Iconic artist PRINCE passes away at age 57

I find it odd that Prince didn't leave a Will?
Not that I know much about him, but he didn't allow his friends to talk to media, no talking what happen in Paisley P parties, he controlled his image and likeness with tight grip, and not to mention how he guarded his music from any illegal downloading etc, and he didn't have will? He either didn't care what happens after his passing or Will is still somewhere?

What is the court name nearest to where Prince lived?

Maybe his sister just doesn't know that there is a Will, but we will see. (Kind of reminds me of when Randy rushed to announce MJ left no Will.)

It's hard for me to believe too that he did not leave a Will. He was so big about controlling how his music was used and what happened to it, so it's hard for me to believe he would not care what happened to it after he died.

I really doubt that he didn't leave a will with specific instructions especially with all the stuff happening with posthumous releases, holograms and just so much press on the death of celebrities.
He seems like the kind of private person who would really care about that.
Not to mention how he was so big regarding being in control of everything

I personally think it's brilliant for Prince not have left a will.. He was no dummy!! in that state, considering the fact that legally everything he had would split evenly when no will does 2 major things.. 1) each family member gets fair share.. 2) no sibling can fight over what Prince really wanted etc.. its the law it's all shared!!!

He leaves as a good guy no matter what

I don't think there is anything brilliant about it, to be honest. Exactly not having a will is what may open the road to all kind of speculations and debates about what he would want to happen to his legacy. I would have expected a guy like Prince, who was so protective and controlling of his music, to have a will. If he really doesn't I don't think that's out of some kind of genius (to be honest for a wealthy person to not have a will is rather irresponsible), but rather maybe out of some kind of denial about death and about having to plan things after his death.

speculation is much better than family fueds about.. "why does she get the same as me when i did........." family cant fued over equality when give out by the state.. my opinion anyway

You can have the same equlity with a Will. Only a Will can also give instructions about other things as well.

It would be epic indeed if either Estate releases at last a picture of Michael and Prince together, Bruce said they hung out a few times.

"Prince is wonderful…just an incredible talent. Both he and Michael had a cordial relationship. They even hung out a few times. It’s common knowledge that the song “Bad” was written to be a duet between Michael and Prince. But as you know it never came together. When Prince left the studio after we were working on “Bad” he decided to pull out of it. He left the control room and as he turned around to go he said to us all, “Don’t worry, this record will be a big hit even if I’m not on it.” -Bruce Swedien

time will tell whether there is on but you would have expected executors to have come forward by now. its not just about everything been split. as tmk theres one full sister and other half siblings. that could cause issues to start with you also have the issue of a large wealthy estate having no one qualified to administer it. that could get messy

What will happen to Prince's estate? Sister says musician had no known will

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Prince's sister on Tuesday said the superstar musician had no known will and asked a Minnesota court to appoint a special administrator to oversee his estate, though the size of his fortune is unclear.

Tyka Nelson, Prince's only surviving full sibling, said in a court filing that immediate action was necessary to manage Prince's business interests following his death last week. The documents don't estimate how much his estate may be worth, but Prince made hundreds of millions of dollars for record companies, concert venues and others, and he owned about $27 million in property in Minnesota.

Nelson asked that Bremer Trust, a corporate trust company, be named administrator of the estate. The court documents say Bremer Bank provided financial services to Prince for many years.

The filing comes less than a week after the pop star died Thursday at his home in suburban Minneapolis. The outpouring of grief and nostalgia prompted fans to buy 2.3 million of his songs in three days.

Prince owned a dozen properties in and around his famous Paisley Park complex in suburban Minneapolis: mostly rural pieces of land and some houses for family members. Public records show those properties were worth about $27 million in 2016.

Estimates of how much licensing his personal brand will bring in after death reach to the purple clouds.

"He was as big as they get," said Mark Roesler, chief executive of CMG Worldwide, which handles licensing for the estates of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and other late stars.

Roesler estimates Prince's post-mortem earnings will match top-earning dead celebrities like Elvis Presley, whose estate made $55 million in 2015, according to Forbes magazine.

"Will there be a business built up around Prince 60 years from now like James Dean? The answer is unequivocally yes," Roesler said Friday.

Nelson's filing said she had "no reason to believe" that Prince executed a will or any other documents saying what should happen to his estate. Nelson's filing said she doesn't know Prince's assets or debts, but said he had "substantial assets" that require protection.

