The Michael Album was Number One in Germany. Not really a small market.
This comment makes so little sense I'm going to contradict myself by posting yet another 'Michael' sales post in this thread. SORRY!
'Michael' also went to #1 in Argentina which IS a very small music market. chart position has no bearing on the size of the market, only the album's relative performance against others in the same market.
Michael sold around 86,000 copies in Germany to take it to #1 in the chart, but in its first week in the UK it sold 113,000, which only got it to #4. Germany IS a small market compared to the UK and especially the USA.
Confirmed (in order of market size according to IFPI):
USA - RIAA certified as platinum for SHIPMENTS (1,000,000) but only SOLD around 600,000 according to Soundscan.
Japan - RIAJ Gold (100,000)
UK - BPI Platinum (300,000)
Germany - BVMI (NOT CERTIFIED), but we know it sold 86,000 in the first week, so would assume it sold at least 100,000 total (so probably should be GOLD).
French is double platinum - sold between 100,000 - 200,000
Australia - ARIA Gold (70,000)
Canada - CRIA Platinum (80,000)
Brazil - ABPD (NOT CERTIFIED) (maybe less than 40,000 copies sold)
Italy - FIMI double Platinum (120,000)
Netherlands - (NOT CERTIFIED)
Other confirmed by me:
Austria - Platinum (15,000)
1.625 million total
Certifications are not an ideal measure because they represent the MINIMUM cipes sold assuming each certification is for albums SOLD and not albums SHIPPED. RIAA certified for albums shipped but luckily we know the real number of albums sold.
I have checked all the above. Wikipedia expands this list with other countries that I have not checked:
Belgium - Platinum (30,000)
Czech Republic - 5× Platinum (25,000)
Denmark - Platinum (20,000)
Finland - Gold (10,000)
Greece - Gold (3,000)
Hungary - Gold (1,000)
New Zealand - Gold (7,500)
Poland - Platinum (20,000)
Portugal - Gold (7,500)
Russia - 2× Platinum (20,000)
Spain - Platinum (40,000)
Sweden - Gold (20,000)
Assuming all these are accurate then the new total is:
1.83million.
Still a long way from 2.5million.
