Official Charts Thread For ''Michael''

I think it will get higher in the UK. A lot of people just don't know about it yet.
#4 is good though I think, considering basically NO promotion (the only promo i saw was ONE advert, ONCE, on ONE ad break during the x factor final) .. and the controversy about some of the songs.

i live in Canada and i have yet to see ONE advertisement or billboard anywhere!!!!!!!!
not ONE TV commercial not even ONE! so many of my friends have nooo idea album even exists. how could they do this to us? like how? SONY knoooows whats goin on , thier a huge company and know that promotion and advertising is KEYYYYY in releasing an album especially one as big as "MICHAEL", the first album of new material since his death. So to me their clearly just not giving a flying F*CK about this project.

I'm so god damn confused and so angry. Can someone explain to me what happens when a company like Sony does this?? Is their ANYTHING anybody can do?? Or do we just watch his legacy get tarnished but these money hungry hounds? Absolutely disgusted by the lack of effort in promoting and advertising this album.
Michael Jackson would have larger than life statues of himself in different countries as a promotion tool, and that's a fraction of the promotion he wanted on each project. SONY a HUGE record company; how could they not know how to make an album properly successful ( More ads ,better promo , better first single release , better album teaser.) its like they KNEW they could have advertised more but they simply didn't give a crap. Michael would be turning in his grave right now. THIS IS F*cking BULLSH*T.

For an album that was released at the wrong time with the wrong first single, it's doing great. Come guys, cheer up.

#4 isn't bas at all for a posthumous album. Most people see it as a collection of unreleased stuff that's for MJ fans only rather than an official MJ release, so it'll never see Dangerous like first week sales.

Also worth remembering that #4 in the busiest sales week of the year is easily a #1 in any other week.

Well done Mikey!

... some people were pissed off of my worries that Michael wouldnt be no.1... and that I was afraid of this worldwide flop....

If this happens after 1 and a half year after MJs passing, what can we expect in 10-15-20 years?

IMO, now its not about the fans but about history, people in tens of years will read... what?
Charts are now more important than ever before, especially for Michael, its not an estimation, but the real pieces of albums/records.
He was the chart breaker, but in this modern era of the Internet (and online encyclopedias), such results are against Michael.

Do you remember John Lennon or Freddie Mercury for their posthumus releases?

10 years, 20 years, 50 years down the road, people will remember Michael Jackson for everything he gave us in his life from I Want You Back to Invincible.

People overestimate the significance of this album. This is a posthumous album being put together by Sony and the Estate. I have to agree with Quincy Jones that this is a Michael Jackson album, but not really a Michael Jackson album.

Sorry, but the nature of this album is indeed glorified leaks. Instead of illegal downloads, now the songs come with a nice booklet.

Why compare a posthumous album to Take That's reunion album? Come on. A posthumous album is never a hot thing to own. The fact that this album sold over 100,000 in UK is a big statement. Given the situation (the artist is not alive, no hit single, lackluster promotion), who else can sell 100,000 copy in the UK? Only Michael Jackson can do it. Who else's incomplete songs can sell millions worldwide? Only Michael Jackson can do it.

Well said.

Queen's album "Made in Heaven" released after Freddie's death was a great album and some songs from it became huge hits.

I agree that Michael's place in history was secured long time ago, but I don't agree that his posthumous releases don't matter. Of course they do.

But you don't remember Queen and Freddie for that album, do you?

Wasn't "You don't fool me" the lead single of that album? IMO that was a pretty weak track, although the rest of the album might be good.

So do we remember Freddie for songs like "You don't fool me" or rather for songs like "Show must go on", "Bohemian Rhapsody" etc.? See my point?

Plus, the latest posthumous album by Jimi Hendrix "Valleys of Neptune" that was released earlier this year received pretty positive reviews, if I recall.

I understand what you mean but I don't agree. I wouldn't want Michael to be remembered through generations only because of "Thriller". Yes, that was a great album and a huge hit. But Michael's art is so much more than just Thriller. I think every song Michael did is important and it deserves attention.

It's unfair to Michael that many people ignore anything he did post Thriller, but it was the case when he was living as well. It has many reasons, but those reasons weren't artistic IMO (for one, I think Dangerous was his best album, not Thriller).

So yes, he is so much more than Thriller I agree.

