Official Charts Thread For ''Michael''

cascio tracks (fans boycotting)
no promotion (noone knows about a new michael jackson album)

=

UK: #4
US: #3

that's $$$Sony's$$$ fault. :mat:

an album that has no promo wont have any legs on the chart. thats the bottom line regardless. and this album cant have legs cause of the situation we are in which doesnt need explaining.

I think we all now know how NOT to promote an album....Sony and the Estate have laid out a blueprint for how to take away an album's impact. (Next time: NO CONTROVERSIAL TRACKS!)
And I've still not heard "Hold My Hand" on the radio here in my part of the midwest USA.

What do you all mean by "It is what it is"...?
Are you implying that MJ's releases can't top the charts anymore, even if everything was going well in terms of promotion & authentic material? Are you saying that people & the general public doesn't care about MJ anymore? :(

If the general public doesn't care about Michael, this album wouldn't sell over 200K copies in the US and over 100K copies in the UK. There figures are not bad at all. The name Michael Jackson is still big.

With that said, I need to get my expectation down to earth. This album is not a hot album or big album. The events surrounding this album haven't gone well neither. First, Sony made the odd choice of streaming Breaking News, argurably the weakest track on the album. Then, Sony made another odd choice of releasing HMH as the first single, a good song but unfortunately the song did nothing to launch the album. So, obviously, in terms of promotion and album materials, this album is not handled the best it could be. That's why I said it is what it is.

I never have doubt in the strength of Michael's legacy. Good music lasts forever. He's still the most beloved entertaniner ever.

I honestly believe Radio promotion meaning getting airplay would have helped a lot.
Now #3 isn't so bad, Just wait for week 2~!

there will be NO second single... the album is over, as seen by the companys failure to promote, and radios lack of interest in Akon ft MJ... Hold My Hand. Everything MICHAEL album related will be out of most charts by 1 month from now.

it's no coincidence that the album did better, ie, no.1 in countries who don't speak English, perhaps harder to hear himo rrecognise him?

Lesson is... $ony, don't mess with MJ's legacy or fans, like me, (see youtube for how they/we feel) fans, who have been spending money for 20+ yrs will STOP, just like I did on this mess. And No more 'updating' or 'finishing' his music, he finished it when he stopped workin on it.... get it?

Either that or see your sales continue to fail, when they should be HUGE. Greddy morons.

...and finally, miught be time u read a history book, for u see when Elvis died he was messed around by RCA records, they 'remixed' his old tracks and guess what?... the album failed and fans were very angry, seem familiar?
But RCA soon learned to leave his work alone and just release what he left as he left it.

But here's the GREAT irony.. Sony who now own Elvis music, are doing it again with him too!! In november they released another damn remix of Elvis songs called VIVA ELvis, and just like before, it sold badly. Sony also cancelled the Elvis single they planned too!

I love how in a recession when company's should be using smart people and should be aware of stupidity, they go out of their way to loose money.

Cause as long as they mess with MJ, my money, and the money of other MJ lovers/music lovers stays in their pockets.

I won't update my list until the positions are confirmed on the official or some kind of "semi-official" sites. It's also easier to follow it that way.
Where have you taken it's #1 in Taiwan, I know only airplay charts there..?
And I don't think Luxembourg has their own chart either, do they?
And it's not charted in Switzerland yet:
http://swisscharts.com/weekchart.asp?cat=a

Does anyone know how it will debut in Canada? It came out on the 14th too and I don't see anything in people's charts here.

Netherlands sold far more than 25.000 lol. It already sold 30.000 copies a few hours after release (acc. to reports written on the first day at 13.00 o'clock) so the number after a whole week is probably even much higher.

How do you know about other countries like Germany? I'm really curious how it will do there... prospects are looking good.

it's no coincidence that the album did better, ie, no.1 in countries who don't speak English, perhaps harder to hear himo rrecognise him?

