Kimi's column: Pre-German GP - In a good shape

These races in Germany have never gone as I have been hoping for. Obviously the both circuits – Hockenheim & Nurburgring – have not been very kind to me in the past. That said I like them both and I have always been very competitive there.

I suppose my German highlights are my pole positions. You never gain any points from them, so we better change the course also there.

I have been leading many times the race in Germany, but always something has gone wrong. Like last year in Nurburgring we got the pole, but we never finished the race.

Now we go to Hockenheim. It will be my first Grand Prix weekend there with Ferrari. I remember last race in that circuit two years ago. It was a 1-2 for Ferrari and I was the third in the podium.

Last week we had a very productive test and I tried various new parts. Judging by the lap times it’s going to be very close again, but I feel Ferrari will be very competitive and we are fighting for the win.

I’ll hope for the hot weather. Usually in Hockenheim it has been very hot and everybody has had problems with the tyres.

Obviously, for us, the hot weather suits fine. Our car prefers the hot temperatures and in the long run it’s not that hard on tyres, too. So my thumbs are up for the real summer weather in Hockenheim.

Overtaking is difficult in Hockenheim, but it’s not all about the qualifying there. Certainly it makes life easier when starting from the front and a driver has the clean air.

I have always said the championship would be very tight. I’ve been in a position to win the last 3 Grands Prix, but for various reasons things did not go my way. But that’s racing and I’m sure the wins will soon come again.

I feel it will be tight for the rest of the season and every point could be the difference to being champion as proved to be the case last year.

Now it’s even more even, while we three leaders are tied. Obviously, it’s very interesting carry on the fight and look who’s who in the next race. While testing I had such a good feeling with the car. I believe both the car and the driver are top fit for this weekend. We really need to win this one.

Last week after the test I had the privilege to work for the EU Congress and be part of introducing the young drivers’ road safety program in Brussels. We racing drivers should give an example for the youth and show how important it’s to exercise caution in the traffic, obey the common rules and use always the safety belts.

Speeding is only allowed in the racing circuits. I wish the message will go through. It’s just so stupid to risk yourself and the other for nothing.

I like his thoughts, as always. They always give me good feeling and I try to be as optimistic as he is. He couldn't win without self-confidence or without optimism. I want Ferrari to be 110% perfect during this weekend. They have to show the supporters, their boss, to McLaren that they are the best. Keep flying Kimi!!!!:clapping::clapping: You can make it - but you have to have a great team in your surrounding. I hope it will be your time there at Hockenheim. There you had some great races with McLaren but no wins so far. You really deserves a win in Germany, and I trust in you 100%!

OMG!!! Wach this! You can buy one of the 200 special editioned Fiat 500 (Ferrari-red of course!) in one of the Ferrari saloons... Don't you wanna have this cute car?!

It's really strange to me that Schumi said it now, almost 2 years after his retirement's statement. What does this mean? I don't get it. Is it good or bad for Massa or for Kimi?

^ Yeah, I don't get it either..
I don't actually get that either why it would've been OK for him to compete with Kimi but not with Massa? Or am I just stupid and don't get it?

I think he wouldn't have afraid of anyone, being a 7 time world champion, but I guess it's easy for him to say this since it never happened.

I don't get it why he said this now and not 2 years earlier. If he kept this in secret why on Earth was it important to tell it now to the public...??!! Then why he didn't keep it to himself.

What do you think about that Ferrari-red Fiat 500? Isn't it lovely and stylish?

Yeah it's very cute! ^_^ It looks very cool from the inside
It would be useful for city-driving because of its little size..

Oh My God!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can you believe this???!!! If this is true, then I think I didn't know Schumacher at all... it's really surprising and shocking to me...

Massa the reson I retired - Schumacher

Nearly two years after announcing his retirement as a Formula One driver, Michael Schumacher has cited his former team-mate Felipe Massa as a primary reason for hanging up his racing helmet.

"I stopped because I didn't want my friend Felipe Massa to be unemployed," the Swiss newspaper Blick quotes the seven time world champion as saying.

"I would have had no problem going up against Kimi Raikkonen," Schumacher adds, refuting the common claim that he objected to having the Finn as his 2007 team-mate.

