Michael Jackson Album Sales After Death: An In-Depth Look

Sorry. I believe you are wrong.

The 'Thriller' 'project' has sold over 100 million by now. Add up sales of albums (Thriller and T25) + singles (physical and downloads) + VHS/DVD/downloads, and there can be no doubt that the 'Thriller' concept has sold way over 100 million.

Sony would not hold themselves open to riducle just for Michael Jackson - I can asure you of that - so you must take their word for it.

thinking about it you're right

So called a "Thriller project" (or T. concept) and the Thriller album are two different things that can not be combined! (logically singles are not the album itself)

Album Thriller has 70 mill. copies ... sold since 1982...

^Technically, the reason Sony gets away with the 100 mil+ figure is because they combine album sales with single sales and music video sales. If you take all of those and add them up, total UNIT sales for Thriller are over 110 million. Album sales alone make up 70 million of that.

^ But because Sony (and nobody else) doesnt present it as the combined numbers or as a Thriller project or whatever, it still doesnt mean its the Thriller album itself that has sold 110 mill.!

The same is for any other album (AC/DC, Grease), look at the report about album sales for Britney, it sounds like 100 mill. albums, but its also singles..., but its presented as - albums, that is not true!

the record company do that for every album i think like moonwalker said with britney spears, who sold over 100 million record ( i thinks when they said records it means album+ singles sales) like janet who also sold over 100 million records, but when all of her album sales is actually close to 50 million but add her singles to that and its over 100 million, and i think lady gaga sold over 55 million record with over 10 million being actual albums sales and the rest singles

Record sales in the eyes of most record companies are unit sales. They combine both album and singles together and come up with a number. In fact, sometime this week I am going to lay out a comprehensive list of all MJ's unit sales. The actual number is closing in on 800,000,000 units (albums, singles, digital downloads, music videos, ringtones, and any other form of musical purchase made between 1968 and 2010).

Does this include Jackson 5, The Jacksons and Motown Michael Jackson??????

Wow I want to see that. I was thinking of doing it, but the task of doing that is massive considering all the stuff Mj released. But I'll be happy to see your results.

I definitely can't wait to read that! I was always wondering if somebody could do that in a credible way.

But could you, if possible, make a distinction between MJ sales, J5 sales and TJ sales? I wouldn't want to refer to MJ sales, while it'd actually be MJ/J5/TJ sales all together.

And could you point out if it's the actual retail sales you're talking about or if it's the numbers shipped. If you can get a hold of that information that is!

The information I will be revealing comes straight from Sony. I am also combining sales for MJ's Motown albums as well. I will be including DVD sales in the figures. The numbers will reveal units SOLD, not shipped. And I will distinguish between Jackson 5, Jacksons, MJ Motown, and MJ Sony. I will not be giving a country by country breakdown, and will only include GLOBAL figures for all units sold between 1968 and 2010. You can then take these numbers which will be broken down by each album/dvd/etc and decide how many albums he sold. You can choose to include the J-5 numbers, DVD/VHS numbers, or just stick to album sales. Take it how you will.

Another interesting thing I plan on doing, is talking about future sales projections. Sony will be releasing 8 albums of material in the next 7 years as well as countless singles, DVD's, and other forms of musical releases. I will give a projection of how high MJ's sales will be by 2025 and how he will move into the Top 5 biggest selling artists in US history according to the RIAA.

I dont want to drag Elvis and the Beatles into this discussion repeatedly and pump Smooth_criminal05 or KB50MJ for the information about the E. and B. music sales, but... its still important to confront all of us and their fans with - facts!

But could you try to find something out...?

Sounds great. Can't wait to see this.

Yes, I as well would be interested in knowing this info. But the problem with that is that accurate info for them is scares due to the time they reached their peaks.

I believe that in order to present a trustworthy information about Michael's sales and in order to put him on the right position amongst his peers, so to speak, we would need some kind of trustworthy information about the sales of the only two acts, that can level with Michael's sales. Because I sure don't buy the crazy one- or two billion+ sales.

And I'm quite sure I won't be counting on any Elvis or The Beatles fans to present us with an information.

Also a projection about future sales would be interesting, although quite difficult as the music market will change even more in the future.

From Paul Grein's chart watch column:

A Final Thought: KIIS-FM in Los Angeles plays Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" fairly often as a recurrent. What strikes me every time I hear it is how it still sounds so vital and, well, current. The record is nearly 28 years old. It's as old as Bill Haley And His Comets' 1955 smash "(We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock" was in December 1982 when Thriller was released. And while "Rock Around The Clock" was (and is remains) a classic, it sounds like an antique. "Billie Jean" sounds as hot and contemporary as any record on the radio. Credit for this goes to Jackson, who wrote and sang it, and to Quincy Jones, who produced it brilliantly. (Jackson has a credit as co-producer.) "Billie Jean" is closing in on sales of 2 million digital copies. As of this week, it has sold 1,931,000 digital copies.

^^^^^^^^Wow, there is still such demand for Michael Jackson........

Imagine how the new album (of unreleased songs) will sell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^I have some doubts that people are not interested in the new (unreleased) songs (This is It was soooo weak song)

I think that Jackson posthumous songs or projects are not the object of interest for most people. (only for hardcore fans)
its just the wave of something, which was once huge and phenomenal.

These thought doubts are based on?...What exactly?

It's going to sell a lot.

You can listen to the new songs, but without the passion and excitement, like ... OMG but with tears in your eyes..., and Michael can not promote the songs and albums himself anymore..., but there is whoever else doing it on behalf of him, and that is NOT the Michael Jackson entertainment spirit, you know what I mean...

Such a shame that when a singer dies, people going to buy his records, but when he was still alive, the people who haven't got his cd, bought his cd to what? Remember him, or just adore him because he was good person afterall?

I understand...but Michael bound his soul to his art..Everything he created ,his music, videos, dancing, everything has his spirit in them forever. Even his art that hasn't been released has the Michael Jackson spirit. He created them, and although he isn't here to present his art himself, I'm sure he would be very happy knowing his music is bringing joy to people all over the world..He truly lives forever

But I understand completely what you mean.. =\
