Rolling Stones are a DISGRACE!!!

I know this list is a crock of shit and done to get people talking...

I also hate to bring up the whole Prince v MJ debate (we know who's better)

But since when has Prince been known as a better vocalist than Michael Jackson? He's at 16 in the list.

MJ 86th Prince 16th

Based on pure vocal ability, MJ destroys Prince 99% of the time......
MJ destroys Prince 99% of the time in any respect. But it’s Rolling Stone.

Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey , Beyonce , Bob Dylan, Prince , Aaliyah, Stevie Wonder , John Lennon , Kurt Cobain, David Bowie, Paul McCartney Mick Jagger, Robert Plant , Bruce Springsteen, D’Angelo, Rihanna, Bjork, Lady Gaga, Willie Nelson, Rod Stewart, Arriana Grande ......plus many more who are better singers that Michael Jackson.
Mick Jagger!! 😅

We got a secret rolling stone employee in this mf!

I will go out on a limb here and say that the allegations don't play a particular role in Rolling Stone doing this.

Smooth Radio published their list of top 20 male singers. I'm MUCH happier with Michael's placement here :)

and for those curious, here is the top 20 female singers list

Curious what a merged list of male and female singers would look like, but I see no way he wouldn't still be placed extremely high.

I think the problem with these kinds of "greatest singers/bands/songs" lists is that they are mostly popular Top 40 radio music & artists who sing in English and also primarily USA/UK artists. Plus there is little if anything before 1956 when rock n roll blew up. That is not the only kind of music there is. It's the same thing with a guitar list, it's always the Eddie Van Halen/Jimi Hendrix style hard rock & metal players. There's no jazz or flamenco or country or bossa nova or funk guitarists.

That is the problem with ranking largely Western music, specifically popular stuff, and of the two generations that remember it.

Non-English ethnic music is termed "world music". All music is made in the world. The United States is not on Jupiter. 😆 "World music" makes it sound like its lower class (like the term "third world") or that it's exotic. It's ironic that countries such as Japan will listen to music in English, even if they don't understand the language, but when has a Japanese singer had a hit in the USA? Only Kyu Sakamoto in the early 1960s. It's also ironic that in Japan, R&B/funk is given more importance than in its origin country. There's all kinds of old R&B albums in print there, some that have never been on CD in the USA. They've been out of print since their original release in the 8-track tape era. You can buy them as a costly import.

So placing MJ at #86 wasn't random. This was rolling stone's sinister way of trying to get rid of MJ.
As much as I don't agree with what they did,the sinister, not obvious approach they chose for Michael's place, with 86's roots in symbolism,is pure evil if done on purpose.
I love it(but still wish they would have done this to another artist)

Honestly, I actually prefer seeing them separate, at least when looking at things such as range, technique, etc. since men and women tend to have very different voice types, ranges, and ways in how they use their voices. I'm not entirely sure it'd be fair to compare a soprano female to a baritone male, for instance. That's like apples and oranges.

Of course, if they're talking about just popularity and influence etc. then it's different, but on a more technique-based ranking it wouldn't be entirely fair. (I have yet to look at those pages you linked, might do that later, so I admittedly don't know what kind of reference points they used for ranking.)

It’s ok, I know what I have said here is controversial. It’s going to be hard to make him rise though when 75% of live footage of MJ on youtube is of him lip syncing. Nobody can convince me this isn‘t part of why he is so low.
You say this but Mariah Carey is in the top 10 (5th) yet she is notorious for using playback. Its a well known joke at this point. So by your logic if RS actually watched concerts before making this list (they didn't) she should be ranked in the 80s also. History tour aside, he only really used playback on a few songs (most of which required heavy choreography).
release the triumph and victory tours…
(+Bad Tour ) Yes. Especially now that we know they have victory tour on film.

Not sure if it's already been said but how did MJ goes from 25 in 2008 to 68 in 2023, while most of the higher places are held but much older artists ?

There's not only MJ's placement that I don't understand...
- I already mentioned in another thread about vocals how much I appreciate Poly Styrene's vocal performances with X-Ray Spex and consider her as an underrated vocalist... but they say it's not about vocal performances only but about legacy and impact... then I guess there are missing artists who had much more impact.
- Also I do like the Misfits but... but wouldn't put Glenn Danzig in a top 200 (that includes ALL artists of any genre) ... and if they included the Misfits ... where are the Ramones and the Sex Pistols? (I don't like the Sex Pistols, I just think they had more influence.), and... Bad Religion?
- When I thought it was strictly about vocals, I also thought Joan Baez should get a much better place, like at least in top 3.
- Many artists missing that could be in there...
- ...

I only found out today they included Glenn Danzig. omg, I just laughed and laughed. I never saw The Misfits live but did see Danzig back in the day. Decent enough band, as it happens. But 'influential vocalist'? I think not!

It's interesting, isn't it? :ROFLMAO:

I don’t know man, all I did was to try to get into their head and try to understand their opinion for placing him at 86.
I have no idea if Mariah mimed I can’t stand her voice or music, I never listen to her music let alone concerts.

I didn’t put him there, if it was up to me I wouldn’t even place him in the top 200

Just kidding, he’d be nr 200

Just kidding he would be significantly higher, perhaps nr 86

Just kidding I’d have him top 5

Bro I hate to call you out but are you even an MJ fan?

Some of the posts I've seen are a bit suspicious. Not hating btw but it's just a little odd.

If being realistic is considered as so called ''suspicious'' behaviour, then count me in as well