I've read some questionable posts here, but this? :mello:

1. I don't know if you've ever been to Sweden or the Netherlands but the people here tend to speak English rather well. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of Swedish and Dutch fans on MJJC, including myself. "Countries" don't speak languages, people do.
2. Even if you don't speak English, this has nothing to do with recognizing a voice or not. I don't see how you can draw this link. Or are you implying that people overseas are less of an MJ fan?
3. As for your whole post: this album didn't "fail". It is in the top 5 of nearly all the big markets in an incredibly competitive time with hardly any promotion. What other artist could do this? And don't flatter yourself, you are not THAT important to Sony lol and boycotting fans are a minority anyway. This album is doing well so far and could do even better if Sony releases an up-tempo song as a second single. Some fans just have unrealistic expectations; remember when there were polls where people were saying this album was going to outsell Thriller? I already said back then that these people will be disillusioned once the album comes out. No album can live up to Thriller these days. But if this album sells 5-10 million it would be a great achievement.

Thank you for this wonderful post!! Loved it:wub:

Once again I see some people in here trying to underestimate Michael in the worst possible way! I was wondering how low can some "fans" behave and I realized I haven't seen nothing yet!
Michael doesn't sell in the general public because they don't want him or they aren't interested in him....and the fans utter these words!
Congrats people we are the worst followers of an artist since this album got released!

A little correction (If you don't mind me adding this): The album sold 30.000 copies on the first day here in The Netherlands not 25.000. By now it's probably a bit higher even. :)
It's nice seeing it do well in most places.

It' s sold out I couldn't order the album! It'll be later is said!

Great news:

According to Nielsen 'Hold My Hand' is the second most played track in German radios! Bruno Mars track is #1 there like it's overally #1 in the European Union according to Nielsen.

sales figures: Ciara fails but michael jackson reigns

it’s official: Ciara has bombed. The ‘gimme dat’ performers new album, ‘basic instinct’, will debut on the billboard 200 this week with a lowly 37,940 units sold, entering the lineup at #43. This will be ciara’s lowest debut in her career to date.

on the other hand, michael jackson’s ‘michael’ lp will nab the #3 spot with 224,910 copies sold. While it is not enough to outsell susan boyle or taylor swift, the record will have have the highest entry of any urban release this week.

diddy-dirty money also received a special gift from santa claus. The trio’s ‘last train to paris’ will enter the billboard 200 at #10 with 87,380 units, exceeding all expectations, thanks to massive promotion in the last 7 days. The record did not outsell r. Kelly’s ‘love letter’, however, as the r&b king’s album will grab the #6 spot with 150,405 in sales.

On the contrary, tank was not so lucky as his album will debut at #38 with 41,181 units sold. Still, the r&b crooner has managed to outsell both ciara and kandi, the latter of whom has missed the top 50 completely with her ‘kandi koated’ release. Ho ho no.

Read more at hits daily double. Remember: These numbers and positions are subject to change when published by billboard.

Sorry to change the topic, but how does Ciara keep releasing albums? Is she still on a major label because the last few albums of hers have all done poorly.

I still believe there's been something terribly wrong with the shipping. I think they 'hurried' the album for Christmas and failed. But they couldn't push it back. Probably that's why also promotion has been at least areally late. For example in Scandinavia they started much more advertising days after the release date and it's still growing. Actually it was then a right choice not trying to promote it more if it's not shipped enough. Some countries have had so weird numbers (unbelievably low) I don't see other explanation. It's happened before. Michael didn't really debut #1 all the time during his career.

The media better leave Michael alone. He wasn't here to make this album. If there is responsibility it's the estate and sony since they made the decisions.

I agree that only Michael could hang in there with little promotion and everything. With everything that happened weeks leading to the release I was picturing something worse to be honest. But it shows that Michael can take on the current artists. He just needed that little extra push. Overall I am hoping the album does well in the long run.

HAS the album sold over 200K in the USA and over 100K in the UK? Where did you get that information?

I agree. While I noticed the media picked up the controversy, they didn't take it seriously. To the public, the controversy is just another "crazy stunt" by the "attention seeking Jackson family".

In my opinion, the controversy didn't help or hurt the sales of this album.

It is what it is.

I agree that the controversy didn't hurt sales too much (although I think it did hurt somewhat), however leaking breaking news might have. There were much better songs they could have used on the CD to entice sales. Instead they pick one of the worst songs on the CD.

I think poor radio play of Hold My Hand also hurt it.
