Make That Change!

Very good idea :) The media can be extremely selective when it comes to which stories to cover. Like not covering the Chile earthquake as much. The population there aren't as less deserving as any other because we're all equal.

Yes, I agree about Chile. They need our help too, and yet the media doesn't seem to care that much. It's sad.

Hello Family and Legacy Team-Mie's,

Donate Used Cell Phones to Charity

Why donate your used cell phones to charity? Can you believe hundreds of millions of cell phones are taken out of service each year? Wow! I find that figure stagering. With your cell phone donations, it will be SO easy to put the used phones to good use.

If you donate a cell phone you can help in so many ways...

You can help victims of domestic violence. Some domestic abuse shelters usually accept the phones.

You can help a soldier stay in touch with his family.

Help the environment by recycling.

...and the list goes on and on. I listed several resources for you here to make it VERY VERY simply to make a cellular phone donation.

There's lot sof differnet things you can do...
Recellular Donate Cell Phones to Charity or Start a Cell Phone Donation Program.

Cell Phones for Soldiers Help Troops Phone Home with a Cellular Phone Donation.

Phones 4 CharityRemove discarded wireless phones from the environment while directly benefiting charitable organizations when you donate cell phone.

Donate cell phones to victims of domestic violence for emergencies at ncadv.org. Click donate and scroll down to Cell Phone Donation.

Also, I was walking through our local Walmart the other day and on my way out of the exit I passed a cell phone donation box. How simple they make it to donate used cell phones. I made a mental note of that and the next time I went back I brought one of my old cell phones and dropped it in the box. Easy peasy.

Environmental Statement

The earth with its many resources provides a rich quality of life, but these resources are not endless. The environmental challenges we face are a result of growing demands on our planet. Preserving the earth can begin in our own homes and offices. The act of recycling reclaims valuable materials for future use and reuse, developing a clean and secure method for addressing many of the world's pressing environmental opportunities.

The Charitable Recycling Team wants to assist you and the environment by making it easy to dispose of used cell phones. Because cell phones and their batteries contain many hazardous materials that can harm the environment if not disposed of properly, it's important to know how and where to recycle e-waste in an environmentally-responsible way.

The Charitable Recycling Program encourages the donation of used cell phones and will provide a monetary contribution to charity for each cell phone donated, regardless of age or condition.

Charitable Recycling is a terrific addition for companies and organizations interested in improving their waste reduction, reuse and recycling efforts as well as gaining a greater awareness for good community service.

With our proprietary end-of-life processing, Charitable Recycling provides total environmentally-responsible recycling for your used cell phones. We remain committed to restoring the environment and securing our quality of life.

Re: MJJC LEGACY PROJECT - Make That Change!

idk - maybe this might be too hard to do, but do you think we could make a donation to one group collectively next June 25th? I donated a little bit in his name to some random public education charity a few days after he died, but I was thinking it would be great if some organization suddenly got thousands of checks from us next June 25th.

There's got to be about 10,000 or so hard core types around the world that can get together a $100 each by next year. It would be pretty sweet to donate a $1mm in honor of michael jackson.

Love this idea

Help The Abandoned Animals of Haiti

About The Animal Rescue

The Animal Rescue Site focuses the power of the Internet on a specific need — providing food for some of the eight million companion animals relinquished to shelters in the U.S. every year. But our hopes also extend far beyond U.S. borders. Animals around the world need our help, as evidenced by the recent earthquake in Haiti.

At The Animal Rescue Site, we would like to thank all of you for your immediate and overwhelming response to help animals in Haiti. The news doesn't talk much about the need animals experience during times of crisis, but you remembered — and you acted, raising over $234,613 to help them.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare's Director of Emergency Relief, Ian Robinson, brings the situation in Haiti into clear focus: "The condition of these animals before the earthquake was not good, so we can't just simply put things back as they were. We need to deliver immediate relief to animals and to develop long-term plans for a lasting good."
Your amazing generosity means more than survival to the animals of Haiti. It means that they have a future. Thank you for your strength and support!

The Dove Real Beauty Campaign -
The Self-Esteem Boosting Generation for Young People and Teachings....

We've put together a range of resources to help you make a difference in the life of a young person you care about, and we invite you to make the most of our valuable research articles, tools and links.

If you're a mom or a mentor, you might want to download our True You booklet to go through with your child.

