Xscape General Discussion

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Did they know each other?

I have to say that it is kind of funny how this is all driving us crazy in a good way. I think Michael would get a kick out of that lol.

No I dont think so, and Mike would've favored Biggie over Tupac 'cus of their friendship. And keep in mind that in one interview, Tupac tried to bash on MJ for "spending" most of his money on Neverland and less for charity ;)

What's a better song ?

(I Like) The Way You Love Me or Love Never Felt So Good ?

That's hard.. I like the structure more on LNFSG but the melody for TWYLM is just too adorable lol. It's 50/50

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

I don't care who says what. Michael and Tupac on the same record. Yes.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

It could mean that there is an earlier version of escape than the one we have that features vocals from 2pac. It wouldn't be the first time, hence unbreakable. Atleast that's what i took from it
But will the 2Pac feature included in Xscape album? Maybe it's THE demo?

the writer said he only heard it from second playback. it could mean it was not in the first playback of the whole album

That's exactly what i was alluding to :)

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

Wait wait wait, what does this mean? Second playback? Title track? Does it mean that the Song Xscape has a remix version with 2Pac on the 2nd CD?

Probably just remix of new version that will be released on CD single of Xscape. It won't be on the album.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

the phone itself will be a demo version. It'll be operateable until 6/30/14.

Are you sure you are not talking about the megamixed phone with nanoparticles allowing to pixelize the volume to the max?

The writer didn't say anything that made it seem like this version was a completely new mix though. Which suggests that it's simply a secondary version of the Rodney Jerkins mix.

As Onir already wrote, the 2pac version is possibly a single candidate

I wouldn't call it a single candidate. I would call it one of the tracks on CD single. A remix of the album version.

Like Butterflies with Eve or You Rock My World with Jay-Z.

You need to read the full discussion. The website did announce that it had leaked. I contacted the user reporting the leak to ask him about it and he subsequently withdrew his claim. I, along with others, requested the site change the leak status back to 'unleaked'.

You can see an update on that page you linked to stating that it was a false alarm.

All of this was mentioned in this thread so it's worthwhile reading subsequent posts if you come to a discussion late.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

The prince is a coproducer and they need his say so to release any of his songs. Same situation as to why Bad 25 didn't have any Quincy Jones productions :)

I really don't understand how this can be the case. As far as I've always understood it, all you need is the permission of the publisher and as far as I know, all of Michael's songs are under his own publishing company.

Now if a producer has a sole copy of a piece of work that they are not giving up I'd think there would be ways to settle it through the legal system who is the rightful owner of the material.

I also love the fact that he acknowledged the " I'ts 10 pm do you know where your children are" part
Yeah, me too! And if you don't know about that, you're missing something about the inspiration for the chorus of DYKWYCA. For instance, my husband didn't get that reference at all because that wasn't a 'thing' here in Germany. The phrase didn't mean anything special to him. But I grew up in the U.S. in the 80's, and although I didn't know the origin of the saying (it was from much earlier even), I do remember it being everywhere somehow. Everyone knew "It's (10 o'clock) - do you know where your children are?" because it was on television and part of American culture. I think that's something important to know. When it was written we all knew that question and had heard it many times.... and Michael then took it to another level, putting the stark realities of one possible answer out there in your face. Like, where are your kids? This is serious, not just a catchphrase - and it could be very serious, so take care of them, love them, treat them right, listen and pay attention to them! You know?

Anyone who watched the evening news in the 1960s, '70s or '80s will likely remember this admonishment: "It's 10 p.m. Do you know where your children are?" First launched by a small ABC affiliate in upstate New York, the reprimand has since been co-opted by CNBC ("It's 4 o'clock ... Do you know where your money is?"), Monster.com ("It's 6 o'clock ... Do you know where your career is?") and even the Fox show The Simpsons (in one episode, Homer Simpson responds to his TV, "I told you last night — no!"). - http://content.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,1920454_1920455_1920452,00.html
Here's Debbie Allen asking the question before a newscast ;)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3e5I2Rrv5mM

P.S. I also just read that the phrase was probably originally inspired by the story Wee Willie Winkie, which only vaguely rings a bell for me. Will have to look that up, lol.

One thing that I find superfluous is that they keep claiming that Do You Know is about child abuse, when its core message is far from that. Verse one involves the parents coming home and finding their daughter missing; the chorus is a play on their obliviousness, asking if they have any idea where she is; verse two explains why she left; the bridge, to me, is the daughter's subconscious, where she is screaming for salvation; and verse three shows her fall to the ideology of Hollywood, realize that it's nothing like television had promised, and resort to prostitution to make money. It's a tragedy in song form, and could be considered a prelude to Hollywood Tonight (the only difference being the age of the girls in each song: twelve in DYKWYCA, fifteen in Hollywood).

I've come to realize that there is no reason why Do You Know shouldn't be released. Simply because Michael was accused of heinous activities that he was found not guilty of? Let's not forget that John Lennon admitted to beating women, was obsessive with Yoko Ono, was majorly unfaithful to her, treated his son Julian like dirt and admitted that Julian was the result of a drunken night out, yet you rarely hear about that. The media can focus on John's music and not his personal life. Do the same for Michael.

Right! The story and the message are plain as day. If people misinterpret it or use it to hate on him, THEY'RE the ones with the problem. I've been saying for months that I hope this song will be on the next album because I think it's great and it's also TIMELY. I'm so glad it's on Xscape and that no one wimped out because of the fear of uninformed jokes or something. (This is assuming *fingers crossed* that they haven't changed the story in the new mix, like when the "15" line was removed from HT.)