Nelson's attorneys, Mattthew Shea and Brian Dillon of the Minneapolis law firm Gray Plant Mooty, did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment.

Irwin Feinberg, a Los Angeles trust and probate lawyer who spoke to The Associated Press before Nelson's filing, said wealthy people usually create trusts to avoid the public spectacle of probate court. He said it would be unusual for Prince not to have done so.

Under Minnesota law, if a person dies without a will — and with no surviving parents, children, or grandchildren — the next people in line to share in the estate are the surviving siblings, including half-siblings.

Prince wasn't married and had no known living children. Nelson is his only full sibling, though he has five half-siblings (two other half-siblings have died).

The AP did not find liens or mortgages on any of his properties, which range from a sprawling 160-acre piece of grassland between Lake Lucy and Lake Ann, to a three-bedroom bungalow in Minneapolis that is home to his half brother, Omarr Baker.

Prince sold over 100 million albums on his lifetime, according to Warner Music Group. And Pollstar, a concert industry magazine, said that in the years that his tours topped the charts — 10 years over four decades performing — the tours raked in $225 million in ticket sales.

His best-earning touring year, when he took in $87.4 million, was 2004, the year he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and two decades after the soundtrack to "Purple Rain" went multi-platinum.

But what remained in Prince's hands is, by any estimate, less than the sum of ticket and album sales. In every record deal, a cut goes to the label, background performers and music publishers, though Prince published and wrote his own songs. Concert ticket revenue is split among the venue, the promoter, staff and the cost of travelling around. And Prince was known to throw expensive parties.

Court battles in recent years suggest money wasn't free flowing.

In April 2013, Prince lost a suit filed in New York State's Supreme Court brought by perfume maker Revelations Perfume and Cosmetics Inc. for failing to promote the "3121" perfume line named after his album from 2006 and which he touted, but only once, in a massive concert that started July 7, 2007 near Macy's in downtown Minneapolis and ended at 5 a.m. at the First Avenue club, a famous venue from "Purple Rain."

He was ordered to pay $4.4 million; he never did. Instead, plaintiff lawyers went searching for assets, found about $3 million in various Minnesota bank accounts, and used court orders to freeze them, according to Brian Slipakoff, a New York lawyer who represented the perfume maker. Prince settled for a lower amount shortly after.

"It doesn't suggest there was oodles of cash lying around," Slipakoff said last week.

Prince encountered tax difficulties several times over the years, including owing back taxes to France in 2012, which he paid up, and overdue property taxes around $450,000 in 2010. In 2013, the IRS filed a federal tax lien against him in Carver County Court in Minnesota for $1.6 million. What happened with that case is unclear.

Records on file with Carver County, where Paisley Park is located, show that he was up to date on his property taxes when he died.

Snippet from RS:
"Under Minnesota law, a person can file a will with probate court in secret. If Prince did, the will — along with any trust he created or heirs he named — would be made public once a death certificate is filed. The medical examiner, however, has yet to issue one for Prince, and an autopsy performed last week was inconclusive; authorities are currently awaiting the results of toxicology tests, which could take weeks."

Who knows if there is will?
If there is no will, then his estate is divided equally between sister and 4 half siblings + children of the two deceased half siblings.

I don't know his family story, but is any of them in the music business or were they close to Prince so they would know what Prince would have wanted?

USA today has Tyka's petition posted on their site if somebody is interested in reading it

TMZ said this bit:
"TMZ has obtained documents filed in Minnesota, asking that she be appointed to probate Prince's estate. She's asking the judge to appoint her as a "special administrator." Under Minnesota law, a special administrator is someone who is appointed when there is no executor named in a will. "

I tried to find from that court document where she asks to be appointed as special administrator, but I fail to see it? I only see she is asking Bremer Trust to be appointed as special administrator.

At least Prince's sister did not ask to be put in charge of his estate in order for her to be able to pay her electricity bills on time (something mj's mom did within two days of his death)

Nice interview with Prince's former tour manager

"My brother said to me yesterday when we heard the news, and I know exactly what he means: "People like Prince aren't meant to grow old." It's the same thing with Michael Jackson. Maybe he's right. Maybe guys like Prince and Michael really are just vessels for some kind of higher calling and were just put here to bring some kind of happiness and joy to the planet that the mere mortals can't generate."

