Michael - The Great Album Debate

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

@ Bumper: I wasn't trying to insult you, jeeze. I didn't know Jesta had asked for your opinion, I just thought you were trying to criticize him with advice that any fan of Michael Jackson would already know anyway.

I apologize.

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

I appreciate any advice/constructive criticism that anyone can give me! It's the only way I can improve. Though I shan't be rehearsing again until April due to shooting for the "Behind the Mask" video. Speaking of which, when's the deadline for the footage?

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

Well I think you're doing wonderful! Practice practice practice and you'll be doing amazing things. :)

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

Thanks!!! I'm considering uploading the full current mix I'm using for you guys to listen to and give me any tips for improvement. Should I do it?

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

You should definitely do that! I will check it out and give my comments as soon as I can! :) If you want to put it here or PM me, whatever works for you.

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

I'll send it to you via email, OK?

EDIT: I've sent it!.. I think. AOL's acting up a bit. Did you get it?

EDIT 2: It appears that it has definitely been sent now.

Okay, I listened to it for the first time and these are my initial opinions,

It sounds great, I love the faster pace of it. I would maybe leave more of the 'ow' in there, like half a second, before you fade Smooth Criminal out, if you can? It might make that sound a little better. And the gap is a little long between that and the start of Dangerous, but I'm not sure if it's timed that way because of your performance? It just seems like it could come a little sooner and hit harder. But I do kind of appreciate the slightly dramatic wait for it to start.

Overall I enjoyed it very much, made me dance! :D I wish I could help you with it, I love working on mixes like this.

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

I did intentionally leave a big gap between "Smooth Criminal" and "Dangerous" because of the performance, so I can have a false fade-type thing. I've spent a lot of time tinkering with the way to fade out "Smooth Criminal" into the "Dangerous" section, but most of the time, there was this static-y part just after that sounded too rough, and what I had was the best that I can do, considering I'm using Movie Maker for this! :D Although I do want a better way to start the "Dangerous! (Dangerous!)" part because I do feel that it comes out a bit too out of the blue. Have you got any ideas for it?

Thanks for the feedback, and I'm happy that it made you wanna dance, that's the whole reason for creating the song! Plus I love the instrumentation of the "This Is It" version, especially that little melody in the chorus!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you say at one point that you worked with a musical group?

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

Yeah, I can't remember, I haven't seen the movie more than four times, but did they play Smooth Criminal that fast in the movie? I remember they played it quicker, but I didn't realize it was that fast? You didn't speed it up at all, did you? I will have to watch it again.

I will listen to that part more and get back to you on what I think might be done! I figured that's why there was the gap and I really don't think it sounds too out of the blue really! That clip could maybe be EQ'd better so that it matches the rest of the sound of the song, making it hit harder when it comes in. The volume feels lower and you can tell that the quality is much lower. Maybe try to find an HD audio source for it on youtube if you haven't already looked?

Sorry, this is really off-topic, but what the heck anymore.

edit: listening to my audio of Smooth Criminal from This Is It, it sounds a lot slower than in your mix.

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

I did up the tempo a bit on some audio editing software, but to make it sound correct to the sound, I lowered the key of the song to make it fit. I have looked quite a bit to find a better source for the live studio version of "Dangerous", but I haven't really found a better version.

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

I see... I think I have a higher quality version I'm sending you, let me know if you think it sounds better.

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

OK, thank you!!!

I didn't say you insulted me, I said it was a personal attack. In other words, you did not focus on what I said but on me as a person without any apparent reason.

You were not trying to insult me, ok. You apologized, ok, I accept it. Now explain what was your point? To give me a piece of advice? To suggest me not to react to Jesta's video? To "defend" Jesta the believer against Bumper the doubter (even if I didn't attack Jesta)?

Now, you complained about the innocent happy flirts, but you allow yourself to trigger bad mood with a total lack of condescension. What kind of reaction did you think I was going to have when you posted your comment.

On top of that you do exactly the same as I did regarding Jesta's video. I'd give you a piece of advice though. Jesta, as requested by himself, needs constructive criticism, not fans' praising. It is easy to praise. But being honest when criticizing someone is not easy. I haven't seen a single other advice on Jesta's video, beacause no one seems to dare giving it.

If you really want to 'defend' Jesta, don't focus on my person, but on Jesta's video. Have guts to criticize what should be improved, because at the end of the day, he's going to perform in front of a public who are not necessarily MJ's fans, he's not going to perform in front of you, so keep the praise for after the show.

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

Okay so this is completely new (and I don't know if anyone has brought this up before, but I'm far too lazy to search through 425 pages), but I was watching This Is It again the other day and this clip struck me:

Now, I am someone who, as soon as he heard breaking news online when it first came out, did NOT believe this was Michael singing. I will never forget the feeling I had as I listened to that song the first time.

However, I enjoy all three Cascio songs, and I used to joke with people that I'd like them even more if I could hear Michael Jackson sing them.

