Where was that from?

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

That is an absolutely huge drop. All the other films increased in sales. This isn't looking good. I'm really hoping that the figures for the weekend will jump back up big time. I was hoping the film would beat the Hannah Montana 3D concert film but it looks like it might not even be able to match it.

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

I wouldn't get too worried yet. Many hardcore fans went to see it on Wednesday, myself included. It's mostly hardcore fans who saw it during the week, but casual MJ fans and most people in general don't go to see movies during the week. Hopefully, this weekend sales will pick up.

Maybe, I hope you are right :). What I don't quite understand is how MovieTickets and Fandango were reporting that so many shows are sold out and that there has been a huge increase in the purchase of tickets for the movie on their sites yet it doesn't seem to be reflecting in the box office takings. I hope that the sold out showings are the ones at the weekend.

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

I really hope the DVD isnt a limited edition or limited number of ....

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

I went 2 times so far. 1 time on Wednesday evening in a quite packed cinema here in Amsterdam (200+/270 seats sold out for 18:45 showing). For this one I bought a regular ticket online. Yesterday I bought a discount card including 6 movies, today I used to 1st one of the 6 for TII. Since I usually don't really go to the movies, I plan to use the other 5 on the card for TII too.

I might go with a friend sometimes or just go alone, but that will be 7 visits from me alone so far ;)

And likely I'll do 1 more when I'm in Belarus and bring my girlfriend along, so that will be 9 :D

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

Don't be too worried, people. It's number 1 second day in a row, safely ahead of 'Paranormal activity'. That's what counts. Its numbers for a weekday were still very big. I don't know what some were expecting for a second mid-week day.
Don't judge from the drop in relation to wednesday. wednesday was the premiere, yesterday was not. most of those who did not go to see it on wednesday and still want to see it will do so in the weekend.
Overall it's got 10 mil in the first two days -both within the week. If it makes another 20 in the weekend -which i believe it will-, it's record numbers for first week of such a movie. And in most sites with voting about which movie people want to go to in the weekend it's first.

So worry not, it's alright so far. And also, wait for the global numbers

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

I sort of think that the DVD sales will be higher than that of the movie sales. I think it's just that sort of thing, given it's rehearsals only and you can fit all these extra features. And I do think it'll do well on the weekend as Cinnamon234 said, mostly hardcore fans went during the week because not a lot of people go to the movies during the week...as far as I know...

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

I am starting to get very worried about the success of This Is It. Sources have confirmed to me that so far, the movie has done $11 million in the US in 2 days (WAY below what I thought it would do). If you include global sales, it has done just over $33 million so far.

Now we have Friday, Saturday, and Sunday left to determine the success of this movie. The movie is not doing nearly as good as everyone thought. Here in Canada for example, there are 7 sold out viewings today for This Is It (Friday). That's compared to the 200+ times it's playing. Not a good sign. I imagine the stats would be similar in the US. I would say the movie does $15 million in NA today.

Tomorrow is Halloween so don't expect any huge numbers. I'm going with $7 million. Then we have Sunday, which I think another $5-6 million is reasonable.

If you crunch all those numbers, This Is It will make $27-28 million this weekend in North America, taking its total to $38-39 million thus far. After the two weeks, I'd say just over $50 million in the US, and $150 million globally. That is decent, but way below expectations. If this was the case, it would not beat Miley Cyrus' record in the US.

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

Does anyone know what the worlwide box office figures for Thursday were? I'm expecting it to be about $10 million judging from the US takings for Thursday. It really does need to do well this weekend otherwise a lot of theatres will just pull the film before the 2 week run is over.

I know what you mean. It will be a bit embarassing if it doesn't manage to beat the Hannah Montana 3D film in the US especially since Michael is bigger than her and also because her film was released in a hell of a lot less screens.

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

Can we stop the drama is here for a while?
This Is It is a masterpiece and whoever doesn't watch it it's his loss not ours or the people that have already seen it. Watch the master at work, admire his brilliance and unmatched talent because there will NEVER be another Michael Jackson.

