I still can't quit believe we're now living in the post Prince era. Admittedly I didn't think much of Art Official Age and haven't really listened to Hit & Run 1 and 2 as of yet, bassically after the release of 20Ten and the fiasco that was his latest website around the release of MPLSound 3-disc package, I just got a little bored with things. My top 3 have for a long time been MJ, Dylan & Prince, each giving me completely different things. Why was I so neglectful of Prince the last 18 months in which he released 4 albums? A prolific period also with outstanding live shows! I just presumed he'd be there and I'd get along to future shows at some point, taking for granted the fact I thought he'd just be around forever. He was the best concert I've ever been to and this is just so surreal.

This was on our local news tonight-and I was wondering why I hadn't heard of it, especially since I worked right next door to the Summit then. Did I not know who Prince was then?

But I looked up the dates (it was January, 1985). Purple Rain had already been released and they had just done "We are the World" where Prince infamously did not attend

. So yes, I knew about him, but my mother had her stroke on December 31, 1984 and I was at the hospital most of that January. So I guess this concert was not on my radar at all.

Nevertheless, it's a lovely story about Prince staging a 7th concert just for underprivileged/sick kids in Houston. You might have to click on the pix of Prince to hear the interview.

Back in 1985, Prince came to Houston for six sold-out concerts.

During that stop, Prince's people contacted Summit personnel about holding a special concert, but they couldn't tell the media about it or it would have been canceled.

Sydney Greenblatt, who ran the Summit for 20 years, had to find the venue and about 2,000 underprivileged or sick children from MD Anderson for the concert.
She worked it out with TSU and surprised the kids. We had a chance to speak with her about that magical concert.

"The lights went down, and the fog on the stage started," she said. "And there was a purple background and he walked out and the kids just went wild. They immediately knew who it was when the music started."
