I think it would depend entirely on the nature of his comeback.
If the comeback consisted of a short, punchy, phenomenal album like OTW or Thriller, spawned a few good singles/videos and a decent live tour - I think it would be extremely well received and win a lot of people over.
If it was a desperate, uber-modern album jam packed with collaborative works from generic nobodies like Akon and Ne-Yo - and he supported it with a mimed tour - I think it would be very badly received, and deservedly so.
