A Place With No Name (Second Single from Xscape) Discussion

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

Looks like it's another video with screens behind dancers.
oh.

They should NOT call this a Michael Jackson SHORT FILM!!!!!!!! that disgusts me a lot, this looks incredibly unprofessional, cheesy & badly written! This shoddy video won't be watched by me, ever. The original song is enough.

I feel uncomfortable reading your posts sometimes.

Remember when you were going to toss your copy of This Is It away and vow to never watch it again? Wow...
And yes, you will watch this video. The over-dramatic thing is a bit off putting.

Hmm.....ITC image of MJ, seems I was right to think of Naomi Campbell when I saw those earlier images. Would be nice to actually see some never before seen footage of Michael from that shoot.

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

I think they should stop making videos to promote the songs. It will never be the same without Michael, and the songs will speak for themselves.

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

Dancers in front of a photo of Michael on the set of ITC? Meh.

photo of Michael in the background is cool, but they shouldn't call it a short film IMO

Zakk, I agree with you in that it should not be called a short film. Michael was the only artist to create short films. Everyone else - including Estate/Sony - can only creates short-form and/or long-form videos.

I understand what they are attempting to say however; it skirts that imaginary line - for lack of a better term - about the artist Michael was. He cannot be duplicated and Estate/Sony cannot assume the qualities that made him the artist he was.

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

A short film is any film not long enough to be considered a feature film. No consensus exists as to where that boundary is drawn: the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits".[1] The term featurette originally applied to a film longer than a short subject, but shorter than a standard feature film.

AtlasAir, I understand your quote however; it was very important to Michael that his videos be characterized as short films and I have no problem referring to his films as such. Other artists are not that particular and if they are, it is because they are most likely trying to follow in Michael's footsteps. In my view, everyone else makes videos.

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

I was just pointing out that MJ didn't coin the term SHORT FILM.
These clips for posthumous releases are simply tools to promote the projects.
If the estate wants to refer to them as short films, whatever.
It's not like they're ever going to release a DVD with stuff from MICHAEL and onwards.
Hell, they didn't even put the HISTORY (remix) video on VISION, and that was made when he was alive.

That made me laugh! The short film did not make it on Vevo either.

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

the snapshots that they put up look promising. I am glad its by the sea its among my favorite places in the world (minus the industries) .. I hope they can capture the magic of the song. already getting excited.. how much more hours left till they upload it??

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

are you seriously going to trash this (yet to be seen) video over semantics?

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

I'm also not so sure it's a "sexy dance", looks more like a modern dance to me, kind of like Pink's video "Try" that turned out to be a great artistic video and not a shallow "sexy dance" thing. But It's really impossible to tell from 3-4 pictures from behind the scenes. We'll know in few hours.

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

Off topic: they need to reinvent the official website. Because it's not mobile friendly for example.

IMO Michael’s videos are short films because they are short films. It is not all because of the lengths of the video. The photos we’ve seen so far can be taken only from dancing parts of the video so there’s nothing we can say about the story or how good or bad it is written, if it is video or short film ... It sounds silly but we need to watch it to know! Lol.

and Michael called his videos short films. The estate has taken it up and continue to call them short films because Michael himself did so.

There were people trashing songs from Xscape before it was release, despite not hearing any snippets of it :cheeky:

Anyways, what time (in UK) they are going to release the video?

Can't wait for this!!

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

This might turn out pretty good, despite of being a tribute video if for example they included some unseen footage.

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

Something great on the screen behind, if they did it that way.. could be transfers of the alternate video for Smooth Criminal, with the snippets that were seen in Private Home Movies.. plus, transfers of behind the scenes of ITC.. would be a pretty nice setting for some moments!

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

How many hours/minutes til 9 AM? I don't get it.

Re: L.A. Reid confirms A Place With No Name is the next single (released on August 11)

Has anyone thought of doing a Neverland tribute, before it's sold?

Although it's probably too late by now, the video is all done and ready to be shown.

NEW YORK, Aug. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Epic Records and The Estate of Michael Jackson, announced today that "A Place With No Name," the next single from this year's critically acclaimed, chart-topping Michael Jackson album XSCAPE [MJJ Music/Epic Records], will make history when it premieres on Twitter (twitter.com). At 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday August 13, 2014 the short film will be tweeted through @MichaelJackson allowing the Twitter universe to be able to view the video within a tweet. And for those fans in New York City, "A Place With No Name" will be shown on the massive Sony screen in Times Square at the very same moment.
Michael Jackson's
Throughout his entire career, Michael has always stood on the cutting edge of groundbreaking technological advancements. With "A Place With No Name" as the very first music video to launch through Twitter, he continues to set the pace of pop culture and music yet again. Follow @MichaelJackson to watch the historical moment from the "King of Pop" unfold.
Increasing anticipation, a preview of the video is set to make its network television debut on the special Michael Jackson themed episode of FOX's So You Think You Can Dance broadcast that same evening beginning at 8PM ET. The show will open with a Top Eight group performance featuring "A Place With No Name" choreographed by the Emmy award-winning Travis Payne, who worked as both back-up dancer and choreographer for Michael Jackson. During the program, all of the Top Eight remaining contestants will compete with new all-star partners and each performance will feature a different Michael Jackson song, including songs from XSCAPE.
Michael re-envisioned America's 1972 classic "A Horse With No Name" to convey a narrative following a man whose car breaks down and is led by a mysterious woman to a utopian place where "no one is in fear" and "no people have pain". It was a collaboration with Elliott Straite [Dr. Freeze] done in 1998 at Record Plant Recording Studio.
The beautifully shot short film, directed by iconic award-winning director Samuel Bayer, whose credits include seminal videos from Nirvana and The Rolling Stones, has been created by following Michael's overall vision for short films which tell the song's story, in this case, of a man enticed into a magical "place" by a mysterious woman. The short film also includes outtakes and behind-the-scenes footage of Michael shot during the production for "In The Closet" short film, which have been kept in the vault since 1992.
Upon its May release, XSCAPE reached #1 in 52 countries and went Top 5 in 87 more territories. Stateside, it debuted at #2 on the Billboard Top 200, simultaneously landing at #1 on Amazon and Spotify. The album's first single, "Love Never Felt So Good," a duet by Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake soared to the Top in the U.S. and achieved 17 #1 and 67 Top 5 positions around the world. The single also made for Michael's highest Billboard chart debut since 1995 and fourth highest ever at #20 as his 49th smash hit. The album also generated his 50th top 10 Billboard chart with "Slave To The Rhythm" making Michael the first artist to ever have a Top Ten hit in each of six consecutive decades.
