Michael Jackson Album Sales After Death: An In-Depth Look

That is the list that should be the big news maker, yet it's ignored by the general public due to the fact Billboard doesn't publicize it. Everyone is calling Taylor Swift the artist of the year due to the Billboard 100 and 200 charts. Stupid Billboard and their biased rules, it's crap! MJ outsold every artist in 2009 and that should be at least put into a press release or something.

Yeah, those clowns at sony should do something other than screw another project, I mean look how they failed with This is It, the single...., the notion that all of the seats were sold out... do something right and give some PR about our guys sales

And don't forget the injustice it caused to the best selling MJ albums since his death. According to those ridiculous BB rules Number Ones has never been a #1 album in US and "Essential"s peak is #75 or something. It ranked #2 this year.
When you look how these albums fare you'll find them charted below than the real places. It's very unfair to the best selling albums(not only for MJ albums), because of those albums we have stable market.

According to figures from Billboard, Michael Jackson was the #1 catalogue artist of the 2000's decade. He ranked higher than AC/DC, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, Metallica, and The Beatles. That's pretty impressive. It's essentially saying that not counting new artists, MJ's back catalogue outsold every other act. Incredible!

Also, Billboard recently published a little blurb on MJ's sales on Billboard.biz. Here is an interesting comparison. Remember, the first numbers are only from June 25th 2009 to November 30th. It does not include Jan-June 24th, and the month of December so actual 2009 numbers are higher. ( ) = 2008 sales

US ALBUM SALES: 7,000,000 (300,000)
US DIGITAL DOWNLOADS: 10,200,000 (1,200,000)
US DVD SALES: 1,300,000 (70,000)

Remember, actual 2009 US numbers are higher. Album sales are over 7.5 million, Digital downloads are over 11 million, and DVD sales are over 1.5 million.

wow... does the beatles catalogue include 1 though? And if it did would MJ still beat the beatles record?

And did any artist sell more than MJ this decade? new or old?

As far as I know....,1 was released in 2000s so it wasn't consider as a catalog album then.
I think MJ is currently ranked #22 in decade's top sellers list(it's not bad considering he only had one album released during that period). Which headed by Eminem with more than 32 million albums sold.

Updated worldwide sales figures for MJ during 2009 (sales up to Dec 6th);

TH 3,321,206
1's 3,101,621
Ess 2,575,450
TII 2,305,956
KOP 1,717,156
Bad 1,715,122
Dan 1,455,404
OTW 1,423,203
INV 796,874
His 732,455
J5/Jack 1,667,916

Total Since 25/06 = 20,812,363

Jan-June = 600,000 (minimum)

Grand Total = 21,412,363 (minimum)

There are some MJ solo album sales missing from these figures (BOTD, 18 Greatest Hits, Ben, etc.), where I have not been able to gather enough information, but these will only be a small percentage in comparision to the overall total.

A lot of the abve figures will be based on sales in the 'Major' countries (US, UK, Ger, Japan, France, Canada, Netherlands, etc.) with an additional 10% 'average' added for missing countries. This very often underestimates MJ's sales - as he sales well above the 'average' in most foreign territories - so the above figures can be taken as 'minimum' totals.

^ I'd agree with those numbers, they are within a few thousand of my own figures. When all is said and done, MJ will have sold 22 million albums in 2009 including J-5 material, Motown, etc. I will have a complete breakdown at the end of the year with exact totals for everything. 2009 belongs to MJ, no artist has ever sold this many albums in one year, the last time was Thriller.

but MJ overall sold more than 32 million this decade. Much more, does that mean he's #1 overall?

The 32 million Eminem figure is only from the US. Jackson sold around 16-17 million albums this decade in the US which is why he wasn't in the top place. Globally, Jackson sold over 60 million albums this decade.

Invincible: 10 million
Number Ones: 10 million
Off The Wall: 4.5 million
Thriller: 11.5 million
Bad: 5.5 million
Dangerous: 4 million
HIStory: 2 million
This Is It: 2.5 million
Essential: 3.5 million
King Of Pop: 2 million
Other (Motown, Ultimate Collection, Visionary, J-5 Material, etc): 5 million

TOTAL: 60.5 million

wow...32 million in america only? that's quite an achievement. But where does MJ stand on a worldwide scale?

