Thriller 40th Anniversary - Songs Discussion

I hope this controversy about the sound quality of the demos and the lack of promotion, doesn't derail Thriller 40 too much.
It's been a pleasure to share the build up together

Hopefully when the album is released tomorrow they'll be more to discuss about the demo's themselves

Right, though everything is based on unofficial leaks with no quality guarantee. Who knows if people started with original thinking would have been different.
Anyhu, I don't have strong opinion either way (we can talk when they start releasing videos of live show HD  , maybe in next life!). I am just trying to maintain my enthusiasm for a release. I am going to stop now 😂.
Original thinking? Some demos still sound like crap and could have been handled a lot better. Not to mention the booklet issues and the poor written texts. Just because Starlight sounds a little bit better is doesn’t mean the album has suddenly become an example of perfection. I don't think you should invalidate people's criticism regarding the project by calling them unoriginal, that's beyond unfairness.

first listen:

- glad that What A Lovely Way To Go didnt make the Michael album. annoying hook. :p

- Can't Get Outta The Rain: First time iam hearing it and instantly hating it. hating the estate and TikTok-Branca even more for wasting space.

- Who Do You Know is fine. could be great if reworked

- The Toy is beautiful. but fades out too early.

- BTM: 2010 mix and Kai's Mix are much better. But interesting anyway how the OG version sounded.

=> clearly the estate randomly picked some songs, which are mediocre
the next posthumous album be better GREAT (i know thats impossible with this mindless estate + branca).

Whatever the source for Starlight is, it's just a slightly lower gen copy from the same tape source of the leak. It has the same issues.
I'll give you an example: just after the "DA DA... DA DA DA" it goes muffled for a second, then comes back. It's there on the leaked version. It's also here.

The DAT leak or the one from yesterday?

Having a lower quality than the DAT source...wtf

Both of them. If you listen to them side by side, they have the same issues.
So, both the DAT and their source are faulty as I don't think the master recording has the flaws. Dub issues on both sources, maybe?

Just wait until someone does a side by side comparison of Carousel from T40 and the other leaked/released carousel. There is a major difference in sound quality!
For untrained ears like me it would be interesting to see a video where each second or some lines are compared to the same parts in the leaks.

But what version is eventually better quality-wise in your opinion? or are they overall the same?
I will check a lossless rip of Disc 2 only tomorrow.

Maybe they got the DAT from MJJC and released it lol

As much as I don’t care for three of the four previously unreleased tracks, I don’t think I agree with this perspective. They chose two demos of songs we’ve already heard and have long been requesting, plus two never-before-heard songs, both of which are surprisingly unique for MJ as far as sound and style go. I wouldn’t say that their inclusion was random or nonsensical, even if we don’t care for them.

This is completely true, however, the transfer done by the estate (i guess it was done by them?) still sounds massively better than the leak we've got since decades, however the improvement is just that, a better transfer and having it properly mastered (although absurdly loud and limited and compressed and i better stop ranting or otherwise i'm gonna get even more mad at Brian Gardner.)

Also, after listening to BTM's demo... the vinyl sounds yall are hearing are just from the source, Mike just recorded the original vinyl from YMO and then added production over it, we can tell because literally every percussive instrument doesn't have those issues, and the background vocals from the original song are extremely low in volume.

I guess this is the only song Michael's entire discography that nobody like. Actually hates.

And congratulation btw. You have passed the CGOTR-test may call yourself from now on a true fan of MJ.😁

Hope you won't murder me, but I think it belongs here: the Human Nature 7" edit from the deluxe digital version is the true one with the alt bridge. FINALLY!
For anyone that is interested, the version found in The Essential Michael Jackson from HDTracks is also the true 7" edit. (even though it's called "album version" it is not.)
It is also unmastered and keeps all the dynamics, sounds beautiful.

That makes total sense, but I still think they could’ve done a better cleanup job.

Whats the difference to the album Version of Human Nature?

I like it only not as an individual track. It would have been fun in the studio for sure, maybe even on stage as a curtain call. I'm a big you can't win fan though maybe that helps, very funky song, especially the version that's on the wiz soundtrack.

You Can't Win is a great song. I love the Ultimate Collection version.

Can't Get Out of the Rain is such a silly entity though. It barely gets by on technicality.

Just finished listening to the 24bit hi-res version.
I'm an audiophile, but not an expert. So, here are my considerations which only reflect my opinion and aren't absolute facts:

- Their source for Starlight must be closer to the "master" than the leaked DAT, but I'd say not that much. The remaster really benefited it in some aspects. The hi-res version does sound better than the AIFF files. I wonder why are the vocals so damaged.

- Got the Hots, Carousel and Sunset Driver are not as loud as their previous (re)masters, but after watching the waveforms, it looks like a stronger limiter to compensate and avoid clipping?
Can't Get Outta the Rain also, but the '08 remaster doesn't seem as compressed, but much louder. Still, for those of you (if you exist) who like this track, the best version is still from the 7" single of The Girl Is Mine.
The DAT leak of Carousel remains the best sounding version, as it seems they turned down the bottom-end in this remaster, making it lack the punch.

- She's Trouble is a banger and it explains why it was once intended to be on the album. A lovely upgrade to the old LQ leak. Remaster is fine, could be worse.

- What A Lovely Way To Go and What Do You Know are real highlights to me.
While Lovely Way may have some silly lyrics, I vibe with the flow and the song feels good to me.
As for WDYK, this thing has to be originated during Triumph, it feels like it and I swear I hear the brothers in the bg vocals. Absolutely loved it and there's no missing the infamously famous LinnDrum preset.

I understand a lot of people are really pissed with this and I do have complaints myself, but it's a decent release. If I'm being honest, I was expecting way worse. Still, they have a long way to go for a proper release.

This is a great analysis. Thank you!

Do not waste your money on this lol. It is awful. The estate clearly have no access to anything decent. Nor do they care . Hence why we sorta saved by the incredible Chicago 45 leak. Yeah we knew disc 2 were full of demos but whoever was in "charge " of this "project" cannot have had any connection to MJ , oh yeah i forgot that was the Jacksons themselves. It's awful. Not as bad as the "Michael " album but a very close second

The song timelines do not make any sense either . some of them are from from the mid 70s. They have clearly oddly messed about with Best Of Joy and yes i know it is the original version. However why not give us a different take on these songs ? Thank God for Chicago 45 as i say it has at least helped dampen the blow , again no help from the estate on that side.
