Xscape General Discussion

LNFSG is still holding out well in the singles chart considering its a posthumous release here in the UK at number 12, I think once it starts drifting off then BAM! we'll have another single release. So far for me the promotion for Xscape as been amazing, finally they have realised that they need to treat 'every' track that Michael left as a gem and they need to take them town and get the reconition they deserve. Sad to say but once they are gone they are gone. Yes they can been reworked but mainly once public have heard them one way or another they have no appetite for them again years later.

I think theres much more to come interms of Xscape...

Michael Jackson's estate managed to bring the late star back to life, sort of, with an unnerving onstage pseudo-hologram at May 18th's Billboard Music Awards – and that's just the beginning of its ambitious plans for his career, which could include as many as eight more albums culled from outtakes and repackaged material. "We got more surprises coming," says producer Rodney Jerkins, who worked on the newest posthumous release, Xscape.

See Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake Dance Through Video History

The only problem may be soft demand for "new" Jackson music. Despite decent reviews and a single that guest-starred Justin Timberlake, Xscape stalled at Number Two, with a big second-week drop. "After a while, a certain part of the audience stops listening," says Dan Beck, a former Epic Records exec who worked closely with Jackson.

Despite these hiccups, Jackson is the highest-grossing dead star in the world, as of 2013. The estate has earned $600 million since his death in 2009, thanks to lucrative projects such as Cirque du Soleil's Immortal tour and a reported $250 million deal with Sony Music for the new albums. "They've done a very good job – think of how dysfunctional it could be," Beck says. "We may not like particular elements of it, but Michael made the music, and they've kept that going."

Xscape was a major improvement over the estate's first posthumous album, 2010's Michael. The latest project took shape in early 2013, when Antonio "L.A." Reid, Epic's chairman, met with John Branca, Jackson's attorney and the estate's co-executor, to present a movie concept. Branca instead invited Reid, a veteran producer who worked with Jackson in the late Eighties, to comb the vaults. When Reid found "Love Never Felt So Good," a Thriller-era demo Jackson had written with crooner Paul Anka, he "realized he had elements of a hit album," says Scott Seviour, an Epic executive vice president. Reid asked several top
producers
to freshen up the songs and deputized Timbaland to oversee the project.

"Slave to the Rhythm," which Reid, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and their team wrote and produced circa 1991's Dangerous, was the foundation for Jackson's May 18th "performance" – a CGI King of Pop singing and moonwalking, made lifelike through a 19th-century illusion called Pepper's Ghost. The show divided Jackson's friends and family – his brother Jackie said it moved him to tears, but his makeup artist Karen Faye tweeted, "It is a criminal violation to enslave another person."

Fans should expect an even deeper excavation of the singer's vaults in the coming years. Estate reps wouldn't say how many songs are in usable form, but Jackson was famous for overrecording. "It was frequent that Michael would record songs and put them on the shelf," says Matt Forger, his longtime engineer. After Jackson's death, Tommy Mottola, Sony Music's former CEO, suggested the singer worked up 20 to 30 songs for each album; Epic's Seviour estimates "tens and twenties" are still in the vault. "I'm sure there are a few more great things out there," says Jerkins, "and, hopefully, we'll all have a chance to hear them."

This is from the June 19th, 2014 issue of Rolling Stone.

What a stupid article!

"his brother Jackie said it moved him to tears, but his makeup artist Karen Faye tweeted, "It is a criminal violation to enslave another person.""

Comparing his brother's opinion with his makeup artist's opinion! What a bunch of douchebags. They could have added his chef and his gardener's opinions too!

Yes and they copypaste Roger Friedmann. Maybe they should hire him. RF and RS fits together. Hopefully MJ-Fans will not buy their issue because of the nice MJ-Cover.

