Re: Your last MJ purchase
I bought Xscape on CD today at my local record store (standard 8 track version). I hadn't bought a Michael Jackson CD in 20 years. I was a fan as a kid, but never a hardcore fan. I grew up in the 80s. Everybody listened to MJ. I still have the old albums, but hadn't paid much attn to MJ over the last couple decades.
Anyway, I heard a song from Xscape at a restaurant the other day and really enjoyed it, so I decided to buy the album. I ended up loving the whole record. So I'm definitely going to go back and check out some of the CDs I've missed over the last 20 years.
Not sure if you need one but here's a rundown of MJ CDs for the last 20 years. At the bottom I included a short list of what I'd recommend for a more general fan like you
For proper studios albums, you'd be looking at 'HIStory' (1995), 'Blood on the Dance Floor' (1997) and 'Invincible' (2001) then! Special Editions of Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad and Dangerous came out in 2001, all but Dangerous with previously unreleased tracks included (I go into this more in the Anniversary Editions below).
The first posthumous album came out in 2010. It was called 'Michael' and was pretty controversial in the fan community due to three of the songs being rumoured to contain fake vocals (personally, I believe they are fake. Apart from those three tracks though, everything else is legit so don't worry about it). The second one was 'Xscape' and you got the standard edition. As you probably know, the deluxe edition has MJ's original demos of those 8 songs but since you're not as much of a hardcore fan, you might not be as interested. For the most part, both new and old versions are good imo.
As for Anniversary Editions, in 2008 'Thriller 25' was released. I don't really think it's that essential, I don't have it myself. The remixes on there aren't that great though I personally like Kanye West's remix of Billie Jean. There is a deluxe edition though that contains some demos/extra tracks that came out on the 2001 Special Edition which you might not have heard!
In 2012, 'Bad 25' was released and it also contains a number of tracks that came out on the 2001 Special Edition (Streetwalker is an MJ classic, you just
have to play it!). On top of that, it comes with six previously unreleased tracks and two tracks of 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' in Spanish and French. There are some more remixes on here, generally better than those in Thriller 25 (Nero's remix of Speed Demon is cool).
Off the Wall never had an anniversary edition, but the 2001 Special Edition has new artwork and a few new demos.
The first Live album came out in 2012. It was Michael Jackson performing at Wembley stadium in 1988 and released alongside Bad 25. Here's the problem though, the audio disc was exclusive to some deluxe edition of Bad 25 that cost ~$50 or something when it came out. Unfortunately, the live disc wasn't released standalone. You caaaaan technically buy it on iTunes if you look at 'The Indispensable Collection', but it's more expensive than a normal album.
There have been a few remix albums. In 1997, Blood on the Dance Floor came out with 5 brand new tracks and 8 remixes. I included it above in 'studio albums' because I consider it both since track-wise, almost half the album is new. The tracks on here are some of MJ's darkest and most mature/experimental, but they're really respected in the fan community. I like some of the remixes but most fans don't really care for them, they're pretty 90s. In 2011, 'Immortal' came out and it's essentially the soundtrack for the highly successful Cirque du Soleil show that travelled the world.
Compilations. Oh god, compilations galore in the last 20 years. Don't worry about most of them tbh, but 'The Ultimate Collection' (2004) has some pretty cool unreleased tracks on there (Sunset Drive, Cheater, Monkey Business). I'd just pick them up on iTunes or something.

I think that's the general rundown of MJ albums since 1995! If you're just a general fan... I'd recommend the rest of his studio albums along with Bad 25 and Xscape. Bad 25 has some really awesome unreleased material on the second disc and you already have Xscape. I wasn't really a big fan of 'Michael' but others here seem to be so maybe worth a look too! If you're still hungry for more material after that, try out some of the other stuff I mentioned here as a lot of it is catered towards more hardcore fans
