The Discussion of MJ's Unreleased Tracks

MJ’s creative process baffles me.
  • “Loving You” was given full vocals, then promptly abandoned and never returned to.
  • “Hollywood Tonight” was in a constant state of production over a ten-year period and, despite lyrics existing, the bridge and third verse were never recorded.
  • Three different demos of “Best of Joy” were recorded in full over nearly three decades.
Like???
Loving You is such a good song. It’s weird we don’t have any info about it

I didn’t mean to imply that I was angry or upset by his creative process; of course none of us will ever understand what it’s like from his perspective. There were just some really fascinating decisions made that I’d love to know the rationale behind. He was a very peculiar worker—he never approached any song the same way, and it left us with a lot of interesting stories.
Yeah, I didn't get that impression from what you said.

Is there a more detailed description of Wonderful World of Candy? For some reason, this song has always caught my attention.

Apart from the fact that Joe Jackson thought the song was beautiful.

Damien takes time to answer our questions. Why are you so ungrateful when he answers some of them briefly? *shm*
Are you crazy I said only he did not heard Neverland landing and world of candy because he don't have info so told you I'm not ungrateful all songs he heard he have no briefly info he knew the instrumental and lyrics ok ?

My guy... it's a new day. Let's start fresh with another topic. :)

From 2:53, anyone manage to read? to decipher? This is where some saw "Turning Me Off"? I can only see "Slave to the Rhythm".
On the first shot of the three tapes stacked horizontally, the middle tape says “Loving You, Turning Me Off.”

I don’t think this is evidence that the song was worked on for the album; more so that it just exists on the same DAT tape as “Loving You.”

That doesn't look like a DAT to me, it looks like the cover for some sort of master reel.

Did you know something about crack kills ? Or what you do to me did you heard them ?

  • Recorded in 1988 for the Dangerous sessions. This was the first song recorded for the album
  • A fully complete version is known to exist.
  • Re-recorded in 1990 and 1999
  • Song is owned by a discord collector named "Zach".
  • The actual tape the song was recorded on was apparently "found somewhere it shouldn't have been". Also known as "The Child" and "Children

Thanks for linking the video here. I didn't really remember about this.

I grabbed the video, took a few screenshots and processed them to try and sharpen it a bit or at least attenuate the blur (not the best attempt, but it's possible to decypher, at least).

1st box: "Blue Gangsta ... Safety Copy"
2nd box: "Cheater (?), Loving You, Turning Me Off"
3rd box: "Xscape ..."

Left to right: "Do You Know Where Your Children Are, Slave 2 - MT 54", "Reel #29 (?)", "Xscape...", "Xscape...", "?"

This is a tad closer and more focused shot of the BASF tape onwards from the image above this one.
Left to right: "Safety D->D Copy ...", "Place W/ No Name (?)/Freeze, Demo BG's Slave", "MT99 (?)", "MT197 (?)", "Slave, Baked 9/12/11, Transferred in Pro Tools 9/28/11", "Slave to the Rhythm Work Tape, Baked and Transferred in Oct 2011", "Slave to the Rhythm, Transferred in Pro Tools 9/19/11"

Hopefully you guys can have a look and decypher some more.
(@AlwaysThere I'm pretty sure that, besides the huge MT (multitrack) boxes, all the rest are 2" stereo masters/dubs).

From here on out, if people are going to post such things, how about we just let them believe it ?

“found somewhere it shouldn’t have been” cracks me up everytime 😂

What would be the most accurate: this or Richard Lecocq's All The Songs?
I have both, and what I can say is that my copy of All The Songs has quite a few print errors. For example, one of the tracks from Dangerous has recording details from Off The Wall. There are also several pieces of info in there I haven't been able to verify when comparing to other sources. Doesn't necessarily mean it's untrue, but it is a bit questionable, imo.

I'd stick with Damien on this one.

The archive nerd in me is practically beaming right now.

No, I think it just happens to be on one of the many tapes alongside “Turnin’ Me Off.”

Sidebar: one of the tapes has a date of July 1985 listed. Could that be when “Loving You” was recorded?
Also, the box to the right of this one you mentioned seem to have been blurred out beyond the motion blur. Why would they do it? Keep a title hidden from us?