If you're an educator, no doubt you'll be interested in finding out more about our BodyThink program, which has received excellent feedback from both students and teachers.

BodyThink has now reached over 35,000 young Australians.
Forthcoming Body Think Training dates where commenced in 2008 include Adelaide and Perth and Melbourne and Sydney in April 2008.

Research has shown that girls and boys learn about body image and beauty ideals from a very early age, and consequently often struggle to build a healthy self-esteem.

BodyThink is a specially created workshop for school aged children (11-14 yrs) to help them grow up with an informed, balanced viewpoint. This includes putting the beauty world in perspective; understanding and dealing with feelings about their physical appearance as well as how "ideal" images of beauty are created.

The workshop materials include a booklet with facilitation notes, surprising facts, activity cards and a DVD that investigates the photographic and filming trickery used to create 'perfect' images.

BodyThink is available to teachers and community professionals via attendance at a ½ day training run by The Butterfly Foundation. Attendee's can then use the Bodythink resources to inspire the young people they work with to improve their body image and self esteem.

The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty is a global effort that is intended to serve as a starting point for societal change and act as a catalyst for widening the definition of body images..For too long, beauty has been defined by stifling stereotypes. It's time to change all that.

The Dove Campaign for Real Beauty is a worldwide marketing campaign launched in 2004 that includes advertisements, video, workshops, sleepover events and even the publication of a book and the production of a play. The principle behind the campaign is to celebrate the natural physical variation embodied by all women and inspire them to have the confidence to be comfortable with themselves.

Dove® Campaign for Real Beauty
Boosting Body Image with Self-Esteem Queen Jessica Weiner
Share Article | Nov 16, 2007 Laurie Pawlik-Kienlen

The Dove® Campaign for Real Beauty kicked off the Dove® Reality Diaries: an online series that shows girls' real beauty & boosts body image with the Queen of Self-Esteem.

The Dove® Campaign for Real Beauty is a new online series that will challenge – and change – the stereotypical views of beauty in North American culture. Four real girls share their struggles with self-esteem, body image, boys and relationships in the Dove Reality Diaries. Their struggles are real; the girls honestly reveal how they feel about themselves at school, home, and with friends.

The Dove® Campaign for Real Beauty will help other girls with their own self-perception and body image struggles. “We created the Dove Self-Esteem Fund as a way to educate young girls about self-esteem issues, and as a source of inspiration,” say the organizers of The Dove® Campaign for Real Beauty.

The Dove® Campaign for Real Beauty Is Interactive

Not only are there body image quizzes and self-esteem tests, there are also quizzes that determine how girls impact others’ self-esteem. “Are you helping or hindering the self-esteem of others? Take the quiz and see.” There are self-esteem activities to help girls boost body image and feel better about their bodies, such as “Create a Self-Esteem Bubble.”

Workshop videos, “Queen of Self-Esteem” Jessica Weiner’s media appearances, and a tool to ask a beauty expert questions are all part of the Dove® Campaign for Real Beauty. Girls aren’t just sitting and staring at a screen; they’re involved in boosting body image and increasing self-esteem.

The Dove® Campaign for Real Beauty Is Educational..

Camps For Children Who have suffered Burns..

Mike-michael-jackson-9241040-680-595.jpg

In Canada: Camp Bucko

Camp BUCKO provides an opportunity for children recovering from burn injuries to meet other children who share similar feelings and experiences in a camp environment.

Camp gives these children temporary freedom from the everyday frustrations of being burned, a chance to share their stories and to bond with each other. Most of all though camp is a place to have fun and learn new things.

It is a benefit for children in these circumstances to attend a program such as this to build self-esteem to cope with life beyond their burn injury.

Camp BUCKO Mission Statement
Purpose

Camp BUCKO is a fun, safe and caring camp program free to kids ages 7 to 17 with burn injuries. Our residential setting encourages campers to participate in a variety of social, recreational and therapeutic activities that promote self-esteem, the development of leadership skills and fosters personal growth. At Camp BUCKO, kids have a place where they can be themselves without feeling different or alone.

