"Thriller" sales soar close to Eagles' "Hits"

How did they jump from 14 times platinum in 1993 to 22 times platinum in 1995 selling less than 1 million records in that time frame???
What the hell??

Ditto!

This stinks like 3 day old fish! :mat:

As far as I am concerned, this is straight up bullcrap.

yupe..can fan on here write to RIAA and ask them wat the heck was up with their number?
and when was the last time MJ's albums get certified?

Certifications are up to the record label not RIAA, Sony clearly didn't want to continually certify Michael's album because for every upgrade it meant paying out more royalties to Michael. RIAA can only show certifications submitted to them by the record labels. Clearly the Eagles kept getting certified because Warners didn't mine paying them their worth.

Isn't the album sales certified by RIAA upon the record label's request? I'm confused.

really? That breakdown of eagle's figures sound EXTRA EXTRA suspicious!!! -_-

YES!!!!!!!!!! I've been waiting for this day for so long!!!! That rticle makes the Eagles figure seem suspicious...

Has anybody officially updated the "numbers".... or its still only suspicious?

As far as we know, nobody has updated it!

Why?

And why the suspicion is not officially denied or confirmed?

Soars close? You're telling me with "Thriller 25" (which I think was counted seperately from Thriller, which is stupid if you ask me, it's still the same album) and with Michael's recent sales which have skyrocketted since his death, you mean to tell me that "Thriller" still hasn't surpassed that Eagles album? I don't believe that. I think Michael passed them a long time ago. They just don't want to give MJ credit, as usual. I guess it will kill them to say MJ has the biggest album in the U.S. and worldwide as well, but they need to stop already. I know "Thriller" is the biggest in the U.S. Who's even buying that Eagles album anyway? lol. Seriously, no offense, they're talented and all that jazz, but i'm sure MJ passed them a long time ago.

Funny that the eagles have best seller when I can't name one eagle's song or point out one band member. you couldn't pay me to believe those figures.

The Eagles are a well known group (they sung 'Desperado', 'Hotel California', 'Take It Easy', 'Tequila Sunrise', 'Best of My Love' etc.) but I don't think they have sold more albums than 'Thriller' has.

somebody must've failed math class.. I know damn well Thriller has out sold the Eagles

yes but this is in USA, not the world - I think the Eagles sold more than Thriller in USA, which to me is a SHOCK that some basically anonymous band sold more than the biggest selling album ever...

I looked those songs up on youtube, I've heard 'hotel california' before and take it easy also sound familiar.
according to wikipedia, they haven't sold much outside the UK, US and Canada .... That explains why I never heard of them except for when fans from the US were talking about the fact that they sold more then Thriller in the US:smilerolleyes:

I seem to remember back in the 90's, the press always talked about Thriller sales in the US. One to may times did I hear they say Thriller was the biggest selling album in the US. And this wasn't US newspapers, these were European!

Who cares what MJ sells in the US (no offense US citizens) but he sold 28 million in the US. He sold over 100 million worldwide.

not right
everyone thinks only the album sold more than 105mio!
thats not true

albums
singles
etc... from thriller sold together more than 105millions or now more than 110 already...

worldwide just album sold around 60mio i think (for sure more than 55mio) ;)

Since being certified as 29 times platinum in January 2006, "Their Greatest Hits" has sold 404,000 copies, including 33,000 this year and 115,000 in 2008.

If my RIAA math serves me correctly, that means the Eagles should be certified 40X platinum by the end of the month.

I mean, give me a break. Does anyone honestly believe that the Eagles Greatest Hits has outsold Thriller? The Eagles are considered a great band in the US, but they aren't THAT great. A couple pretty nice songs, but that's about it.

Something doesn't add up about those sales figures for the Eagles album. For an album in the US to sell over 20 million copies, it has to be HUGE. I just can't see a greatest hits package for the Eagles being the best selling album in US history. Something is fishy there.

I agree. I never understood this. And world wide I absolutely refuse to believe they outsold Thriller.

How do you get the jump from 29 million to 40 million!!??

I think you math does not serve you correctly!

NEW YORK (Billboard) – For nearly a decade, the Eagles' "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975" has been the recording industry's ultimate evergreen release, certified by the RIAA as the all-time best-selling album in the United States. But thanks to continued robust demand for Michael Jackson's catalog since his June 25 death, "Thriller" appears on the verge of matching "Their Greatest Hits," at least in the eyes of the industry trade group.

In March, the Recording Industry Association of America certified "Thriller" as 28 times platinum, meaning that at least 28 million copies of the album have been shipped since its 1982 release. That's just a notch behind the Eagles' hits compilation, which was released in 1976 and was certified 29 times platinum in 2006.

