This is it: The Music (Live Vocals, Tracklist Discussion) MERGED

What you need to understand is that the press cant just make stuff up. You can just quote someone unless they actually said that. So the guy from Sony must have made that statement otherwise it woudlnt have been in the article.

The press can and do do that, unfortunatly.

Sony spokesman Jim Kennedy says, "In order to fulfil Michael's vision for his fans and his children… the filmmakers had to incorporate some pre-existing materials, including vocals, where the rehearsal footage audio was incomplete and/or inaudible. In addition, usage of master recordings (such as Earth Song) was credited in the end titles."

I would like to clarify that "incorporate some pre-existing materials, including vocals, where the rehearsal footage audio was incomplete and/or inaudible. " is not equivalent to lip synching or miming. It sounds to me like he sang the songs live but the audio wasn't good enough on the recordings for all of Earth Song so they used old recordings to fill in. Which makes perfect sense since they weren't recording the rehersals planning to make a movie.

Personally I thought the Earth Song falsetto on the rig was the only *blatently* obvious case of dubbing - and that was only because I'd heard the unreleased demo... general public would just think it clearly wasn't the album track, which is what they were intending us to think.

There are still a LOT of live vocals, some FULLY LIVE songs (and they sound amazing), so we certainly can't complain.

an obvious indicative TDCAU was mimed is background voices wich are all Michael's

Really, all you have to do is read the credits at the end of the movie. They credit where recordings are used.

I really wasn't expecting that much. He sang songs he'd NEVER sang live before:

WBSS - 100% live, no doubt
Speechless - 100% live, no doubt
Jam - 98% mimed, 2% live
TDCAU - mimed
Human Nature - 100% live, no doubt
Smooth Criminal - mimed verses, live bridge and chorus
TWYMMF - live intro, mimed verse and chorus, live ad-libs
IJCSLY - 100% live (probably my favourite)
J5 medley - 100% live (incredible vocals at the end of I'll Be There)
Black or White - 100% live (and sounds awesome)
Beat It - 100% live (his voice sounds so strong on this)
Billie Jean - lip-synched demo, live ad-libs
Earth Song - mostly lip-synched, occasional live lines
MITM - mostly lip-synched, occasional live lines

I can totally see why everyone was raving about the ending of IJCSLY - that was old skool black soul right there. Did anyone else notice how he picked the words apart for some lines? That was so cool.

Even most of Smooth Criminal was live apart from the first verse...

Arty will be delighted.

I agree...Except I believe...

TWYMMF was 100% live

Jam and SC was 98% live

and TDCAU was half and half

Earth Song was live except for the "What About Us" chorus

Thriller had the least live parts

Any parts that weren't live were the result of editing(so even those part could've been live).

I firmly believe the cinema would've take an over-timed film(they got rules of how long it must be) so they had to settle with less then ideal footage. But come DVD time that shold change!

I was also very pleasantly surprised there was so much live singing in the movie.

I'm pretty sure many of you have seen those youtube videos that were "secretly" recorded from outside the forum/staples during the rehearsals by some fans. I must say I easpecially love this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utVeYvctbO8&NR=1), The Way You Make Me Feel. This video shows how he's not singing all the parts (since it's just rehearsal), but the parts he does sing, oh boy, he sounds so good. I thinks it's so interesting to hear all these different versions of the songs he rehearsed, not just the one they chose to put into the movie. I would be so happy if they included these other rehearsal versions in the dvd/blu-ray, but bet that's not gonna happen. Anyway, apparently he mostly sang TWYMMF vocals like we hear in this secret video (the slow soul-type intro, some words here and there, and then more live vocals towards the end) and then they added the missing vocals (filled the gaps) later on probably.
