Magny Cours rumblings persist

The two days since the chequered flag at Magny Cours did little to quieten rumblings about the spate of penalties incurred by McLaren drivers in recent times.

Following Lewis Hamilton's ten-place drop for his Montreal pitlane crash, the British driver was given a controversial drive-through penalty for passing Sebastian Vettel illegally at Magny-Cours last Sunday.

"I would never have given out a penalty for that," triple world champion Niki Lauda told the German newspaper /Bild/.

In qualifying in France, meanwhile, Heikki Kovalainen was ordered to drop five places on the grid for blocking Mark Webber in qualifying.

But the Swiss newspaper /Blick/ quotes Red Bull racer Webber as wondering after the incident: "Did someone block me?"

While the Hamilton drive-through was regarded by some a marginal call, it is also true that stewards could have ordered black and orange flags to be waved at Kimi Raikkonen's flailing Ferrari at Magny Cours.

*So why was the Finn, who finished the race second, allowed to keep driving with his right exhaust pipe hanging on by nothing more than a thin cable?

"The race director considered the risk to be low, as the part in question was light,"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a FIA spokesperson is quoted as saying by /GPWeek/.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minardi on Hamilton - Nervy Hamilton must raise his game

*No fewer than four drivers have outclassed Lewis Hamilton so far in 2008, according to former Formula One team owner Giancarlo Minardi.

The Italian told /minardi.it/ that, notwithstanding the McLaren driver's Melbourne and Monaco wins, he believes four of 23-year-old Hamilton's competitors have been more impressive this season.

"Robert Kubica has committed no errors, with his only tally of zero points in Australia with the collision with Nakajima; that was not his fault.

"Without that, he would be far ahead in the championship," Minardi, who at the end of 2000 sold his Faenza based squad to Paul Stoddart, said.

"Another one, certainly, is Fernando Alonso, who even with an uncompetitive machine always shows something. And, of course, the two Ferrari drivers," he added, referring to championship leader Felipe Massa, and his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.

However, 60-year-old Minardi is reluctant to be too hard on Hamilton, predicting that he will be among the top drivers in the future.

"But at the moment, he is committing very serious errors of inexperience and displays an excess of nervousness. Over the next Grand Prix he must demonstrate his ability to improve in these areas."

Aww it' svery nice. " I speak only when I have to do it" lol

He gained his 499th point in the all time list of F1. There are only 6 drivers that have 500 or more points! I think he can reach in his career Alonso (500), Barrichello, Coulthard and Senna and he would become the 3rd most successful driver in F1 in terms of scoring points (Schumacher is the first of course and Prost is the second) - nice list, isn't it?
It is

Do you know when was this? During the Barcelona test when he had his new hair cut and one of the journalists asked him whether it is a superstition or what? Kimi's answer was: Sometimes you have to have a hair cut....:give_heart:

Kimi and Jenni were doing a photo shoot in Paris, it was a product launch for Kimi's own sunglass brand.

Here's one photo:
tagheuer2008mag3.jpg

I didn't find an article in internet and am too lazy to search it so I can quickly translate a short interview from a Finnish magazine. NO PROBLEM from this ;)

Kimi suffered in the photo shoot

- Jenni was enjoying the photo shoot but for me it's not the most comfortable thing in the world. Actually I would just like to race, Kimi Räikkönen admitted in the product launch of his new sunglass collection.

Dressed in a desing-jeans, simple black t-shirt and white plimsoles (?) the Finland's F1- ambassador speaked the same old things about Ferrari team's "good packet", "F1 season's lenght" and "rest of the races" but clearly he wanted to be somewhere else.

-It's always hard to know how the next race is going to go. It's good to comepte with number one and I hope I can keep it 'til next season, the formule miracle from Espoo said with the new glasses on his forehead.

After only 15 minutes the show was over and Räikkönen - for who the photo shoot was a "fantastic experience" according to a official statement - left on his private plane back to his home in Swizerland.

Here are the Kimi-glasses! In the left corner there is a Kimi-sign. A prize for these sporty glasses will be 290-390 €

An interesting interview:

Q: But how do you win the championship betting on both drivers ?
Baldisserri: ''The recipe is very simple, you just need to always finish first and second. We've got a winning car and I don't see why it's not possible to obtain this objective.''

