NEW YORK) -- Katy Perry is getting dangerously close to matching a chart record set by Michael Jackson.

Her new single "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)" is now at number four. If it reaches number one, according to Yahoo! Chart Watch, it will be the fifth number one hit from Perry's album Teenage Dream.

The only other album in history to produce five number one hits was Jackson's 1987 release Bad. Those chart-toppers were "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror," and "Dirty Diana."

While she's waiting to tie the King of Pop, Perry is also celebrating the success of her previous single, "E.T." It just reached the four-million-downloads mark this week, her fifth song ever to do so. No other artist has ever had that many songs reach the four million sales mark. Katy Perry Closing In On Michael Jackson's #1 Singles Record

If 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)' tops Hot 100, Perry's Teenage Dream will tie MJ's mark of five #1s from a single album.
Katy Perry's unstoppable Teenage Dream album continues to churn out hits ... and now, it might just make history too.

If Dream's fifth single, the just-released "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)", continues its climb to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 (it currently sits at #4, jumping 27 spots from last week), Perry will not only become the first female artist to ever have five #1 songs off one album, she'll be the first artist of any gender to accomplish the feat since Michael Jackson had five chart-topping singles off his Bad album in 1987 and 1988.

Perry's previous #1s from the Dream album are, of course, "California Gurls," "Teenage Dream," "Firework" and "E.T."

Jackson's five #1s from the Bad album are "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," "Bad," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Man in the Mirror" and "Dirty Diana."

Perry has already shattered the Hot 100 record for most consecutive weeks with a single inside the Top 10 (48, a number previously held by Swedish popmeisters Ace of Base), then kept that momentum going by spending an entire year in the chart's upper echelon. More incredibly, that streak is still active, as two of Perry's singles — "T.G.I.F." and "E.T." — sit at numbers 4 and 5, respectively.

What's more, "T.G.I.F" currently sits atop the Billboard Digital Songs chart, and may soon be her sixth single to pass the 4 million mark in digital sales, joining "E.T.," "California Gurls," "Firework," and from her One of the Boys album, "Hot N Cold" and "I Kissed a Girl." No other artist has even had four songs pass the 4 million download mark ... Perry's closest competitors in that regard are Lady Gaga and Rihanna, both of whom have had three 4 million-sellers.

Honestly, I don't pay attention to the "music" of today. Kids/teens will buy and listen to anything on mainstream radio (Kiss FM is what's popular here).

I was listening to several radio stations yesterday and the DJ's were talking about Katy Perry's concert that was here in my city last night. They didn't even know who Katy Perry was...

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

So what? There is no comparison between Bad and any other album of today!

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

Who the heck is Katy Perry? Who cares?

I'm glad I'm not alone with that then. Michael's Bad album had five number one singles when it still meant something.

Honestly, it's the first time I even hear the name Katy Perry. Can you imagine that someone would have asked "Who is Michael Jackson?" in 1987?

and?....

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

there's just one step between being catchy and being irritating

I have listened in two songs from Katy Perry on YT now. I haven't lost anything by not knowing her so far. The usual boring, uninspiring crap of today's music scene. The only thing that surprised me was that this video of hers was shot in Budapest - capital of Hungary, my country: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGJuMBdaqIw&feature=relmfu. I vaguely remember the video, but apparently it didn't leave much impression in me, despite of the fact it was shot here. Sounds like something from Eurovision...

Next....

I really don't care

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

Whatever. MJ's songs from Bad are 10x better than her songs ever will be.

well..., katy is just a product of music business (like Rihanna, Bieber...), but unfortunately, her "success" will be put down in history... of music..., thats the point.

Today, if you want to be a star, its quite easy to pose like a (half-naked) porn star, shake with asses and sing about parties and lollipop and how to kiss a girl...

With songs like these I honestly don't think she will be a great in the history of music, even if she's currently successful. Being an all time great is about so much more than just chart performance - especially in today's music business where it doesn't really mean much. I'm old enough to remember a lot of hypes like her who are long forgotten since, even if they had a short period of hype when they were VERY successful.

When I see these stars of today and how successful you can be with crap like this, it just makes me sad about the state of current popular music and I feel sorry for today's kids who will never know the magic of the 80s-early 90s in popular music!

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

Katy Perry is just a product of the music factory that is being ran by Warner, Sony and Universal.

By the way, she's with Sony.

Back in 1987, the record labels actually knew what good music was. Now, it's just love-songs. Three of the five singles had love themes. It's sad.

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

Well, sex sells. And most of her songs center around that. Michael accomplished this feat with talent alone. That's the way I see it.

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

Michael had 5 # Ones when ther were no internet promotions or downloads and people had to
go out and physically buy the Album and singles. I wish her well but even with 5 #Ones she isnt
going to Top the BAD Album or Michael's talent .. She will never go down in History as an Icon
or the GREATEST

I would be mad if that actually happened.

The fire of the Music Industry officially died on 25/06/2009............

Enough said!!!!!

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

Theres really no need to defend mj. Same ole baiting articles posted by same ole poster

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

I like her song "California girls" by the way how much did her CD sell?

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

I listened to those five songs from her... and the only one that could be even mentioned in the same sentence (IMO) with Michael's music is Firework. And even that I wouldn't think of as a great loss if I never heard it again.

...does anyone know how much those actually have sold?

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

I'd be super upset if that happened.

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

I'll just be really upset if articles play this off like she is somehow "better than Michael" because of this. Sounds like something they would do.

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

i di buy katies album Teenage dream.....not becuase of the music...but because i cover smelled like cotten candy and i had money to blow. lmao. um yea. Shes nothing compared to The King of Music. I shake my head at music today, and i ask....where did the talent go? Did it die June 25th 2009? or is there some talent like his still out there...waiting to be born...i doubt it.

Qbee, I swear I never have to post anything in any forum because you've already said it for me! Thanks for saving me some typing!
Repost.

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

Bah...Whatevs....I can't stand her music (I only ever liked 'I Kissed A Girl'), and she has a crappy, live voice....How did she get 5 #1 hits?? What hits? Every single song I've heard of hers lacks any type of memorable melody...

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

OK, I have nothing against Katy Perry but this song is in particular one of her most annoying ones.

I was watching some MJ vids on youtube the other day and I started watching the Grammy's where Michael was nominated and won. And seriously, every single song/artist in his category was a freakin classic! Now that was something winning those awards, because the competition was rife and on fire! Michael shone. These days it's hard to pick out which one will win because they're all so mediocre. And it's the same with this, it's all much of a muchness, and that's where Michael shines. That kind of music industry/era's will never happen again because the greats are gone.

So as for this, my answer is, and what?

Re: Katy Perry Closing In on Michael Jackson Chart Record

It's not really relevant, things have changed, a number one doesn't really mean anything nowadays, all those number ones from bad are absolute classics, i can bet non of these songs will be anything like that level of fame in 25 years, don't worry about it, at the end of the day Bad will always be a far better known album, with far better songs.

Exactly! Whether or not anyone here likes or knows her, it will be a record if it hits number one; and you can BET it will always be referred to as such if it does. I personally don think the the new single is particularly strong, especially compared to her other singles, but hey I would have said the same thing about JCSLY too.

Anyway I like Katy Perry, and I'm happy for her whether or not she ties the record with Mike.
