The Michael Jackson Musical: 'MJ'

It was absolutely to be expected that non biased reviewers would be critical about shunning the allegations. Wether you like it or not it is a flaw for sure in the show.
WTF? What allegations? The show is set in 1992. There was no allegations until August of 1993.

@OnirMJ just like their was no stranger in Moscow or they don’t care about us yet. Also that won’t withhold anti MJ journalists to try to make the narrative all about the ( lack of) allegations in their reviews.

These so-called “journalists” have been doing the same crap for YEARS. They have always been biased against Michael. They have unsuccessfully tried to diminish his legacy since the beginning because they don’t want a black man to have the power and influence that Michael had and STILL has. The bottomline has nothing to do with fake allegations, it has to do with racism, pure and simple. Anyone who doesn’t agree or believe that is in serious denial, and that’s sad.

@somewhereinthedark

Initially racism could have been a believable motive for sure but after 28 years of rumors and allegations there are also journalists out there who believe Michael is guilty. The truth runs marathons but so do lies.
We can only hope that my “fear” for the state of upcoming reviews of the musical have been premature…

And who knows eventually maybe the marathon will end with Michael and his children as the winners.

PS what’s with all the trash in the street? Is there a strike going on or something? When you present gold you don’t want garbage sitting in front of it :-D

People aren't waiting for reviews from the critics as you can see people are lining up to go into the theater.
MJ the Musical is ALREADY A MAGNIFICENT ACHIEVEMENT!!!!

It’s possible that some song elements were tracks (like sound effects), but I can guarantee all of the vocals and at least most of the music was live. Sometimes it sounded like Myles had a second layer to his voice, but I think that was just an effect. MJ’s actual voice is not in the show. Ironically, this show is more live than MJ’s 90’s tours were.

And sorry, forgot to include the song list! The Playbill (programme) only lists the songs in alphabetical order, and I can’t remember their order exactly, but:

2 Bad
ABC
Bad
Beat It
Billie Jean
Black or White
Blame It on the Boogie
Can You Feel It
Climb Ev’ry Mountain
Dancing Machine
Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough
Earth Song
Ease on Down the Road
For the Love of Money
Higher and Higher
Human Nature
I Can’t Help It
I’ll Be There
I Want You Back
Jam
Keep the Faith
The Love You Save
Man in the Mirror
Money
Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag
Price of Fame
Rock With You
She’s Out of My Life
Shout
Smooth Criminal
Stranger in Moscow
Tabloid Junkie
Soul Train Theme Song
They Don’t Care About Us
Thriller
Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’
You Can’t Win

Some of these are other artists’ songs that were featured when MJ envisioned his inspirations. Some songs were also sung more than once via reprises, and some were cut down a lot and/or mixed around.
never heard for the love of money sand ''higher and higher'' before

These “journalist” WANT Michael to be guilty. They know, just like we do, that these accusers and allegations are fake as hell. The media is STILL angry that their agenda against Michael did not work. They also will never admit that they are wrong. The documentation, court records etc. are there for them to see and they don’t care. It’s in THEIR best interest to keep this bull @#$& going. These creatures KNOW that Michael is 100% INNOCENT. The bottomline is that they never in a million years thought that MJ fans would be so intelligent and point out the discrepancies and outright lies of the fake accusers. They thought they could bury the truth and Michael’s legacy would be destroyed. That has been the AGENDA for 30+ years. These so-called “journalist” are as fake as the accusers and allegations.

“Study the Greats” … A review of MJ the Musical

“Study the Greats and Become Greater,”that phrase greets you from the stage, as soon as you enter the theatre. The writings on the curtain are in Michael’s own handwriting and is copied directly from his notes. It demonstrates the essence of Michael Jackson and most importantly his humanity.

MJ the Musical is now in previews at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York City. Let’s get right to the point, the musical that I had the pleasure of attending the first night of previews, is nothing short of …BRILLIANT.

