The Daily News Jan 20 - Grammys Will Stage 3-D Tribute to Michael Jackson

Argh, I hate "airing", I never have these channels that "air michael jackson" stuff. Why can't this just be included on the TII movie.

Acorah's Jackson show worst of year

Derek Acorah's Michael Jackson: The Live Seance has been named the worst programme of the past year.
James Corden and Matthew Horne's comedy sketch show Horne And Corden and Amanda Holden's circus-themed series Big Top also made the top five of the survey, which asked contributors to name the biggest TV flop of 2009.
Television psychic Acorah's programme, which was broadcast live on Sky1 in November and hosted by June Sarpong, racked up 33 per cent of the votes cast by more than 9,000 Yahoo! users ahead of Wednesday night's National Television Awards (NTA).
In the programme, Most Haunted star Acorah travelled with four Jackson fans to a house in Ireland where the late pop star once stayed. He claimed to have contacted the spirit of Jackson - who died last June - and relayed messages to his friends and family.
Holden, whose show Britain's Got Talent is nominated for an NTA, starred as a ring mistress alongside Tony Robinson in Big Top, which came fourth in the survey.
The sitcom launched on BBC One with 3.3 million viewers but soon plummeted in popularity with one critic describing it as "so determinedly old-fashioned that if it were a person it would be wearing plus fours".
Horne and Corden's show Gavin And Stacey, written by Corden with Ruth Jones, is nominated for an NTA for Best Comedy but the pair were blasted by critics for their sketch show, which came fifth in the Yahoo! poll.
The second worst programme, as voted for by Yahoo! users, was ITV's Al Murray's Multiple Personality Disorder, fronted by comedian Murray, known for his Pub Landlord routine.

Mini Michael Jackson thinks he's got talent

TH1_201201012Kayim-Ali%20ready-mj.jpg

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD budding Michael Jackson from Paston is hoping that Simon Cowell and a television audience of millions will agree that he has got talent next month.
Tiny Kayim-Ali Jaffer, from Paston, Peterborough, has progressed past the untelevised preliminary stages of Britain's Got Talent after wowing producers with his dance routine to a medley of the King of Pop's songs.

He got his first taste for the stage in August when dancing to Michael Jackson songs at Honeyhill's Got Talent in the Honeyhill Community and Children's Centre in Paston.

His proud dad Shan (30) said: "Everything is completely self-taught, he has had no training and I haven't got any rhythm whatsoever.

"His older brother and sister entered him into the talent show but me and my wife didn't even know he could dance like that.

"It turned out he had been watching a Michael Jackson DVD over and over again and practising whenever he was on his own."

Kayim-Ali, who attends Paston and Gunthorpe Pre-school, will dress as Michael Jackson from the late 1980s when he shows off his moves to judges Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden in February.

The audience of 3,000 will be the biggest crowd he has ever performed in front of but his parents don't think he will suffer from stage fright.

Thrilled mum, Emma (29) added: "He is unbelievably confident - he has already told us he wants to dance in front of the Queen.

"He got more nervous thinking about his uncle seeing him dancing than millions of strangers on TV, so I don't think it will scare him."

Kayim-Ali's older brother and sister get dance lessons from Danzfusion's Jenna Tudor-Knibbs, who cast her eye over Kayim's routine after hearing about his big opportunity.

Jenna (24) said: "He is a natural dancer and picks things up instantly. He has a great deal of potential and is more co-ordinated than most adults, let alone four-year-olds."

Oxygen Hairdressing, in Storrington Way, Peterborough, has offered to give him a free makeover to perfect the Michael Jackson look during the Smooth Criminal era.

Kayim-Ali's performance will be broadcast on ITV1 later this year.

Details of Grammys' 3D Tribute to Michael Jackson

This year's Grammy Awards will reflect the loss of a key component in the music industry…the King of Pop. Producer Ken Ehrlich told ET's Kevin Frazier all about the Michael Jackson tribute that show organizers have up their sleeves.

Link for those unable to see embedded video

Inspiration for the tribute blossomed from a meeting between Ken and Michael just one day prior to the pop star's untimely death. During their encounter, Ken was treated to sneak peek at the 3D spectacle Michael had planned for "Earth Song" during his highly-anticipated tour. The singer told Ken that "was the most important…piece in the whole show because of the message of 'Earth Song'; the message about the environment and the message about preserving the environment."

