The Legend Lives On - Official Cirque du Soleil 'Immortal World Tour' Discussion

Forever I was going to tell you to ask an older person to accompany you to the venue, but since you say your parents' NO is final, then I guess that would not work either. I remember, I had friends who had parents like yours when I was a teen, and since my parents trusted me, my friends' parents would allow them to attend a function if I went too. I guess that would not work for you. I cannot understand the religious part, though, is Cirque seen as a satanic group or something?

Try to help the situation by not telling them all your Michael ideas, thoughts and social networking. If they think your interest in him is loosing its intensity, then maybe they will be less strict with you. Sometimes as humans, we have to keep some things to ourselves to maintain peace. Also remember that the show will be in residency in Vegas soon, and by that time your situation will change.

About that blog above, that is why it is good to experience certain things oneself. Why did the blogger make it seem as though Cirque wanted to compete with Michael's TII show or that the Immortal show was going to be like the TII show? I never thought there was going to be a connection, and I hope many fans are not going to see Immortal thinking that. Next, unlike the blogger, I did like the childhood moments in the show. Sure, certain things were not perfect, but I wish the person would simple look at the Cirque for what it is and try not to make a competition between Immortal and Michael's TII production. This is just my opinion, so I expect others will have a different take on this.

They have given me "many" reasons (as they say) to convince me that "everything is wrong" with me going to the show. First of all, although the venue isn't far (30-45 minutes away in light traffic), the area it is being held in is downtown...meaning it's kind of sketchy/dangerous...but YOU KNOW WHAT?! THOUSANDS of people go down there to see all kinds of shows ALL THE FREAKING TIME. We also go to downtown many times FOR VARIOUS reasons & I've been there MANY times, so I don't understand what the issue is. The stadium itself (JUST like the Staples Center) is grand & amazing, but the area around it is still developing, that's all. So again, okay, there might be some sketchy people down there, but they won't be AT the show itself (they'll be the random hobos OUTSIDE of at least a 2 mile radius from the building), so if I go there ONLY TO SEE THE SHOW, everything should be FINE, just like it is EVERY SINGLE TIME we or THOUSANDS of other people go. I have stressed many times that there is no immediate danger whatsoever, it's just that their minds pick up the most unlikely scenarios ever & hold them as the reasons for why I cannot go.

Second of all, I'm 16 years old. I have my driver's license, I have a car. Yet, I cannot drive my car (their rules) unless one of them is in the passenger seat. If they will not even let me drive to school, it is completely out of the question to ask them to let me drive myself 45 minutes away. Okay, so how about they drive me? Well, they both work on the Tuesday/Wednesday Cirque is coming to town. Tuesday/Wednesday are also in the middle of the week, meaning they'll be school nights/days. OKAY, but my schedule is completely clear for those two days & I'm absolutely sure there will be no heavy workload. Show starts at 8, I get home at 3. BAM, I've got 5 hours to finish whatever, which is plenty of time. Plus, I've gone to various band performances where I have returned after midnight on a school night...so that doesn't make any sense either - I go to sleep around 12-1 every night anyway. I wouldn't be going alone at all - I've got friends who want to go & my brother and sister are always captivated by Mike, so that's not an issue either.

They've given me more reasons & have managed to tie religion (their chief reason) into the argument as well. BUT they all sound equally bogus. I understand their concern for my safety, but THEY KNOW & I KNOW that they are exaggerating a NON-ISSUE & turning it into an ISSUE just to prevent me from going. Oh & one one more thing. They basically detest my love for Michael Jackson. They're tired of my "obsession" with him. Yes, they've bought me almost anything MJ-related I have ever asked for, but now they won't. They want me to "move on". They say enough is enough. They think he has distracted me from my studies (which he has kinda, I mean I should be doing homework right now, but you know WHAT? Besides the fact that Michael resides in my head 24/7, I've gotta 4.35 GPA at the moment, so I see no argument there!).