Q: Perhaps the problem is to understand when Raikkonen speaks over the radio...
Baldisserri: ''There's no problem. I admit that at the beginning we've had some difficulties, but we've overcome all of that. The difference between two drivers can be seen in many ways, also by looking at the way they communicate with the team over the radio. Each driver has its own style. And it's really not all that difficult to compare Kimi with other drivers. From the outside he may seem like someone that just mutters some words, but I can guarantee it's not like that. On the contrary, he's actually speaks in a very outspoken way.''

What are the differences between Massa and Raikkonen ?
Baldisserri: ''Technically they're different. Kimi wants a car that is very fast going into a corner, when he releases the brake pedal he still has a high speed and he perfectly steers the car over the track. That's his strength. Felipe is exactly the opposite. He enters the car more slowly and tries to maximise the phase of traction. The one is chanceless when he has understeer whereas the other can cope with it. As for the rest: one is very calm and 'cool' whereas the other is open and sometimes impulsive. But that doesn't complicate the work of the team.''

Q: Raikkonen has already won the championship. Can Massa do it ?
Baldisserri: ''Felipe is driver that has made a lot of progress. I've know him since his period as testdriver, he's learned from Schumacher with an extraordinary humility. Last year he was brilliant but he paid the price for the reliability woes of the car. He's very strong in qualifying and in the race he can benefit from this quality of his. For me he can win (the championship).''

Engine change definate for Silverstone

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali thinks his team will change Kimi Raikkonen's engine for the British Grand Prix following his exhaust problems in Magny-Cours. Raikkonen suffered a broken exhaust in the French GP, which cost him victory but also led to light damage to his car and engine.
And to avoid the possibility of further problems at Silverstone, the team are now set to replace Raikkonen's power unit for this weekend's race.
They can do so without the usual 10-place grid penalty because a new 'one free engine change' rule that was introduced at the start of this year.
Domenicali said on Tuesday: "As far as Kimi's engine is concerned and keeping the rules in mind, to avoid a penalty, I think that we will use a new unit to try to reduce the risk."
The approach with Raikkonen comes after Domenicali admitted that his team have thrown away points this year through poor reliability and mistakes.
"Looking at the numbers we can be satisfied of what we have done until now, but we can't forget that it wasn't all that smooth," he told Ferrari's official website. "We left some important points down the road, because of a lack of reliability or because of mistakes on every level. Our situation in the championship could be much better.
"Even during a weekend when our performance was much better than the one of our competitors, we risked to not reach our goal by a defect or some minor detail. We were able and also lucky to bring home Kimi's car (in France). But this alarm bell has to keep us alert."
Ferrari are locked in a tight title battle with rivals McLaren and BMW Sauber, and Domenicali says he is unsure of how the fight will pan out over the remainder of the season.
He is confident, however, that the fact his team have two drivers involved in the contest at the front is not a disadvantage for his outfit.
"McLaren might have something up the sleeve in terms of performance, while BMW has shown some consistency in terms of results. As far as the drivers' championship is concerned there are four drivers on the list. And we are glad that two come from our team.
"I hear from time to time that it might be difficult to have two drivers fighting against each other and at the same time against the drivers of the other teams. But I don't agree at all.
"When you work in great harmony and transparency inside the team and having two drivers, who can fight for the title, I'd say it's a resource and not a handicap."

Kimi should have had much more points in the world championship, definitely. At least 15 or 20 points!!!:( I hope now on there won't be any mistakes or reliability problems. They should - Kimi and Ferrari - defend their titles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:punk::punk::punk:

That's so cool that you'll watch the Singapore Grand Prix in the theatre again! Imagine! They advertised that here in Hungary there will be some races in the cinema! But that will be only in Budapest, it's 150 kilometres far from my town. So I won't watch any of the races there. Though I would like to!

Have lots of fun and let's hope that you'll hear your national anthem in dolby surround (and it'll be in honour of Kimi of course)!:D

Coulthard quits F1

DAVID COULTHARD today confirmed he will retire from Formula One at the end of the season.
The 37-year-old from Twynholm in Scotland announced his decision ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix, which will be his 237th start.

The Red Bull Racing veteran made his debut with the Williams team in 1994 before joining McLaren two years later.

Coulthard remained with the Woking-based squad for nine seasons before joining Red Bull in 2005.

Coulthard, who will remain with Red Bull beyond the end of the season in a consultancy capacity, confirmed his decision in a statement circulated at Silverstone.

"I would like to announce today my decision to retire from racing in Formula One at the end of this season," the statement read.