Camp Aims and Goals

To have a fun filled outdoor adventure
to create a sense of community by providing a place where campers can learn about themselves and others with similar experiences
to introduce campers to dynamic role models by including adult burn survivors as Camp BUCKO volunteers
to promote each child’s unique abilities and strengths as steps in enhancing self acceptance
to promote opportunities to learn about working in groups as well as in one-on-one interactions among peers of the same and opposite sex

Camp is open to burn survivors between the ages of 7-17. Adult burn survivors may be involved as volunteers at camp. The camp has grown to over 70 children attending the week long camp in August. We will help arrange transportation for campers all across Ontario. We have had campers from other provinces attend our camp if there was not a burn camp for them to attend in their home province.

We are a registered charity providing the program through generous donations from firefighters associations, service groups, and other public and private organizations. A board of volunteers from across Ontario plans for camp all year. With the donations we receive we are able to fully fund each child attending camp, transportation to and from camp and each child to receive a camp shirt. Health providers, firefighters, adult burn survivors, and burn support staff attend camp to support the experienced Kinark Outdoor Centre staff.

Camp BUCKO is located at the Kinark Outdoor Centre facility near Minden, Ontario, Canada.

There are numerous activities to participate in including:

Canoeing, Kayaking Fishing
Hiking 'Chat' sessions
Arts & Crafts Campfires
Archery Rope Courses
Swimming Outdoor Sports

Camp Hopetake (pronounced Ho-pee-toc-ee) has been developed by the Tampa Bay Tampa Bay, inlet of the Gulf of Mexico, 25 mi (40 km) long and 7 to 12 mi (11.3–19 km) wide, W Fla., separated from the Gulf by numerous small islands; it receives the Hillsborough River. The name Hopetike is the Seminole Indian word for children. It was chosen with the help of the tribal office at the Brighton Seminole Reservation in Okeechobee as representational of Florida.

In 1991, our burn center participated in a pilot program that we found not only rewarding, but fun and educational. Previous patients from our burn center were invited to spend the weekend with medical personnel that they had become acquainted with while recovering from their burn injuries. For many of our children, coping with The Coping With series of books is a series of books aimed at 11-16 year olds, written by Peter Corey and published by Scholastic Hippo. The first book, Coping with Parents, was released in 1989, and the series continued until the last book, Coping with Cash the social and emotional scars associated with their injuries can be overwhelming. Camp Hopetake
Hopetake (ho-pee-toc-ee) is the Florida Seminole Indian Word for "children".

Tampa Firefighters Local 754 in conjunction with Tampa General Hospital's Burn Unit sponsors a camp especially for children that have been seriously burned. We work as staff members and financially support the camp known as Camp Hopetake . This summer camp is for previously burned children of all ages. Hopetake gives these young victims from all over the state a chance to get together for a week long adventure in Ellenton, Florida. For many of our seriously burned children, coping with the social and emotional scars associated with their injuries can be overwhelming. Hopetake provides a safe and supportive environment for our kids to share their feelings and interact with one another in a non-threatening atmosphere. They spend the week with other seriously burned children, nurses and staff from the burn unit,
and Local 754 firefighters. Their week includes a wide variety of activities including:

Swimming
Fishing
Crafts
Games
Movies
Bowling
Horseback Riding
Hay Rides
Additional activities
Demonstrations including Sky Diving, Tampa Fire Rescue Search Dogs, Martial Arts and more.

The camp is provided free of charge to all attendees. This includes transportation to and from the camp and all expenses incurred while at the camp. The camp is somewhat unique in that these special children are provided air conditioned quarters and full medical supervision by nurses from the burn unit at Tampa General Hospital and Tampa Fire-Rescue paramedics.

Cancer Kid Camps

Time spent at camp is a wonderful experience for our cancer kids and their siblings too. How wonderful for them to leave all those hospital visits behind and be outdoors doing fun things with other kids who understand. It gives them a chance to both have fun and to open up and say what they really feel about being diagnosed with cancer.

Many organizations have established cancer kid camps. These camps have the staff and facilities to deal with the children's special needs and many times the counselors are cancer survivors. Which camp your child will visit is probably dictated by which camp is near you. Check with your hospital social worker or Candlelighters to find out what is available in your area. Or, peruse the list below.

Alabama

Camp Smile-A-Mile (SAM)

Imus Ranch hosts nine “Go Rounds” each year, one in the spring and eight in the summer. Each Go Round is nine days, seven full days on the ranch with one travel day at the beginning and end. Imus Ranch underwrites all costs, including airfare to New Mexico, so there is no cost to the families. The children must be ages 11 to 17 and cannot have any lines or ports. The Ranch is designed to house 10 children per Go Round, plus a doctor, nurse, EMT, and 2 child life specialists. It is important that all parents and children understand the fundamental philosophy of Imus Ranch: It is not a camp --it is a working cattle ranch.