Ken said, "When we knew that everybody was kind of looking to see what the Grammy's were going to do about Michael Jackson…it really came down to what I felt and what we all felt Michael would have wanted. Michael would have wanted us to do 'Earth Song' and that's what we're doing in the show."

During another meeting between the two parties before last year's Grammys, Michael even hinted that he wasn't prepared to perform in the 2009 show, but might be interested in taking the stage the 2010 show. Ken said, "This year we're doing the Grammys, but we're doing them about Michael, not with Michael."

In planning this tribute, Ken has consciously kept Michael's wishes in mind. He explained, "The people that we picked to perform this 3D version of 'Earth Song' are the people that I really feel Michael would have wanted to be there--Celine Dion, who was always one of Michael's favorites. Carrie Underwood, who we talked about the night that I met with him. Usher, who we know he loved. Smokey [Robinson], his [mentor]. And Jennifer Hudson, who performed at the memorial service that we did, but was also someone that Michael really admired a lot."

Though Ken wants to keep many of the other performances under wraps, Kevin was able to pry some details out of him. "We've kind of become known for these great duets and combinations that we do and we're not going to disappoint this year," teased Ken. "I can tell you that within the last hour, a Taylor Swift combination came together that's really kind of unique and pretty interesting. I think you'll see Lady Gaga performing with someone. Maxwell, there's a pretty great performance that includes an homage to Teddy Pendergrass that will feature another artist that's pretty special."

Target will be distributing 15 million 3D glasses for free, beginning Sunday, January 24. The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards air January 31 on CBS.

LoL. Me too. When I was leaving the theater after seeing TII for the last time, I grabbed like three pairs out of the 'return' box outside of Christmas Carol......I had a "bad" moment. ...and I took them specifically so that I could watch "Captain EO" in 3D on YouTube! Haha. :cheeky: ...however, they're the wrong kind. LoL.

Also: Aww, Look at Michael in his 3D glasses, and his little jacket, suckin' on a dum dum.

I wish to god it was Michael i was wearing these for, but michael wanted his fans to encounter this, what makes me kinda mad is , if the GRAMMIES can do this with a screening, why ooh why could 3d not of been done on THIS IS IT! especially on BLURAY! kinda unreal to me. Or more to the point! Will it! and Sony will go for yet another fan exclusive knowing full well , we WILL want it! Ok Kenny and Sony explain that one please.

Terry

Its so sad also! Cause it just brings sad thoughts back, Jan 28th was to be my second show i was to go to. But in all honesty give me Michael back and i dont care about any. Is amazing to hear that he was going to do so many things though.

Terry

Can't wait for the tribute. I also wish We Are the World could be recreated with all the stars that were there then, mixed with today's talent...seeing as how 2010 is the 25th anniversary of the song.

Re: Grammys Will Stage 3-D Tribute to Michael Jackson

Go see Avatar and you'll have your 3D glasses.
those are likely polarized 3D glasses, clear lens. The Grammy tribute will likely be using the anaglyph 3D which will need the 3D glasses that have the cyan+red colored lens.

this is exicting but i agree i wish michael was here instead of this damn tibute

The Grammys are doing great, that made my day cause today i was feeling so sad, i thought about Michael for a total unrelated thing, thinking why he had to go so so sooooo soon, he would have done so much for what is happening now.

THE EARTH SONG the PERFECT DECISION, Michael would have loved it, more in THESE TIMES. its bittersweet though, wow, cant believe it....

To the Grammys, THANK YOU.

Wait wait...Question... will the 3D glasses I used to watch Avatar at Imax (given to us by them) work for this Grammy Tribute? Or are they different? I thought this type of 3d can only work through special screens and not on regular televisions.

The only type of 3D i ever saw air on TV were the red and cyans (red & blues) glasses for JAWS hehehe :D.
Because to see 3D in full color like the film Avatar, I was told, would require a special silver screen and 2 projections playing at the same time.
They also sell special monitors for 3D viewing.

Id like more info on this because I have a pair of 3Ds for red and blues and the ones i kept from Avatar. :p

Wow, this will be so bittersweet, but I am anxious to see what Michael was preparing for us and given that Earth Song was one of my favs. (even though since his death its been hard to listen to), I can't wait to see whats done.

Janet Jackson Opens Up About Michael's Death

She adds, "I hope it's inspiring for all ages."

Janet Jackson hasn't had much time to deal with the unexpected death of her brother Michael Jackson in June. After a memorial service for the King of Pop, Janet went straight to work filming Why Did I Get Married Too?, but she says her acting gig was "kind of therapeutic" in helping her grieve.