Ok I've read another interview in german in a magazine not too long ago. Schumi is pretty annoyed about this. He did just respond a bit annoyed to the question (as it was asked in the way, didn't you leave only not to compete with Kimi?), and he did respond to that saying that he didn't leave cuz of Kimi coming. He left cuz he wanted to retire and if he needed a reason (which he personally thinks he doesn't) he left more for the reason cuz there would have been no driver seat for Massa, who's a friend.
So he was more saying in the interview that his decision had nothing to do with any driver coming (the part was taken out of the whole context)... but if it would have been more to make space for Massa than for not eventually competing with Kimi.
that's all. *shrugs*

Over here on TV they are more discussions that some try to bring some trouble into the Ferrari team like this, as Schumi is still working for Ferrari as advisor what means in particular for both Massa AND Raikönen.

Yes! :) Have you seen the footage where Kimi arrived to Brussels' press conference with a silver/white Fiat 500. He uses this car because it's good for parking and it's practical. He was so cute in/with it. I liked it that he didn't use some huge and expensive Ferrari...

Oh, Mechi, thank you so much for replying and made it all clear to me. Now I completely understand the situation.

Here's another example how the media could twist around things and facts.

China from Herend to the Winner of the Hungarian Grand Prix

The world wide known China Factory of Herend has been the Official Supplier of the Hungarian GP for 3 years. This year there you can see the Chain Bridge with the Fisherman's Castle on the pot vases (in 2006 there was the Castle Hill and in 2007 the Houses of Parliament on the vases). It was made by extremely talented master painters and the work lasted 3 months. The prices of these - which are of course unique ones, no other will be made of them - are 10 million HUF (approx. 43.500 EUR).

Aren't they beautiful?

I sooo hope that Kimi will get the biggest vase!!!!! :)

^ Yes they really look beautiful :)

Thanks, Mechi for clearing this up :) Now this thing makes some sence.

Ferrari: Ready to rebound at Hockenheim

The tenth round of this year's championship takes place on Sunday at the Hockenheimring, with Formula One visiting the famous track for the first time since 2006.

Along with its rivals, Ferrari tested at the circuit last week completing its entire planned programme: this included testing some minor aero updates as well as new mechanical components. Both Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa were happy with the balance of the F2008, feeling they had established a good basis from which to start work this coming Friday morning.

Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa are tied at the top of the championship standings with Lewis Hamilton on 48 points, while Ferrari lead the constructors' championship with 96 points, 14 clear of BMW Sauber.

Kimi Raikkonen
"I hope it will be hot, as it usually is at Hockenheim. Our car goes really well at high temperatures and also the tyre-wear is not too high. So I really hope it will be hot. It's hard to overtake, but the qualifying doesn't determine the result as on other tracks: although starting from the first row will make life much easier."

"I've always said that the championship will be very uncertain. I had the possibility to win the last three races, but for one reason or the other things didn't go the right way: but that's racing and I'm sure I'll win again soon. Every point will be important, just like last year.

Three drivers tied on the top spot and a fourth, who is three points behind: that's a very interesting situation. I had some really good impressions of the F2008: I'm convinced that we'll be at the max."

Felipe Massa
"We haven't been racing at Hockenheim since 2006: back then I came in second behind Michael. I like this track, although I've never raced on the old one with its long straights. I had some pretty good races there and in 2006 I was really fast: I hope that I'll be in the same position and maybe even make a step forward in the final result."

"There are some parts, which remind of Magny-Cours and there's always a great atmosphere, especially at the Motodrom, where you can feel the fans really close from inside the car. Now that there's only one race in Germany, it is a very important event for Formula 1 in general and, even if Michael won't be here for the first time, I'm sure that there will be lots of fans and we'll have fun. I'm sure Michael will be at the Ferrari box, although not for driving..."

Stefano Domenicali, Team Principal
"Now we embark on the second half of the season, after a positive first half, given that our two drivers, along with one another, are jointly leading the Drivers' classification, while the Scuderia heads the Constructors' Championship."

"However, while we can only be happy with this situation, we know we missed several opportunities to score more points. In pure performance terms, the team, the drivers and the car have proven to be competitive at all circuits and in every track condition, but for a variety of unusual reasons, we have not always found ourselves in a position to capitalise on this. With this in mind, we have analysed all those reasons and reached the conclusion that we have to pay even closer attention to every single detail. Methods for doing this have occupied our time in Maranello since the last race."