Camp Simcha

Camp Simcha is located in bucolic Glen Spey, New York. It is sponsored by Chai Lifeline, the international children's health support network that provides emotional and social support for seriously ill children and their families. (Chai Lifeline has five regional offices in the United States and affiliates in Israel, Great Britain and Canada.)

Camp Simcha offers two, two-week sessions for children with cancer. Our goal is to give children an exciting and enjoyable camp experience that will enhance resiliency and help them through the inevitable rough patches of fighting illness. The medical staff is comprised of pediatric oncologists from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the camp infirmary can accommodate children on treatment. Each child has his/her counselor, so that schedules can be tailored to a child's interest and energy level, and the activities mirror those at camps for healthy children (with modifications when necessary).

Hello everyone.

Thank you Bree for all of your ideas. (((((HUGS))))) :better:

Here is another idea to make a change. Michael supported the Starlight Children's Foundation. In another forum, we've set up a fundraising page where we can collect donations and it goes directly to the foundation. This is a continuous campaign and the donations can be anonymous. You can give what you can give or not give at all. The fundraising page is created on behalf of the group, so no one is singled out. Just like we do for the Plant-a Tree campaign here, we can perhaps do the same, but something for children.

So maybe wee can do the same here for Starlight OR perhaps select another charity that Michael supported. It would be nice if this were something for children. We've already covered the environment.

Example of what our fundraising page would start off like:

Just some thoughts.

That's a wonderful idea Kim :) I'll take a look at other Childrens charities that Michael supported and post about here during my lunch break.

"Children’s Institute, Inc. has long been a pioneer, promoting the well-being of vulnerable children. Everything we do is aimed at healing children who have been hurt, protecting them from getting hurt again, and preventing others from ever being hurt in the first place. We help families provide safe, nurturing homes. And we advance innovative programs and policies that contribute to safe children, strong families and healthy communities nationwide.

CII’s unique, holistic blend of clinical and community programs supports the whole child and the entire family. Our work is further enhanced and supported by strong community partnerships that encourage collaboration and the delivery of culturally appropriate services to our families. Through this integrated approach, thousands of children recover from trauma and go on to lead healthy lives.

Hey teammies and MJJC family,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I just posted about a project which I participated, which was to create a curriculum for children in middle school, high school and college in honor of Michael and Lady Diana. The project was announced on the Voices Education Project website and is called "Words and Violence". The curriculum focuses on how the words we use can impact children and really anyone. More details can be found in the post which I posted in the News and Discussion thread.

http://www.mjjcommunity.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2979843&postcount=1

Please take look as this curriculum as it is a very important project that can truly benefit everyone.

Thanks very much and please spread the word.:wub::better:

Thanks Kim.
Joining this project and using this curriculum for the benefit of the young generations is truly something Michael would love and fully support.
There's no better way to change the world than by raising awareness and providing people with the inner structure that will prevent them from resorting to any form of violence.

By all means a very worthy project for everyone to benefit from.

Thanks Kim.

Yes I agree Maria, thank you for your thoughts.

What a wonderful project. I have faved the page and will look at it more thoroughly, then spread the word about it.
Recognition for Michael as a peacemaker and humanitarian, is like a breath of fresh air. and having a project like this close to his own heart is excellent!
Very inspiring. Thanks for posting this Kim.:clapping:

Hello MJ Family,

I found this..

The Blog Article:

Because I Am A Girl

noticia_17155_normal.jpg

The Campaign:

Because I am a Girl is Plan's campaign to fight gender inequality, promote girls' rights and lift millions of girls out of poverty.

Across the world, girls face double discrimination due to their gender and age, leaving them at the bottom of the social ladder.

Research has shown that girls are more likely to suffer from malnutrition; be forced into an early marriage; be subject to violence or intimidation; be trafficked, sold or coerced into the sex trade; or become infected with HIV.

Plan is producing one girl report each year in the run up to 2015, the target year for the Millennium Development Goals. Each report provides tangible proof of the inequalities that still exist between boys and girls.

