Wembley DVD content - discuss Michael, his concert and performance ONLY [discussion ]

Re: Wembley DVD content - Discuss Michael, his Wembley concert and performances Only

Lolol, or Montai or... what were the others? My husband and I always joke that he says "Pan Tau!" That's the name of a Czech/German children's show character from the 70's. Pan Tau wears a magic bowler hat and uses his powers to help kids with school, bullies, etc. And their parents can never see him, only the kids. So we've determined that Pan Tau is a massive MJ fan and attended every single concert... but only Michael could see him! :lmao:

On a more serious note, Wembley is truly INCREDIBLE! I am soooo happy with this release! Michael is just ... ah ... magic. I can only manage to watch half hanging off the couch in sheer awe, drinking in every move, every breath. Emotions all over the place, sigh. The vid quality is very impressively better than the clip that aired some months back on ITV, too. Wonderful, all things considered. And personally I love the lack of audience shots, etc. It's all about Michael, and he's the one I wanna see! I have nothing negative to add ... It's just pure enjoyment, adoring the master in all breathless glory!

Always thought it was closer to Montai lol.....Def a word with M and not a P, I think haha

Re: Wembley DVD content - Discuss Michael, his Wembley concert and performances Only

Best show I've ever seen. Period.

Simply the greatest performer who ever lived, and whoever doubts it should watch this show. Right now.

Re: Wembley DVD content - Discuss Michael, his Wembley concert and performances Only

I actually wanted a lil more dancing in Billie Jean. Nonetheless, an amazing performance, causes its Billie Jean haha.

I think that Michael's best dancing for Billie Jean was on the HIStory Tour. It's just a shame that he lip synced it then

Re: Wembley DVD content - Discuss Michael, his Wembley concert and performances Only

The best performance I've seen in my life, the energy is so amazing!

AC is nothing that have not been heard before. the beat, the instrumentation, the arrangement everything in that song can be heard in 1000 of 80s songs. watch 80s movies, every song in there is like this.
and the songs on the album are not.

I makes me think that the guys Michael worked with on these songs are king of narrow in creating. all the demos of Bad sound the same. I know its early process of the songs.
But it makes so much obvious, what BIG impact Quincy had.

Re: Wembley DVD content - Discuss Michael, his Wembley concert and performances Only

2.) 0.15.30-0.15.33: APOM: Michael is shouting out "Montai!" or something like that. What does that mean?

If you listen very carefully, he is actually saying "up on top"
If you watch, whenever he says it, he is pointing to and looking at the upper levels of the stadium. He does this during This Place Hotel, Another Part of Me, and a couple of other songs.

I think it's more a case of composing a song using stock sounds from whatever drum machines and keyboards were on hand, just to get the basic foundation down, and then going back and replacing/fine-tuning everything once the production process is underway. When you're in the songwriting/pre-production process, you're not worrying so much about specific sounds. At least in my experience.

When you also consider the fact that Michael might have put together a lot of demos at home, he obviously wouldn't have access to as wide a palate of sounds that he would once he's in the studio. As for the generic feel of the instrumentation...well, that's why it was re-worked into Smooth Criminal. To be honest, it seems like just a generic bed that served pretty much as a means to lay down the chord progression and Michael's vocals.

Quincy deserves his due, but let's be realistic here about what we're hearing in these demos and early versions.

Re: Wembley DVD content - Discuss Michael, his Wembley concert and performances Only

In Yokohama, I always thought he kinda say UP TOP! As in, to all the people in the bad seats. Sometimes bands will give a shoutout to the people way in the back :D

Re: Wembley DVD content - Discuss Michael, his Wembley concert and performances Only

Many people enjoy it a LOT despite of quality. IMO it's in YOUR mind what you allow yourself to focus on. Honestly, when I watched APOM and HN on YT (I don't have the DVD yet) the last thing I focused on was video quality I was so blown away by Michael. And it gave me joy and it made me very, very happy. I wish the same to you.

And it's the MJ performance thread anyway and I think you should separate Michael's performance and the video quality. I agree with those who say when judging by Michael's performance this was his best tour. I'm interested in Michael and his performance, not in modern technology.

Lyrically "Money" is a fucking masterpiece.

I wasn't talking about the fucking lyrics ;)

Not every song is supposed to be a masterpiece, though.

Don't get me wrong, I like "D.S." and "This time around", too. But I don't think they are by far as captive as "Al Capone". And it's hard to deny "This time around" is very repetitive, lazy composed like I don't know it from any other MJ song.

You listen to the production in this time around behind the rap, the sound tapestry, it's in another league. I think people are getting a bit carried away cause it's new and isn't overplayed, in a few years people may cringe at what they wrote about Al Capone, the production is so cheap, only MJ's vocals save it, i love it, but we need a reality check here, it isn't in the league it's being made out to be here.
Just because it's simple doesn't make it necessarily "cheap". The melody, the synthesizers, even the timing of the drum variations makes you (at least me lol) wanna love it. "This time around" has something about it, too (I often listened to it), but after a while it gives me a "this sucks!" feeling...

Re: Wembley DVD content - Discuss Michael, his Wembley concert and performances Only

i hear FATTAY

Re: Wembley DVD content - Discuss Michael, his Wembley concert and performances Only

To each his own, I suppose. Although I would disagree about This Time Around, I suppose maybe it's just a case of being one of the only really straightforward and simply structured songs on the album (and in his solo catalog, to be honest). What's a standout track for another artist may just be average by Michael's standards. Interesting subject to explore.