The excitement for Monday’s preview began on the street, where super fans, theatre aficionados and the curious gathered in a line that wrapped around the block and then some.

The story begins in 1992, as an adult MJ (Myles Frost) prepares for the historic DANGEROUS tour. We are treated to a stunning visual of MJ rehearsing with his singers and dancers. The story continues to the excitement of the Jackson 5 days, the Apollo theatre, and in the studio with Quincy Jones. Katherine Jackson is portrayed by Ayana George. Her duet with young Michael (Walter Russell 111) singing “I’ll be there” brought me to tears.

There are three actors portraying Michael in various stages of his life
(Walter Russell, Tavon Olds-Sample and making his Broadway debut, Myles Frost). Each one captures perfectly Michael’s spirit. It is evident that Frost is an emerging star and he brings to stage, a real Michael Jackson in all his glory. This performance is sure to be nominated for a Tony Award and he deserves to win.

Myles gives us a poignant portrayal of Michael showcasing his never-ending search for perfection, his drive to “Become Greater” and the challenges he faced along the way. Forget the tabloids, this musical gives us the real story of Michael.

Broadway veteran, Quentin Earl Darrington brings forth a Joseph Jackson that is real and yes, brutal. Fans of Joseph will not be pleased but I maintain it is a father and son relationship, that Michael himself described in numerous interviews.

Fans of Michael Jackson will be thrilled to know that many of Michael’s groundbreaking songs are included in this musical. As a New Yorker, I grew up attending many Broadway shows. I have never seen a show receive numerous (4) standing ovations throughout the performance. Yet, it happened during MJ the Musical. The finale had all of us up on our feet dancing and singing along. Even Michael’s iconic glove gets applause.

“Become Greater…”
MJ the Musical proves to everyone that MJ’s legacy is secure and his impact of being the greatest entertainer of our time or any other time is safe.
Cancel Michael? Well, that was never going to happen.
For the haters, Stay Pressed …you failed! Four standing ovations prove that.

I thank the cast and crew of bringing us a Michael we all deserve. This musical proves why Michael deserves respect.
Michael deserves the true story of his legacy to be told honestly and this musical achieves just that. This show is thrilling, poignant and a dazzling production.
I’ll be back to see it again and again.

Step 1 the musical is Michael’s resurgence to the public eye?
Step 2 a positive factual documentary?
Step 3 Dan Reed and co go through the mud?
Step 4 Shake your body down to the ground!

@sherrymartin08 When I tell y'all favor ain't fair!!!! This show was so beyond AMAZING! I'm done...I've danced, laughed, cried, screamed, etc!

Wait... what?

Did Siedah Garret also write Keep The Faith?? - I never knew. I have always thought KTF was written by MJ - it's totally his style and feeling, like Heal the World. KTF is such an uplifting and great song.

Glen Ballard and Siedah Garret wrote most of the song. Michael only wrote the bridge.

Prince Jackson Attends MJ Show on Broadway: He 'Loved the Energy,' Says Source

"[He] mentioned how he can't wait to see it again," the insider tells PEOPLE of Prince

Prince Jackson is showing support for a musical about his late father's life.
The star attended MJ The Musical over the weekend — and he sang the praises for the musical that honors the work of his late father, Michael Jackson, a source tells PEOPLE. The 24-year-old said the show "blew him away," according to the source.

Adding, "Prince was very, very, sweet. He kept saying, 'Wow,' and talking about how much he loved the show, loved the energy — even loved the logo."

After the show, Prince stuck around to say hello to some of the creatives, and chatted with them from the front row of the theater.
The star "hung around a long time after the show," the source says, "and mentioned how he can't wait to see it again."
He also snapped a selfie with a fan, the insider adds.

The one thing Prince didn't do? Meet the cast as COVID restrictions prevent backstage visits. "But he kept saying he was excited to meet Myles Frost, who plays Michael, praising his 'incredible' performance," the source says.