All possibilities of me going to Cirque have pretty much ended. I know the answer is no, it'll always be no (to this). They're wonderful parents, they've always given me what I've wanted, and they've let their love spoil me (and my siblings)...which is probably why I'm taking this so hard, because I hardly ever get a "no" from them when I ask them for something. Which is really quite a pity, because out of everything I've ever asked for, this probably ranks in the top 3 of "I REALLY WANT IT". I know I have pretty much exhausted this discussion with them & do not want to piss them off any further. I've basically been asking them for this since March of 2011, and although they were more open to letting me go back then, they've been pretty consistent in saying NO from Fall 2011 to now. I don't expect a miracle to happen either. If it was to happen, it would have happened by now. I entered a local contest that was giving away 7 PAIRS of tickets. I entered every single day for 2 weeks. Nothing. Going without telling them or behind their backs is completely out of the question. They'd never trust me again.

Now I'm just at the final stage of convincing myself that it isn't such a big deal & that I won't miss out on much for not going. So far, I'm failing miserably. I mean his own kids, his own family, his friends, his fans from all around the world watched this VERY show...IT MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING COMPLETELY AMAZING AND OUT OF THIS WORLD Aaaaaaaaaand ooohhhh here I go again. Ughh...see, I can't do this. :(

I know this is probably hard to connect with considering most of you all are adults...but I'd be grateful to anyone who can make me feel better about this stupid & unnecessary mess. On top of all this, I've been feeling really down/depressed about Michael lately. It's a different kind of sadness...not so much about missing him, but more about feeling sorry for him & the horrid trials and tribulations he had to go through. I keep thinking of his life as a tragedy & a sad story with a sad ending...and I know there's probably something wrong with that. Ugh Michael, why do you always have to exhaust some part of me? I'm tired. I want to feel happy when I think of you, but I can't.
you poor thing! i completely understand everything you've said and i understand how religion can be tied to morals and therefore its tied to pretty much anything. dont let this ruin your relationship with your parents tho....we're all here for you hunny. is there any chance their trying to suprise you with tickets?? i think your best option is to set your mind on going to the permanent one in a few years and try to stop thinking about this one as much as possible. sorry bubba

Dear ForeverKOP. I feel for you, I really do. Your parents sound like good guys though in most other things and I am sure they have your best interests at heart even though you probably don't feel that way now. The only light at the end of the tunnel is that this show will probably run for 3 years and maybe even longer so you will be older then and able to do what you choose to do. I truly believe you will see it eventually. It's hard being 16, not a child but not yet a woman. Try and just be cool about it. Who knows, if you don't mention it for a while your parents might actually suggest it to you. Keep the faith. x

I became a fan when I was 13, so I know how it feels. At first all I wanted to do was to talk to everyone about Michael and express how important he is to me. After a sort while, that turned against me. Everyone, including my mother, were accusing me of being obsessed, of dedicating all my time to him and they demanded that I stopped it. I ceased talking about him since then even though there were times that I wanted to shout out how much I love and adore him and how happy he makes me feel. I never set Michael aside for whatever reason. I know that my parents were concerned just like yours, but there are some boundaries that I didn't permit anyone to cross. Their over protectiveness was and always is out of interest surely but just like I don't interfere with everybody's source of happiness I request the same. I keep Michael to myself and I talk to fellow fans that can relate. Twenty years have passed since I became a fan and having Michael in my life is the greatest blessing. I feel lucky and blessed. My friendly advice to you is to not talk about Michael to anyone other than people that can understand your feelings and if one day you decide to stop being a fan you should think carefully and do it because YOU want to not because other people want you, otherwise you will never be free to make your own decisions and mistakes.

Ben Sumner of Mix 96 had a chance to check out the Cirque-Michael Jackson show in Vegas! Take a look at this video:

So now right now Thriller just ended and we're in a 20 minute intermission (even tho I was told on here that there were no intermissions)...

So far the show is awesome!!

They took out "Shake Your Body" and moved up the J5 Medley in its place (smart move).. They shortened "Ben" to barely a minute starting it at "Ben most people would turn you away..." (another smart move)...

Love it so far!!!

Ok just I got home a little while ago from the show..

I loved it! It was awesome!

However we didn't have the best seats (at all!) and were really high and really far ? but regardless we enjoyed every bit of it..

Like I said in my last post there were some changes to the first half (read above), but I think it definitely tightened the show up and gave it a much continuous pace...

There was in fact a 20 minute intermission.. I told everyone I went with that there wasn't going to be a break and that they all needed to use the restroom before the show.. Someone on here said there wasn't one so that's what I was going by.. It was a 20 minute intermission right after Thriller..