Vettel set to be confirmed at Red Bull

The big rumour in the Hockenheim paddock on Thursday is that Sebastian Vettel will shortly be announced as Mark Webber's team-mate at Red Bull Racing for 2009.

The news will apparently be revealed during a press conference at the German circuit.

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner recently said the rumours about Vettel, 21, moving from Toro Rosso to the energy drink's senior team is a 'possibility'.

"We always try to have the best possible driver pairing," he added.

well Schumi was just interviewed on german tv rtl... he said, it's still possible to win for both Felipe and Kimi... but then he wanted to go to help finding out what's wrong with Kimis car. He said it will be a whole nights work and then Kimi will might still win it.
Then they've interviewed Nobert Haug team McLaren Mercedes... he said it will be an exciting race but Mercedes will win at the end cuz Hamilton will be the strongest when it rains!

 dear God let Schumi be right about this ok!!!!!

^ I hope he's right too!! Let's not fall to despair yet, everything can happend ;)

Thanks Kinga for all the lovely pics. I don't know where you always find new ones of him but he is just so funny and adorable

Err.... Hamilton on the pole and if it's going to rain - not looking very good for Kimi
6th place isn't the most flattering place to be but we know that he's a great driver and is still in it to win this race

And good job for Heikki again, he's starting to learn how to drive on qualifyings :cheeky:

edit: Here has been huge speculations of Kovalainen moving back to Renault and Rosberg coming to his place on McLaren but if I understood right Haug has denied all the rumours and Heikki is still with McLaren..

Yeah, it would be great! But I don't see the good result in Kimi's driving now. Or I don't know. Is it the car issue...? He can't do so many mistakes. He does so many mistakes in 10 races. So they can't be his I guess. Balance, understeer or oversteer... I don't know. I'm dissapointed...:(

So the series of bad luck at the German rings continues...

Let's hope for a better result for tomorrow. I think with some luck and great driving he might catch 3rd position. That would not be the end of the world. Still he says this...

"All weekend long, we have been struggling a bit to find a good set-up for the car. At the end of yesterday, it seemed we were on the right road and this morning we tried to improve still further down this path, but it was not the right one. Then, in qualifying, we went reasonably well with low fuel, but in the final session, the car was not as good. Clearly sixth place is not satisfying and tomorrow we won't be in for an easy time, but it's definitely not the end of the world. It will be a long race tomorrow and that's when the points are allocated. For our part, we will do all we can to get a good finish position."

Thanks Kinga for all the lovely pics. I don't know where you always find new ones of him but he is just so funny and adorable

You're welcome. I try to select the best ones and post it here. :cheeky:

Kimi Q & A (Interesting to read especially the bold and bigger lines!!!)

Q: Can you talk about how your car compared to the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton during the early stages of the British Grand Prix. How do you think it would have gone had the conditions not changed?

6sjp4.jpg
Kimi Raikkonen: They changed! We had a good car and it worked pretty well. I took it quite easy in the fast corners and I thought that when it was easier to go fast I did, but I didn’t want to take any risks. Unfortunately we made a mistake with the tyre choice and it cost us a lot.

Q: Rubens Barrichello said he got on the radio and said he was coming in for the extreme wets when the rain got worse. Did it cross your mind to do that sort of thing?
KR: No. In the end we decided to change the used tyres for a new set, but there were a few issues why we didn’t come in earlier.
First of all we didn’t expect it to keep raining for long and thought it would stop pretty soon, but it didn’t. In the end we had to wait a few laps so we could get enough fuel in the car to the end. You can say afterwards maybe we should have done something else, but we got good points and it wasn’t a disaster.

Q: If this was the Michael Schumacher era and your team-mate was Rubens Barrichello, you would be leading the championship now by about seven points. How do you feel about the next part of the season, particularly with Felipe alongside you and the intra-team rivalry you have at Ferrari now? You are taking points from one another in affect…
KR: I don’t see how it is any different from last year, so nothing has changed.

Q: But you only just won the title…
KR: That was enough, so it doesn’t make any difference. [This year] We had some bad races and we still gained the points after we fell behind after Monaco.
For sure we could have had better results since then, but we could be in a much worse position than we are right now. There is always going to be a fight between the team-mates and I think in the end whoever has the better chance…maybe there will be decisions or maybe not, it all depends really what is going to happen in the season half of the season now.