"I will remain actively involved in the sport as a consultant to Red Bull Racing focusing on testing and development of the cars. I have an open mind as to whether or not I will compete again in the future, in some other form of motorsport, so I am definitely not hanging up my helmet.

"My decision to retire was taken earlier in the year and is based on a desire to stop while I am still competitive and enjoying the immense challenge that grand prix driving represents. I also have the desire to look for new challenges within the sport.

"The decision to make this announcement at the British GP should be an obvious one for all to understand, as I have achieved two of my 13 F1 victories at Silverstone and I am a member of the British Racing Drivers' Club, which hosts this event.

"I am proud of my work at Red Bull Racing and will continue to race with the same focus until the last lap in Brazil. Thereafter I will continue to help the team develop and move towards their ultimate goal of winning races."

Coulthard's break in Formula One came in the wake of Ayrton Senna's death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

The Scot was promoted from his test driving duties at Williams to replace the Brazilian, making his debut at the Spanish Grand Prix.

His first victory in Formula One came at the 1995 Portuguese Grand Prix, while 12 more wins followed with McLaren between 1996 and 2004 – including double wins at the British and Monte Carlo Grands Prix.

His final win came at the 2003 Australian Grand Prix. To date, Coulthard has scored 62 podiums and 533 championship points.

"Working with David has been an absolute pleasure and his contribution to the team over the past four seasons has been significant," said Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner.

"He is a consummate professional and I think that one of the key elements to the length of his career is the dedication he has applied and the commitment he has shown.

"He scored our first point, our first podium and was the first of our drivers to lead a grand prix. Within the team there is a huge amount of respect for David.

"His retirement brings to a close not just his career as a grand prix racing driver but also a chapter in the history of Formula One, if one considers the changes the sport has been through while he has been involved with it."

Another era will end then
IMO it's always sad when these "old" drivers quit, they have after all been there for so long time..

^^^It's sad but you have to except it! I've always liked David... I wish him all the best in his new life!

Kimi - fond memories of Silverstone

kimipressli8.jpg
One week after his day of testing at the home of English motor sport, Kimi Raikkonen was back in Silverstone for the start of the British Grand Prix weekend and his opening remarks when asked how he thought the ninth round of the series would go for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro were:

"I think we should have a strong car here and be competitive because I had a good feeling at the test here last week, even if I did not do so many laps. Silverstone is a nice circuit and a good place to come and I here there is going to be a very big crowd this weekend which will make a nice atmosphere. The fans here are very passionate about motor sport. I've heard the weather could include rain on Saturday and Sunday, but we should be competitive in all conditions. I raced here a lot in 2000 when I had a very strong season winning a lot in Formula Renault. I enjoyed my time here, racing on a lot of nice small tracks and I have fond memories and I like driving on this Silverstone track."

Raikkonen's second place finish in France a fortnight ago was remarkable considering the problem on his F2008, but he was sanguine about the failure.

"It was just an unlucky situation," he said. "A cracked exhaust pipe can happen at any time and it was just unfortunate that it happened when it did in the race. It was the first time anything like this has happened to me since I have been at Ferrari. It was a bit tricky at first, misfiring and lacking power, but the team helped me over the radio and lap by lap I got used to the situation and managed to deal with it, even though it got worse again towards the end. Fortunately, I had enough of a gap at that time to stay ahead of those behind me."

Even though the season will only reach its halfway point on Sunday, the media is already speculating about the final outcome.

"The championship situation has not changed since the last race, but there are still a lot of races left to go and we have seen already that the positions at the top of the order can change quickly as it is so close between a few of us, much closer than last year," said Raikkonen. "I still have a good chance to win, as I am only five points behind which means everything can change again in just one race. It is always important to win the races, but it depends what the others who are fighting for title will do, because, as long as I finish ahead of them, that is the main thing, even if I don't win on Sunday. But of course I will be trying to win."

The FIA press conference today featured the three British drivers and David Coulthard announced he would retire from driving at the end of this season. As a former team-mate at McLaren, Raikkonen was asked for an appreciation:

"David is a very nice guy and I enjoyed my time as team-mates," said the Finn. "Everyone comes to a point where he has to stop and David is 37 so I guess that time has come now. But he is still driving well so he has made the right decision in quitting while he is still competitive in an F1 car. Me retiring? I have a contract for next season!0"

Webber's opinion!!! :punk: :punk: Thanks for the great words Mark!

Red-Bull driver Mark Webber predicts that Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönen is starting the British GP as a favourite.