In the 2nd half they began with YANA but only used the chorus and went straight into IJCSLY.. Then the glove and loafers (no fedora)... Also I forgot about Childhood opener.. I was hoping the young Michael animatronic would be there but it was just balloon holding a dangling heart.. If u didn't know about the Michael robot in the hot air balloon basket then it was unnoticeable but I noticed (oh well).. I'm sure it's being saved now for the permanent show in Vegas..

Jam was a little underwhelming but I still liked it..

I liked Scream a lot more than I thought I would..

I fell like something was missing from Earth Song.. As in everything went perfectly but it also felt like it should have been bigger than it was..

No Gone Too Soon either.. My wife said they should've at least included a minute of it somewhere and I agree.. Also I would've loved them to include Dirty Diana somewhere in the show.. Even if it was like 15 seconds during Dangerous somehow (idk)..

I noticed that all the songs they play before the show starts are all songs that are NOT included in the show (anywhere)..

Everything else I didn't mention was amazing!!!!!!!!

Just be sure to actually get seats that have a great view of everything! The top level is not what u wanna do.. Try for lower level in the middle or far sides (if u can afford it)..

I can't wait for a blu-ray or the resident show next year!!

lol sorry, that was me . There wasn't an intermission when I went to see the 10pm show in Las Vegas, but I guess thats not the case for all the shows. Glad you enjoyed the show though! :)

There was no intermission in Vegas because they were doing 2 shows a night, but MOST cities (not all depending on how late the show starts) gets an intermission.

Haha!No worries.. I felt kinda dumb when the announcer came on and said there would be a 20 minutes intermission but we had a good laugh about it after ?

Me to there was not intermission when I went. It seems they are changing things around, so people need to take that into consideration when they look at what other fans write about their experiences.

I went to the first US show and I really enjoyed it. Even though they had a problem with the giving tree and it was not completely set up. I'm really happy I got to go. A friend of mine (who loves MJ just as much as I do,) drove all the way from Georgia, to Ohio (where I live,) to Michigan, to see the show. We had a really good time! I'm sad it's the closest I will ever come to seeing a Michael Jackson concert, but I think they did him justice. Hopefully I will be going down to Atlanta to see the show again this summer. I'm excited to see how much they have improved now that they have been doing the show for some time. :D

Also I wanted to add that during the 30 minute intermission there was an older couple probably in their 60s or early 70s that sat next to us and they asked us "do u think the second half will be more like its been or do think there will be more acrobatics like other Cirque shows?" and I told em it definitely more of a concert feel but more dancing still with more acrobatics then the first half...

And they just up n left!

Lol!

I was like ok they prolly wanted to leave once they saw dangerous!

Oh well...

UK! What arena do you think they would go to if they went to England?

UK! What arena do you think they would go to if they went to England?

Isn't O2 the best one? It's seems an obvious choice even with the sad MJ-connection.

MJ would get his O2 shows.... This will be eery. His presence is felt so profoundly, i can only imagine how moving it'll feel to be at the O2.

[h=1]Jamie King has got the moves[/h][h=2]From a young age, he studied Michael Jackson's steps, a legacy he preserves in 'The Immortal.'[/h]

Born in Verona, Wis., to a white teenage mom and a black father who left when he was 5, King describes a people-pleasing childhood in which he felt the pain of his mother's struggles and tried his best to ease the situation. "I learned to 'produce' early," he says. By high school, he worked afternoons and weekends and summers: making pizzas, tinting car windows, cleaning offices, watering greenhouses.

At the same time, identifying powerfully with '80s pop stars (he rotated his outfits at school, "one week Michael, one week Prince"), King danced privately and obsessively. On a foundation of self-taught MTV video reenactments in his basement, King's storybook public dance career took off at age 16 with a fast succession of school scholarships and contest wins, which led to a Los Angeles audition for Michael Jackson that landed him the single open slot for a male dancer on the 1992-93 "Dangerous" world tour. Within weeks, King was rehearsing Jackson's tight, skidding moves from "Beat It" and head-bobbing syncopations from "Smooth Criminal" with the master himself.

