This is a terrible idea. The song is perfect the way it is. Re-recording just shows how lazy and untalented today's songwriters are. You can't beat the perfection of the original. I'm disappointed Lionel Richie would even consider this.
And let's not forget that the famine situation in Africa, which the original song was made for, is still an ongoing problem. And mainstream media doesn't even care about it.

I don't have a problem with this idea as long as MJ's presence is felt HARD because this was practically HIS song, written 98.9% entirley by HIM.


and I'm sorry but I can't STAND Quincy...like at ALL.

I love the idea of rising money for Haiti. They really need it.
I am not that comfortable with the idea of WATW being "re-made", but... ok, I will avoid my negativity and wait to see the results. If MJ is there.... wwowwwww, I really want to hear it :)

I haven't decided what to think about it yet. I've always thought of "We Are The World" as of the anthem of people of the world. It's a powerful and unique song. And it's perfect. And when it was released, it raised the money for those who needed it.

Haiti needs money now, so it's a good idea to release a charity song with all singers who are popular among today's youth. And by the way I am sure many young people these days haven't heard this song and I like the idea of introducing the song to them...

I just hope they will include Michael's vocals.

OR, I hate to say it, but this thought have crossed my mind, probably Quincy just wants some attention. I don't like him. I can't forget the things he said after Michael passed.

I read this and my first reaction was a feeling of uncertainty.

I don't see why they need to re-record the song, why not write a new one? We Are The World as it was originally done is a work of art and should not be touched. MJ is every much apart of We Are The World and him not being apart of it in some way would be ridiculous. Lets hope they don't use Jermaine to represent the Jackson name! Its gonna be interesting how they pull this one off.

I swear I just don't feel good whenever I see or hear about Quincy these days.

Thousands of people are dead, injured, missing, and hungry and people here are complaining about who's singing a song and not liking Q. For all I care Biz Markie can sing it as long as as people are helped.

i knew this post was coming.

the reality is, people are people..and politics is, a lot, involved.

and some people say things, and do other things.

revealing how the sausage is made, is necessary.

everybody is into lip service...but the fact is..it takes something to make some people give. this is a discussion board. and, on this subject..we are discussing the reality..not the nobility.

if a person pledges with a credit card, will the money get there? these are realities.

people are talking about aid being delayed for god knows whatever reason. all we are doing is being the messenger.

anybody can say..'just as long as people are helped.'

but the reality is..the ratio of people saying that, and people doing something that has an actual result is separated.

the fact is..if people aren't in l0ve with a song, they will forget about it, and not buy it..and nothing is accomplished.

it happens a lot.

a 'we are the world' is a rarity.

charity, apparently, is a hard thing for some. it's easier to come up with an idea for a fund raiser. but when people have to give out of their own pockets, the first thing some worry about is, where the money is going.

but if they are overtaken by something that is magical, they tend to forget about a lot of things, and just throw their money at it. some consider that a good thing..others don't.

it's a hard thing to say, and an even harder thing to hear, but it's reality.

Ok...the point is that they can and ARE CAPABLE of writing and releasing a NEW song, They should do that so that people will actually buy it and those that are in need CAN get help. This paticular song WAS MJ's and he came up with it for a reason that was REAL and true to his heart and beliefs. If they try and erase him (which I'm sorry but I can see Quincy doing) that ish won't sit well with a lot of people... and there goes their money. They need to follow Simon Cowel's example and release smething original and all these artist (BIZ Markie included) can go hop on that ish.

What does any of this have to do with my comment? I just find it a really shallow thing to gripe about who is singing a song in the grand scope of things.

it has everything to do with your comment. it's called 'six degrees of separation. it's the same reason why people illegally download.

it's irrelevant whether or not, it's shallow, because we live in THIS world.

either the song kicks ass, or people will not buy it, like they 'should'.

if everybody just forgot about the songs all together, and everybody just dug into their own pockets, without exception, there would be nothing to discuss.

Hey hun...well Lionel Did Co-write We are the world. Him and Mike worked on the lyrics and melody. Lionel had part of the melody down(well small part of it) then they worked on it together...so it is fair to say he co-wrote it! :)

So what? It's a song, it's not like it's God or Buddha or something. They're not recording it for you or anybody here to like. Many people didn't like the original version. Other people made fun of it at the time like Saturday Night Live and radio DJs. But it served its purpose, that's all that matters. We Are The World has been remade before, so it's not like this is the 1st time.

People all over the world are donating and have raised a lot of money...The thing is, People are still dying in Haiti because of medical/medicine shortage. Almost all dont have a the privileged to get medical supplies or even water. I'm not pointing fingers but it makes you think doesnt it? Where the Hake is the $$ going? Just sayin!

are you kidding? where do you get that many didn't like the original version? i couldn't find a copy. it was GONE.

and the media is irrelevant, where MJ is concerned, as you know.

you don't seem to want to see the reality.

if anyone here is truly honest, no matter how we feel, no matter how much we hate hearing it...if names like..say..TIger Woods..or..Chris Brown, are attached to a charity fundraiser...there will be...disagreement.

but...if there are no fundraisers, and everybody just throws their money at it, out of their own pocket...there's nothing to discuss.

but..that ain't reality.

I totally agree with your post exotic princess.

I don't trust Quincy at all, but I do trust Lionel and as far as I know Lionel has always supported Michael.

I have to admit, it's like why now. . .why now are they doing this that Michael is not here to be an active participant.

I agree that perhaps a new 'We are the world' type song should be recorded instead of re-recording the original. The concept will still be the same, but the song will be new.

IMO, Michael was a huge reason to why the single did so well. He was on top of the world at that time and everyone wanted to buy anything with his name associated to it.

BUT, it is all for charity to help others in need. I just hope that Michael is not forgotten because he was such a big part of WATW.

For me it only proves that music industry is indeed a joke right now. I have a problem with people re-recording a song that is a stand alone masterpiece and shouldn't be touched by anyone, even the original authors. There are some pieces of art in the history that just shouldn't be touched at all, cause they are perfect the way they are and are important to our culture. And the purpose and message behind the art was what created it. This time around art is not created. It's rehashed. Uninspired.
WATW made history 25 years ago, MJ and Lionel + Quincy managed to get all the artists together and record it in just one night which was an event one of a kind... Recreating everything they did exactly the same way is...

I'd much rather see these singers donating proceeds from their own music to Haiti than do something like this, if they are not capable of recording original music.

There is NO Reason to recreate the ORIGINAL! It is UNTOUCHABLE! Its sooo wrong to replace parts of the voices by other artists...NOT only Michael's but also all the others...Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Harry Belafonte...I mean there is no competition. They should make another song instead of this...I dont konw what to think about the music anymore...Music is a joke nowadays. Its nice to give tribute to Michael but this way IMHO is NOT The right way...but what am i to do, i'm only a fan right?