I know how with the 24-hour news cycle something's the big topic one minute and forgotten the next, but the topic of underage sex trafficking has been quite prominent in the past couple of years. For instance, CNN did a series of investigations on this, as well as other networks, Craigslist changed their practices for "escort" type ads because of pressure over this type of thing, and state attorneys general have been pushing for more action/legislation (for instance in the Oregon/Washington corner of the country where the 12 year old runaways on the street being lured by pimps is shockingly common.) I have a close relative who has worked in government on anti-human trafficking topics, particularly the type that's exactly what Michael is talking about in DYKWYCA, and it's a very serious and relevant issue... yesterday and today. :(

I do hope they point out the year the song was composed in the album notes and we as fans can help combat ignorance on the web by pointing out what the song is actually about to those who can't seem to or want to comprehend the facts. Anyone who actually LISTENS to it should quickly figure out it's not about allegations, smh.

They should put the years on the back cover of Deluxe so everyone can see when each song was recorded.

2Pac And Michael Jackson Would’ve Made Great Music Together
On the second playback of Xscape, after many of the attendees were already retrieving phones and bags from coat check, L.A. Reid unearthed a version of the title track with vocals from Tupac Shakur’s “Changes.” And believe it or not, it was epic. You can only imagine Mike and Makaveli dapping each other in upstairs in Thugz Mansion.

Could it be the attendees were listening to the deluxe cd and they thought it was the second playback but, actually the demo? Tupac's Changes is amazing by the way.

When Buxer and Prince handed over some of their material to the estate, the latter party rushed to copyright it and didn't bother to specify anything. Buxer is listed as cowriter on every song that's registered under his name, even when he had nothing to do with the writing (such is the case with Best of Joy).

I wouldn't entirely trust the copyright registries yet. Let's see how the album comes.

This is interesting. I cannot see Buxer having a hand in Best Of Joy at all. Can I assume he would receive more monies by having the song writing credit and that is why he gave himself the credit?

The Vibe article says Michael co-wrote Chicago (She Was Loving Me) but, Damien Shields wrote Rooney wrote the song without Michael’s input or updates. As it stands, the only song exclusively written by Michael is DYKWYCA which, not surprisingly, has an important message.

Michael Sings About Being Boyfriend #2
On “Chicago (She Was Lovin' Me),” MJ sings about being blindsided by a woman he’s dating. Turns out, o’girl has a husband and kids! Michael reportedly co-wrote pieces of the track. Go ahead and sip your tea.

During their flight home, from Los Angeles to New York, Mottola proposed that Rooney, who had been achieving huge success producing hits for a host of other artists, should produce a song with Michael.

Rooney jumped at the chance and got straight to work.

“So I got home, went in my house, and I created this song – ‘She Was Lovin’ Me’. I did the music at my house, then I brought the musical track to the Sony studios to work on the demo.”

....

Rooney was anxious about what the experience might be like with Jackson, and what his creative process was when recording other people’s songs.

“Sometimes guys like Marc Anthony will say they love the song, but, they wanna change this verse and they wanna change this melody.”

To Rooney’s surprise, Jackson came in the studio and expressed that he loved the demo exactly as it was, and did not want to make any changes.

“Rewind it. Rewind it. I like the way you phrase that. Hold on. Let me do that again. I wanna make sure I get the timing like you got it,” Rooney remembers Jackson saying.

“I was blown away. I’m like, ‘This is amazing!’ For this guy to accept and love every inch of my song, every part of it, you know, it was so surreal. It makes you emotional.”

He actually wasn't the one who registered the songs; the estate did. He handed in the songs and the estate simply marked him as cowriter on all of them, even when this wasn't the case. If he wanted to receive monies for the tracks, he would have requested to be marked as co-composer on their release.

And the Vibe article like several others simply guess on the credits. Michael had nothing to do with the writing or composure of She Was Loving Me. As you've said, the only song on the album that he wrote entirely on his own is Do You Know Where Your Children Are.

Re: News and discussion about new MJ album : Xscape, May 13, 2014.

What does that mean, exactly?

Well, Sony Music sent some cease and desist to Google

In response to a complaint we received under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act, we have removed 3 result(s) from this page. If you wish, you may read the DMCA complaint that caused the removal(s) at ChillingEffects.org.

DMCA (Copyright) Complaint to GoogleSent by: Sony Music / Epic Records / Estate of Michael Jackson
To: Google

The cease-and-desist or legal threat you requested is not yet available.

It is not really to Google, but the sites that Google displays when you do search for certain subject and those sites have infringing content (such as song xscape on their site)
It is faster and easier way for Sony and the estate to deal with media outlets who put leaked Xscape on sites.

Is Xscape with Tupac going to be bonus track?
I got an impression of that snippet of info, there is Xscape only with MJ's vocals, and then there is another one with Tupac?

It may be a bonus remix on the CD single if released as a single.

As for the Tupac's relationship with MJ, Michael tried to get Pac and Biggie together on this time around, as both of them shared a beef. Sadly he got only Biggie...

Speaking of google, sorry for the OT. Is there anything that can be done about the pictures that will be displayed of him when you search for "Michael Jackson"? In my country it looks like this: http://img5.fotos-hochladen.net/uploads/googlemjhmn9d1jg5i.jpg

I think it's just wrong for the mugshot to show up in these results.