We all know Teddy Riley claims he had to mess around with the vocals through editing programs. A casual listen to the fan made acapella of any Cascio track or even Hollywood Tonight (which hopefully no one doubt is Mike) tells us that.

I have also read fans saying they'll believe it when Teddy can take an official Michael Jackson acapella and recreate that odd vibrato we hear on the Cascio tracks.

Listen again to Mike busting out speechless. I can imagine someone taking vocals like that and recreating the effect. Unfortunately, I don't know how. It would be interesting to see the result.

Gosh, this is really frustrating when you don't even read my post completely.

Sure, I got a little defensive of Jesta when I felt you were just looking to criticize with already apparent advice, but it wasn't because you're a 'doubter' and he's a 'believer'. It had nothing to do with that, I can assure you.

And I never said it's wrong to give criticism, did I? I said I didn't know he asked for it. I gave him constructive criticism also. I don't agree with going, 'Perfect!!! No room to improve. You're the best I've ever seen!!!' either! It's not realistic.

Hope you understand my point better... I just don't know how many times I've heard Michael Jackson say almost that same advice you gave Jesta and I found it kind of silly to just repeat almost word for word what Michael says in interviews and during rehearsals, etc. as your advice to him.

Be the music, feel it, move sharply, smoothly, be confident and proud. Practice a lot...

That's the sort of advice that is common sense if you've ever heard Michael Jackson talk or seen him perform.

Lol... did you hack into my account? :tease:

I just PM'ed Jesta and told him to move more sharply, be confident and keep rehearsing...

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

I just want to share this with you.

On Thursday, I listened to the MICHAEL album on my way to work. I played the songs in order; however, I usually skip Monster and Breaking News. I happened to wear gloves, had a cup of coffee and office building pass on my hands, so I was not able to press the forward button of my iPod when Monster started. I let it play. I got to the office, put down my coffee and building pass, took out the iPod from my jacket and hit paused.

So, I worked day and night, by the time I left the office I totally forgot what song I was listening in the morning. I put the headphone on and pressed play. The moment Moster started to play. It caught me in suprise. I thought "who is it?". It felt very foreign to me, as if I didn't know the voice. Again, it felt foreign and unfamiliar.

Any one who has similar experience?

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

Listening to All I Need today, in the car, I turned it up really loud and the voice sounded very odd and foreign, yes.

 No, that is just typical advice you'd expect from a Michael Jackson fan, isn't it? We've obviously all watched his videos, seen his home movies, watch the interviews from each era, absorbed his every word, read his books, watched his shows.

Everyone knows Michael Jackson was a perfectionist and the kind of energy he had. Everyone's heard him talk about the fire and letting it burn and sizzle and sparkle and all those things. Everyone's seen him proud and strong and pulling off his moves perfectly.

Well excuse my ignorance, but I didn't see any of that in the video posted by Jesta. Regardless of what Michael would have said and even if I weren't a MJ fan, I would still have said the same. At least I have guts to be honest rather than saying "it's great" when it's not. If I am wrong I'd like to see who else thinks it's great.

This doesn't mean that I am discouraging Jesta. I want him to give his best he can, but obviously my comments are pointless and useless since Michael (would have) said the same, so I won't give any comments related to Jesta any more.

Anyway good luck Jesta!

p.s. Wait a minute. How stupid of me. Anyone would say "good luck", it's typical! So why do I even bother saying it? Darn!

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

I don't recall ever saying it was great. I said he's doing wonderful, which I believe so, he's on the right track. He's getting the movements down. He's practicing. That's what I said, practice practice practice. That's what I think Michael's best advice was, to just never stop working and practicing hard at what you want to do and for what you love and live for.

I understand your point, Bumper, my OP to you was said in a joking manner anyway, you just took it as an attack when I was just being sarcastic. Anyway, it's all my fault anyway for not seeing that Jesta had asked for the critique, I figured he was just posting the video for fun to share with us. Again, I apologize and can we move on now?

I already said I accepted the apology. I just wanted to understand what different did you say regarding the advice? By the way, his performance wasn't that wonderful. Have guts to admit it if you really want to help him.

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

I wonder how Black Widow and Ready 2 Win sounds like.

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

Two of the other Cascio songs.

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

Really? When were those names found out? So there's:

*"Breaking News"
*"Monster"
*"Keep Your Head Up"
*"All I Need"
*"Stay"
*"Burn 2Nite"
*"Water"
*"Black Widow"
*"Ready 2 Win"

So there's... 4 Cascio songs we haven't heard yet? Was there 13 or 12 Cascio songs?

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

12, there are 3 more.

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

OK then. It will certainly be interesting to hear the rest, that's for sure. Though, I'd personally want to have a month listening to all his unreleased stuff and watching all the "This Is It" rehearsal footage.

Re: Michael - The Great Album Debate (Only Go Here if You Want To Continue The Controversy)

12, there are 3 more.

Where did you catch that info?.

I read those 2 titles in a pirate compilation.