Join our campaign and help us transform the lives of the world's poorest girls.

view.image

Development Goals:

It's been 10 years since the United Nations set out the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to eradicate extreme poverty by 2015. Despite progress, we're still a long way from achieving them and time is running out.

because-i-am-a-girl.jpg

Some of the most pressing issues for girls relating to the MDGs are:

Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger:
70% of the world's poorest people are women and girls. The reality of the female face of poverty has not been fully factored into the indicators and targets of the MDGs. Progress towards reducing income poverty is being measured, but without a full analysis of the gender component of poverty reduction.

Achieve Universal Primary Education:
Achieving this goal is largely reliant on real progress being made on the MDG target to ensure gender parity in education enrolment. This target should have been met by 2005. But of the 113 countries that failed to achieve gender parity in both primary and secondary school enrolment by the target date of 2005, only 18 are likely to achieve the goal by 2015.

Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women:
Despite significant progress worldwide in enrolling increasing numbers of girls into primary schools, secondary education remains an unattainable goal for millions of adolescent girls.
Targeted government action is needed, particularly for girls from poor and marginalised families living in rural areas.

Reduce Child Mortality:
In many parts of the world more girls than boys die before the age of 5. An important factor here is that the birth preference for boys is a major concern in the 2 most populous countries on earth, China and India.

Combat HIV/Aids, Malaria and Other Diseases:
It is widely acknowledged that children who face nutritional deficiencies in early childhood also face learning difficulties, leading to lower educational attainment. The call for governments to increase their investment in preventing and treating diseases like malaria cannot be louder.

Plan Cohort Study:
See how the MDGS are affecting girls' lives across the world by reading Plan's 'Real Choices, Real Lives' study. Set up in 2007, the study follows 142 girls from birth until their 9th birthday in 2015. This year we have assessed their progress in the light of the MDGs.

Make That Change !! Let it begin with YOU and ME !!:agree::clapping::angel:

Glad to be back home and back on this site. Brings a smile on my face as i type this that so many of the MJ fans are really working to make a difference. Keep Michaeling :D

this thread makes me so happy!!! MJ Tinkerbell, thank you so much for your state-by-state suggestions for places to volunteer/donate to!!! Michael would be so happy to know fans truly want to do good in this world!!

It's so important to realize that you can help out even if you don't have money or time!!! I am a student and I am quite deficient in both of those areas right now haha! Taking just a few hours a week to volunteer can really make a difference though! I have recently begun mentoring a fourth grade girl through http://www.cycyouth.org/index.php locally, and it is truly rewarding to know that just by spending a small amount of time with a child I will make a difference for the better in their life!! :D Although I have just started, I know that it will be a mutually beneficial relationship    And really, it can be as little as a few times a month, and requires no money!!! Taking a child to the library, helping them out with their homework, or even taking them to volunteer elsewhere (such as a homeless shelter or animal shelter) can bring a much-needed positive influence on their whole life! Many mentoring organizations will even provide free tickets to the zoo or movies and such :D

If you are in the states, you can find a mentoring program in your area here:
http://www.mentoring.org/get_involved

If you are looking for something a little less "committed", you can always volunteer at a local soup kitchen or animal shelter on a basis that fits your schedule!! Many programs will require attending an "orientation", and then you can sign up or just show up whenever you can volunteer! The feeling of helping others is addictive, and you will want to come back again and again after seeing how thankful those you are helping are for your work!!! Your workplace or school may also have suggestions of places that you can volunteer, or even may have clubs for certain organizations!! My medical school is so great about that, they helped me get involved in mentoring, as well as helping out at a free clinic :D

Finally, one question if anybody knows, did Michael support any animal charities??? I have not heard of anything, but know he loved animals very much, so I would certainly like to know if he did!!

~If you care enough for the living, make a better place for you and for me

adrian, I'm sending you bunches of hugs and a MAJOR L.O.V.E.:angel::better:You are so right in that it does not take much to make a difference. Baby steps or bigs steps, it does not matter. Thank you for posting about mentoring children. They are our future, so it's important that we help them in any way we can. I'm not sure if there are any charities that Michael officially supported for animals, but like you, I know he cared for animals very much. I'll see if I can find something. Thank you much.

Hello adrianmonk :wub::angel:

You are so amazing !!:clapping: How POWERFUL you are to be able to give to Children with all LOVE and TIME !!:angel: I am totally Michael-ing you in every way today and FOREVER my FRIEND !!:angel::wub::agree:
