Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary- DVD / Blu Ray [available on iTunes Nov 19]

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

The reason i don't care for (or rather any sort of excitement) about Dangerous or History tours is because there are SEVERAL full complete pro shot performances out there, especially HIStory.

So I'm kinda meh about those.
But of course, at some point a HIStory DVD should come out. I reckon whenever the 20th aniversary of the album, they will do so.
So thats like 2014-2015.
In three years mate, only three years!!!

I hope they will release another DWT concert too.
I wonder if they'd seaze the opportunity for D25? But then again it would be really close to H20!

I swear, the abbreviations for the anniversary editions look and sound so cool. I could bet Michael thought about that too when naming the albums

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

Sony told me yesterday that they have received the first cut of the BAD 25 documentary

they want to invite me and some fans to view it once the U.S. headquarter gives green light.

and I don't know when this will come out. But the first cut has been made.

Hi mkgenie, do you have any feedback from your viewing of the documentary?
Also, do you have any new updates on the distribution? Spike is saying it's going to be in cinemas worldwide but your source said it is being made for TV viewing. Have they changed their mind? Do you have a release date or TV airing date yet?

THANKS.

Found this. Bad 25 part starts approximately at 5.00. Warning: one of the guys in the studio is an ignorant fool

Spike Lee Talks Red Hook Summer, Michael Jackson & More | Video

The world famous Breakfast Club over at Power 105.1 had the honor of sitting down and chopping it up with Spike Lee recently. Spike came through in promotion of his new film, Red Hook Summer, along with an actor from the film by the name of Nate Parker. While Spike was in the building, he spoke about the film, funding the project himself, amongst other topics.
The one that really caught my attention is his upcoming documentary on Michael Jackson; now that’s something to see. Check out the clip after the jump and be sure to check out Red Hook Summer when it drops.

You’ve done a lot of TV.

I’ve done a lot of documentaries for HBO and I’m doing another documentary called “Bad 25” which is about the making of Michael Jackson’s Bad album and we’re going to finish it for the film festival.

And they’re giving you a lifetime achievement award.
A nice watch.

How does it feel to be receiving a lifetime achievement award at 55?
[long pause] Better than when I’m dead [laughs heartily].

Speaking of “Bad 25,” I noticed some irony. You have this 1986 NY Times profile framed in your offices and in it you give Michael shit for dating Brooke Shields and Elizabeth Taylor and never having a black woman on his arm.

I’ve always loved Michael. I mean, all the stuff he did (I'm sure he meant eccentricities) never affected my appreciation for his music and that’s what the film’s about, his music, the Bad album. [Michael Jackons's estate] wanted to do Bad, they’re going to do all three eventually… ??? So the great thing about it if the estate comes I have access to Michael’s…they’re opening up all of his archives, there’s stuff in this film that no one’s ever seen before, ever, ever.
Nice dodge Spike.

Is that going to hit theaters in the U.S.?
Well they’re still trying to work it out how it’s going to be seen.

It’s a landmark album, you’ve got the Scorsese video [he directed the video for “Bad”].
Yeah, we filmed Scorsese watching the video, he hadn’t seen it in 20 years.

You shot at least one of his videos.
Two. I did two versions of “They Don’t Care About Us,” we shot one in Brazil and one here. Then “This is it.” Not the documentary but the video.

Looking back on your body of work, how do you see it? What are your favorites? What doesn’t work for you?
The only thing that makes me wince is “She’s Gotta Have It.”

Nice dodge Spike.

Spike was a rebel when he first came out, very pro-black (and many had accused him of being a racist). He was very harsh with not just MJ, but many blacks who were very successful but he felt weren't doing enough for the community.

I vaguely remember the peak of Spike's criticism of MJ happened when his Malcolm X movie came out. So I was very surprised when I read MJ had been to Spike's Brooklyn house & he was gonna direct TDCAU.

I think MJ was curious about him & may have wanted Spike to know who he really was behind the headlines. And the good thing is, he did come around after that video. And not just after MJ had passed.
Similar to what's has happened in the past 2 years with Obama. He's supporting Obama's re-election but he was the first high profile african american to openly criticize the president. For the somewhat the same reason he's criticized some black athletes, Bill Cosby, MichaelJackson & so on.

Yes, he's softened a bit (maybe a lot?) over the years, but at times (like the Katrina disaster) he won't take no prisoners. He's taken a lot of flack for his outspokenness, but he doesn't seem to care much...and still remains a Hollywood outsider.

i think him, along with Joe Vogel, is one of the greatest assets in the fan community. He's a fan, but his voice can reach a lot more people than any of us. And Spike Lee embracing MJ, has helped & will continue to help other blacks reclaim MJ & his music a bit more.