"McLaren had quite a good testweek at the track, but Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönen is normally very sharp in Silverstone and I think he is a difficult man to beat," Webber stated to BBC.

Räikkönen won the British GP last year. Webber believes, that McLaren's Lewis Hamilton's success depends crucially on the fact, that can the Englishman handle the expectations his home audience is having towards him.

"We have seen some mistakes from Lewis Hamilton and McLaren this season. Lewis has pressure at making good results, but he knows as well as the others that the best thing he can do is hop in the car and drive," Webber said.

Here's an amazing article about Kimi

smkimi05my8.jpg
Räikkönen, at that stage neck-and-neck with Hamilton in the championship with two wins each, walked over to his rival, and - instead of waving his fists, as other drivers might have done - calmly tapped the 23-year-old on the shoulder and helpfully pointed out the red light, as if saying to a child, 'If you see one of those, it means you have to stop.' Räikkönen later told me, 'I never get involved in arguments.' His unflappable style has won him the reputation as the coolest man in his sport.

Räikkönen, though, looks to the late James Hunt, the eccentric, charismatic British ace and budgerigar breeder whose world title in 1976 came three years before Räikkönen was born. Hunt lived life flat-out, loved tennis, played the piano, dated glamorous women and would often grace formal events in bare feet. Critics accused him of not taking motor racing seriously. Is the same true of Räikkönen? 'I don't have heroes,' he says, 'but Hunt had a different way about him. I think that that was a nice way. He did the good things he was supposed to do, but he just lived in a different way to many others.'

In January 2005 a story appeared about how Räikkönen stunned onlookers by cavorting with a lap dancer at a club in Mayfair, before launching into his own strip show. (Heikki Kulta, Finland's pre-eminent Formula One journalist and a family friend of Räikkönen, dismisses such incidents: 'Kimi is living like a normal Finn!') Ron Dennis, McLaren's team boss, failed to see the funny side and wrote to Räikkönen, upbraiding him. In life as in engineering, Dennis believes in zero tolerance. 'That's Ron's way,' Räikkönen laughs. 'Maybe he tries to push people to do a better job, but it didn't especially work for me. I don't need anybody pushing me. I know if I am doing the best I can or not.'