EDIT: BTW i think it's more than 60 million. I remember hearing he sold 50 million units before his death.

60 million ALBUMS, that figure is strictly albums and does not include digital downloads, DVD sales, ringtones, singles, etc. If you were to include those the number jumps to near 100 million units sold this decade alone.

^ not true. There are projects in the works for next year. Here a few my sources have told me:

1) THIS IS IT DVD Release On Jan 26th. This will tie in with the Grammy's and Sony is working with big box stores such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy, Target, etc to set up DVD stands in the aisles of the stores that will also have the This Is It CD. Expect sales for the CD to increase as well during this time period.

2) NEW ALBUM of material. MJ's comeback album will be released this year. It will contain music recorded between 2002 and 2009. I am told over 30 songs exist from this time period and the best 15 will be combined into an album with "several singles" which will be released globally including one coming out near MJ's birthday. Sony already has begun to compose a set list and is currently picking and choosing songs that will make the cut. Some songs will have producers working on them, while others will remain identical to how Mj left them. A release date is up in the air right now. The estate is pushing for an end of June release to coincide with the 1 year anniversary of MJ's death, or a August 29th release for MJ's b-day. Sony want's it earlier perhaps in March or April. Regardless, this new album will be huge and sell millions. Sony believes with proper marketing, MJ's new album could sell over 10 million copies globally and become the biggest selling album of 2010.

3) Cirque Du Soleil MJ style is currently in the planning stages. The estate is all for it I'm told and the details will be worked out with Branca and Mcclain. I am told the family is also pushing for this rather than the AEG Vegas act that has been proposed. I am told the family is trying to ditch AEG as they still don't trust them and would rather have MJ's name attached to the Cirque Du Soleil brand. Details will be announced in 2010 regarding the future of this project but I am told it will go ahead.

4) Jermaine's London Tribute Concert is being organized for June of 2010. My sources say there is doubt about the future of this, as half the family doesn't support it, there is a hard time getting artists to confirm, plus many in the Jackson circle feel Jermaine has "other motives". This one is a 50/50 right now.

5) More Merchandise! The estate is planning for a host of new merchandise to be released in 2010. New shirts, sweaters, pants, cologne, stuffed animals, games, etc will be released in MJ's name. Many will appear at your local shopping mall so keep your eyes out for these.

So remember, 2010 will still have plenty of MJ. It won't be as eventful as 2009 (it never will be, since the year of the actual death is always the biggest), but you can still expect tons of press, and releases for the fans.

I just reread your post again smooth_criminal05 and you've seriously got me excited for what's to come. Of course, I'd rather things be different, for Michael to be here with us and watching him create more projects for his fans. But all of the above seem like a gift all the same from Michael.

About the Cirque show. . . what you do know is that the estate is very interested in pursuing this project?? I think the original article had said that Cirque wanted to see how the 'Viva Elvis' show went before committing to do a show about Michael. That show opens this week I think. However, in my humble opinion I think a show featuring Michael's music might be even more popular especially at the moment since a lot of people became new fans in 2009. I really hope that this becomes a reality and isn't just hot smoke blowing.

I hadn't heard anything about an AEG Vegas act and ITA with you that the estate and the family need to get away from AEG. They have made more than enough money on Michael now. I just don't know what to say about them anymore.

The new album is the cherry on top for me. I am just wondering if Sony plans on making music videos for the 'several singles'. I know that Rodney Jerkins taped all of his studio sessions with Michael and has several unreleased tracks. So maybe we will get to see some of that footage after all.

I also hope that one day Motown will release that entire Stevie Wonder produced album. 'Buttercup' is easily my favorite track on 'I want you back! Unreleased Masters'. Sorry to be so calculating, but Motown should have released that if they wanted another hit album.