That's the impression i got from a lot of people. They are just not willing to watch this in the theaters..

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

That's probably true that many would rather wait to see it on DVD or for free on the internet. Also take into account that Halloween is usually not a big weekend for movies and the box office, but I still believe sales will pick up on the weekend and I believe all the positive reviews will help ultimately. Word of mouth is a powerful thing. As far as Miley goes, she has a different demographic. Tweens and teens love her and they are the one's who purchase albums and go to the movies more than any demographic I believe.

But again, I have to wonder if this is the case, why did Fandango and SONY report that the pre-sales for "This Is It" were huge? That's kinda weird that they're saying it's underperforming now.

But we'll see what happens. I would like for TII to do well though I wont lie, but if it doesn't, oh well, it's other people's loss 'cause it's a good film and worth going to see in theaters. It's not the same as watching it on DVD. I think many are missing out, but too bad for them. I saw it twice and i'll go see it again on the weekend. I loved the movie.

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

I was thinking after reading the last couple of pages that TII is really a niche movie. First, it doesn't exactly belong in a specific movie genre because it is part concert film and part documentary.

Next, Kenny has always, always said that this movie is FOR THE FANS. . . Michael's fans. Not everyone is interested in Michael Jackson, so they might pass up TII for a different movie this wknd.

Sony or AEG really dropped the ball when they were "predicting" certain sales figures and whatnot. They should have just let the movie do it's thing and not put all these expectations on it. Just like Sony had always put these expectations on Michael's album sales.

We've got to take into consideration that this movie was released in the middle of the week and during Halloween weekend, which is going to factor into the sales. It does suck big time that Halloween is on a wknd (Sat) night this year. I think a lot of people will go see this movie tonight and during the day over the weekend.

But I firmly believe that this movie will definitely make a lot more money than the Miley Cyrus concert movie because Michael Jackson is a global icon and Miley's movie was out in theaters for 15 or 16 weeks and made $70 million overall globally. Michael's is only going to be out for two weeks with a possible extension for the opportunity to make more box office money.

As for sold out shows, I believe the sold out shows are probably the wknd shows. Remember this movie is out for two weeks and fans were able to buy tickets for days all over two weeks.

For me, I am just really annoyed that Sony or AEG over-hyped their expectations for the movie and led people to believe that shows were sold-out, which made people think they can't get tickets. I feel like they set themselves and Michael up to be ridiculed (once again) if these expectations aren't met.

This movie is going to do well. . . but they should've just let things 'simmer'. LOL!

i could not agree more, michael likes to make things simmer

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

I really don't understand what some people expected this movie -or any movie- would do on a non-premiere thursday night. If it was any other movie we'd say nearly 4 mil is great; when it's Mike we find it humble.
I think some of us fall for the haters' game

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

any feedback on the global numbers for thursday?

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

I just cam back from seeing it here in Culver city and the cinema was full and the show before was full and the night show was sold out and it is only Friday night.

That's good to hear :)

I went 2 days ago, and there were about 40 people in the theatre. I haven't been to the movies in my town yet so I don't know how full it usually is.. but I'll say this, the whole theatre, candy shop, ticket sales desk was empty  Must have been a slow day anyways.

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

If this movie doesn't make number one, The media will tare this movie apart thats the sad part, they want to see it fail. Personally I feel like its only been out for 2 days, it came out on a wednsday, and alot of people work like myself during the week. I will be seeing the movie on the weekend, besides give the movie some time, i think it will do good.

Re: TII Box Office News (Merged)

I am hoping the majority of the sold out shows are for this weekend. For sure the movie won't sell out, but in the major cities like LA, SF, NY...I expect sell outs.

I want MJ to be #1 at the box office so bad...he would be genuinely happy and humble about the whole experience.

Let's hope for the best. I am going back tonight, because I really enjoyed the movie. And I get a kick out of seeing MJ in a theater. It is surreal when you think about it.