Billboard estimates that the posthumous surge in Jackson's sales and Sony Music Entertainment's efforts to push Jackson CDs into the distribution pipeline have likely propelled shipments of Jackson product, if not yet sales, beyond the 29 million-unit mark in the United States.

Amid the recent explosion in Jackson sales, "Thriller" has enjoyed the second-biggest sales bump in his catalog, just behind the hits collection "Number Ones." During the three weeks that ended July 12, "Thriller" sold 552,000 U.S. copies, for year-to-date sales of 608,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

STRONG SALES TO CONTINUE

Most industry executives believe that the most recent SoundScan week -- which included the widely watched memorial service for Jackson at the Staples Center in Los Angeles -- will mark a posthumous weekly peak for Jackson sales. They also expect sales to wind down slowly in the next few months, which means sales will remain strong. In the week ended July 12, Jackson's album catalog sold a combined 1.1 million copies, up from nearly 800,000 in the preceding week and 422,000 in the week he died.

"Thriller" and "Their Greatest Hits" were instant hits. The RIAA first certified "Thriller" platinum in January 1983, just two months after its release, while "Their Greatest Hits" was certified platinum in February 1976, mere days after it arrived.

Propelled by groundbreaking videos for the singles "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and the title track, "Thriller" reached the 20 million certification milestone in October 1984, becoming the RIAA's top-selling album of all time. The album's next RIAA certification, at 21 times platinum, came in May 1990. The RIAA's certification of "Thriller" as 28 times platinum in March came 13 months after Sony's release of a deluxe 25th-anniversary edition of the album.

The RIAA's second certification of shipments of the Eagles' "Their Greatest Hits" didn't occur until August 1990, when it certified the release as 12 times platinum. The RIAA couldn't immediately explain why the album wasn't certified at earlier platinum milestones, or why it was next certified at 14 times platinum in December 1993, and for 22 times in June 1995, despite U.S. sales of only 919,000 during that period. When the RIAA certified "Their Greatest Hits" as 26 times platinum in November 1999, it unseated "Thriller" at the top of the RIAA's all-time ranking.

Since being certified as 29 times platinum in January 2006, "Their Greatest Hits" has sold 404,000 copies, including 33,000 this year and 115,000 in 2008.

Representatives at Sony and Warner Music Group, which distributes "Their Greatest Hits," declined to comment.

These are US sales figures only(yes they are also WRONG)

Thriller is already ahead of the Eagles. The sales have been purposely not reported and certified (as with all the songs he owned) to keep MJ "cash poor". Now that he is out of the way they print this. Funny how when he was alive he was "washed up" and his music was almost never played on the airwaves. Now everyone is cashing in. When the trust is liquidated you will see it was murder and it was planned.

This says it all, only 1 million (US) Thriller sales from 1984-1990???
(166,667 copies sold per year)

1976
(1,000,000 (US) albums sold)

1976- 1990
11 million (US) sales!!!???
(785,715 US albums per year)

1990-1993 (US) 3,000,000 more sales!!!???
(1,000,000 copies per year)

1993- 1995 (US) 8,000,000 more sales!!!??
(4,000,000 more (US) sales???!!!!!

This is a fraud all done to dethrone Thriller. We have discussed this issue for years now all can see these insane numbers. This is unbelievable!

yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been waiting for this...Plus I saw on something once where someone from the Eagles accused Mike of going out and buying up a lot of Thriller records so I can't wait til he passes them
That was Glenn Frey and he was joking with a reporter who asked him about this "battle" between the albums. He wasn't accusing Mike of anything. This "Greatest Hits" album was released by the group's label without their knowledge and they were very upset about it at the time.

How close is Thriller to the Eagle's hits album and when we will get an official update?

In the USA maybe, in the world I don’t think so! I would prefer to see figures from sales around the world.

Thriller worldwide sales are MUCH bigger than the Eagles! Check this:

"The RIAA's certifications are simply a formality, though, as Jackson's Thriller is already recognized as the top-selling album according to worldwide sales. Though numbers vary, it's reasonable to estimate that the album has moved 110 million copies worldwide since its 1982 release. As a comparison, the Eagles' Their Greatest Hits has moved an estimated 42 million — a formidable number for sure, but less than half of Jackson's total."

I hope it will surpass the Eagles in the US but it doesn’t really matters to worldwide sales! :)

Thriller is the BIGGEST SELLING ALBUM in the U.S.
it ALWAYS was! they only faked all these statistics!!!
like someone above described.