So after listening to the album about a million times, here is my ranking for the contemporized songs:

1 LNFSG
1 (tie) Chicago
1 (tie) LY
1 (tie) APWNN
1 (tie) STTR
1 (tie) DYKWYCA
1 (tie) BG
1 (tie) Xscape

All of these songs are off the hook!!! I am THIS close to rating the album as "classic"

Anyone who says this album has been "greatly" promoted, are lying to themselves. As far as the States go...Outside of the LNFSG debut and the BBMA's "VMJ" performance, and various website articles, this album has gotten minimal television and radio promotion. LNFSG, seems to be the only thing they're playing, and they mostly played Michael's first verse, then Timberlakes and leave out most of the song. The "Summer Never Felt So Good" commercial, has only been aired on urban networks, like BET, CENTR, & TVOne, like literally, that's it. As if black people are Michael's only fans. Don't understand why they've opted to go that route, but the commercial hasn't been aired outside of those three networks from what I can tell. And they're all owned by the same person & company, which is Viacom.

Time will tell, they still have a chance to really PROMOTE this album. But as of today, the album promotion on this side, hasn't been great.

I don't think we will get a new single until AFTER the soccer World Cup. Jeep has a nice commercial (the best of the bunch in my opinion) with a World Cup theme, this might bring some life back into LNFSG's radio plays. I think they shouldn't release a new single now and wait until after Workd cup.

And we never know Jeep might have added a clause forbidden a new single release until they are done with their promo, as not to take attention away.

ETA: I MEANT FOOTBALL...obviously. Soccer for us...football for most.

you may have a point. I really hope they play that commercial a lot during the World Cup.

They should concentrate on June, 25, not the World Cup. Second single has to be out before June, 25.

Regarding the "hologram": It's not there yet. Not good enough. It will never be Michael, but they'll get it damn close. Technology is improving all the time.

Michael was never shy to use body doubles/look alikes - Super Bowl, Who Is It video etc, adored magic and illusion and fully embraced new technologies. And he wanted to be immortal. To live on.

Michael planned for his work to be used after his death - it was money in the bank for his children and a way of being remembered. I don't believe for one second that the songs used on Xscape were chosen for any other reason than they had mostly been leaked previously. So there are many many years of MJ material to come. And if they treat it with the respect that they did on the Xscape project, the releases will continue to do well and continue to reach our to new audiences - for them to fall in love with Michael and his art and to discover the brilliance he released in his lifetime.

When it is respectful, honest and preserves his legacy, we should support it. Michael truly is Immortal.

I am sure they will...the NBA version is getting some good airtime now during NBA finals

a new single release at the height of football madness will be a total waste. This will fly completely under the radar, and MJ not being, every little thing needs maximum media coverage (newspapers, blogs, social media....) so it reaches as many people as possible.

I know little of FIFA World Cup, but even I know that, the world will be too busy discussing Football..not the estate latest release.

New single needed here in the US. APWNN or Chicago please. World Cup means nothing here I know it's big everywhere else but it's the NHL finals and NBA finals now. Both my kids play competitive soccer but it's just not popular with adults.

XScape has sold 729K so far...only 259K within the US. You do the math.

My vote: APWNN AFTER World Cup

It is possible that they will release Morales remixes and Jackie Jackson remix during the World Cup and around June, 25 and then 2nd single during the summer (after World Cup).

Not to get into this again but uhmm, using an impersonator and simply plastering a CGI Michael face on him, and then implying that it isn't an impersonator at all and instead full CGI, isn't exactly "respectful and honest".

Agreed. Besides I think if they try to push something around June 25 they will be accused of using that date for profit and it will probably rub a lot of people the wrong way. I think they should wait until next month.

Thats almost 36% of all sales being in the US, that's a good percentage.. So idk why the US always is the one singled out.. Sometimes I get it, but sometimes it needs to be given a rest.. We know US Market is not as strong as it could be for Michael but 36% of all sales from 1 country is impressive

I fail to see what the World Cup has to do with releasing a single? Release APWNN already.

World Cup is one of the biggest events in the world. USA don´t care much for soccer but the rest of the world do. And it´s televised everywhere, an ad there would be very good I think. Or maybe I´m wrong..

I'll never understand why they release album so late in some countries. That doesn't make any sense.