As for posthumus releases, Freddie had a band to care for his legacy, as a solo artist Michael doesn't have that. As a result we have the mess we have now....

That's true, but there were many engineers and producers that Michael worked with during his best times (I also think that "Dangerous" was his best work)and I have faith that Teddy Riley & Co. did the best that they could with what they had. I think that this album is a great start to MJ's posthumous career, as MJ did say during the "Invincible" era that "the best is yet to come." The Estate wouldn't let all the good songs on the first release, they'll save them until last.

yeah, that's what I wanted to write too. Michael was a solo artist, that's true, but he didn't record his songs all by himself. And all those people Michael used to work with could be qualified as his "band". It's not like the Estate invited some random people from the street. Those are professionals who worked with Michael for many years and know his style.

Exactly. I'm sure that MJ's posthumous career from now on will be handled with great care with all of these people working on them.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know the first week sales of "Invincible" to compare with the album?

That I agree with, respect77. And I love the songs you named here :).

In my country, people's taste goes more out to Beatles-like music, John Lennon (now!), Folk, Country... not so much R&B, hiphop, pop. Saw a great display with John Lennon at Fnac, nothing for new album MICHAEL. Are there no displays, is it Sony? I don't know...the choice made by the shop? Don't know.

Michael Jackson only when there is positive publicity. Here he will be soon forgotten...
people forget good history, it has to be repeated all over... "every day make your history, every day write your legacy"
And unfortunately no many singers have had so much press against him as Michael has had during his life.
Well, now I am so glad he gets at least many good album reviews!
That's for the music.
But I want so very bad that Michael's name would be honoured (and vindicated for a 100 % but that's another thing) all over the world. And if good reviews for an album could help a little bit, so I am glad.

&#8220;&#8216;Michael&#8217; &#8211; Michael Jackson&#8217;s fastest selling studio album in 20 years marks the Return Of The King Of Pop

Following the highly anticipated release on December 13th of Michael Jackson&#8217;s new studio album entitled &#8216;Michael,&#8217; The King of Pop is once again dominating the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com

UK
</st1:place></st1:country-region> charts.

This week the album achieves the biggest opening week for a new Michael Jackson studio album in the UK since &#8216;Dangerous&#8217; in 1991, almost 20 years ago. Selling over 113k copies and entering at No.4, &#8216;Michael&#8217; continues the musical legacy of Jackson that started over 40 years ago. The album is Jackson&#8217;s 19th to reach the UK Top 10, while the lead single &#8216;Hold My Hand (Duet With Akon)&#8217; extends Jackson&#8217;s incredible run of success to 55 UK Top 10 hits; his first being &#8216;I Want You Back&#8217; in 1970, 4 decades ago.

Critics and fans have hailed the new album as &#8220;Brilliant&#8221; with &#8220;Stunning collaborations&#8221; and &#8220;Certainly worthy of the legacy of the King Of Pop;&#8221; proclaiming that it &#8220;Bursts with verve and confidence with lots of inspirational, uplifting anthems and melodic, sweetly sung ballads.&#8221;

HMV&#8217;s Gennaro Castaldo adds to the phenomenon:
"What was particularly evident this week was the large number of younger customers buying Michael's album in our stores. Michael's ability to inspire clearly remains undiminished, and I would say that we are witnessing the torch being passed on to a new generation of fans, who will continue to believe in the power of his music to ensure that his unique legacy remains secure."

Michael Jackson has 9 UK No.1 albums and 9 UK No.1 singles.&#8221;

Sorry guys, I don't know why it looks so weird, trying to edit it but it doesn't work =(

Yesssssss!!!!

Accoridng to Polish Radio Number One MJ has sold worldwide in first week around 800k including presales - but it is not comfired so it can be just rumor.

Indra that was posted on the main page. But it doesn't hurt to repost it. I think it helps us to keep perspective in here. We may not have 'Michael" where we want it, but it doesn't mean it is a flop. We can't be tunnel visioned into being negative. We can be happy for the success it has and then try to grow from there.

I somehow doubt this... Does anybody have the statistics from HIStory, BOTDF and Invincible? I'm sure those must have sold more in the first weeks. I know they sold more in the USA in their first weeks, compared to the the sales of Michael that we are about to be getting shortly.

I think it'd be pretty close real numbers because the good estimate is 2,5 times US+UK..