US ALBUM SALES THIS WEEK:

-Sales were up as we get closer to Christmas with THIS IS IT shifting 82,000 copies bringing it's total in the US to 1,050,000 since it's release. HDD ranked it #11 this week in it's list of best sellers.

-Number Ones also seen an increase in sales selling over 40,000 copies (up over 30% over last week).

-Thriller, Essential, Bad, Dangerous, Off The Wall, and Invincible all seen double digit gains this week as well.

-In total, Jackson sold 190,000 albums this week in the US...that's up from 150,000 last week.

-Jackson has also had 4 albums this year sell over 1 million copies in the US alone! That is a huge achievement in today's industry. The albums were Number Ones, Essential, Thriller, and This Is It.

-Total sales since Jackson's death in the US are now over 7.5 million!

^Thriller and Essential both sold over 15,000 copies. Bad sold around 7,000. Off The Wall and Dangerous sold each around 5000, Invincible near 3,500

According to Mr. Paul Grein.,here are some achievements MJ has accomplished this year;

He has sold officially 7,676,000 albums(US) so far this year.
Jackson is on track to become the first artist in Nielsen/SoundScan history to have four albums in the year-end top 20(Garth Brooks had 3).
Number Ones will probably finish #3 for the year. That would be the highest year-end ranking for a greatest hits album in Nielsen/SoundScan history. Garth Brooks' The Hits was the #5 album of 1995.
It would also be the highest year-end ranking for an album by an artist who had died. 2Pac's All Eyez On Me was the #6 album of 1996. The Notorious B.I.G.'s Life After Death was the #6 seller of 1997.
Number Ones, which was released in 2003, will also become the first catalog album to make the year-end top 10 in Nielsen/SoundScan history.

That's something for the record!

GLOBAL NUMBERS THIS WEEK:

-This Is It continues to perform extremely well on global charts. The album was #5 this week (up one position from last week), selling 265,000 copies.

-This Is It broke through the 2.5 million mark in overall sales since it was released 7 weeks ago.

-Number Ones sold 50,000 copies this week around the globe, also up from last week.

-Jackson's catalogue performed well, with all major titles including Dangerous, Bad, Off The Wall, and Invincible seeing double digit gains over last week.

-Sales this week were a very impressive 450,000 for Jackson's catalogue up from 380,000 last week.

-Jackson has now sold 20.46+ million albums since his death around the planet.

Susan Boyle's new album shifted another 1.1 million copies this week and shows no signs of slowing down. The album has now sold over 3.3 million copies since it's release three weeks ago, easily maintaining it's #1 spot on the global chart. Next week, expect sales to eclipse 1 million again taking the total to 4.3 to 4.5 million range, with the final week of 2009 still to come. Total sales for the year for this album will be 5.3 to 5.5 million, easily making it the #1 album of 2009.

Here is the thing I don't get.

MJ is the #1 star in the world. And his death was probably the biggest event since 9/11.

His album sales while at 20+ million is impressive, he should have the #1 album of the year.

But then again. He has many popular albums for people to choose from. So the sales will reasonably be split.

But how in the world does Susan Boyle sell a million+ a week with one album?

That hasn't happened since Thriller. Thriller sold a million copies every 4 days at one point. And sold a million copies a week as well.

How does Susan sell at a rate that thriller did? Especially in today's market.

Because old people by her albums... :p Nah, it's just good promotion... :cheeky:

I honestly have no idea why. Is the album that good? It's just a bunch of covers, right?

Anyways, I feel like she's going to be one of those novelty acts that has a huge hit and then disappears altogether... so let her have her moment while she still has it.

Oh yea, Thriller was selling a million copies a week in the US in its peak. Worldwide sales of Thriller at that point probably eclipses over 1 million a week.

Yea. Your probably right.

I wonder who much it was selling worldwide. I have to ask around.

So MJ cracks the 20 million mark!
Well it's not that impressive for SuBo she scored 1M globally. Don't forget this is her only and first album, if MJ only had one album he has had easily sold 2M+ albums in one week.
Obviously if there's only one album out there to buy of MJ he could have set new record for the best selling album of the year globally.