MJ The Musical takes audiences inside Jackson's creative process, depicting the singer rehearsing for his 1992 Dangerous Tour. It features over 25 of the singer's biggest hits and is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon with a book by the Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage.

Michael Jackson has been accused of sexual and child abuse by multiple people over the past several years. Docuseries Escaping Neverland shared some of his accusers allegations and stories. It's unclear if the musical addresses the allegations.

In April 2020, Prince opened up during an interview with Entertainment Tonight about what his dad would think about his charity, Heal Los Angeles, partnering with meal delivery service Fresh N' Lean to hand out meals to those in need amid the virus outbreak.

"I would like to think that he would be very proud because I think this was one of his main goals, was not only to spread his message of positivity and happiness but to see it enacted in his kids," Prince said. "As a father, I think that's what you want to do when you raise kids. You're preparing them for the world and the type of person they're going to be."

Prince continued: "I'm very grateful that I have this feeling that it's this collaborative ecosystem — we all need to help each other — and that came from the way that he raised us."

In October, Prince also opened up about his "close" relationship with his siblings, Paris and Bigi Jackson in an interview with Good Morning Britain. He explained that they've all learned to lean on each other in different ways over the years.
"At this point in our life it doesn't really feel like there's that hierarchy of, 'I'm the older brother,'" he said. "It's more [that] we're all siblings and we're kind of all on that same level where my sister has her strengths, and my brother has his strengths, and where I'm not as strong in certain areas, they complement me in that way."

MJ The Musical began previews on December 6 at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York City with an opening night set for February 1.

Almost 3 years later and the "press" can't still get the name right, hilarious.

Glad to see that Prince approved it and enjoyed it. Michael really raised his kids to grow up to be amazing adults. Proud

In what might be the harshest of the Covid Broadway cancellations, MJ, the new Michael Jackson musical, will not return to Broadway’s Neil Simon Theatre until Monday, Dec. 27, an announcement that wipes out the show’s opportunity for the lucrative pre-Christmas and Christmas Day box office.

In a tweeted statement, producers said, “As a result of multiple positive COVID test results within the company, and out of an abundance of caution, ‘MJ’ is canceling all performances through December 26th. Previews will resume Monday, December 27.”

The MJ announcement is the most far-reaching of the recent surge in Covid cancellations, which this week have tended toward one or two immediate performances followed by night-by-night decisions on further cancellations.

MJ’s 10-day shutdown is more in keeping with last month’s temporary shutdown of Chicken & Biscuits, the Douglas Lyons comedy at Circle in the Square that paused production from Nov. 9-19 due to breakthrough Covid cases. (Chicken & Biscuits subsequently closed permanently later that month, with producers citing the devastating financial impact of the Covid cancellations.

Though box office figures for individual shows are not available from the Broadway League this season, Chicken & Biscuits was thought to have been struggling at the box office even before the cancellations, which isn’t the case with MJ. The Michael Jackson musical, with a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, a score of Jackson hits and a starring performance by newcomer Myles Frost, has been playing to sold-out houses since beginning previews on Dec. 6. The musical is directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon.

The MJ cancellations follow earlier announcements today that both Moulin Rouge! and Hamilton have canceled their Broadway performances for tonight, Friday Dec. 17, due to breakthrough Covid cases or positive test results. Today’s cancellations – there could well be more as the day goes on – are the latest in Broadway’s new wave of Covid-caused pauses this week. Jagged Little Pill, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Tina – The Tina Turner Musical all canceled performances this week due to the surge in Covid cases.

The cancellation surge arrives as New York City grapples with the emergence of the very contagious omicron variant.

Anyone know what this is?

What book is this, or is it the script to the musical?

For Broadway shows, "book" means the script/dialogue of the show. Music and/or Lyrics are usually attributed to someone else, but this is a jukebox musical of MJ's catalog, so it doesn't apply here.