Q: Would you like another race in the rain this weekend?
KR: I don’t mind, it is the same for everybody and hopefully if it rains we have made some changes, we have learned from the mistakes and hopefully we can get it right this time.
33213505wg3.jpg
Q: I’m sure they have done the analysis back at Maranello since the last race, but once they put the right tyres back on you were still spinning off all over the place. Why was that?
KR: I went off a few times, but that happens some times. The first time I just aquaplaned off, the second time was more or less my mistake as I wanted to get a fast exit [out of the corner] but just spun off. That’s racing.

Q: There wasn’t an issue with not getting the heat into the tyres? Why doesn’t the Ferrari work in wet conditions?

KR: No, we made mistakes and the wrong decision on tyres. I wouldn’t say we are not fast in the wet – we won last year in the wet, so once we get it right I don’t think there will be any problems.

Q: Who do you think is best placed to win the most races, score the most points in the second half of the season?
KR: I don’t know. We are all on the same points; there are some new races, so it is very difficult to say what could happen.
I still think that there are some circuits that are stronger for one team that the others, so it’s more of a question to get it right the whole weekend and then we can win some races. We haven’t lost anything, but we could be in a better position also.

Q: Why do you think each driver has made so many mistakes so far this season? What can you do to ensure you make less mistakes than the others?
KR: We always try to make fewer mistakes, but sometimes they happen when you push hard. It’s up to us drivers, up to the team, to try and ensure they don’t happen.
But unfortunately in racing so many things can happen and sometimes it can be your fault, sometimes someone else’s and sometimes things don’t go exactly like you expect. Hopefully we can overcome the problems, not make so many mistakes and we can be up there when it counts.

Q: In terms of the world championship, how do you view your position now at this point of the season?
KR: It’s all open. There are three guys on the same points and the fourth guy is only two behind, so anything can really happen.
But hopefully we get some good races now and get good points, then we can see after that. It will probably be really close with all the guys until the end and if someone has a really bad race it could cost them a lot, but hopefully we don’t make many more mistakes.

97208867ns1.jpg
Q: You have already had some bad luck and the team has made some errors, so could it be said that the other title challengers didn’t make the most of those problems?
KR: Like I said, in the last four races I didn’t score points in two of them and didn’t exactly have the best race in the last one.
But still even with those results, we gained on the leader so we caught up with them. We could have been in a far worse position, so I’m pretty happy as, although we didn’t get the results we wanted, we are back in the joint lead and haven’t lost any ground. Maybe they should be a bit further ahead, but they are not so I’m happy for that.

Q: At Silverstone the McLarens were closer and faster than at Magny-Cours, so after the test here last week what do you expect here?
KR: It’s difficult to tell from testing, but I think it’s going to be very close between the two teams.
At Silverstone they seemed to be very fast in qualifying. I think if it had been a dry race we could have been very strong, but it in the wet it was what it was. Here it will probably be a similar story, so let’s see what we can do over the weekend, starting tomorrow, and we will get a little bit better of an idea.

Q: Do you think the fact that you finally won the world championship last year give you any sort of extra mental calmness for this year?
KR: For sure whatever is going to happen, if I lose I’m probably not going to be hurting as much as if I hadn’t won it before.
Last year, nobody really expected us to win and we were still able to win. So even when we have had bad races this year I wasn’t particularly worried about it, as even this season we have seen how quickly things can change. We are in a pretty good position and it is up to us to make the best out of it. We will do our best and hopefully it is enough.

Q: Psychologically, though, do you think you have the edge over your rivals, as you know what’s needed to win the championship and they don’t?
KR: I don’t think it makes any difference. All the drivers, including those who have never been champion have their own idea about what it takes. Some people are stronger in the head than others. I'm pretty relaxed about it. I will do my best and hopefully that will be enough. If it's not, then I can deal with that too, because there are more important things in life. I don’t know if I am stronger [mentally] – I am pretty relaxed, I don’t really think about that too much and I do the best and hopefully it is enough. When it’s a bad race I worry about it for a while, but put it out of my mind as there are much more serious things than just racing.