I've never gotten a "this sucks" feeling, however, when listening to TTA. Always really enjoyed the vibe, and what Michael was expressing lyrically.

Bringing it back on topic, though, I believe Al Capone is automatically more captivating than the songs you've mentioned because 1) it's an early version of what would eventually become Smooth Criminal, and 2) it's brand new to us as listeners. Everything else is really just a matter of taste, and there's nothing wrong with that!

Re: Wembley DVD content - Discuss Michael, his Wembley concert and performances Only

Really great show,Michael was on fire!!!
I prefer the Dangerous tour (I grew up with it) but the energy on this show is simply amazing.
Michael set a standard that can never be reached.

Re: Wembley DVD content - Discuss Michael, his Wembley concert and performances Only

Just watched the DVD in full, start to finish. Absolutely mind blowing! It was incredible, and today has been the happiest I've been for a very long time. It was watching Michael do moves I've never seen, seeing him smile etc that made me so happy. It did make me miss him alot though.

This is all proof of Michael having all the A&R talent, and Sony not having it. Michael dropped songs on the cutting room floor, and Sony disagrees and chooses them, and Rolling Stone and Time will love them the way they hated Michael, when he was doing the work. No wonder Michael spoke of all the misery Sony and media caused him. 'Money'(appropriately speaking) does beat all these Sony Bad 25 choices, that Michael rejected, hands down. I don't find myself getting 'The Feeling' of escapism with these choices, and wanting to buy these songs, the way i always got 'The Feelin' when Michael chose the songs and oversaw them. I don't find myself coming back to wanting to hear these Sony choices. I can't digest them, and i don't feel good, when i hear them. I don't want to buy this. Sure Sony says that any other artist would choose what Michael thought was incomplete or not good enough. But that's just it. Indeed, Michael rescued Sony and Sony never appreciates it. Maybe Sony should have had 'any other artist' and Michael should have been somewhere else. I'm just glad Michael got the last word, during his career. I'm forever grateful to him.

I think your right, I just couldn't explane it the way you did.
Michael did like some of the instruments and elements, cause he used them in other close to eachother sounding demos.

I did say in some thread, if AC or PoF get released as single now in this form, they don't have any chance. And that if the album contained these songs like they are now, Bad never would became the classic it is. Just many are so overwhelmed to heat somethimg new and start to compared the demos to final songs. And say AC is better then SC, its so funny and wrong at the same time.

I totally understand what you're saying. Al Capone just didn't have that sonic signature that Michael and Bruce always left on a song. That's more of a result of the fact that what we're hearing is not a polished final master, but a rough mix. Price Of Fame is a bit different, as the instrumentation isn't as up front and doesn't drive the song as much as Michael's vocal performance does.

As far as being released as singles, it'd really just be more of a novelty situation at this point.

I sent a friend who's a policeman Abortion Papers yesterday. He said he loved it so much he was listening to it at the station today and played it to his colleagues who all thought it was amazing and didn't understand why it hadn't been released.

Interesting that you feel that way.

Michael may not have chosen to release these tracks, or even bring some of them to the point of completion, but I don't necessarily think it's fair to simply dismiss them and put Sony at fault. We can learn so much by listening to Michael's demos and outtakes. As companions to studio releases, I think they hold quite a bit of importance for those obvserving and analyzing Michael's work. Not to mention the fact that the included outtakes in Bad 25 are really, really good.

Re: BAD 25 Demo's unreleased, unheard Studio songs Discussion [previews added]

Some outtakes are outtakes not because they're not of a high enough standard, but because of their subject matter or because the vibe of the song may not have fit the rest of the album.

Re: Wembley DVD content - Discuss Michael, his Wembley concert and performances Only

I always thought he was yelling the name of the videographer, he would do it with "Pecchi" in other Bad tour shots.

we'll have to agree to disagree then. I'm just recalling Michael choosing 'Another One Bites The dust' for Queen. Michael had 'it'. part of the talent is knowing what to choose and what not to. Just because a writer writes, doesn't mean he's always right. The ability for the writer to know that, is special..and Michael had that. So he spoke of it from the bickering days he had with Motown, through those with Sony. I feel it's condescending for a label to assume, just because an artist dies, then the songs automatically change for the better. Aliyah dying didn't make me like her songs better. Tupac dying didn't make me change my mind about his songs, and then suddenly feel, well, i'll automatically buy them. And i feel that that is what Sony is trying to do to me, now, as a consumer. Michael was special, indeed. i am not personally moved for the positive by any outtakes that Michael didn't oversee, himself, including these Bad 25 outtakes. This isn't the first time. Labels have done this consistently. The record industry has had trouble because it's assumed that suits running labels have A and R abilities. Well..they don't. They just have connections. Hence the independent revolution, and Prince fighting with his labels and etc. etc. In the very old days label execs may have had a little bit of 'it', but today..no way. I have hated so much of what labels have put out. And quite frankly, a lot of other people must have, too, with all the Piracy going on and people not buying songs, and free file sharing, and such. A lot of people complaing on youtube that songs suck.

and as far as a song's vibe not fitting rest of album..that was all that mattered for that moment. who could fortell the future beyond that album, at that point?

Anyway, Michael's legacy will forever be preserved by the knowledge that he was the one with all the A and R 'it' talent, regarding his projects.