CBS Interview, but only short about Michael, beginning at 4 Min.

http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=7417718n

Like the fact he's wearing a BAD25 but it's a pity the hosts weren't interested - they just changes the subject asap.

Just had an idea, Sony and the MJ estate need to give those shirts to current music stars (Chris Brown, Bieber, Rhianna, Beyonce etc) and get them to tweet pictures of themselves wearing them. Or atleast ask them to wear them when they're out and about. That's the best promo you can get and those guys (and others) love some MJ. I guess they'd be happy to do it.

I also remember Louis Farrakhan criticizing Michael in the 80s. He criticized him for being "too feminine" and I think also for the nose jobs, saying he was not a good role model for black youth. And that was at the time of Thriller, I think.

But in the 2000s you have seen them together and Farrakhan speak in favor of Michael. Although I know that connection is controversial.

Yes it does, wouldn't be the same thing if the albums had long titles.

That would be brilliant!

That would be pretty good (and cheap) promo! The Estate needs to give them a call!

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

I'd like to find out when and how we can see this. Is it really going to be in cinemas worldwide (like Spike tweeted) or is it going to be TV only (like MkGenie's Sony source said)?
Either way I would expect it to be shown in September around the time the album drops. There'd probably be little point in releasing it in November for example.

So I'm optimistically hoping to see it in about 6 weeks. :)

I'd like to know too. I know he will premiere at the Venice Film Festival the end of this month as I understand. But I would like confirmation on where and when we will be able to view this. How about a Blue Ray of this?

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

I hope, and think, this will be great.... !!

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

I would appreciate it if there will be an official request from the Forum to the MJ- Online- Team to ask about info about the publishing of the documentation.
Only 2 weeks to Venice and it is not clear how we can see the Bad-Documentation in our countries.
Spike Lee was yesterday in the Piers Morgan-show. I rode the transcript. No mention of MJ or the Bad- documentary. I find this strange. P. Morgan doesn`t let in other cases the opportunity out to talk to with guests about MJ.

Re: The Spike Lee BAD 25 Documentary [Discussion]

The doc will be exclusively shown in a movie theater in Paris on Sept. 1st:clap:

I wish it would have been the concert :D

First Look: Spike Lee's Michael Jackson Documentary 'Bad 25'

bad25_02.jpg

While he's still hoping to get his "Brooklyn Loves MJ" project off the ground, as he told us last week, Spike Lee's been able to scratch his Michael Jackson itch; hot on the heels of the release of "Red Hook Summer," he'll unveil "Bad 25," a new documentary about the creation of the pop star's seminal record, at the Venice Film Festival(where he'll also get a lifetime achievement award) in a few short weeks. And it was announced this week that Lee will also be bringing the film to the Toronto International Film Festival.

Given the high quality of Lee's documentary work so far (you can read our take on these projects in our retrospective of the director's work from last week), we're expecting this to be a cut above the usual music documentary, and some first-look images from the film, which reveal participants like Martin Scorsese andThelma Schoonmaker, Kanye West, Sheryl Crow, ?uestlove and Mariah Carey, suggests that this should shed some interesting light on the 25th anniversary of "Bad."

We'll be bringing you our verdict on the film in a few weeks, but in the meantime, check out the images and an official synopsis below.

Spike Lee pays tribute to Michael Jackson's Bad on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the epochal album, offering behind-the-scenes footage of Jackson recording the album and interviews with confidants, musicians, choreographers, and such music-world superstars as Kanye West, Sheryl Crow, Cee Lo Green and Mariah Carey

Bad 25 features captivating behind-the-scenes footage of the recording sessions for several of Bad’s biggest songs ("The Way You Make Me Feel" being among the most memorable). There are also revealing interviews with a number of fellow artists who worked with Jackson — such as Sheryl Crow, with whom Jackson shared the duet "I Just Can’t Stop Loving You" on stage during the Bad world tour — and those who were inspired by him, including Kanye West, Cee Lo Green and Mariah Carey. Lee offers us a more intimate side of Jackson, one rarely glimpsed amidst the glitter and circus-like atmosphere that surrounded the notoriously private superstar, especially as his personal life (and appearance) became a scandal-rag mainstay in the years that followed Bad. As the landmark album takes shape before our eyes, we see Jackson’s dedication to his craft, his talent for inspired collaboration, and his sly sense of humour — as well as some hints of the toll that his relentless work ethic had on his psyche..

WTH? MJ never dated Liz Taylor? But, he did date Stephanie Mills and last time I checked she was/is black.

Says alot about someone who doesn't like people dating out of their own race. But, either way I can't wait for the BAD25 doc. But, some of the things he says about MJ are disapointing like what he told Katie Couric about MJ looks. SMH