Yes, Kimi you are mentally stronger than the others  ;D

Now please Kimi's Ferrari, start working! And give Kimi a change to compete!

yeah, but I wanted to point out that he said that there are more important things in life than racing... That was really interesting and surprising to read. I don't really know what to think about it? That he's cool and calm or that he's not interested in it anymore. Or did he think it before also or just after he has won the championship? He said that that was his main goal and everything comes after would be a plus... so he thinks that if he can do it again than it's all good or if not than that's ok, too.

I'm sure that this 6th position won't have any bad effect on his driving or thinking, I'm quite sure the opposite will happen. He would be better I guess (hope). He proved it several times in the past that he can have good results from the middle of the grid. I try to be optimistic, which I'm not in my life.:)

Oh, that really didn't came to me as a surprise. He has pointed out several times that he's happy now that he won the championship that he had always dreamed of. That it's not the end of the world if he never won it again.
That I don't know did he think the same way before the championship, but as long as he likes driving I think it's ok.
Though I don't know does it make sence to compete if you don't have the desire to win?

I don't know, there are many signs of Kimi not be very long in Formule 1 anymore..

He has the desire to win!!! That's sure! Just he won't be sad if he can't make it. I think

He said that he's happier now because he's lost it 2 times before and it's much more a great feeling.

Retiring?! Guess what! In the official KR forum one fan said that she's heard that Kimi and Ferrari are talking about lenghten his contract after 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We don't know is it a reliable source or not but who knows??? If they are talking about this (which they didn't so far) then it's all good I guess.

But I can't help it it sounds to me more like a.. hobby or something if he's not sad if he doesn't achieve anything. I don't know how to put my thoughts to words but.. I don't know, lol .

Maybe he has just became a good loser. Huh?

Uh I so wish we could have someone who's fan of other drivers! We need some fresh blood here! :D

(a little 'goooooo' for Heikki too! :D )

Stefano Domenicalli is dumb, period.

WHAT kind of a strategy is this???????????????????? Calling in the 2 drivers in the same time??? come on.......

Kimi showed that he can drive that car very good even if it wasn't the best. He overtook at least 9 cars. They saved the points what the team tried to throw away from him, AGAIN.

Massa - not good at all, I would have liked to see Kimi's and Hamilton's fight... Kimi wouldn't have let Hamilton so easily. They repeated the situation from Turkey.

Hamilton and McLaren can shine because all the others make mistakes all the time!

I don't wanna see him being a world champion, at least not yet.

I don't wanna see Massa being a world champion, he's not better than Kimi AT ALL. But it seems that the team gives him advantages. That's what I feel.

If Kimi doesn't say anything (that I think he won't) than I think Ferrari would go with Massa!!! Just because Massa is good at qualifying he gets all the advantages all the time. How they can't see the race speed???!!! Kimi is far better!!!!

What's that that McLaren doesn't have engine failure, rear wing failure, any reliability problems AT ALL!!!!!!!!

It was so painful as a Kimi fan to hear Ron Dennis' comment to Lewis "Sorry we made a little bit harder for you" How hard it has been for Kimi in McLaren for 5 years!!!! Just look at all the problems they have had.....

and then they said that Kimi was a hard driver and they can't build him a car, they have to build him a tank... and what are they talking about nowadays? That he's a too soft driver (like Nick Heidfeld) and that's why he struggles during qualifying that he can't heat the tyres in time.

What are they talking about that McLaren doesn't have a team order??? hahaha I don't like YOU Heikki anymore because you are dumb, too.

I can't take it anymore... I can't say anything.

Now comes Hungaroring, and it's better for McLaren again.... I don't wanna go and see Lewis' :D face again!

I totally understand you and your pain because I'm angry too, because Hamilton only does well because of Ferrari's stupid mistakes.
I didn't know they called Kimi a soft driver? That just proves that the whole McLaren team is full of do-I-tell-what.
When Hamilton got over Massa - if Kimi was on Felipes' position Hamilton would never got to pass him.

But it's not Heikki's fault if McLaren tells him to do space for Lewis. It definitely wasn't an accident when Hamilton got pass him but I don't want to blame him. For sure Heikki would like to beat Hamilton sometimes.

Me either, believe me. Now let's cross our hands and pray for the end of the season. *sigh*

Ok, I think Heikki knows what to do, but he was a little bit too polite.

I'm afraid McLaren is a little bit ahead of Ferrari right now. Plus Ferrari always makes mistakes nowadays and let McLaren to do well.

I'm so curious what Kimi would say about this race...
