US.

-MJ has sold 600,000 albums so far in 2010 in the US.

I wonder how a brand new album would sell. It won't have the usual promotion to back it up, but at the same time everyone's been waiting for something new for almost one entire decade. While I am sad inside about the actual quality and how old those recordings might be, I wonder how it will sell.

A new album would debut at #1 in the US as well as Japan, UK, Australia, Canada, and many other countries around the world. I think it would have a chance of selling over 400,000 in it's first week in the US (a new record for MJ). Total US sales would end up being near 3 million with global sales of 10 million which would be amazing in todays music environment.

RIAA Tallies The Decade's Top Gold & Platinum Award Winners

WASHINGTON -- The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) today released a tally of the decade's highest Gold and Platinum award achievements.

Included in the RIAA’s 2000-2009 count (below) are the artists who received the most G&P certifications, the best selling music releases, and a timeline of notable decade dates.

“We’ve seen a decade of major music milestones and extraordinary artist achievements as part of our historic Gold and Platinum program,” said Mitch Bainwol, Chairman and CEO, RIAA. “The names, songs and albums on our list are the decade’s best and are etched in our music DNA.”

“As the way fans access and enjoy music continues to evolve, so has and will the G&P program in recognizing the highest commercial and artistic success,” added Bainwol. “As a community, we’ve endured our share of challenges, but the new decade brings reasons for hope and optimism. The appetite for music is stronger than ever and the breadth of innovation is amazing. In this ever-evolving landscape, we’re grateful that the RIAA’s Gold and Platinum program continues to be the music industry’s recognized brand for success.”

While the RIAA’s Gold and Platinum program was officially launched in 1958, the past decade included a number of significant milestones:

On May 10, 2001 Sony/Jive boy band *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached (2000) became the first album of the decade to earn an RIAA Diamond award marking more than ten million in U.S. sales. The decade of Diamond albums that followed -- from Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory to Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me and more -- represent some of the best and most influential recordings in G&P history.

In 2004 the RIAA formally expanded its G&P program to include a Digital Sales award in endorsement of the significant sales of emerging digital music formats. Two years later, in 2006, the RIAA launched the Master Ringtone Sales Award to recognize the growing popularity of enjoying music through cellular phones.

Come 2008 the RIAA heralded the 50th anniversary of its historic Gold Record, marking 50 years to the day Elvis was awarded his first Gold award for “Hard Headed Woman,” one of the King’s 53 Gold single certifications from the RIAA.

Several of the decade’s best awards were presented in 2009, including the best-selling digital download of all time -- at 5x multi-Platinum -- to Warner/Atlantic rapper Flo Rida for his hit “Low” as well as the highest certified ringtone ever to Universal/Cash Money artist Lil Wayne for his hot phone tone “Lollipop,” also at 5x multi-Platinum.

The following are the decade’s highest Gold and Platinum award achievements:

BTW, the current list of RIAA is about the first decade of the new century. So Michael is the biggest selling male artist in the USA in this century!, including Thriller being the best selling album, as it was in the 20th century!

Included in the RIAA’s 2000-2009 count are the artists who received the most G&P certifications, the best selling music releases.

MJ'S GLOBAL ALBUM SALES THIS WEEK (Issued Feb 19th 2010)

-This Is It drops from #13 to #18 selling 56,000 copies. This Is It has sold 3,630,000 since it's release so far.

-Jackson sold 167,000 albums this week around the world down from 190,000 the week before.

-So far in 2010, MJ has sold 1,350,000 albums around the world. This is on top of the 29,000,000 he sold in 2009! (According to Hits Daily Double)

-I imagine interest in MJ's catalogue will continue to slightly decline for the next several months until June when the 1 year anniversary of his death will allow for a surge in album sales. A possible new album release around this time could also allow for a spike in album sales.

what i want to know. Thriller is the best selling Album in the US since 26 years now.
What was the best selling album before Thriller?

This is a great news...They have to do it someday and I think this is great time for it. It's always nice to relive that golden era and those golden hits. But I wonder who will sing the "Who's Loving You".....any guesses????

Janet Jackson Joining Jackson 5 World Tour ;

"Jermaine Jackson has confirmed that the youngest member of the family, Janet Jackson, is set to join the remaining members of the Jackson 5 on their upcoming world tour in place of Michael Jackson.

“Janet will be joining us. We’re all talking about it now. She has never played with us before so that will be very special. She definitely wants to do it,” WENN quotes Jermaine as saying of the Jackson 5 tour. “We had a conference call and Janet has agreed to join us on tour.”

The shows, which remain unannounced, will be the first the Jackson 5 have played since Michael passed away last June. It’s unclear yet whether Janet will actually “replace” (sing/dance his actual parts) Michael in the band, or whether she’ll play her own set. Either way, the group are sure to pay much tribute to their deceased brother."

Jermaine has been talking about this for 15 years now.

And when Mike dies, he continues???

I know Mike loved Jermaine very very much. But for me it seems a little greedy!
