Magician injured in sword trick
Japanese magician Princess Tenko has been seriously injured in a sword trick that went wrong.

The illusionist was trapped in a box by 10 metal swords during a show in the Japanese city of Sabae, breaking several ribs and her right cheek.

One of the swords "would have been stuck in her right eye if it were one centimetre higher", her manager Noboru Ochiai said.

"It will take a month to heal the wounds," he added.

Princess Tenko has a large fan base in Asia and North America and regularly performs in Las Vegas.

'Tremendous pain'

Renowned for her elaborate costumes and doll make-up, the magician was injured performing a trick billed as The Spike Illusion in the Face of Death.

She was supposed to escape a box the moment it was speared by 10 fake metal swords, but instead was pinned inside.

The star continued her performance for 30 minutes before the show was called off.

"She is suffering tremendous pain but is more shocked that she had to call off performances," Mr Ochiai said.

Madonna's adoption hits trouble

Madonna's adoption of a Malawian baby could be under threat after an official assigned to the case was refused permission to travel to the UK.

Social worker Penstone Kilembe was due to monitor the child's progress in two trips to the pop star's London home.

But he said the Malawian government had stopped the visits, telling Reuters the adoption process "may crumble".

The government was not available for comment, but reports said a different official would now travel to London.

Mr Kilembe, who is director of Malawi's child welfare services, was appointed by the High Court of Malawi to oversee the child's welfare and report to the court and the ministry at least twice.

He told Reuters: "The whole adoption process may crumble and David [may be] sent back to his village."

Flight row

Justin Dzonzi, a human rights lawyer who led a legal challenge to Madonna's adoption, said the decision could jeopardise the adoption process.

"The court will not listen to anyone else apart from the one it appointed," he said.

Madonna was granted an 18-month interim custody order, which enabled her to take one-year-old David Banda out of Malawi last October.

The adoption will only receive final approval once it has been shown that the child is being properly cared for.

The court also ruled that Madonna should cover all the costs.

But the Malawi News newspaper reported that the country's minister of women and child development, Kate Kainja, had accused Kilembe of obtaining an air ticket and money from Madonna without government approval.

"We feel Mr Kilembe personalised the whole issue when other people can go," she told the newspaper. Mr Kilembe denied the accusations.

Stay awake, don't rest your head
Don't lie down upon your bed
While the moon drifts in the skies
Stay awake, don't close your eyes

Though the world is fast asleep
Though your pillow's soft and deep
You're not sleepy as you seem
Stay awake, don't nod and dream
Stay awake, don't nod and dream

I don't want to have lie about what’s inside
And then there’s always been a tiny part of me I was trying to hide
I don't want to see your expression if I let you down
No I just want you to love me
Oh I just want you to love me