Respect I get what you are saying but with a will.. there is one thing also... resentment towards the person that passed.. When siblings think they deserve a specific amount because of whatever reason. (was the closest, the only full blooded sibling, worked for the person etc.) and they get the same amount as the rest.. that could create major resentment for the person that passed and fights between family members..

Ill say this, if I were to pass and I wanted my everything to split evenly without anyone hating me for it or hating each other... Live in a state that will split automatically.. No Will from me!!! or sure..

We've seen what fighting wills can create - and I have in my personal life with my grandfathers will. two aunts never talk.. live 30 min from each other and my 1 aunt went to the others house for the first time in 10 years.. because of a wedding! that is what resentment from a will can do.

Respect77 i agree with your post having no will will cause alots of problem going into a guessing game of what Prince wanted done with his music.

Is there any reaction on how the half brothers and sisters feel about Prince sister making this move concern her brother legacy?

I can't believe Prince did not leave a will. Maybe one might show up still.

What will it mean if there is no will? His sister will get everything or are half sisters or brother are also legit heirs?

I don`t think it is a good decision to make no will. In case he wants really that his sister gets everything and has all rights to make further buisness decisions about his legacy it would be better he would have make it also clear in a will. It would be also protective for his sister.

Lets wait this out for a moment.. No will does not necessarily mean that he does not have documented agreements made for what he wants done with his music.. I mean he was a very unorthodox thinker that knew what he wanted.. So, lets wait this out..

More Than Half Of Prince’s Vast Estate Will Go To Taxes

More than half of Prince’s estate, estimated at between $100 million and $300 million, will go to state and federal taxes, experts say.

Without a will or any financial planning, experts say more than half of Prince’s vast estate will go to state and federal taxes.

Before Prince’s death, his estate — which includes property, music royalties, and other ventures — was widely estimated to be at least $100 million. But according toForbes, the value could wind up as high as $300 million.

In addition to a lack of will — revealed by his sister, Tyka Nelson, in court filings this week — determining the exact value of the estate will be further complicated by the fact that Prince exerted enormous control over his business affairs and worked with numerous managers over the years.
One thing is for certain, however: The government will get a huge share.

Unlike most other states, Minnesota requires residents to pay a 16% estate tax on top of the 40% federal tax — excluding deductions.
Executors will be able to take advantage of $5.45 million in federal deductions and a $1.6 million state tax exemption, but there’s no escaping what will essentially be a halving of the total value.

“Combination of those two taxes is going to take away about half of the total estate,” Martin Neumann, a partner and estate planner at the law firm Weinstock Manion, told BuzzFeed News. “If they are estimating that he has a $300-million estate, roughly $150 million that goes away in taxes.”
In effect, he added, “the estate or his siblings are going to be partners with the IRS and Minnesota to the tune of 50 cents on the dollar.”

If Prince had done even some planning, he could have saved a considerable amount of money, said Neil Meyer, a Minnesota attorney who specializes in estate planning. For example, the music artist could have established living trusts for his sister and half-siblings with a charity as the ultimate beneficiary.
“But that is gone now, that is not available,” Meyer said.
Estate taxes are due nine months after a person dies and experts anticipate there will be considerable amount of appraising analysis done by both Prince’s heirs and the government.
The tough part now will be appraising the value of Prince’s reported vault of unreleased songs.
“How do you value all these things?” Meyer said. “It’s going to be a very difficult thing to do.”

Even if he wrote will, that doesn't mean that it goes according final wishes. Just check out James Brown situation. His family and others have been fighting over his monies since he died, and so far not a penny has gone to charity. 50% of his estate was supposed to be given to poor children in South Carolina, but I think the case is still on going:no:

Yes, according to law, half siblings are entitled their share, which I find odd.
I still find it unbelievable that he left no will or at least it is not found yet.

I'm so happy that the floodgates are open on youtube now. All his material needs to be more accessible. He was an incredible live peformer and such a force to be reckoned with.

I loved seeing that clip of him doing DSTYGE back in 2011 (I think)...Prince tipping his hat to Michael, for sure. :D

Now if a will does appear then this changes but for now Prince blood sister (Tyka Nelson) and half brothers and half sisters will share Prince Estate. I wonder how this will turn out. Like some of the posts feel that not having a will is a good thing we will have to see and like it was also mention Prince come out as the good guy.

yeah I've been stumbling on a lot of cool prince stuff on youtube.. he was actually even better with the guitar than I realized.. I knew he was good but damnn!