"It was a good way for me to move forward and stay busy," Janet tells Gotham magazine in their January/February issue. "When you hear people say life goes on, it's really the truth. You can't stop living. It becomes a part of you."

Janet says there are some days that are harder than others but, "I have to keep my life going." In keeping with that spirit, Janet is
working on a new album and is writing a book. "It's not an autobiography, but there are little anecdotes that I give here and there from my childhood all the way to the present that I thought would be interesting and helpful to share."

A 3-D film from Michael Jackson's planned "This Is It" tour will be shown in tribute to the singer at the Grammy Awards.

(CNN) -- A planned tribute to Michael Jackson at the upcoming 52nd Grammy Awards will feature the first-ever 3-D performance on an awards show.

Grammys executive producer Ken Ehrlich said a 3-D mini-movie created for Jackson's "Earth Song" will be presented as part of a tribute performance featuring Smokey Robinson, Usher, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood.

Jackson is being honored posthumously with the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award. Ehrlich said he met with Jackson at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, the day before he died to discuss a Halloween project the singer was working on with CBS.

He said that just before the meeting, he watched the mini-moviewith Jackson, which was to be a standalone piece during the live show in the "This Is It" tour.

"He told me this was to be one of the most important elements of the show to him because it was his opportunity to deliver a really strong message about the environment in the same way that it had done when he first did the song several years ago," Ehrlich said on a media conference call. "This film, and the 3-D in which it was done, it's pretty brilliant and it's pretty wonderful."
Jim Farber, music critic for the New York Daily News, said the combination of 3-D technology and Michael Jackson could be a strong way for the show to get viewers talking.
"Obviously there is a tremendous amount of interest in Michael Jackson since his death," Farber said. "There was plenty before that, but even more since."
The hope is also that it will get viewers tuning in, Farber said, at a time when network television has been losing its audience.
"Award show ratings have gone up and down over the years," Farber said. "Certainly there has been some [ratings] erosion for the Grammys from its peak, so they could use all of the gimmicks they can get."
It is not the first time the awards show has used technology to make for a more interesting performance. In 2008, Alicia Keys performed a "duet" with the late singer Frank Sinatra on the Grammys, similar to an earlier performance by Natalie Cole with her late father, crooner Nat King Cole.
Ehrlich said producers decided not to have the tribute performers sing along with a digitized version of Jackson, and instead chose to use the film.

"After he passed, we knew that people would be looking at the show to see what we do for Michael," Ehrlich said. "It occurred to me to take this one song, which admittedly was not a big hit, though it went to number one, that captured so much of Michael's spirit and what he was all about and to bring it to life ... with four or five singers singing along with Michael's voice."

Ehrlich said the selection of the singers was organic -- Robinson was extremely close to Jackson, and Jackson had great admiration and respect for Usher, Dion, Hudson and Underwood.

Viewers will be able to pick up free 3-D glasses from Target to fully enjoy the experience, Ehrlich said.

The executive producer said he expects the moment to rank up there with the great Grammy moments of Jackson's career, including the year he was nominated for 12 Grammy Awards on the back of "Thriller," and the time he performed a show-stopping version of his hit "Man in the Mirror."

Ehrlich said he is not against using 3-D technology in the future, though he estimates that the show is probably about five years away from being completely broadcast in 3-D.
"I would love to think that at some point we become the first awards to broadcast the show in 3-D, but that would depend on millions and millions of 3-D [television] sets," Ehrlich said.
The 52nd Grammy Awards are scheduled to be shown Sunday, January 31, on CBS.

That sounds fantastic...

It breaks my heart that Michael was actually making plans to perform this year... and he even went to a meeting last year too. (sigh) :(

Thank you very much for this StephluvsMJ
I cant believe Michael wanted to performn this year.... my God.... i miss him, i will be watching this show all cause of Michael and because of the message, lets keep his message ALIVE.

If any of you buy the glasses from Target, can you let us know which ones they are? Is it the ones you get when you see a movie in the cinema or the cheap (and crap) blu/red/cyan ones which you get bundled with DVDs/BD?

He was probably going to perform this year if he was still here? That just hurts. I hope they take the time to show his life from childhood to now. Basically his whole life had been in the music business. I hope this is the tribute I have been waiting to see for him. The others were okay and the AMA's was digraceful in my opinion. But like others have said I would rather have Michael back than another tribute. I know I am going to cry watching this.