King followed his curiosity, "absorbing everything." After the 17-month Jackson tour, King was comfortable with and interested in all aspects of stage production. Working with musical directors, lighting and stage designers, wardrobe, jumbo screens, pyrotechnics, moving sets, he wanted to choreograph it all, and honed his craft working for Prince for several years. Then in 1999, garnering attention for his carnivalesque design for Ricky Martin's Grammy Awards appearance, King was hired to direct the singer's first U.S. tour. After Madonna caught Martin's show one night, King explains, she asked him to help her launch her first tour after an eight-year hiatus. And the rest — disco-ball entrances, mechanical horses, roller-skate mania — is history.

"From when the lights go down, or when the lights come on, to when the screens open or the screens come up, and how that moves with the set pieces coming on or the dancers arriving, I see it all in a dance way," King explains. He sips an iced tea between words. "One of my biggest dislikes is when those elements are not working together. I get very uncomfortable. I like it all to move and flow together and make sense, like theater."

Cirque du Soleil spokesman Maxime Charbonneau says King's background with rock tours and Jackson himself made him the easy choice to help the entertainment company in its first attempt to fill 10,000-seat arenas (and not wall off portions to retain intimacy). For King, who was used to working so incisively as to move from a shoe box concept to world tour in several months, Cirque's initial open-ended creative period was unsettling. "They like to just throw things at you left and right and see what you respond to," King explains. "They say it's 'feeding' — they like to 'feed' you and wait while you chew on it."

Using 65 songs, 30 dancers, 25 acrobats, 10 musicians and a 10-choreographer team, King conceived and directed "The Immortal" to center on a place (Neverland Ranch, which he visited early on) rather than his usual artist-focused orientation. Jackson is represented by master tracks of his singing voice, video and spoken-word clips and amplified representations of his most identifiable choreography and accessories.

Since the show opened in Las Vegas in December, reviewers have paled at some cartoonish mash-ups and missteps during pivotal songs (e.g. a frolicking life-size sequined glove and loafers during "Beat It"), yet there's been no argument over King's ability to intensify and amplify the precise, essential dance power in such signature numbers as "Billie Jean" and "Thriller."

Next month, even more of King's oversize movement collaborations with Cirque du Soleil performers and crew will be visible during Madonna's high-exposure Super Bowl performance. "There'll be some magic," he says slyly.

Meanwhile, as the "Immortal" tsunami rolls into Los Angeles this month (more than 900,000 tickets have sold in North America), King has officially begun work with Cirque on the more intimate, permanent version of "The Immortal" to go up in Vegas in 2013.

It had been his "great dream," he says, to scale back to create a work for a fixed site. "The possibilities are just endless when you're in a theater and there aren't people standing in front of you like in a rock concert, with popcorn flying and alcohol," he says. "This will be a focused environment where we'll really have people's attention. I just can't wait."

Pop choreographer with a busy schedule Jamie King

January 21, 2012 | 7:30 am

AAAAAASUVORK5CYII=

In the 1980s, a Wisconsin teenager named Jamie King papered his walls with posters of MTV heroes Michael Jackson, Madonna and Prince and re-created and rearranged their videos, move by move, in his mom’s basement. Within a decade, this mostly self-taught dancer landed the single open spot for a male dancer on Jackson’s 1992-93 “Dangerous” world tour; within two decades, he’d become a director of multimillion-dollar tours, conceiving arena shows for such passionate and exacting artists as Madonna, Prince, Rhianna, Celine Dion, Christine Aguilera, Britney Spears and Ricky Martin.
"He knows what I like," said Madonna in an interview last week. "We can finish each other’s sentences."
During an afternoon conversation at the Polo Lounge, tour director extraordinaire Jamie King, 39, laughed at his trajectory from basement-to-arena with these music superstars. “That is irony for you,” he said. “Or maybe manifestation is a better word.”
Content to be a behind-the-scenes force until now, King is in for a huge bump in exposure. His current chores include his work as director-writer of the Cirque du Soleil/Michael Jackson tribute world tour, “The Immortal” (next week at the Honda Center and then at Staples Center), as well as his stint directing Madonna’s lavish Super Bowl performance (Feb. 5), and last but not least his on-screen role in the new Latin-"American Idol"-esque TV series with Jennifer Lopez and Mark Anthony called “Q’Viva!,” (airing this month on Univision and later in spring on Fox).
Here's the Arts & Books profile of Jamie King.
And watch him in action back in the day, in rehearsal with Michael Jackson (King has a sweatshirt around his waist).