Räikkönen has always maintained that his personal life is no one's business, and has no bearing on his abilities as a racing driver. But he admits that things got 'quite bad' with McLaren. 'The newspapers tried to create a fight between me and the team. But now, maybe because I won the championship or because Ferrari leaves me to live how I want, it's better. I don't mind if people write things about me. I don't have anything that would hurt me enough to make me change my life. 'What I enjoy, and what they [Ferrari] respect,' he continues, 'is that as long as I do my work and they don't have anything to complain about, they leave my private life alone. It is not like there's someone behind my back all the time, asking, "What time do you get to sleep?"
Räikkönen's fans are drawn to his courage and raw talent. 'He's as brave as a lion, and on his day there is no one quicker,' says Kevin Garside, The Daily Telegraph's motor sport correspondent. Yet he remains less well loved than the boyish, personable Hamilton or the fiery Alonso. 'He could be more effusive,' Garside adds.
Räikkönen has failed to win Finland's equivalent of Sports Personality of the Year for the past three years - most recently losing out to a cross-country skier and a javelin champion. Not that he is unpopular at home. But in a nation that has produced two other Formula One world champions - Keke Rosberg and Mika Häkkinen - and many leading rally drivers, Räikkönen's achievements are perhaps taken for granted, even though Kulta insists that 'Kimi is by far the best racing driver Finland has ever produced.'
Räikkönen lives in Finland (just outside Helsinki) and Switzerland (in Wollerau near Zurich) with his wife of four years, Jenni Dahlman, a former fashion model and Miss Scandinavia, and their dogs, Ajax, an alsatian, and Pepe, a Jack Russell. His life seems modest by F1 standards. While rival drivers amass property portfolios and stock up on sports cars, yachts and jets, Räikkönen drives nothing more ostentatious than a Fiat 500. 'It's easy to park and nice to drive,' he says.
At home, he does the cooking: reindeer meat, pasta and 'a lot of rice and fish'. He shops for ingredients himself, carefully avoiding the supermarket crowds. After dark, he passes the long winter nights with friends, bonding over Smirnoff and karaoke.
'Kimi is extremely talented,' Bernie Ecclestone, who controls F1, tells me. 'The trouble is, he's not as dedicated as Ayrton Senna was, or as Lewis Hamilton is, for whom it is the end of the world if something goes wrong. I don't think Kimi is prepared to give up what Senna gave up; Senna would live in a one-bedroom flat in London in order to race. But Kimi is his own man, and that's that.'
Räikkönen advanced into Formula One via Formula Renault, a feeder tier. After only one year, in 2000 he became test driver to the Sauber F1 team. So impressed was the team boss, Peter Sauber, with Räikkönen's pace that he signed up the Finn as a full-time race driver, even though Räikkönen was the least experienced racer ever to compete in Formula One, with only 23 starts on his cv. He finished sixth in his debut race and 10th in his first world championship. Then he joined McLaren, but seemed dogged by bad luck.
'It's not luck,' Chris Dyer, Räikkönen's race engineer at Ferrari, says. 'There is no luck involved in building and running a reliable race car. The whole objective is to get rid of luck.'
Ferrari are confident it will deliver the goods at this weekend's British Grand Prix - Räikkönen won the race last year - although getting it to perform at its best is a complex business. Räikkönen's team of dedicated engineers measure the performance of both car and driver in hundreds of different ways. But no amount of data-crunching can replace feeling your way around a circuit by the seat of your pants. The team therefore relies on Räikkönen's own personal 'feedback'.
'Kimi is very good at identifying how to make the car go faster,' Dyer says. 'Sometimes it's not clear what the right solution is. We have simulation tools that can help us, but ultimately what counts is what happens on the track.'
Dyer worked with Michael Schumacher, who won five of his seven world titles with Ferrari. 'Kimi is more relaxed than Michael, and less concerned about technical details. If we turn up with a new part, Kimi will say, "Let's throw it on and see what happens"; Michael would have wanted to know what the simulation tests said. What you see is what you get with Kimi: he never plays games. But on the track, he is very strong mentally. He is not affected by pressure.'
I ask Räikkönen what he has learnt from Formula One. 'Be yourself,' he says. 'If you try to be someone else, it won't work. Whatever you do, you are not going to make everyone happy.' He sees no reason to change his working methods, which seem to be reaping such rewards. 'When you don't need to think too much, it is usually the right way,' he smiles. 'Sometimes when you have difficult races and you think about it and you try hard, it just gets worse and worse.''As long as I enjoy racing, I will keep doing it,' Räikkönen tells me. 'After that, I don't have any plans. One day I want to have a family and kids. But it is not the right time now. I am travelling so much. When you have kids, it would be nice to see them.'

No more pressure than in 2007

Kimi Raikkonen says he is not feeling any more pressure in the title fight this year than he did during his triumphant 2007 campaign.
With Formula One enjoying a close four-way title contest, there is an increased burden on all the drivers involved not to give away points that could prove so valuable at the end of the season.
Speaking at Silverstone, Raikkonen said he did not think the 2008 campaign was any more intense than last season's battle was.
"I think it has been more or less similar to last year," said the Finn. "Not much has changed from then. We had some bad races last year that we couldn't finish, and this year was the same thing.
"We've had two wins and quite good speed, like before. The only difference is that we are much closer this season in the points than we were last year. So hopefully it can help us and hopefully we can still come back and be up there when it really matters."
Ferrari are pre-event favourites for the British Grand Prix following Raikkonen's triumph in 2007, but Lewis Hamilton's quick time in testing last week has meant things could be more open than originally anticipated.
"Last year we were strong," said Raikkonen, who has had an engine change for this weekend's race. "But looking at the last test the McLaren seems to be strong. So I think it's going to be a close fight, and last year it was a close fight, and I don't see why it should be any different this year."
And after the disappointment of Magny-Cours, where a broken exhaust cost Raikkonen victory, he admits his focus at Silverstone is purely on gaining ground in the championship.
"It's always important to win the races but it also depends on what other people are doing. If you can finish ahead of them but are still not able to win then it's not such a bad thing. If we can't win then second is a good thing.
"Any time when we can finish in front of the person who is ahead in the championship is good for us. So there are many different things that can happen. For sure we will try to win, and we should have a good chance, so we'll see what we can do."

I like it that he's so calm but I'm so nervous that I bite my nails all the time!!! Kimi, don't do this to me!!!:tease:

According to www.formule1.com:
"The possibility of rain remains as cloudy and overcast weather is forecast for the Towcester area today and for the remainder of the weekend, with an ambient temperature high of 20 Celsius that will drop to 17 on Saturday before rising to 18 on raceday."
