It's going exceptionally well, in some cases beating out the likes of Rihanna's loud tour in terms of grossing numbers and attendance in some cases! And technically it's not a theatre tour as she's played quite a few arenas on this tour and even stadiums, but for the most part she does do multiple dates in large theatres.
New date - Palm Springs, Ca December 1st
Janet Jackson, the reigning star of a family of show biz royalty, will headline the McCallum Theatre's annual gala benefit on Dec. 1.
The recording, film and television star follows such past gala performers as Diana Ross, Jennifer Hudson, Liza Minnelli, Barry Manilow and Tony Bennett, but her status harkens back to the early days of the McCallum, when its benefits honored the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Elizabeth Taylor and Bob Hope.
Mitch Gershenfeld, McCallum director of theater presentations and operations, said the theater was able to book Jackson because her manager, Jason Winters, lives in Palm Springs and “loves the McCallum.”
The gala will include the concert and dinner at one of four mid-valley restaurants: Jillian's, Wally's Desert Turtle in Rancho Mirage, Ruth's Chris Steak House or Cuistot.
Tickets for the dinner and concert go on sale Monday for $500 and are only available by calling (760) 346-6505 Ext. 126 or 133.
Tickets for just the concert at the McCallum go on sale Nov. 24 at the theater box office and its website for $100 and $150.
Proceeds will benefit McCallum Theatre Institute programs, including arts education activities.
The evening will honor McCallum trustee emeritus Gilbert Schnitzer, who joined the board in 1997, and his wife, Thelma.
McCallum president and CEO Ted Giatas said in a statement the couple demonstrated “exemplary generosity and service to the McCallum since 1986.”
They will co-chair the gala with their sister-in-law, Arlene Schnitzer.
Gilbert Schnitzer said in a statement he and his wife are proud to be honored because of “the outstanding educational programs the McCallum Theatre Institute provides to our community and the stellar entertainment the theater presents.”
Jackson, the youngest sibling of the late Michael Jackson, joined the family act in 1973 at age 7. In 1977, she had a recurring role on the sitcom “Good Times.” She also appeared in the '80s on “Diff'rent Strokes” and “Fame.”
Her first album after separating her career from her family was the 1986 mega- hit “Control,” featuring the singles “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” “Nasty,” “When I Think of You” and the title track.
Jackson segued into film in 1993, playing opposite Tupac Shakur in “Poetic Justice.” She went on to star in “Nutty Professor II: The Klumps” with Eddie Murphy and appeared in three movies directed by Tyler Perry.
Now 45, Jackson has been called one of the wealthiest women in entertainment by Forbes magazine. The Recording Industry Association of America ranks her as America's 11th best-selling female artist with 26 million certified albums sold. In 2008, Billboard listed her at No. 7 in its Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists.
