The Michael Jackson Chart Watch

So apparently the beatles sold 200 million records from 1960 to 1980. But claims are made now for 600 million, yet media outlets & wikipedia to nothing about this while over analyzing mj’s sales. Claiming they are the inflated. But i’m old enough to remember when he was alive everyone called him the best selling artist of all time. Now suddenly his sales have mysteriously dropped according to the press.
This makes no sense to me

I personally think that sales numbers of all artists are hugely inflated, especially those of Elvis, The Beatles and our very own Michael. Their importance is also slightly overstated. I think it is more important that an artist keeps getting played on the radio. Radio still reaches hundreds of millions of people worldwide on a daily basis.

Well they okay everything on the radio, all you have to do is listen to it. Pretty sure I've even heard Gary Glitter once.

But it's not like they play oldies on modern pop radio anyway. Different niches are just that.

Sony is lazy as fuck and refuses to update sales and most of his are massively outdated, roughly 50% of his sales are unaccounted for
Elvis Presley - The Guardian: 260,000,000 (1977: Date of death), The Irish Times: 100 Million sold since death, so 360 million total (1997)
Elvis roughly sold up to 400 million if we are being generous
Now for Michael Jackson this comes from MJJ Source and MJ.INF two fan sites that cataloged his sales
MJJ Source *Michael's official news site (2005) - 160 to 165 milion ALBUMS sold strictly from Bad, Dangerous, History, Thriller, Off the Wall, Blood on the Dance Floor, Invincible and Number Ones, excluding compliation albums and misc albums. Single sales weren't shown but reports from fans were for 30 million singles sold during 1991 to 2001 so we can estimate at least 50 million singles
MJinfo (Spring 2007) - 40 Million singles sold with the Jackson 5 and 48 million albums sold with the Jackson 5, totalling 84 million records. 13 Million singles sold under Motown and 20 million albums totalling 33 million records in Motown (Berry Gordy didn't certify any sales from 1971 to 1977)
Up to 2007 he sold 322 million records
Michael Jackson has sold an estimated 35 million albums worldwide since his death one year ago according to Billboard — an unprecedented response to a musician's passing. Add in 12.9 million track downloads in the U.S over the past year, along with 26.5 million in international downloads, and that is
another £23 million. Then there is about £1.5 million in ringtone sales in America, another three million globally earning £3.3 million, with 1 million albums sold from the Jackson 5 = 80 million records sold in 2009
The estate has said that his U.S. album sales are only 30% of global album sales, and Billboard estimates the artist’s U.S. track sales at 48% of global sales, which extrapolates to total global album sales of 2.7 million units and 5.8 million track sales in 2012. To date in 2013, Jackson’s 482,000 U.S. album sales (as of Oct. 27) and 1.9 million in track sales extrapolates to a global 1.6 million album units and nearly 4 million track sales. In 2010: 3.7 million tracks and 2.1 million albums. Jackson's 2010 album sales in the united states were bolstered by the release of his posthumous studio set “Michael
From 2009 to 2013 he sold 100 million records. So up until 2013 he's at 430 million, so today he would be around 500 million due to streaming etc. The Beatles would be slightly higher then that because they released so many albums compared to him. So in actuality he is the most successful artist.

Some thoughts:

Beatles only nr 8 😲
2pac nr 3 (guessing this is the impact following the news of his murder)
6 rock acts, so rock is not death 🤭

Well, I did tell you but you wouldn't listen. :ROFLMAO:

Although, I don't count The Beatles as rock but, whatever ... 🤷‍♀️

Tupac - Allen Hughes has just done a documentary series about him so maybe that's pushing his figures.

No the beatles are somewhere in the middle. I think abbey road is their most rock album

It's old and people only like the old stuff lol.
See @zinniabooklover it might be dead 😀
Sorry, finally caught up!

No, f&m it's not dead. I gave you a bunch of names of current rock bands when we did this before. I don't care if those bands aren't showing up on Spotify. It's hard for new artists to get decent streaming figures bc of the sheer volume of stuff released every year and, yeah, for sure, people do like to stay in their comfort zone. But the bands are out there. :)

It's easier than it's ever been to get your music out there but it's probably harder to build up enough interest to actually make some money.

Don't even get me started on the royalty thing. It's a scandal. :(

Michael Jackson makes a comeback on the Billboard charts this week, but it's not due to any new releases from his estate. Instead, the late superstar's return is attributed to the enduring popularity of one of his most iconic singles, which has become an annual sensation for the singer.

Jackson's timeless single "Thriller" reclaims its spot on a couple of Billboard charts this week, and this resurgence may just be the beginning of its seasonal success. Each October, "Thriller" resurfaces on various rankings, as it is a beloved favorite among millions of Americans to set the Halloween mood. The track experiences a surge in sales on iTunes and AmazonAMZN +1%, and many radio stations across the country put it back into regular rotation.

In the current week, "Thriller" ascends on the R&B Digital Song Sales chart, which compiles the bestselling R&B-only tracks in America. The song now sits at No. 11 on this week's ranking, up from its previous position at No. 15.

The same classic track also makes its triumphant return to the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart. "Thriller" re-enters at No. 21 on the 25-position list, which features the bestselling cuts in the U.S. classified as rap, hip-hop or R&B by Billboard.

"Thriller" has previously claimed the top spot on both the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales and R&B Digital Song Sales charts. As Halloween approaches, there's a strong likelihood that it will once again approach the summit on both of these charts, if not actually reclaim the No. 1 position. The song's impressive future sales may enable it to reappear on the all-genre Digital Song Sales chart in the near future and, perhaps, even make a return to the Hot 100, although the latter is a more challenging achievement.

Michael Jackson dominated the yearly Joe’s Top 2000 chart voted by radio listeners again In Belgium. He got 29 entries this year which is combined with Jackson 5 work the most of the entire list. Just solo he is 2nd behind Abba (25 for 26 entries).
The highest placings are unsurprisingly for billie jean and thriller at nrs 30 and 43 respectively.
Liberian girl was a newcomer at the lower end of the chart and will you be there gained a re entry after a couple of years of absence.

Did the grunt work, here's the most up-to date best selling artists of all time. The comprehensive list will be posted in the following post, this is long

Missing 40 million certifications: 25 million digital, 10 million in Brazil and 5 million in Japan. Fans compiled all certifications and directly sent to Sony & the Estate in 2022 which have not been updated
Total Record Sales: 502,266,000 Solo / 596,306,000 total
The Beatles
Chartmasters: 160,650,000 + 203,392,000 + 116,080,000 + 35,230,000 + 19,630,000 = 534,982,000

Best selling artists of all time (see above method)

  1. Michael Jackson - 562,266,000 (662 million with Jackson's / Jackson 5)
  2. The Beatles - 534,982,000
  3. Elvis Presley - 447,854,000
  4. Queen - 365,808,000
  5. Madonna - 336,682,000
  6. The Rolling Stones - 334,672,000
  7. Pink Floyd - 264,521,000
Edit: This is inaccurate, based on fans who sent requests for re-certifications, he's behind on 56 million certifications in the US, total uncertified sales units is over 100 million including Brazil, France, Japan, Canada, Germany, and U.K. Meaning the actual total is 562 million, which would make him #1 in the United States and #1 worldwide

- The Essential Michael Jackson has sold 125,200 units in the UK at the end of the 3rd quarter of 2023.
are you sure? This is a lot... not complaining though

It’s a shame we have no actual sales figures from regions outside UK and US.

It doesn’t seem unlikely that both albums sells a million copies worldwide a year. I assume NumberOnes is up there as well
